What A Princess Dreams Of

Summary: Snow White rarely dreams, but when she does, it's always the same face she sees. Read on AO3.

Snow White rarely had dreams anymore. Ever since moving from the Homelands, nights were restless and her mind found no room for dreams. Aside from the occasional nightmare about her time back home, her mind was mostly concerned with thoughts of her deputy mayor duties.

But when she did dream, it was always the same subject that haunted her nightly visions. She was lying on a bed in some strange apartment, possibly hers, but it was dark enough that it was hard to tell. The only light came from a neon sign just outside her window that sent beaming red light into the room. She turned her head in the direction of the window, and there he was.

Bigby Wolf stood in front of the window gazing out between the cracks in the window blinds. In the dim light, he was only a silhouette, his broad shoulders traced by the red light emitting from outside. Upon closer look she realized his usual white buttoned-down shirt and black tie were gone, leaving only bare, hairy flesh.

And she could smell him too. The sweet, thick scent of Huff n’ Puff, the scent that always alerted her that the Big Bad Wolf was nearby, that crap brand only he smoked. The scent overwhelmed her nose.

He glanced over his shoulder to look at her, then turned around. Snow saw the small orange glow of a burning cigarette and a wisp of smoke shrouded him. He lifted the cigarette to his lips and took a long drag.

My god, he was handsome. Snow couldn’t help but glaze her eyes down his body. He was half-naked, wearing only a pair of dark jeans. Her eyes rolled down his hairy chest, his well-defined torso, and arms, the dark whiskers along his face. His wolf eyes gleamed gold in the dark.

Bigby pressed out the cigarette on the window sill then flicked it to the side. He took slow steps close to the bed, his eyes boring down on her. Snow glanced down and realized she was wearing his shirt. Only his shirt. His white buttoned-down was too big for her and covered her body down to her hips, just enough to cover her underwear. There was a chill in the room, but his shirt kept her warm. She could feel his body heat lingering on it, and smell his scent on it.

Bigby stood at the end of the bed. He pressed a knee onto the mattress, and then leaned down and crawled across the bed with canine-like movements. As he crawled on top of her, he slowly brushed his lips from her stomach, up her chest between her breasts, and up her neck. He paused at her face, hovering his lips just over hers, tempting her with a promise of a kiss. Snow felt an itch to close the space between them, press her lips to his warm stubble, but she was frozen in place. She could feel his breath on her mouth and she could practically taste him: cigarettes and whiskey.

Her eyes were fixed on his, but they wandered down the rest of his body. The heat wafting off his bare chest was enticing, and his jeans slid down his hips in a way that made her shiver with desire. 

He saw her eyes exploring him, and she could sense a slight grin on his face. His whiskers brushed against her neck and cheeks, sending a spike of heat down her body. His lips traced up her neck to her ear and whispered in a low, gravelly voice.

“I love you, Snow.”

The words sent a flutter through her heart like never before. She looked at him in the dim red light, the golden glow in his eyes. She wanted to reach up and touch him, run her fingers through his hair, bring him closer and kiss him until…

A light struck Snow’s eyes and they shuttered open. She lifted her head up and looked around. The red neon light was gone, replaced by harsh moonlight streaking from her apartment window. Bigby was gone, and she was all alone in her bed.

Snow let out a sigh and dropped her head down on the pillow. She closed her eyes as if she could bring herself back to the dream, find a way back to him…

“I love you too, Bigby…”

I'm not sure why I felt the need to do this at five am, but I made a list of the names of taverns, shops, and inns in canon.

Next up! Hermes vs Kratos.

Hermes was Judith's father, who left her behind in Temza to do research in Aspio where he either fathered or mentored another kid that he never told Judith about. Then he died and left her to clean up the mess his inventions caused in the world.

