Tails for All! - Abaddon edition
Other parts: Kings | Gehenna | Tartaros | Hades | Avisos | Nilfheim | Paradise Lost
Dantalian
Tumblr media
A small fluffy ball, slightly elongated towards the top. It looks like a deer, but with black fur instead of brown.
He's glad he has small horns because it makes him look less dangerous. He is even happier with his little tail. It's cute and matches Sailor Moon's uniform more than any nasty weapon. He only wishes you could write on it.
Asmodeus doesn't like his tail because, unlike the other two, he can't hold Dantalian by the tail like on a leash. Dantalian offered to attach barbed wire to his tail. You don't know how this conversation went further.
His tail smells lovely, like almonds. Why? Nobody knows.
The best anti-stress squeeze in all of Hell.
Sensitiveness 10/10. Stand on it. Crush it. Tear out the fur. Set it on fire. The more you abuse it, the better.
He will be honestly surprised when you start stroking and kissing him, but... hey, it's actually nice too!
Phenix
Tumblr media
A long, feathery tail. The feathers are blurry because they are made of pure flames, you can't see where the feathers end and the fire begins. The whole thing is long up to the feet.
The color of his tail depends on his emotions, in arousal the shades change between red, orange and white when he cums (so usually).
Asmodeus asked Beelzebub to give Phenix a piercing at the base of his tail. Beel could not agree, because he was not his citizen, but under his watchful eye, Asmo did it himself and put a padlock on Phenix, thanks to which his tail does not burn inanimated objects.
Phenix can actually regulate whether his tail will burn someone or not, but he's too excited to consider such things.
Perfect for fighting. Angel feathers smell beautiful when they burn. In addition, severed limbs can be burned to prevent the enemy from bleeding out too quickly.
When not excited, his tail curls up and is much smaller and about the size of Stolas. At least that's what Morax said. No one else can confirm or deny.
Sensitiveness ?/10. How do you want to touch the fire?
In fact, you saw that a one person can touch Phenix's tail whenever he wants. But Asmo is a mean bastard and all you will hear from him is "try it yourself".
In bed it can only be used as a night lamp. At least until you teach that little bird to keep his emotions in check (good luck).
Ronove
Tumblr media
Calf-length, very hard, covered with stone-hard skin, with a ball the size of a fist at the end. Morningstar, actually. Dark, gray skin, rough. He actually has patches like a dinosaur.
The spines are long, sharp and hooked at the tip. They will tear out a piece of meat if they get stuck.
Can retract spikes. He controls them much better than Phenix controls his flame. When you're dealing with just the ball, it's very nicely slick and in the right shape... wait, that should have been at the end.
When he was younger and Asmodeus told him to shut up, he put his tail in his mouth. Now it's a bit too big. You can lick it too... wait, yes, at the end. Again. Oops.
Perfect massager. Heavy enough that you can feel it running along your back and shoulders, but not overwhelming.
Sensitiveness 7/10. He loves playing with his tail when you are together. The tip and base are the most sensitive. Play with them, but not too gently, spankings and whips are most desirable.
Rough skin is perfect for grinding. Besides, he'd love to see it.

…well, we know about one more figure from this country. And I have an unhealthy obsession with him. He's so hot he burned a hole in my brain, and he isn't even out yet. We only know his appearance from Love Unholyc, but just let's have some fun, I'll try to fit him something. We'll see how this post ages lol.
Asmodeus
Tumblr media
Scorpion tail. As thick as his arms, black as his hair, hard and shiny, with a sting at the end.
At first, his tail is confused with Beel and vice versa. In fact, they are two completely different things. Beel is much more flexible and thinner, while Asmo is larger and harder.
He likes to sit on a chaise-longue-like throne in a brothel-looking hall, hold you in his lap, wrap his deadly tail around you, and watch Dantesque scenes at his feet with his queen by his side. The only thing missing is popcorn.
Like his hair, the tail is wrapped in barbed wire. Normal devils would prefer it had some sort of cover on it. The other kings wondered whether they should really do one to him.
Of course it's poisonous. The only antidote is to drink milk from his horn. If you don't please him, he will sting you to try harder. He likes watching you fight for your life…
...but he will never lose himself enough to do real harm to you. I mean, kill you. He will detoxify you long before you pass out.
By the way, do I need to mention that this poison is the strongest aphrodisiac in hell?
Sensitiveness 4/10. As opposed to being the embodiment of lust, his tail is used for fighting rather than caressing.
Yes, he will try to put his stinger in you. No, this is not a good idea. Of course he knows it, but he loves the horror and outrage on your face.

Just Another Day in Hades...(Requiem of the Survivors Event React II)
Tumblr media
Now wait a min! If you're seeing this first, go here ->
Already saw it? coooolll proceed~ TW://mentions of child abuse/experimentation
Still have some snacks left? Great. Cause we're trucking on the part twooo We left off where Levi is about to tell his nobles about his past, and while we don't get the full story, we do get a glimpse of what happened between them. Because I mean, look how excited Foras is about learning more about his majesty-
Tumblr media
That face <3
So Barb and Glas are talking briefly about how they wouldn't have guessed Orias was around the same age as Levi because the more powerful the devil is, the less they age (i guess in appearance which is why they have elderly-looking devils in Hell too)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I feel like this scene there'd be like a little struggle for him not to laugh just like one of those soft "oh these guys" kinda moment ya know? I prefer this Levi. I can like this Levi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He begins his lore, talking about how horrible it was at the 'farm'. The angels were quite frankly experimenting on children and left some of them in the worst of sorts. Levi even mentions that he and the others envied the dead devils because at least they didn't have to be there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So what's going on with Orias is that he was found already pretty "old" but more mummy-like in appearance, devils never get to that point in the first place without dying so you know this was pretty bad. He sounds like he could barely move or breathe or even think at that point. He then goes into detail about his encounter with Orias one time.
Tumblr media
Levi was the only one who survived other than Orias, so his strength was already recognized. The angels were being fucking disgusting toward the children and it was unknown how many of them there were. The story continues about how Levi felt staring at Orias and how he had a feeling of relating, wanting to be hopeful that they'll all get out of this somehow alive with the will to live. This small non-verbal connection they shared was pretty deep for Levi and he swore he'd see him again someday. Then that day happened, where the big fire mentioned in Chapter 5 broke out and the children escaped. As his peers held off the angels the best they could Levi ran and he encountered the monster and made a deal with it. The monster being that tentacle thing that comes out of the ground during his ultimate attack btw.
Tumblr media
So after Levi makes the contract it turns out that Orias was helping fend off the angels (now imagine these are demon children, mostly lower-ranking it seems other than Orias and Levi who are obviously stronger than most. but they are fending themselves against full adult angels. this is heavy) Then something happens while Levi is trying to help Orias escape with him, and Orias gets stabbed by an angel. At first all seems lost and Levi loses it and starts choking the angel that did it, and Orias is still alive! He lets him get his revenge by handing the angel over to him and he starts ripping his chest open. at this point in the story we see the hades bois reacting and Foras was like on the edge of his seat. all of them are so cute i swear.
