Sir Alan Lascelles, King George VI and Maj. Gen. Robert Laycock, Chief of Combined Operations, on the bridge of HMS Arthusa in June 1944 as they cross the English Channel after Operation Overlord. The King visited the French invasion beachhead, though he was kept a very safe distance from the front line of battle, transferring to a “Duck” amphibious landing craft that “waddled” up the beach.

With only days to go before the invasion, both George VI and Churchill decided they should witness the historic landing on the beaches of Normandy at close range from one of the “bombarding ships.” At their weekly luncheon on May 30, the King told the prime minister the idea had been “in my mind for some time.” Churchill suggested they go together. “I told Elizabeth about the idea & she was wonderful as always & encouraged me to do it,” the King wrote in his diary. Tommy Lascelles was horrified by the proposal. He “shook the King” by asking “whether he was prepared to face the possibility of having to advise Princess Elizabeth on the choice of her first Prime Minister in the event of her father and Winston being sent to the bottom of the English Channel.

The King was easily convinced by Lascelles not to go, but Churchill required a heavier hand. The King even considered showing up in Portsmouth and physically stopping him from boarding a ship, before the PM finally stood down. It was a rare and rather silly episode of disagreement between them.

But George VI did get to visit the armies in Normandy on 16 June, ten days after the landing, along with Lascelles and officials. Although the Channel waters were choppy for their crossing, by the look on his face in the photo, l’d say Bertie was glad to go!

“It was most encouraging to know that it was possible for me to land on the beaches only 10 days after D Day,” the King wrote.

hi ava !! i love all of ur edits so so much and they give me a lot of inspiration! one of the problems i have is fonts though so i was wondering if u have any favorite fonts u could share? thank u !! 💓

I have an absurd number of fonts downloaded—I’m literally like a child that’s been left unattended in the toy aisle at the store, I see any font that’s remotely aesthetically pleasing and I download it before I’ve even fully thought it through—and I love probably a similarly ridiculous number of them, so I’m going to narrow it down to fonts I’ve used in gifsets and also a couple of stragglers I thought were worth including.