Then there's Kratos, who.... well. There's a lot. After believing his son had died, he found him again at the age of 17, did not tell him about their relation, fought against him multiple times, spent the bulk of the game going back and forth on helping Lloyd vs working for the enemy, and ultimately tasked Lloyd with killing him to break Origin's Seal. I'm summarizing a lot.

im currently midway thru the ruins near aspio 4-ish hours of gameplay my thoughts on vesperia so far:

- first of all yuri's character is very wudbsjxuskxn to me bc omg he is really this Cool Bishounen Capable Cool archetype played straight and its like.. i cannot for the love of me recall the last time i encountered a character like this, especially as a protagonist. like the closest character i can think of is fucking... Batman. but he isnt a bishounen. and like maybe squall and zidane come close in being a Cool And Capable protags but the thing abt them and every ff protag really (that i know) is that they are Dorks (and no i didnt include cloud as a Cool And Capable protag bc hes just cosplaying as a cool guy, cuz he literally has a mental episode in like the first 2 minutes of gameplay. hes awesome but cloud strife is not a Cool guy) but yuri is not a dork at all (at least so far) and its like. Such a new type of creature to me.. and so im excited on how his character is gonna be explored like whats gonna be his flaw or conflict cuz he seriously has it together so far.. itll probably be smth to do with flynn im guessing

- and speaking of flynn im really liking this buildup of going after flynn like we keep talking about flynn flynn flynn all while we never catch a glimpse of him, its sooo interesting like surely Somethinggg will happen when we meet him.. heehee hee

- also i love how super upfront this game is abt its themes of classism LOL... like w abyss and most other games ive played it takes a while for u to piece together what the game is thematically abt. but this game has it right out of the gate with 'Man The Nobles Are Opressing The Lower Class This Sucks I Hate Nobles They Are Monopolizing Resources The Guilds Offer An Alternative For Specialized Labor And I Hate The Rich And wjsjcnjskdk im honestly loving it

- i already said this but its worth repeating but this game is SOOOO BEAUTIFUL omg its so smooth too and like I Can See. omg. tbf i came from abyss 3ds which is like. god. GOD THAT PORT WAS UGLYJRSJXN but yeah its just incredible to have... smooth framerates... DETAILS I CAN LOOK AT.... i love it 😁 (and ofc this makes me so hopeful and excited for a possible abyss release that looks this good)

- and i already said this but its worth repeating part 2 but again THE DYNAMIC CAMERAS!!! ITS SO MUCH BETTER THAN ABYSS.... WAHOOSOSODKNX

- also the musicccc is saur interesting like theres some parts where its unexpectedly funky like woah..

- and lastly its kinda 💀 by how quickly ive gotten so many party members like huh.. it took a while for anise to join the party in abyss didnt it?? or maybe im just going thru the game faster than i did w abyss... idk but karol joining was kinda so random IM NOT AGAINST IT! but its just like oh ok a kid is tagging along now 😭 and ill see what reason there is for rita to stick with us... Hmmmm

For Talk Shop Tuesday, is there a trope or genre that you enjoy writing but often find difficult?

Things with bleak settings can be difficult because they're going to be angsty-er than normal from the get-go.

Post Apocalypse Survival Guide was one that flowed surprisingly well despite the bleak setting and I'd love to return to it with a sequel one day... but that sequel is definitely not cooperating, so it remains a standalone for now. (I loved writing Earth-not-specified!Hartley in this fic and I want to come back to him again.)

I've also got the Ripple Effect series that I'm hoping to make some progress on this year. The premise of the series is that Yuri Lowell is basically erased from the timeline up until the point of the event that erased him, so the events of Tales of Vesperia played out very differently. Without Yuri there being a spanner in the works, Alexei won. Of course, Yuri is right back to being a spanner in the works - showing Raven he's got more choices than he was aware of and making a bee-line for Rita Mordio who is just itching for an excuse to get away from Aspio - but Estelle's current fate is pretty awful and it's going to take some time before Yuri (with Rita doing the heavy lifting on the magic front) can rescue her. The world itself is in dire straights. The Adephagos trapped outside the planet's atmosphere is no longer dealt with and the high aer levels mean they're at risk for more Adephagos being created... if Alexei doesn't kill off the remaining Entelexeia first anyway.

My other ongoing Tales of Vesperia series (Folk Heroes) is far less bleak, but it opens with a civil war not unlike what's seen during the later part of the game while blending in some early game elements to establish the AU setting. It hasn't gotten too dark yet, but I think just knowing where it'll wind up at a few points down the road makes it more difficult to write. That said, the inspiration for this one came in part from Robin Hood, which is how the series got it's name, so it's definitely a much lighter series over all than the apocalypse-how setting of Ripple Effect.