The story continues and this is where the first sight of the angel's soul is seen by Orias and Levi and everyone else in the 'farm'. Orias swallows it and recognizes that his wrinkles are smooth. He utters the phrase "thank you for the meal" which I wasn't sure if directed toward the angel itself or Levi, but either way it seemed he was strong enough to help him fight. Levi further explains that he and Orias were separated though, and they didn't escape together. He wasn't sure if Orias stayed behind due to being caught or if he defeated the angels, but this event didn't make them comrades in the end. When Orias looks at Levi, his mouth is smiling but his eyes aren't. I'm wondering that even if Levi didn't do anything bad to Orias, he went crazy eating all of those angel souls, but then got himself a new obesession...
Tumblr media
He simply just wants to eat Levi. That's it. No grudges, no hard feelings, he just wants to eat his soul and that's the end of it. Now the bois are trying to wrap their head around why Levi is just pleased by it. Including Foras being like "I would never do that, but I get it Orias...I get it." and then fucking Glas-
Tumblr media
Sir, really? Lmao Plans for Hades domination let's go.
But then after all that stuff is going about, Orias starts shit again with trying to assassinate Levi and fails ofc. Literally tried to stab him and everything. Our Hades bois come through and protect Levi but also ya know humbling themselves and being like "he doesn't need us but we're happy to defend him anyway because it's what we're supposed to do" and Glas is still over here doing his "i'm overthrowing the king someday" threats and it's crazy to me. In the mean time though, Orias pitches a fit that he wasn't able to decapitate Levi. (sheesh) "I want just one bite, just one wah wah wah wah" Like goodness. I can hear him now complaining. Glas even questions this behavior because he's like...there ain't no way you're doing this on purpose...and well yeah I mean think about it his childhood was robbed, nothing but trauma, he gets to actually whine about something now and be childish so why not even if he is hundreds/thousands of years old.
Tumblr media
Levi makes a good point, but Orias protests and says that he would in fact kill him in front of everyone, but he gets jealous seeing his nobles surround him. (Barb thinks he's a liar though)
Tumblr media
And see? Levi pays him no mind at all, just brushes him off as if he was just being extra for no reason and wasn't trying to kill him just then.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So while he's watching Levi leave...he's being a little weirdo and thinking about how his soul tastes. Only he can see the color of Levi's soul and smell it. Foras tries to distract him and be like "So uh shouldn't you just stick to eating angel souls?" And Orias is like "silly child, why would I do that?" as if he isn't the 'child' here.
Tumblr media
Orias goes to explain though that he's still aging, not on the outside but inside and he's pretty much anticipating that death is near for him based on that alone. And that within the week, if he hasn't consumed a single angel soul he'd be useless. Foras though keeps prying and asking why not just eat a stronger angel since the ranks have different strengths, he even suggests to go for a seraphim angel, and Orias just goes "when the best dessert is in front you why go for the sugar?" basically he's not going for the basic shit, he wants the premium. Levi is premium pickings to him. (it's funny how Barb was like YUP makes sense) And Orias mentions that monster that swallows heaven that Levi made a contract with. I wonder then if Orias is only after Levi because he'd also gain something from that monster too? Idk maybe he just mentioned it just cause.
And after that Orias tries his bullshit again, which he's able to because Levi rarely leaves the palace unless he really has to (why is he me) Either trying to cut his head off and he even tried to fucking bite him like ʕTᴥT ʔ And Levi is just over here laughing it up. Foras even starts thinking something weird is going on and Glas and Barb are chillin' on it. For different reasons...lol Glas being like "hes unpleasantly powerful" and Barb being like "Orias is only a noble it's cool." Foras is the only one who cares as much T^T But a new development happens with Orias trying to test Levi
Tumblr media
He just sorta picks him up and throws him outside of his room just casually lol
Tumblr media
Barb is asking the hard questions when no one will....
Tumblr media
And here we go the bois hanging except Foras once again for trying to speak about what to do about Orias's behavior.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm crying, fucking Glas and Barb are having a great time so Levi doesn't wanna hang them anymore. Foras even is over there secretly wishing he was strung up too but he also feels special because Levi didn't do so. lol Levi explains that he doesn't kill Orias because if it weren't for his help back at the farm, then there would be no him to begin with. And that it's pretty much insulting for them to think he needs to be worried for.
Foras chimes in that it's presumptuous to think so and Glas is like
Tumblr media
because didn't he just say He and Barb were being too casual and not worrying about Levi was bad? Thanks my guy. Lol But he does make a point that if Orias really wanted his head, he'd summon his coffin first. And with that being said the nobles kinda just wander off from Levi and Glas starts ranting again about how it's unfair how Levi is pretty, has a miserable past, yadda ya and Foras is like "aye not too much on my majesty, now" and Glas straight up ignores him. We notice though that someone is missing. Sure Levi threw him out of the room but huh...seems susssss
Tumblr media
AND SUS INDEED CAUSE WHAT turns out our little fucking brat of a devil is out here scheming and plottin' with a fucking angel to take down Levi. It seems tho that the angel is kinda skeptical about the noose but -
Tumblr media
yeah Levi never uses it on him, so he has nothing to fear. But this is where I was like REALLY THO? Come on now T^T So it leads into Levi reading a letter that Orias sent, and it explains that other devils survived the incident that day and one of them wants to meet up but out of sight because he's scarred and ugly. It appears at first that Levi is gonna take the bait. And we get to see the angel he's teaming up with!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ah so this is one. Tbh I think he looks better in his disguise as a devil. if you all remember from the group photo of the Cherubs, he's the one with the burn mark and blonde hair so it seems Orias didn't have to do much to disguise him, he even changed his smell. Which is fucking wild to me.
Tumblr media
Orias is fucking lying bro this is not gonna work lmao
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lmao dude came strapped. And Orias is like "foreal?" and that's how I know he's lying to this angel because why would he care about how many reinforcements he brought with him? unless he's up to somethingggg. Screenshot limit AGAIN? UGHISFOISNFLKSFNS here goes a third post then lovelies

Luck? Ha!
A grumbling Jazz and an exhausted Allocer trudge through the door. It doesn't take a genius to figure out why the pair is so upset. Or rather who made them upset.
A certain red demon was the main suspect on your mind. But still, you might as well find out what the menace did now. "What happened this time?" You asked.
"I don't know why we keep falling for his stupid tricks!!!" Jazz rants as Allocer flops down into your lap. You stroke the boys' mane as he joins in.
"He keeps using the same tricks, but even though we're aware of it, we still fall for it." "You'd think we'd get lucky and win once, at least."
"Luck? Ha!" You snorted. You couldn't help yourself. "Jazzy sweetie, luck is a crutch. It is a concept that far too many rely on."
"But doesn't o-" "Orias-san, your sensei can certainly will things in his favor thanks to his bloodline magic, but he doesn't use it often." You cut off his argument.
"His use of it can be extremely dangerous for himself. Depending on what he uses it for, he can suffer from side effects of his magic. Or as he calls it bad luck. The bigger the risk he takes, the stronger the consequences are for him later."
"Either way, how is it they keep winning? I want to wipe that smug look off that bastards face just once!" You chuckle as Jazz gets riled up over Furfur again.
"The answer is rather simple, my darlings." You say as Jazz sits next to you. What a cute pout. You mean brooding, yes, definitely brooding and not pouty at all.
Both boys look at you expectantly. "Information." Is all you say. Allocer tilts his head at your remark. "Are you saying he's more knowledgeable than us?"
You can't help but coo at his confused face. "Not exactly, my dear, you see... it doesn't determine who's smarter. No, it's the knowledge you do have and how you use it."
