hi strangers :)
I haven't been posting because I'm being a productive pretend popstar irl. I've clocked a lot of hours this week working on my Turtle Takeover painting! Its not quite finished, but I wanted to check in and share a progress report.
Still trying to work out in my head how I want to go about sharing my art. I think its interesting how in this day in age, you have to consider sharing the process as well as the finished piece. I tend to be a polished product girl but maybe including the messy journey can be fun too!

I posted progress pictures of this a while back, but I want to post a picture of just the final, since tumblr would hide this and most of the images. I feel like a lot of people might not have actually seen this if they were swiftly scrolling by.
This is a picture of my 34th Sketchbook (SK34), when she was brand new. I finished and shelved her on Feb.21/22, and she now looks more weather beaten than this. The cover features my character Tristan with a rainbow plume/ribbon come out of his helmet.
Would anyone like a side by side picture of what she looks like now?

I didn't want to clown on the gift donation for kids post and this might be a little late anyway, but if you're going to donate art supplies, or even give some to kids in your family, please think twice before getting those art kits that come with everything, even the ones that do come in fancy wooden boxes. They're almost always terrible in quality and even as a little kid you end up feeling frustrated by them and feel like you're the one doing something wrong or you don't have talent or something.
I get it, they're usually cheaper than buying even student grade supplies individually, but I remember getting one of the fancy wooden box ones at like thirteen then after a while getting (secretly, as to not upset the person who got me it that Christmas) because I felt I wasn't good enough at art to warrant such a gift because I couldn't get the pencils or watercolors or oil pastels to behave like how the books and videos told me they would behave. And even getting the plastic box ones as an even younger kid left me feeling frustrated. Because the kit ones are all full of cheap filler and less pigment as a cost cutting measure. And the paper that came with it was no better than printer paper so the watercolors disintegrated it.
Anyway I'm not saying you have to buy a one hundred dollar professional set of paint or something. And even student grade does add up. But a decent sketchbook (I recommend Canson XL Mixed Media, because not only is it cheap but the paper is great and there's like sixty sheets it), and maybe just one type of art supply instead of buying a whole studio's worth. Decent sets of artist pencils of different lead types are easy to come by. Or even just a few tubes of primary colors acrylic paints (I've been using Arteza acrylics and I like them a lot), or a box of decent oil pastels or a small watercolor pallet. And you can find decent brushes, even in packet sets, just make sure they're the right kind for the paints you're getting (and there are mixed media brushes too) Avoid at all costs the Crayola brushes with the thick plasticity bristles that are the bane of children everywhere tho.
TL;DR honestly, if you have the chance to know what the child likes in art supplies, just get them a decent set of that instead of one of the frustrating art kits that give you everything but for a lesser quality
(ALSO: make sure art supplies geared to younger kids are nontoxic, and if giving to an older kid who knows not to drink the paint water, make sure they know if there's anything toxic even still. This isn't too much of a worry these days unless you're getting really expensive pro stuff, but look out for warnings anyway)

HAGGING OUT: MAY
I spent the festivities enjoying decadence that was gone too quickly to photograph but some highlights:
Spiked ice tea (hibiscus/cherry/rosehip/berry tea and Queen Charlotte rum)
Chocolate croissants and cream puffs
Brioche French toast
Bread drizzled with hot honey and spices
Basically if it was a rare treat, an indulgence, or intoxicating in some way, we partook and delighted in the transition to a new season. It coincided with some truly lovely weather, some of the first we've had this extremely fickle year.
April is a hard month for us here between the inevitable (taxes) and difficult anniversaries, so we cut loose on the 30th and put it behind us for another year. Thanks to springcleaning I had time to create a new devotional piece:
This is for Freyja's shrine and is the box lid for containing objects offered or dedicated to Her. I painted it to look like an amber gem bordered with amber beads. Everyone at my altar gets a themed box and I'm working my way through all of them. Painted with Arteza acrylic paints (highly recommend, great pigmentation, blends well, and dilutes without being grainy).

i don't know who you are but i adore your sucklet painting it inspires me to paint again after 2 or 3 years of not doing so
aw anon thank u so much this is so sweet!!!!!!! 🥺🥺🥺
idk what kind of painting you do but i rly was in such a painting slump til i started working w/ gouache this past year - its much easier cleanup than acrylic (or god forbid oils) & a lot more versatile than watercolor. i rly like arteza paints for a budget-friendly brand & it rly has been so joyful. best of luck in whatever you paint!!!! 🎨🧑‍🎨

i could ramble about all of my irl art supplies so i will !
personally my favorite markers are acrylic markers (like poscas but ive never used that brand) with the arteza water based brush pens in close second (theyre basically markers shh). i honestly prefer painting with paint markers far more than using brushes. ive painted with brushes quite a bit but i find the restrictive nature of markers far more appealing.
as for most people's darling art supply, the alcohol marker, i dont use it that often because has a tendency to bleed out on my paper. but theyre great if you want consistent and blendable FUCK IFORGOT TO UPLOAD MY COMIC PAGE BRB
