How different cultures in ASOIAF view cats pt. 1

In our world, culture and religion shape how we view animals, and for this post, specifically cats. An example of how cats a view differently in cultures can be seen in Islamic cultures and Romani Cultures. Because cats clean themselves often, they are viewed as clean by Muslims and can be kept with the family. But for Romani, because of the Marime which states that the genital region is a source of impurity, a cat licking its own lower regions this becomes unclean. Roma still keep pets but they generally don’t let them sleep in their bed or lick them. This is all contrasted by American culture where a pet is viewed as a member of the family and will be referred to as the baby or child of their owners and is allowed to sleep in bed with them.

It’s so interesting and I want to expand this to how Westerosi people see cats and what types of cats they keep.

Dorne

Dorne takes a lot of inspiration from the Arabic would and I think it only makes sense for them to have a similar view of cats.

Cats keeping themselves clean makes them the perfect pets for humans. Cats are also known to pray to the seven if given a seat in a sept (cats love prayer rugs and it’s really cute). Both religious and hygienic, cats are viewed as more sophisticated than other animals and thus are kept closer by their families.

The salty Dornish are best known for their love of cats with many ancient breeds residing in their homes. The green orphans will sail with a cat or two and give them a fish from the days haul. Cats are also seen as omens of good fortune and many shops have a resident cat. Septa also keep cats control pests and because they will sleep at the feet of the seven when their statue is warm. The Turkish Van and Turkish Angora are both old and rare breeds of cats that would flourish in Dorne.

The Sandy Dornish also enjoy cats. Because cats naturally retain more water than dogs, they are fitted to live in the desert. These cats are some of the more wild ones as it’s common for the domestic cat to mix is wild cats. During harsh sandstorms, the Dornish will wrap the cats up in a blanket to protect them from the elements. Cats are known to love this and scene request it when their is no sand storm. The Savannah cat is a cross between wild Serval and a domestic short hair cat.

The stony Dornish are less attached to cats than the Sandy or salty Dornish. Every house hold does have a cat and it’s common for cats to sleep in the room of their favorite person, but the stony Dornish believe that cats have some impurity to them because they lick their own genitals. Families will often perform a cleaning ritual on their cats by wiping them down with a wet cloth to cleanse them of impurity. Cats in stony Dorne are slender and very angular, making them great at slipping through stony hills and along steep walls. The Cornish Rex and Devon Rex are popular cat breeds.

The Iron Islands

Cats were a big part of Scandinavian culture. The goddess Freya had her chariot pulled by Norwegian Forest cats (also called fairy cats) and it was custom for a groom to give his bride a kitten as a wedding gift. For Vikings specifically, cats were kept to control the pests on ship.

Because the Iron Islands is more based on mythical Viking culture than historical Scandinavian culture, we can have some fun with the cats.

Ships are a big part of the iron islands culture, so each ship should have a cat or two. Perhaps to “bless” a ship before it sets off, a kitten is brought into the ship and makes it their own. I also see the Ironman have a very communal ownership of the cats. Fisherman will give the cats some of their catch as part of a good luck ceremony and people will set up small cat houses for them. They could also view a cat staying with you as a sign of good luck. But because of Thai communal ownership, it would probably be taboo to try and keep a cat to yourself. The iron islanders see a cat as not belonging to a person but to a ship or island.

Types of cats I think the iron islanders would have. Because they’re kind of weird, I think some weird breeds would fit. The Selkirk Rex is known for playing in water, being loyal to their human, and also have some curly fur!

The Andal Kingdoms

The Andals had a similar relationship to cats that Europeans had before the Black Death. For the Andals, cats were viewed as mainly pest control for their farms and cities. People rarely tries to socialize kittens when born which led to people believing cats were naturally aggressive.

It wasn’t until Maesters discovered that cats help prevent the spread of disease by killing rats that cats became a more popular household animal.

The reach was the first kingdom to become very found of the cat. They were perfect help for their farms and perfect pest control for old town. Old Town holds a celebration of cats each year to thank them for preventing extreme disease outbreaks from happening in the city. The Redwyne family is famous for breeding Persians cats that resemble the pugs they breed with short faces. Rich families have a few Persian cats that they dress up as little lords and ladies as an extra show of wealth.