Both boys frown obviously, not understanding. "Hmm, how to explain..." You lean back against the couch, thinking. Your eyes spot a deck of cards on the coffee table. No doubt left by one of the other kids.
An idea comes to mind. "Let me try in a way you might relate to." You pick up the cards. Shuffling them as you begin to speak.
"What's the probability of drawing the Ace of spades out of a deck with no jokers?" You remove the jokers from the deck and draw the Ace of spades. "Normaly, it's one in fifty."
You set that deck down and grab the unopen deck on the table again. You removed the jokers. "But what if it's a brand new deck?" The boys eyes widened as you asked this.
"The positions of the cards in a new deck are typically identical, so that means if you take the jokers out and draw the card at the very bottom." You again show them the Ace of spades. "It's Ace of spades almost 100% of the time."
Jazz trembles in rage, realizing what you meant, and Allocer is clenching his fists. "That's right, my dears. Nobody said anything about it being a new deck. Rather... neither of you thought to ask."
You can see the wheels turning in both boys' minds as you said this. You set the cards down again. Driving your point home.
"Being in the "know" gives someone the power to turn the probability of winning from a 1.92% chance to a hundred. Evidently, it's often the more knowledgeable party that becomes the victor." You had given them much to think about.
"So, you were aware of him cheating. That's a good start. But until you understand the true aspect of whatever he convinces you to play, he is going to win."
Jazz is seething, and Allocer remains quiet, obviously trying to think about what you said. "So you just need to become the more knowledgeable party, my sweets." You patted both of them on the head.
"You really think we can beat him?" Allocer asked. "Oh, I know you can. It may take some time. But once you manage it once, you'll be able to do it again till you knock down that wall."
You chuckle. Impossible goals were something your children were overly fond of after all. It was only a matter of time before they bleed that greedy demon dry.
Elsewhere general Furfur sneezes. "Someone must be talking about me. I bet it's my cute underlings! I'll have to see them again soon!"

@decimatlas asked: “ [ SHARED ] sender is laying on the floor/ground for some reason and receiver simply joins them. / matt & orias .. weirdos ”
By this point, Matt was getting pretty good at sensing when Orias was nearby, or at least entering the wards around the bunker. Sure enough, within a few minutes, his phone was buzzing and the demon was telling him he was outside. It didn’t seem urgent, so Matt figured this was more of a social call than anything else. When he finally closed the bunker door behind him, he had two beers and two sodas in a small holder, and walked through the cool night air in search of Orias.
He found him simply laying on the ground on the hill next to the building. Matt opened his mouth to ask him what he was doing, but the words didn’t come out. Instead, he simply closed it again and walked over, laying down next to the demon and setting the drinks down between them. As he looked up at the night sky and the stars overhead, Matt let out a long breath.
“You know...” He finally said after a few minutes. “We really couldn’t see the stars too much in San Francisco, the city was too bright. And I bitch about Kansas all the time but this... this is definitely a perk.”

One becomes easily accustomed to the sense of peace. It spills through one’s being, like a slow-acting poison - numbing its host to all else but its sweet lull. Eventually, one forgets to live without it, sinking into a state of content lethargy, gorging themself on the belief that such serenity might extend into the horizon of forever. That is, perhaps, an apt way to describe the state into which many of the subjects of the Holy Land had fallen, the thought of discord a far-off notion in the mind. Until shock held them by the throat, discord grinned its wicked smile from the shadows, and death stole away the one figure that kept the horrors of the world at bay.
May the fallen Star, Cador (who had, in one life, been known as Abraham), find harmony in all that he encounters.
The moon was near-rising, and still the final third of the Tridium had yet to make his appearance. They were meant to gather, to deliberate and commiserate in equal measure, to further plough the path of grandeur and success for the kingdom that they so loved, and the city that they held so dear. AZAZEL and GABRIEL, the Moon and the Sun respectively, sat at opposite ends of the table - making the absence of their Star all the more noticeable. It was the first time that they had entered the room without being greeted by the older man; the first time that they have found themselves waiting on him, and the first time that they have felt an unease settle so pervasively between them. Yet neither of them cared to acknowledge it, not quite yet. One messenger had already been sent to his quarters, then another - and both of them had returned with no Cador in sight, only eerily distinct expressions of anxiety and discomfort.
GABRIEL was the first to break the silence that had fallen over the two divine beings. “Perhaps we should send another messenger.”
“Perhaps we should admit to ourselves the truth,” AZAZEL countered, eyes meeting his.
The archangel arched his brow. “And perhaps we shouldn’t jump to conclusions.”
A third messenger was never sent, for the Sun and the Moon went forth themselves, seeking the missing piece that made them the formidable Tridium. The sun was nowhere to be found and the moon was slowly waking, stars bespeckling the sky as though they, too, were curious as to where Cador hid himself. He was one of them, was he not? How could he ever be led astray? There was none that could snuff out the light of a burning star; their existence only ceased by means of implosion, and Cador was never one that would dare relinquish any notion of greatness and glory by being his own undoing. A highly revered man, he was regarded as such by both the wealthy and the impoverished, widely-beloved by many of the mortals within the Holy Land. He had their hearts. Cador had suffered - for what is the loss of a son but the definition of it? Cador had risen to greatness: for is not greatness created in the ruthless elevation of oneself, rising from destitution and growingstrong for it?
And, with such greatness and glory, the perception of one’s limits becomes rather skewed. If he was loathed, which he certainly was by those who privately preferred more Heretical ideals, then he was meant to rise above it. If he was loved, then he knew that he held the people’s faith. He was untouchable. Death is nothing more than a far-off, tangential notion that is not a consequence of existence, but rather, an anomaly - to celestials and infernals… and, in truth, to Cador.
That is what AZAZEL and GABRIEL garnered from the rigid raise of his brows and his widened, glassy eyes, at least. They stood over his body, looking down at a corpse frozen in shock the splintered door crumbling behind them -as dead as the cadaver it had so diligently locked away. GABRIEL brushed the splinters from his sleeve as AZAZEL leaned closer, investigating the marks that hinted at Cador’s demise. Blotchy skin, red eyes. The remnants of foam around his mouth. His face had grown blue and, even now, as she pressed against the cold skin, she could feel the food that had lodged in his throat as he took his final mouthful:a fruit that his son had been known to favor. She wiped her fingers against Cador’s shirt before pulling away. The two divine beings looked at one another before AZAZEL shook her head. Stars did not die this way. They faded slowly, beautifully before implosion; they did not rot away.
The stench of artificial rot was in the air. Cador’s body was bloated with it. The stain of murder bespeckled his skin, was strewn about the room, and it felt heavy. The Star of the Tridium had been murdered, just as they were sinking into the honeyed lull of harmony. Should word get out, there could be war. The mortal faction would want reparations, if they ever knew the truth.
It was a good thing, then, that the Sun and the Moon knew how to keep their secrets.
Tumblr media
They wore veils as they walked among the streets of the Holy Land, as they went from village to village harkening the passing of the great Star, Cador. It had been known that he was growing older, that his health was not that of a young man’s any longer. Though it came as a shock, Death was Death, a natural occurrence in a mortal’s life. The town criers wiped their tears beneath their veils, watching as the grief swept through the people’s faces as they listened to the great life that Cador had led; the good that he had done for his people, and the dying wish that he had made. A young boy with dirt smeared across his face took a heaving breath, rubbing his nose with a tattered, torn sleeve. An aged seamstress clutched at her chest, shaking her head as she rocked back and forth upon her chair, Cador’s name a wail upon her lips. A squire, fresh-faced and wide-eyed, let their sword clatter to the ground as they fell to their knees.
