Entry to the recital is free but you can choose to purchase a £5 or £10 ticket and all proceeds will go to Westminster House Youth Club, a charity based in Nunhead, South East London. It provides purposeful activities, both recreational and educational for young people aged 8-18. The Club aims to support young people to make positive life choices.

A free recital featuring local musician and Jamaican opera singer Adwoa Dickson. Adwoa’s recital will celebrate the rich history of Jamaican folk music from the 20th century.

Jamaica has a rich musical heritage spanning a diversity of styles and forms. Throughout the island’s modern history, music has played a significant role in the social, political and economic life of its people. Adwoa’s recital for Black History Month draws from the wealth of Jamaica’s folk music – the music of the Jamaican people which, with its colourful range of forms, reflects the way of life of individuals or entire communities.

There are religious songs and secular songs; songs for marriage, birth, death and all rites of passage. There are songs for work and songs for play; songs of upliftment and hope, and songs of derision and despair; songs which tell of small happenings in remote villages and songs which give epic accounts of significant happenings in the island’s history. In all these, the Jamaican folk song gives voice to the heart, soul and experience of the Jamaican people.

Music in Jamaica is said to be the most powerful art form and culture heritage of the land.

Adwoa Dickson (Soprano) is a professional singer who trained with Eiddwen Harrhy at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where she graduated with distinction. She later studied with Mary Brennan and has sung at the Royal Opera House, Sadlers Wells, Pegasus Opera, Grand Union Orchestra, and Chineke Orchestra, amongst others.

Adwoa is a solo performer of classical and Caribbean music and was recently a part of a fabulous ensemble formed by Voquality who performed the vocals for Black Panther. Black Panther is the latest Marvel superhero film being released in the UK on 12th February 2018. Music composed by Ludwig Göransson and conducted by John Ashton Thomas at Abbey Road Studios.

Lorraine Liyanage is a London-born musician. She performs as a solo harpsichordist with recent recitals at the Horniman Museum and The Asylum in Peckham. She also runs the SE22 Piano School.

The Dulwich Music Festival is a member of Southwark Music Hub and is now in its 7th year. Events are funded by Southwark Council and supported by Portico.

Pauline (Peggy) Thomas

Mrs. Thomas, of Chestnut Ave., Kingston passed into eternal rest, after a battle with cancer.

She was born in New York City but raised in Pennsylvania. The daughter of Dorothy and Boyd Williams.

She attended schools in Kingston and Edwardsville. She worked in McCrory’s Store in Edwardsville for ten years.Her entire married life, she lived in Kingston. She raised five children in Kingston.

She will be remembered by her family and friends for her love of making crafts, such as plastic crafts, ceramics, afghans, collected angels, word search books, reading a lot, loved playing cards; as well as, loved playing games with her grandchildren.

Her family was most important to her.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Thomas, her sister, Dorothy Oleniak, and grandson, Eric Gronski; as well as, her beloved pet, Daisy, and Mya.

Peggy is survived by her six children, Fred, of Kingston, Kim and husband Dave, Harveys Lake, Tracey, Kingston, Steven and his wife Jen, Dickson City, Matt and Tina, Kingston, Suzanne and Gerry McDonald, Connecticut. She is also survived by grandchildren, David Gronski, Kerstyn Thomas, Grace Thomas, Ashton; great grandsons, David Gronski III, Colin, Kyle, Kelsey McDonald; brother, Boyd Williams and his wife Susan, their children, Jay Jay, Jason and Kelley and her husband Gary; and several nieces and nephews; as well as, pets, Millie, dogs, Fitty Kitty Mark and Smertle Turtle and Mozzie.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Dorothy “Dot” Hall Smith, 83, of Inman, SC died Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born August 6, 1937 in Spartanburg, SC she was the daughter of the late James Edward and Hessie Willet Hall and widow of Ladson Samuel Smith. Mrs. Smith was a member of Crossway Church, formerly Arcadia Freewill Baptist and enjoyed serving her church family. Survivors include her daughter, Sheila Boyd (Mark) of Inman, SC; son, Ricky Smith (Susan) of Dickson, TN; grandchildren, Joshua Smith (Briele), Adam Smith, Erica Boyd; great-grandsons, Ashton, Adien, and Evan and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by grandson, Matthew Tyler Boyd. Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, December 12, 2020 in Fort Prince Memorial Gardens, 125 Fort Prince Road, Wellford, SC 29385 conducted by The Rev. Dr. Kevin Smith and Pastor Javon Ruff. Visitation will follow at the graveside. The family will be at the home of Sheila Boyd. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