In the storm lands and riverlands, cats are seen as antithetical to the land. The kingdom’s natural wetness drives cats away. Fisherman are often at odds with local cat populations as they fight over fish. Despite the general population’s disinterest in cats, they are a common staple at inns and bars as they keep rats away from the straw and wheat. Patrons consider seeing a cat with folded ears as a lucky charm that their stay at the inn will be a pleasant one.

my favourite headcanon that i've come up for my fic with that i will now integrate into my general belief system about asoiaf is that jon knows how to dance.

so basically, when the stark kids were younger, catelyn wanted sansa and arya to take dance lessons, but arya only would do it if jon joined as well. he didn't want to, and neither did catelyn, but it was the only way for arya to take the lessons. robb made fun of jon when he first learned of that, but catelyn instantly made him join as well, thinking as a future lord he would benefit. bran didn't want to be left out and joined as well. theon thought himself above that and mocked all of them, but somehow ended up joining as well (no one truly knows how that happened).

Sansa loves having her hair braided. She can do it on her own but she prefers someone else to do it.

Ned was actually pretty good at it but was always neverous when she asked him. He also sometimes braided Catelyn’s hair when she was pregnant or just wanted to. It calms him down to braid hair.

Robb is actually really bad at braiding hair but is slowly getting better as he keeps trying and praticing.

Jon is the best of them all and she usually chooses him. Sansa was hesitant at first to ask him to, scared that he would say no or do a bad job, but he actually is naturally good at it. (Sansa cried the first time he braided her hair after reclaiming Winterfell, it reminded her to much of how Catelyn braided it).

Arya used to braid her hair at night in their chambers sometimes. Though she threatened Sansa that if she told anyone she would coem to regret it.

Bran never really tried but he was about the same as Robb, but he had no desire to practice. Though Sansa knew if she ever asked then he would try to make her happy.

Rickon was too young to try before Sansa left for the south, but he loved her hair. After he got out of the stage of pulling it harshly, he would bury his face in it when she would carry him or lye him down for bed.

Theon was actually really good at braiding her hair (and actually loved doing it) , but would never admit it and would usually never do it. He broke down the first time she asked him to do it after his escape from Ramsey.

・We've seen this particularly true with King Jaehaerys & Queen Alysanne - the riders of Silverwing and Vermithor (bringing this up because I want to show it's canon - I just love dragons in love okay?!)

・Vermithor had always been a more introverted dragon; preferring the company of Jahaerys, Silverwing and by extension - Alysanne.

・Well, introverted can also be interpreted as grumpy.

・The only way to lighten his mood is for Silverwing to be in his presence.

・They were hatchlings together; being placed in the cribs of baby Alysanne and Jaehaerys by their eldest sister, Rhaena

・Vermithor was the only other dragon that Silverwing felt safe with. She would never openly show it, but Vermithor has always known. It's why he's always been aggressive when another dragon notices Silverwing

・Until Alysanne & Jaehaerys were in their preteens, they were constantly in danger.

・So Vermithor and Silverwing constantly stuck together

・Even when their riders didn't see each other as romantic interests, the dragons never left each other for more than an hour

・Both great at hunting, Vermithor has more of a ruthless side; well, an extreme ruthlessness that has gotten many injured and ... killed.

・The personification of Silverwing would be a woman who has always done the right thing. Foreseeing what is needed, an A+ student, eldest sister energy, perfectionist, blonde/white hair, grey eyes, understands the way of things - traditions and such.

・As a man, Vermithor would be the grumpy, only likes one person, anti-hero. The partner who would kill for you. Probably has and you don't know it. But does his best to shield you from the harshness of the world.

Some random fashion/hairstyle/accessory headcanons for asoiaf. total and complete mashup of historical periods of the middle ages

I think women in the Stormlands are all about those wimples, snoods, cauls, etc cause you know, wind and all that. I think the higher up the chain of nobility a woman gets, the less she covers her hair up - it shows a pretty high level of wealth and privilege to have the time to sit for hours while a servant pins hair up in an elaborate style made to hold in the wind. As well as the privilege noble ladies have of being able to just go inside when the weather is stormy, as opposed to smallfolk who potentially don’t have that option when they’re running farms and shops (and therefore need something to hold their hair with little effort 24/7)

I think the Riverlands are pretty similar to the Stormlands in that they are generally a more practical sort of people, and wealth is displayed more through impractical items to wear and/or make. Fuckoff big and weird headgear, ruffs that take a lot of time and fabric to make, farthingales (even if that is pushing it on the “middle ages” time period) and especially French farthingales on special occasions

Westerlands on the other hand? It’s precious metals, jewelry, gemstones embroidered into clothing, gold braid, velvet, fur, every ostentatious display of wealth you can think of. I also like them wearing farthingales, since they’re right next to the Riverlands and I like them in similar but slightly different styles (for reasons that will go in another post). In general I also like the idea that clothing gets less structured as one gets further south, so the Riverlands and Westerlands are the only ones wearing farthingales

The Reach is a very romantic culture, so I think the women there would want to show off their hair while still staying within the realm of Westerosi modesty. Unmarried women wear their hair “down” but still held back with braids in some way, while unmarried women wear something close to a balzo so they can show their hair while still keeping it “covered”. The Reach is a pretty big region, so as you get closer to the Riverlands you start to see some escoffions, as you get closer to the Stormlands you start to see more elaborate braids and cauls, etc.