Our Star, they lamented, whether it be upon their lips or in their weeping hearts. Our hope, our leader, and our salvation.
It was as though a silence swept, not only over the people, but over the entirety of the Holy Land. It seemed as though the very earth itself shuddered in trepidation at the onslaught of blood it would have to drink…
It was as though peace had been a curse cast over them, causing them to cease all machinations and to content themselves with idleness and petty games. The great Star of the Tridium had been the sacrifice that was needed to lift the curse from their shoulders, and renew them once more.  The Kingdom of Caelum began preparations for their travels to the Holy Land, the prestigious and glorified of the kingdom readying themselves and their companions for the journey. In the revelry of the Infernal Realm there was pause as news of the fallen Star made its way across the land - the infamous and dastardly figures in the kingdom began to ready themselves for the journey that would undoubtedly follow.
Though no one said it aloud, they all knew. Every creature knew what possibilities loomed over them; what the Hundred-Eyed God likely saw with their never-ending sight. Some fates, they knew, were going to be bloodier than others. The seat of the Star was ripe for the taking. The only question was - who would be the figure standing behind its throne?
Tumblr media
THE FIRST WEEK OF THE NEW MOON: The movements of the wealthy are not kept secret for long. It is well known that only those who sit comfortably upon a mound of money are the only ones that are able to traverse between the kingdoms, and are the only ones expected to participate within the funeral rituals of the great Star, Cador. Where the fat of the calf is, vultures follow, and are not robbers all too content with being compared to such predatory animals? The robbers know it is fair easier to strike angels and demons when their defenses are thinned, spread out like a caravan, making them ripe for the plucking.
The Tridium knows of this, though, and is aware of the dangers of such travel. They are determined to extend the courtesy of safety and protection to those who seek to remember the life of Cador, and so they have requested that volunteers within the Holy Land take up arms to defend their visitors. Among those who have volunteered to do so are:
GROUP I:
LUCA RICHE
CAPHRIEL
ORIAS
GROUP II:
ROMILDA ALTIER
SAMAEL
DMITRI
GROUP III:
ARIANNE ALTIER
RAUM
ZADKIEL
THE SECOND WEEK OF THE NEW MOON:  The preparations for Cador’s funeral have finally come to an end, and the celebrations and rituals begin. The rites span over six days, each day with a specific means for paying Cador’s legacy homage.
The first day is known as the MEMORIAM OF DAWN, in which the community gathers together to build a pyre for the departed, rising at dawn to collect the necessary instruments and resources - wood, flowers, oils, and the like. While they gather and prepare, they sing of the departed’s childhood, and if none can be recounted then they sing of the first time the departed smiled at them, their first laugh, and so on. The second day is known as the MEMORIAM OF THE FIRST TWILIGHT and it is upon this day that the treasures of the departed are gathered together so that they might be redistributed to their loved ones and the community, depending on the wishes of the dead. This typically takes place at the Temple of the Saints and is often accompanied by acts of charity, such as alms-giving and distribution of goods in the name of the departed. The third day is known as the MEMORIAM OF SUNRISE and it is on this day that there is quiet and respite to be taken by the loved ones of the departed. Traditionally, they sequester themselves and allow themselves time to bask in the life that they had shared with the dead - oftentimes gathering together if only to drink, eat, and exchange memories.
The fourth day is known as the MEMORIAM OF SUNSET, during which what can only be described as festivities take place - the last three days of funeral rituals meant to be a joyous celebration of the life that had been lived. A bonfire takes place and those who wish to render the memory of the departed upon their skin, either in letter or through symbols. Laughter, singing, dancing often marks this and typically bleeds into the next. The fifth day is known as the MEMORIAM OF THE LAST TWILIGHT and it is on this day that the last vestiges of the departed are burned. Treasures that no one wishes to keep for themselves, letters that they had written, renderings and sketches - all are burned upon the pyre, along with the body that remains. The lighting of the pyre is rather ceremonious, with a loved one removing the shroud as frankincense curls in the air, placing one final kiss upon the departed’s brow before extending the torch and setting the pyre aflame. Libations, song, and dancing ensue once more and consequently bleed into the sixth and final day, known as the MEMORIAM OF DUSK. When dusk settles on this final day, the ashes from the pyre are collected and are taken care of at the discretion of the departed’s loved ones. Candles are lit throughout the community - placed upon windowsills, balconies, fountains, the old haunts and known places of refuge for the dead. With this closing ceremony, it is recognized that, though the ache still lingers - and perhaps it always will - there is hope that such love will be renewed again
The people of the land - and the visitors from the neighboring kingdoms - gather together to remember the great life that Cador had. Minstrels ready their instruments, children and adults alike gather the wood for the bonfire, and so the celebrations begin and the libations are shared among all. In their drunkenness, there are some who can’t help but notice how odd Cador seems to look on the pyre - it is as though there is a glamour that is placed on his visage. The hues of his skin seem skewed. The way the light shines in his hair gleams rather oddly.
But no matter, no matter… leave the dead to their peace…
THIRD WEEK OF THE NEW MOON: It seems that the entirety of the world has been renewed, that fresh vigor runs deep within the soil. For this reason, it is said that the Daemonium are becoming agitated - for the only renewal they know is that of their insatiable hunger. It is on the outskirts of Sanctus Terra that many hear of it. The Tridium is aware, but they make the decision to stay their hand - they feel themselves becoming overwhelmed while being spread so thin. Those of the Round Table need to reserve their forces and maintain their focus on electing a new Star to represent them and their interests. But there are the restless few who cannot help but take a quick trip to relieve their own hunger - their hunger for glory.
THE FOURTH WEEK OF THE NEW MOON:  Due to the unprecedented events that occurred at the beginning of the New Moon, the celebration known as The Coming of Spring was delayed, and many instead chose to celebrate it during the fourth week of the New Moon. The allocated sites have been announced and the people of the Holy Land are able to let the last vestiges of grief go as the renewal of the spirit takes place. Perhaps some will wish that the new Star be as righteous and glorious as the one that had passed. Perhaps those who hunger for it will get the schism that they want so dearly to occur between the factions.

CONGRATULATIONS, JORDAN! YOU’VE BEEN ACCEPTED FOR THE ROLE OF GADRIEL.
Admin Rosey: Eeeeeee! Jordan you have no idea how much I’m bouncing off the walls because you brought us such an unparalleled Gadriel! I was hoping, with all my heart, that someone would dare to write a character that is full of such unfettered love, and you did it. All the more, you didn’t hold back with the adoration that seems to burrow itself into every single facet of the character. Your para sample was an absolute thrill to read and truly, I couldn’t have asked for someone more capable of delivering the Gadriel we all know and love. Thank you so much for this wonderful application - it had me grinning from ear to ear. Please create and send in your account, review the information on our CHECKLIST, and follow everyone on the FOLLOW LIST. Welcome to the Holy Land!

IN CHARACTER
Character | Gadriel
What drew you to this character? |
Though there were quite a number of characters I considered applying for at various stages, I kept coming back to Gadriel. Within her character is everything I’m familiar with, and yet nothing that I’ve written before. I study (or studied, technically) early modern literature and art history, with a focus on Catholic theology, so I was initially drawn to Gadriel’s background as a martyred saint. I love her grief, I love the way she grows from it while still carrying it with her. I love her fighting for compassion and pacifism, while still being shrouded by the monstrous aspect of her that has always lingered within. Her love is her driving force, and her vision all encompassing, and for the “greater good,” but she is still so selfish. More on this now!