TALES OF VESPERIA . hailing from a family of talented mages and blastia researchers , richeh began studying under the mages of aspio at a young age . she would soon come to find , however , that she hated their ways of teaching & the expectations placed upon her . one day , she met qifrey by chance when the mage paid a brief visit to aspio – soon after , she would flee her home to live and learn with him .

CRITICAL ROLE . at a very young age , richeh followed in her older brother’s footsteps and was accepted into the soltryce academy . she longed to receive the private instruction of trent ikithon , just like riliphin – and perhaps she was close to achieving her dream . however , after sneaking away to spy on her brother’s instruction , she would soon come to understand the archmage’s abuse & corruption .

richeh would confide in qifrey , a former professor of the academy , and shortly thereafter come to learn under him – if only for her own protection , lest ikithon realize what she knew . she hasn’t given up on her brother , though . instead , she trains in the hopes of one day saving him , and putting a stop to trent ikithon .

These visits to Dahngrest were becoming more and more commonplace in Rita's life. She shouldn't have been surprised, really. When it was convenient for Brave Vesperia to use it as a meeting place, of course she would come all the way there to meet them. This was one such day, but at the same time Rita was there to share what she'd been learning about potential replacements for the blastia. Progress was, admittedly, slower than she would have liked. A small amount of progress was better than nothing, and she was eager to share what she'd learned.

Of course, some things never really did change. Just as it had been when Rita had first set foot in the guild city with the others, Dahngrest proved to be as lively as anything. By then, Rita was used to navigating the streets and avoiding colliding with others. Such was the benefit of needing to come to Dahngrest as often as she and the others had. She strode forward with confidence, dipping and moving about to avoid various guild members. That was, of course, until someone caught her eye for just a moment.

There, moving in the opposite direction to her as the crowd thinned, was someone clad in a mage's cloak. Their hood was covering their face just enough so Rita couldn't immediately identify them as she walked closer to her destination. For just a heartbeat, Rita looked back and decided it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. Rita wasn't the only mage out there, even if she didn't often don her mage's cloak. Maybe it was just another mage getting ready to go somewhere else in Dahngrest. That was the thought process, at least, until Rita thought more about the encounter.

She squinted. The more she thought about it, the less sense it made. She liked to think that she knew at least a majority of the mages that hailed from Aspio. Even the ones who had been scattered by what had happened to their beloved city when Tarqaron rose should have been recognizable to her, but she couldn't put a name or face to this stranger. Assuming they were a mage at all, of course. Was someone parading around like a mage? For what purpose? Rita's mind raced, and she did the only thing she could think to do. Her pace picked up as she started to follow the stranger. Something wasn't right.

"H-Hey! You!" It was the first thing Rita could even think to say. Not so genius mage of her, she knew, but she was caught off guard. Somehow, she managed to catch up and tried to get in front of the stranger. She was right back to squinting as she looked him over. "Pretty sure there aren't any mages from Aspio living around here. And I think I'd know a cloak like that anywhere. So who the hell are you?"

Already, Rita could imagine some people thinking she was leaping to conclusions. Maybe she was. She couldn't help it in this case, though. When she felt like something was off, surely it made sense for her to pursue it. Right?

to be fair Hermes did, like, leave a brewing apocalypse for his daughter to clean up, right? That at least Implies certain things.

​This is a good point, and if you consider stuff from the side material, he has even more questionable parenting in regards to abandoning Judith to fuck around in Aspio for while. So, I think I will replace Dirk with Hermes, because there is no way Dirk will win a single round of "worst parent" but there is discussion to be had about Hermes.

And then the 32nd person will be Uncle Alba from DotNW. And that should give us the bracket!

It also occurs to me that it is funny to be starting this contest right before Christmas, the season most focused on happy family love.

what even are the rights theyve thrown away like all i can think of is that theyre no longer entitled to protection by the knights or ig access to aspio research.. which is funny cuz the game very thoroughly shows how the knights fail to protect its citizens and also we had to fucking break into aspio anyways Lol the average commoner doesnt know whats going on in the governments oil and gas i mean blastia research department.. do i rly hv to say anything else [insert leftist yapping here]