So we been knew that Iron Islanders are Vikings but I do actually love Viking clothing for them specifically because of the little brooches/pins/patches they wear to hold the straps on their strap dresses. Vikings historically would have used these to attach and carry various items, and it does feel very Iron Islands for their few bits of decoration to also serve a practical purpose.

I like to headcanon that while Jon favors his mother in his appearance, he actually makes the same face expressions with his father ( when he laughs, when he broods etc).

So when he will eventually meet people who knew Rhaegar personally, like Barristan Selmy or JonCon they will be surprised to see how much this supposedly unrelated to Targs boy is resembling the former prince.

How cats are viewed in Westeros part 2

The Andal kingdoms

The westerlands divide themselves by which house favors cats and which favor dogs. For houses like Lannister and Reyne are naturally drawn to cats based on their house sigil. But houses along the coast also favor the cats as companions for sailors and lighthouse men. The cat’s proclivity to isolation makes them the perfect companion animal for these men. Because of this, cats are considered a masculine creature for costal westerlings while most inland westerlings consider them feminine. Most Westerling cats are tailless due to a gene mutation that become popular.

The Vale is not know for its agriculture but for its husbandry of sheep. Luckily, cats love sheep. Cats in the Vale are seen as barn cats. They live and work on farms with farm animals. Because of this, the Valemen see cats in a very similar way to other barn animals. You can pet and love on a cat, but they stay outside. Cats come in a variety of colors and patterns in the vale with the most common being Tabbies, Calicos, and Torties.

The North

The north is deeply connected with cats. Cats are viewed as a sacred species that is connected to the old gods. Cats often sleep in Weirwood trees or just hang out in them making them look like they are worshipping the gods as well.

Cats are often placed in the cribs of newborns to help keep them warm and calm the child. The cats will lick the baby’s face to calm them down and keep them from waking the parents and to get any milk the child had on their face.

Multiple villages in the north have stories of abandoned babies being saved by a cat cuddling up to them and keeping them warm until help arrived.

In towns closer to the neck, the most common type of cat is a Siberian cat. The closer to the wall you get, the more common the Norwegian forest cat, or fairy cat, is.

Beyond the Wall

The free folk hold much the same opinions and traditions around cats that the men of the north do. The only difference is that they prefer orange cats as a sign of good luck. After a wildling kidnaps his future wife, it is customary to gift her an orange cat. The cats of the free folk are much larger than any other, growing to be 20 pounds in size. The cats will sleep in their owners sleeping bags to keep warm and wounded freefolk will have a cat stay guard over them, purring to comfort and heal their wounds.

The Valyrians

Cats as a domestic pet did not exist in old Valyria, the only pet a dragon lord needed was his dragon. When the Targaryens first arrived on dragon stone, there was a local cat population. One of the cats had a genetic mutation causing it to not grow hair. The Targaryens took this cat and bred it to create a bunch of hairless cats. They are as unique, beautiful, and unsettling as the Targaryens.

No one asks but here are what Jaime and Brienne's would wear if they're in the modern era as I'm scrolling through aimlessly trying to find clothes myself:

BRIENNE: Brinny is a TRUE supporter of local-made clothes. A LOT of vintage shopping involves but with her physic, it's quite hard to find clothes her size so she goes to men's section. Has her dad's hand-me-down buttons ups, If she buys new clothes, it's probably very well made with fabrics like wool and cashmere. Always would buy local too and would spurge on custom suits if she has extra to spend if she isn't buy some random knickknacks-which she always does lol. Most her jewellery are silver and vintage!

A lot of earth tones in her closet and good quality SOCKS! JUMPSUITS! SWEATERS!

JAIME: This mf has no concept of money the only currency in the world that matters is ATTENTION! Jaime would wearing some of the outrageous, loud-logo luxury brands with bright ass colours and he would still looks good cause he's pretty!

The only hand-me-downs(?) are his mom's (gold) jewellery. A lot of nice colours custom, expensive suits though (white, reds, greens, browns) just to look cunty as he surviving the corporate world his dad dragged him into.

His taste with scarfs are IMMACULATE and a collector of it. Don't like wristwatches but LOVES pocket watches. And his nails always clean and well manicured ✨✨✨