What future plots do you have in mind for the character? |
i. beware of false prophets [. . .] ye shall know them by their fruits
The God she loved was not always a benevolent one, but she loved Him nonetheless, the words of the scripture a familiar glaze on her tongue, weaving its way through the air as it settles around her like a warm blanket. These were the words she lived by, and the words she, in another life, died by. But now these words, and the God who fomented them, are obsolete—ash and dust, they swirl around her still, only a faint echo of their former glory. Now, the residents (those who choose to partake in religion) worship the Hundred-Eyed God—instead of fire and brimstone, this new deity promised everlasting serenity. Gadriel, like most residents of Caelum, doesn’t worship the Hundred-Eyed God, but as God’s most devout and loving follower, she is faced with the difficult task of protecting ISOLDE, the All-Seeing Priestess of the faith. Despite her best efforts, Gadriel finds herself liking the mortal, and where once Gadriel would have seen an idolator, she now sees what could turn into a friend. The relationship, however, is tenuous, and Gadriel is very reluctant to let herself become attached to the girl—it didn’t end so well for the last worshipped figure in Gadriel’s life. But more than that, Isolde feels like a punishment, or rather, like she should be a punishment. Sure, it pains Gadriel to watch new rituals when the old ones sit in her bones and on her tongue, aching to be remembered and repeated, but otherwise, her task is, at times, an enjoyable one. So when will the other shoe drop? I’m very interested in seeing how this relationship will develop, and how ESTIENNE will fit into it. The biography mentions that Gadriel would kill to protect ARAEL, presumably she would do the same for Isolde, if only out of obligation (though personal affection may one day be a reason as well). Whether it be Estienne or someone else, how will Gadriel, generally a pacifist, react if Isolde is threatened?
I also think it’s interesting to consider what would happen, not if Isolde is physically threatened, but if her status is somehow threatened, or if someone, say ORIAS or CASSIEL (though there are many others), challenges Isolde (an extension of the Hundred-Eyed God) as someone/something to be worshipped? Zealotry is comfortable for Gadriel, a familiar armor to lace over her chest as she draws her sword, but it has rusted and worn down, a passion without a purpose, without an outlet. I think Gadriel is far from becoming a zealot for the Hundred-Eyed God, and to be honest, I’m not sure it would ever actually happen. However, I can see this going two ways (not necessarily mutually exclusive, either):
Gadriel develops a love for Isolde similar to the love she felt for God; it would be different, no doubt, but I think part of Gadriel’s worship of God in her mortal life came from, faith yes, but also love and a desire to be loved. Her worship of God was not entirely unselfish, but fervently pious nevertheless. Could Gadriel ever get to the point where she would take up her sword for Isolde, not against imminent danger, but against idolatry? Maybe, maybe not, and if it did, it would be, as I said, much further down the line, and certainly not as strong as the zealotry she exhibited for God, but I do think it’s an important aspect of Gadriel that cannot just be shirked because her God is dead.
Regardless of Isolde and how Gadriel may feel about her, there is still a part of Gadriel, no matter how slowly waning it may be, that fought tooth and nail to worship her God, both as a human and angel. And now, with people cropping up, Orias, Cassiel, Michael, etc. who try to fill that void He left, to be worshipped in their own right, I’m interested in how Gadriel will react. Obviously, Gadriel is not omnipotent, and therefore doesn’t necessarily know the extent to which these various figures have designs on power, on reverence. But throughout the course of the roleplay, I think as their actions reflect their intentions, and as those intentions become clearer, the familiar feeling of zealotry will crop up again, burning inside Gadriel’s bosom as it once had. Perhaps something starts it, perhaps she will see the corruption of mortals, of her fellow angels, even, and she wants to stop it. It’s not something she could do alone, at least not successfully, and depending on where Gadriel is in her development, she might not even care at first. But I still think it would be interesting to explore, and which unlikely alliances she may form to quell the rising of a new, different, idol.
ii. should intermitted vengeance arm again / His red right hand to plague us?
For every cloud, there is a silver lining, and for every slain deity, a world to be made anew. I don’t think Gadriel has ever been motivated by power, and I don’t think she is now, either. I do think, however, that she believes in a very strong vision of the world, a vision she believed she shared with her God. Of course, without God, Gadriel now has the freedom to reshape her vision, and mold the world into, as the biography states,  “her own vision of beauty.” But that which is beautiful, is also terrible, for beauty without power is vulnerability, a quality Gadriel has shedded like a skin too tight and too itchy to ever be comfortable again. There is an anger inside her, a feeling of righteousness against those she believes have acted unjustly. Namely, MICHAEL and CASSIEL. There are many people she blames for this war, for the death of her beloved God, and Michael’s name is at the top of the list. He clipped her wings, he punished her for her pride (for is hubris not the most base of the tragic flaws?), smearing her face in the dirt of her own folly by naming her the Virtue of Temperance, forcing her to protect a being instrumental to the worship of a new, unfamiliar religion. And still, Gadriel turns the other cheek. To wage outright war against Michael would be foolish, and though Gadriel is privy to foolishness (a lingering effect of her not-so-long-forgotten mortality), she isn’t that foolish. I think the dynamic between Gadriel and Michael is very interesting, and something I’d love to explore. As he hungers for more power, as Gadriel’s resentment of him festers, infecting her life’s blood with boiling wrath, when will Gadriel decide that enough is enough. And who will stand with her?
Now onto Cassiel. Cassiel’s betrayal of the Cherubim, of Gadriel and her own people (though really, with Gadriel’s part in the war against Michael, I think Gadriel would be put on trial regardless), is another interesting avenue to explore. I mentioned Cassiel above as being a sort of “False Prophet,” and in truth, I think she is the antithesis to Gadriel. Speaking of Cherubim, I think Gadriel and ZADKIEL would actually get along fairly well, as Gadriel is (or at least was) well-liked by her fellow angels, and liked them in return, and I think they have a similar philosophy and moral compass. Would Gadriel and Zadkiel, two angels affected by Cassiel’s actions, end up lighting the spark of retribution against Cassiel? Or will it divide them? Cassiel and Gadriel are two people driven by the notion of beauty, though their definitions couldn’t be further apart. While Cassiel’s vision is of herself, Gadriel sees an eternal peace, filial piety and the burning passion of people who join in communion as one (so really, the concept of the Hundred-Eyed God should be alluring to her, once Gadriel realizes that it aligns with her vision and she could wield it considering Isolde is her charge—I digress). Perhaps Gadriel goes against Cassiel, not necessarily for past indiscretions, but present grievances.
To create, you must destroy, and from the ashes of the old world will Gadriel’s vision of beauty rise, sheathed in gold with a purity so simple, it can only be considered divine.
iii. when is a monster not a monster?
