venting fun fact: astronomers do not have consistent naming conventions for almost anything. the same object in the night sky, be it a star, nebula, galaxy, protostar, whatever, will almost always have 10 different names and it's difficult to determine whether it's the same thing or different parts of a binary star! Making the mistake that "Star 1234A" and "Star 1234" were the same object is something that has cost me weeks of research time.

an actually fun fun fact: in early science fiction (and actual astronomy) it was often believed that there was not only life on Mars, but potentially a flourishing civilization under the clouds of Venus! Early low resolution photos appeared to have "towers" poking out of the tops of the clouds, which some took to be evidence of life. What is your favorite class of stars?

Good question, and it depends on what you mean by that. Let me show you a graph

This is the HR (Hertzsprung Russel) diagram, which plots Luminosity (brightness) on the y-axis, and the temperature on the x-axis. That temperature is what is most commonly used for defining the "class" of stars. The most common classification scheme, developed by Annie Jump Cannon (who I remember because women in science!), has the categories O, B, A, F, G, K, and M based on the color of the star, which is effectively the same variable as temperature. Since then we've had to add a few more categories on the bottom for infrared objects like cool dwarfs, which are L, T, and Y. There are other classification schemes, but this is the one I've been taught at every level of school and used in my own work so this is what I'm familiar with.

Side tangent: fantasy dwarf is plural dwarves, astronomy red dwarf and irl people with dwarfism become plural dwarfs. This is because Tolkein made a mistake and now we all live with the consequences.

I think my favorite stars are those on the furthest left end of the graph, the big blue stars who will burn out so much faster than the others. They sacrificed longevity for sheer magnitude of light, glowing that powerful blue through the night. Also I just like cool colors and I find blue stars more aesthetically appealing than yellow or red, for some inexplicable reason. Of course being near one of them would be bad, worse for my sensory issues for sure, but seeing them from far away is nice.

Being on Testosterone!

When I was looking for resources for what to expect when being on T, I couldn’t find a lot that wasn’t either strictly medical or something that didn’t apply to me for WHATEVER reason. So I’m making this post as a way to document my own journey and maybe help answer some questions 🤷‍♂️ For context I am using Testosterone Gel, and I had to stop taking it for a month while I got an ✨abortion✨ but I have been back on it for just over 6 weeks

Please be aware that I do talk about my experience being pregnant on T, T induced mood swings and being bipolar, changes in eating habits and changes in menstrual cycles.

December (Started T)

The Appointment

I went to planned parenthood to get on HRT. They were super helpful over the phone but there was some confusion over if my insurance would cover the appointment or not and my insurance company wouldn’t answer my questions when I called them. They did end up covering the appointment thankfully. At the appointment I didn’t have to do any blood work but they did need to prick my finger to test various levels! I have PTSD so that was a struggle but they were incredibly patient! My next appointment was scheduled for three months later. They explained that I will have appointments every three months for a while so they can check in on stuff.

Getting The Prescription

I get my testosterone from CVS and have a copay of $5. One thing of gel lasts a month and I was prescribed 3. There was some issues with CVS actually getting the prescription ready. Planned parenthood said they approved everything and the CVS app was telling me I could go pick up my prescription but when I called they kept saying it needed to be approved. It could just have been an issue with the pharmacy I went to, but be prepared that it might take a day or so to get your prescription!

Changes

I didn’t notice too much during my first month of being on T, but I was going through various medical issues at the time which severely affected how aware of changes I was! My partner at the time commented on my voice being deeper after about 2 weeks!.

Pregnancy on T

So I got pregnant, which was very unintentional. We didn’t noticed because I was having some other health issues at the time but thankfully one of my doctors did a pregnancy test and we found that out within the window of being able to get an abortion. I ended up having a false miscarriage, which could have been because of a variety of things including the testosterone. I came off T not long after finding out and didn’t go back on it until after the majority of the side effects of the abortion had stopped. If you might be pregnant obviously stop taking testosterone.

January (Being off T)

Changes

My voice slowly went back to where it was before I went on T, which I definitely noticed.

My period never came, though that could be because of the abortion.

February (Getting back on T)

Changes

This go around I noticed a significant burst of energy in my day to day life when I started back on T! That was a super welcome surprise as I don’t typically have a lot of energy.

I noticed my voice started to dip a bit around the 3 week mark but it wasn’t to a noticeable degree.

The HUNGER. Oh my god, I was so so so hungry the entirety of February! I am underweight and have typically struggled with eating for a variety of reasons. But I literally could not stop eating! I recommend having PLENTY of snacks on hand!

I started noticing some minor mood swings around the 4 week mark, nothing super major but I’m bipolar so I may be understating it. There was a lot of tears over dumb things and immediately stoping crying because of something even dumber. Just felt like high-school all over again tbh.

I didn’t get my period, but the bleeding never really stopped from the abortion so I could have had a light one and just not noticed.

Getting Back on T

I had some of my original bottle of gel left so when I started back on T I just used the rest of it and requested a refill via the CVS app when I was running low!

I called planned parenthood to push back the date of my three week appointment and they were super understanding! (We love planned parenthood 💕)

March - Current Month, 6 weeks and 3 days on T

Changes

The burst of energy didn’t last long, but I am not as physically tired as I was before being on T.

The people around me started pointing out my voice getting deeper around 5 weeks in and my mom (who is in the denial stage of it all) mentioned it around the 6 week mark. I can definitely tell my voice is getting deeper and it’s SO exciting! The voice cracks are slightly annoying but are really only super bad when I am at work or somewhere when I am trying to pitch up my voice.

I am STILL so hungry but it’s a more manageable level now! I’ve gained 10 pounds since November after not being able to gain weight for 8 years. I attribute a lot of that to the testosterone but I can’t know for sure!

I started working out when I started T and I feel like there is a slight change in the muscle definition of my arms but I could be imagining that.

The mood swings are still pretty consistent, spring is a bad time for me and usually means more manic episodes but the depressive ones that follow have been more manageable.

I still haven’t had a period and the bleeding from the abortion still hasn’t stoped all the way.

I will continue to update this as time goes on!

Worldbuilding communities are hard to sustain, because at some point you run into the issue of how to keep interaction going. This is less of an issue in collaborative projects, but for creating a community space for people to share their own worlds, idk I've seen that usually it just hits a saturation point where its hard to even have conversations about the projects because either all questions have been answered or just, its impossible to stay invested in everything.
