I’ve seen people criticize Asteroid City for obfuscating the story unnecessarily, and I have to say that if you’ve read The Celluloid Closet or seen the documentary, you’d know the layers of meaning imbued in Hays Code films that couldn’t be expressed explicitly. The love story between Jones and Conrad frames the play and the themes of isolation and alienation queer people felt in the 1950s are written in the play. The movie is about subtext made textual through telling the lives of the queer people who made the play a reality.

i saw asteroid city just now. super fucking good even if oliver says he "didnt get it" cause you dont HAVE TO but also i feel like its themes and messages came through well… i also love the look of it in the opening credits it said "color by" so i wondered if it was black and white and then colorized but i dont think so. the colors fit the film perfectly though

The alien is the meaning of life. While rehearsing, Augie says there’s so much left of the world to see and Midge’s character says, “I’ve already seen it,” after dying by suicide. Then the alien lands and disrupts everything. There was no way they could’ve predicted the alien’s presence, just as Conrad could’ve never predicted Jones dropping into his study. The alien changed Augie’s life. Jones changed Conrad’s life. There’s always a reason to live because you truly never know what is going to happen next.