The answer, of course, “when you love it.” Gadriel’s connections to Asmodeus, Arael, and Mammon are all thematically concerned with when Gadriel shows her monstrous side, if at all. With ARAEL, Gadriel’s monstrous side is not hidden, because with their level of intimacy, with its purity, Gadriel holds no secrets from Arael. It just rarely (if ever) rears its ugly head. The biography mentions that Gadriel would kill for Arael, and I would like to put that to the test. I don’t know how, or when, but I want Gadriel to become a monster, all for the sake of Arael. She knows of Arael’s grief, but I’m wondering just how much Gadriel knows of Arael’s visits to ABBADON’S domain. If she doesn’t know, then perhaps Gadriel will feel betrayed. Of course, she wouldn’t take it out on Arael, there is very little Arael could do to warrant that sort of emotion from Gadriel, but I do think it would shift their relationship. If Gadriel does know, however, I wonder if Gadriel might try to take it upon herself to help Arael (if it’s unwanted, so much the better), because Gadriel is the picture of self-righteousness.
ASMODEUS is an interesting case with regard to Gadriel’s monstrous side. She hasn’t quite figured him out, she doesn’t know his sad past, but the glances they share, the stares that betray his longing for something else, someone else, intrigue her. And I think it makes Gadriel feel powerful, this unsaid tension between them, the notion that at any moment, it could all crumble and collapse, that he could, if she so chose. I think she wants to poke and prod at him, maybe from afar at first, and then toy with him, his vulnerability between her teeth, with only gravity (the gravity she is so adept at manipulating) to crush it, or release him from her grasp. Of course, Gadriel is not without compassion, and maybe once she knows Asmodeus’ story, she’ll feel differently. It all depends on what part of Asmodeus she chooses to see: the human, or the demon.
Gadriel’s most monstrous side, her most vindictive and self-righteous, self-satisfying, parts, are shown in her relationship with MAMMON. She spared them, not because she felt pity, not because she cared, or didn’t wish to shed blood, but to show them that she could. She held their life at the end of her blade and laughed when she removed it from his throat. Surely they still harbor bitter feelings towards her, feelings of hatred and resentment, even. In Emma’s app for Mammon, she mentions how she envisions them fighting, even to the death. I fully agree, and am looking forward to their confrontation a lot. Gadriel is, generally, soft, but I want to explore those parts of her that are more monster than divine, more human than angel.
Are you comfortable with killing off your character? | Yes.
IN DEPTH
Driving Character Motivation |
In Gadriel’s mortal life, her driving motivation was her love for God, and her desire to be loved by God. The picture of piety, Gadriel shirked near all else to proclaim her love for God, frustrated when others wouldn’t recognize His great power, his all-encompassing love. Even when she became an angel, she was still driven by this love, but now it was realized, it was reciprocated. And rather than have that be diminished upon conquest, it only grew stronger and more fervent.
Of course, after the war, after her wings were clipped, Gadriel turned into the dutiful angel, obeying Michael’s orders (much to her chagrin). Now she’s driven by her vision of beauty, of peace everlasting and passion overflowing. Love is still very much part of the equation, and the love she feels for Arael, for Isolde (maybe, eventually), also motivates her. But it’s her love for God, and for his vision, that stoke the fire of ambition in her loins. I think Gadriel is tired of constantly being taken for granted, being walked all over, and is using the new world as an opportunity to turn a page in her own life. To become all that she once sought to, to fulfill all righteousness on earth, and to spread her vision to all those who will listen.
Character Traits |

(dogmatic, vengeful, obstinate)
In-Character Para Sample |
“Brothers, sisters, friends, lend me your ears,” she began, standing in front of her fellow angels, on trial for crimes committed against Michael, committed for God. “I stand on trial today, though I believe myself innocent of all crimes, guilty only of being consumed by love. Perhaps my love was misplaced, my loyalty misguided, but is that so unreasonable? Was that not God’s almighty power—to stir inside those who are lost the guidance to follow His will through His love?” She looked around, eyes imploring as she clutched her chest. The room was bright, the sun almost overbearing and artificial, devoid of everything Heaven held, a false divinity imbuing every corner and crevice. She had been here before. But rather than in a spotless room, she was surrounded by dust and the jeers of Romans who believed her guilty of the same crime she was accused of now: treason.
“You accuse me of treason,” she began again, and the lion’s roar in her ear was so loud, she felt as though it was standing across the room from her, not Michael, “but forgive me, I knew nothing else. If my actions offended, let us rectify the situation, together. Let us venture forth, hand in hand, brothers in arms, angels enshrouded in the divinity that is our right, into this new era. But let us not paint this era with more blood than has already been shed; for is that truly what you want your legacy to entail? Fire and brimstone—would you be any better than the God you have deposed?” She raised her eyebrow, scanning the eyes of the crowd as they shifted uncomfortably. An invisible string lifted Gadriel’s spine—perhaps it was her power of gravity, perhaps newfound confidence at the uncomfortability of the angels who wished her dead.
“And how, dear sister, could we trust you?” Michael asked, unmoved, the pinnacle of strength and composure.
“This is new territory for both of us, brother. This world has never known God’s absence—but together, and only together, could we bring it into a new Golden Age, an era of rebirth and plenty.” Everyone was silent, pondering her words. This silence was deafening, and the lion roared louder. Her heart began to race as she saw the saliva glint off the lion’s teeth, the blood staining its fur from the last human he shred.
“You seek to do better than God? Well do better. Ff His picture of compassion was imperfect, perfect it. His vision of mercy unfulfilled, fulfill it.” The words stung her tongue as she spoke them against her God, but perhaps she could give Michael and his legions the chance to be better, if that is what they truly sought. “Violence, retribution. This is not the way, and we both know it.”
Silence still more. Until finally, Michael made his decision.
“Very well, you have your amnesty. But Gadriel, this can not go unpunished.” He contemplated further, his hands steepled like a church she once worshipped at, before continuing, “your wings will be clipped, and we will watch you. Very closely.” He nodded, but she could tell this wasn’t his desired outcome.
“Thank you, Michael, for your compassion. You won’t regret it,” she said through gritted teeth, sharp as a lion’s, before she sheathed them. Not now. Not today. Today, she lived, and she will continue to do so, if only to continue God’s work. For so it become us to fulfill all righteousness.
Extras |
i. COMPANION: By her side, Gadriel’s companion is a LION. I’m hearkening back to the typological tradition of depicting a martyred saint with the instruments of their demise. St. Lawrence has his grill, St. Catherine of Alexandria her spiked wheel, and so Gadriel will have her lion.
ii. WINGS: Gadriel’s wings are clipped, but not torn from her back. Right now they don’t extend past her shoulder blades, but at once they were the most radiant, pure, white of the softest down. When they grow back, however, perhaps they will be muddled and murky.

Misfits Chapter One | First Draft | Sneak Peek
I have since rewritten this entire chapter with major changes to settings, plot and characters (Like Oria having two Mothers instead of a Mom and a Dad). The writing is god awful. I don’t think I ever did a single edit, just spell checked here and there. That being said, I hope it piques your interest and gets you excited for the final draft!
The last bell chimed signaling the end of another school day.
Oria was never one to beat around the bush. When she was no longer interested with someone she would dump them there and then. She felt it was for the best. She disliked leading people on. Still she wished her exboyfriend didn’t look at her so mopey as his bus drove by. It was too awkward for her to handle.
She sighed and shifted her tote bag on her shoulder as it began to nip at her skin. Todays workload was especially heavy. She had been getting behind lately, having more depressive outburst than usual now that her mothers cancer was getting worse. The Doctors said chemo just wouldn’t work anymore and had given her one year to live.
Only just turned 17 Oria wondered how she would live her life. Her mother was the only family she had left. How would she afford college? Would she even go? Nothing interested her lately. She had even quit her ballet classes. She just didn’t have the energy for a relationship right now. Especially not with someone so needy.
The Chapel bell rang signalling the beginning of a new hour and she could hear tennis team practicing as she exited the premises.
Deciding she wanted to go for a longer walk before she got home she cut across the graveyard and into the park. She could hear the school choir practicing in the church at the top of the hill. As she passed by the underside of a rock ledge at the bottom of it she could suddenly hear skuffling from underground. Writing it off as an animal she continued walking until suddenly she could swear she could hear voices.
She turned back pressed her ear to the ground. She knew she was right when she heard muffled mumbling.
"Hello?“ she called and the voices fell silent, "Hello? Is someone down there? Should I get help?”
"Hello!“ A womans voice called. It was quite thick with accent. She almost sounded scottish, though there was a distinct difference she couldn’t put her finger on.
"Don’t worry we’re quite alright but could you be a dearie and help us move this rock out the way?”
"What?“ Oria questioned, "Isn’t that a little dangerous?”
"Ah no, don’t worry my sweet, I’m a proffesional! But it would go a little faster if we had a bit of help from your end!“
Oria pondered what she would do for a moment before she replied.
              "Which one?”
About a metre away from her a rock about the height of her midriff. She started away on the smaller rocks around it that were helping to hold it in place.
"Try now!“ she said when the larger rock was free.
She watched it jiggle and could hear them huffing as they struggled underground. She joined in and pushed it from the side slowly it wedged free and she could see the light of a lantern peeking through the small crack. All at once it gave way and rolled to the side.
Oria fell forward into unexpected arms. All she could see was red hair and pale skin. She looked up and saw that she had been caught by a very beautiful girl donning a dirty safety helmet with a light attached to the front. Her face was covered in dirt and soot but all she could really focus on were her eyes. They were green.
"You’re a dream!” she exclaimed and as she helped her upright she continued, “We could have been here for hours if it weren’t for you!”
Oria nodded shyly as she looked around and saw two burly men with pick axes and other tools she did not recognize.
"So tell us lass,“ one of them piped up, "What world are we in?”
Oria blinked, “Pardon?” she said as she got a better look at them and her eyes widened in terror.
She screamed as she threw herself back against the rock bed. Before her stood not men but monsters. One a lizard that stood on it’s hind legs and the other with a snout that was long like a dog and ears that pointed up like and elf.
"Miss are you alright?“ the lizard man piped up.
The girl and the other monster looked a bit surprised at her outburst.
"What, What are you!?” Oria exclaimed.
"What are you going on about miss?“ the girl asked.
Oria collected herself a little bit, "They… they aren’t human?”
The girl blinked then slapped her knee and laughed.
"Well of course they aren’t. Don’t worry, they may be ugly but they’re harmless.“
One of them slapped her hard in the back knocking the breath out out of her.
"Ughh! Jules,” She said to him,“ This must be an old world!”
"I was thinking the same thing,“ the pointy eared one responded.
The girl extended her hand to Oria and smiled.
"We have a lot to talk about.”
Oria hesitated for a moment before taking the girls hand and she helped her to her feet.
"Now don’t worry about old Jules over here, his bark is worse than his bite.“
Oria jumped as Jules growled in response.
"And this is Gaige,” she said pointing to the lizard man, “and I’m Eska,” she said taking Oria’s hand and shaking it once.
"Now tell us,“ Jules piped up, "What world girl?”
"… Earth?“ she said as a question rather than a statement.
              "Earth!” the Eska exclaimed.
"We haven’t had contact with this world in at least 100 years!“ Gaige exclaimed.
Oria shook her head.
"I’m a little lost,” she said and a little overwhelmed she thought.
"You can come with us and we’ll explain everything,“ Jules said, "But first, if this is an old world we’ve got to set this cloaker.
He pulled a fist sized metal sphere out from a tool box and handed it to Eska. She set to work climbing up the 6 foot hole that Oria had fallen down.
"Wait a minute! What are you doing?” Oria panicked.
"Don’t worry,“ Gaige said, "You can get back through from this side but once you’re through you can’t get back in.”
Eska set the sphere at the top of the ledge and twisted the top. A translucent barrier appeared overtop of them.
"It’s a type of camouflage,“ he countinued, "From the other side it will just look like another rock.”
"Now,“ Jules said, "You can come with us or go back, it’s your choice.”
              "Where are we going?“
              "To the portal world.”
              "The what?“
"You’ll see when you get there,” Gaige said as they began packing up their things, swinging sacks and bags over their backs and holding tools and boxes in their hands.
"You can go back any time you want,“ he said sensing her heistation.
Suddenly she was overtaken by curiosity and wonder. She looked back once and wondered what she was getting herself into.
"Just give me a moment,” she said pulling out her phone and began texting.
'Mom, staying at a friends house tonight, will be home tomorrow after school.’
She paused for a moment before hitting send. She nodded and followed them down the dark cavern. The oil lamp being the only thing that lit their way.
"What is a portal world?“ Oria asked after a moment of silence.
"Not a portal world, the portal world,” Jules corrected her.
"It’s where all the individual worlds meet up,“ Gaige explained.
"How many worlds are there?” Oria asked.
"More than we know of,“ he answered, "Right now we have contact with 30. There may have been a time when there were more.”
"So which world are you from?“
"I’m from Ophidian and Jules is form Andreiex.”
"And you?“ Oria asked Eska, "Are you from Earth?”
              "Apparently so.“
              "Apparently?”
"Our ancestors came here so long ago we were never really sure until we came in contact with your world a while back.“
              "100 years ago?”
              "Right.“
"If that happened so long ago why doesn’t anyone know about this portal world?”
Gaige answered, “Well you see, apparently there was trouble with that world at the time so they collapsed the portal to avoid it.”
Oria thought back to 100 years ago. That would make it 1915.
"It must have been World War I,“ she exclaimed.
              "World War I?” Gaige asked.
"Yeah, it’s a kind of War that includes some of the most powerful countries from around the world.“
              "That sounds devastating.”
"It was,“ she answered, "So then will we be going to the portal you collapsed then?”
"No this is a different one. Sometimes there is more than one for each world,“ Gaige answered.
"So when will we reach the one we are going to?”
"This is it sweetheart,“ Jules piped up.
"This cavern,”  Eska replied leads straight to portal world.
              "I don’t understand,“ Oria replied.
"No one really does,” Gaige explained, “It defies all lawas of physics but, here we are.”
They walked for a good half hour. Along the way they explained to Oria where they were going and answered her when she questioned them. Finally they came to the end of the cavern and Oria was amazed at what she saw then.
It was an underground city. Buildings upon buildings streching out almost as far as the eye could see. Along the edges were ledges as tall as skyscrapers with houses and shops scattered along them. The could almost not see the roof of this enormous cavern but she knew it was there.
"Welcome to the portal world,“ Eska chimed.
              "This is amazing,” Oria breathed.
Amazing that the answer to the question ‘Are we alone in the universe?’ had not been in the sky, but in the ground all along.
They walked down a steep hill and into the market place below. All sorts of creatures stood behind and in front of the stalls doing business with each other. Every once in a while she spotted a human or something similar but they were few and far inbetween.
"Where are we going?“ Oria asked.
"To the Boss,” Jules answered, “We have to report that we’ve connected to an old world.”
"What do you mean by old world?“ Oria asked.
"It means a world that we’ve been disconnected from for so long that we had forgotten it existed,” Gaige answered, “Until we connected with Earth 100 years ago, we didn’t even realize that it was there.”
They continued through the marketplace until they got to a slightly larger building with two stories. The front entrance was pretty busy and they headed to the back and went through a side door.
Inside was a locker room and the three of them went to put their things away. They all grabbed a change of clothes and headed to a separate room. Gaige stopped to talk to Oria before he went in.
“Humans and entfolk stink up pretty easy with their sweat gands and all, so they’ll be out after they wash up. I’ll be out in a minute lass and then we can go report to the boss.”
Oria nodded and he left. She leaned against the wall and waited until he came back.
They headed toward the back wall and up a dark and dirty narrow staircase. They came out to a long narrow hallway with lots of doors and walked to the one at the end of the hallway. Gaige knocked.
"Come in,“ a low voice called.
Gaige opened the door and behind it was an actual person. Red hair the same shade as Eska’s and a stern look. He gave Oria one look ap and down and turned to Gaige.
              "What’s the story?” he questioned.
"We completed the tunnel today. Seems we’ve found an old world.“
"I suppose this is where she came from?” He asked pointing his pencil at Oria.
              "That’s right.
The man sighed.
"We can put her through customs later,“ he said getting up, "So you’re from an old world eh?” he addressed Oria as he walked over to her, “Name’s Aengus,” he said reaching out a hand.
Timidly Oria shook his.
"I keep things in order around here and I’m the Uncle of that great big oaf you met earlier.“
"EH! Who you callin’ an oaf!” Eska yelled from downstairs.
Aengus laughed a great hardy laugh.
"Walls are thin around here,“ he winked at her.
Suddenly he didn’t seem so intimidating anymore.
"So lass, tell me, are you from Earth?”
Oria nodded.
              "Yes.“
"Ah, well that’s exciting. Tell me, have things calmed down there a bit?”
"Well, we still have wars,“ Oria started.
              "Mhmm.”
"But the big one from before is over.“
"Ah! Well that’s great news! Gaige, go get that oaf of a neice of mine!”
              "Sure sir.“
Aengus moved back around his desk and gestured to the chair in front.
              "Take a seat dear.”
Oria did as she was told.
"So customs isn’t anything you really need to do but just to be safe you should head on over there after this. Just in case there are any accidents while you are here you won’t be held accountable. Also, in case anything happens to you you’ll actually be in the system so no one will be able to just write you off.“
"After all that’s done though I think you should head over to a friend of mines place. He’s one of the few still around that came here the last time we had access to your world. His name’s Abhi Rana.”
"Um, sorry,“ Oria interupted, "What do you mean he came here then?”
              "Sorry lass?“
"Well, that was 100 years ago, shouldn’t he be dead by now?”
"Ah that’s right! The life expectancy on your planet is pretty low isn’t it?“
Oria cocked her head to the side in question.
"Modern medicine my dear. The average life span for humans in this world is 400 years.”
Oria’s mouth fell open.
              "You’re- You’re joking?“
              "Sure ain’t.”
              "So how old are you?“
"79 but I don’t look a day over 60 don’t you think?” he asked winking.
He didn’t look a day over 40 was more like it.
Oria’s mind went blank and then all at once swarmed mith one thought, 'Mother.’
              "Cancer!“ Oria shouted rising up.
Aengus was taken aback by her sudden outburst.
              "Can you cure cancer?”
              "Yes…?“
Oria paused for a moment and slunk back into her seat. Suddenly she felt so overwhelmed. She buried her face in her hands and began crying in relief.
"What’s this?” Eska asked as she entered the room.
"Why’s it seem you’re always making the pretty girls cry Uncle?“
Aengus put his hands up in the air.
              "I don’t know what I said?”
Eska knelt down beside Oria’s chair.
"What’s the matter my darling? Did he say something funny to you? I know his face is quite a horror to look upon but there’s no need to cry.“
Oria couldn’t help bet let a laugh escape from her lips.
              "I’m- I’m sorry,” she began, “It’s just that, I’m so-so ha-happy.”
Eska and Aengus both gave each other confused looks.
Oria lifted her head up and repetitively wiped the tears out of her eyes and off her face with her palms, sleeves and fingers. She took a deep breath to help calm herself and another before she began to explain.
"My mother, could I get her down here? She’s very ill. She has c-cancer. The Doctors say she only has a year to live,“ she stated her voice getting weepy again as she finished her sentence.
Suddenly the tone of the room changed.
"Ah I’m sorry lass but the cloakers are controlled by the head world,” Aengus began, “No one can get through to this side until they’ve approved that the world is safe and with Earth’s track record…” He drifted off.
"What?“ Oria asked fearfully, "How long is it going to take?”
"Could be years,“ Eska piped up, "Maybe decades.”
"What?“ Oria repeated in quiet defeat and disbelief.
Eska and Aengus both gave her pitiful looks which set her off again.
"No, there has to be some way, some loop hole. I just want to bring one person through! Isn’t there anything I can do!? Somebody I can talk to?”
Aengus sighed, “You could appeal to the head world but it’s going to take some time and you’re going to have to play politics.”
Oria nodded, “I can do anything, I just need to know where to start.”
"Exactly where I said before. Go to customs, get registered. Meet with Abhi. He has more experience with this kind of thing. He’ll know how to help you.“
              "Where is customs?” Oria asked.
"I’ll take you there,“ Eska replied.
She stood up and threw her bag over her shoulder.
"I’ll take you to Abhi’s too. We’ll have to go through the Abranatrix wastelands. You shouldn’t go through there without an escort.”
Oria nodded.
              "Okay.“
"We’ll be off then, unless there’s something else you need?” she asked Aengus.
He waved his hand shooing them out the door.
"No that’s it, take the rest of the day off.“
As Oria stood up she fixed her school tie and brushed through her hair with her fingers and pulled it all over one shoulder.
"Let’s go then,” she said to Eska and walked out the door.
They exited the premises through the employee exit at the back.
"It’ll be faster to cut through here,“ Eska said as they headed through a back alley.
As they walked something reflective caught Oria’s eye. She realized that Eska had a sword hanging from one side of her belt and a hand gun, unlike one she had ever seen before, hanging from the other.
This place just kept getting stranger and stranger as time went on.
After weaving their way through a few more alleys they made their way back the the busy streets. At times Oria had to run to keep up to Eska as the crowd continually insisted on seperating them.
After a few minutes they made their way to a building that was even larger than the one they had just been in. It was in a bit better condition than all the rusty and run down one’s that it shared the street with as well.
They entered this time through the main doors. They walked up to the front desk which was attended by a large woman with four arms who’s skin looke like it was made of rock.
"Hi, I’m here to get someone registered,” Eska stated.
The woman looked through her desk with utmost efficiency and pulled some papers out from a file and stapled them together.
"Take this, fill it out and wait for your number to be called.“
Eska handed the papers to Oria and they walked over to a desk in the middle of the room. Oria took a pen and filled out her information. Her name, why she was here, where she was from, that sort of thing. Then they took a seat along the wall. While they waited they spoke.
"So,” Oria began, “Finding portals is your job?”
"Only sometimes,“ Eska replied, "I’m only helping Uncle Aengus out because someone quit on the spot a few weeks back. Usually travel through worlds doing small mercenary jobs.”
Oria swallowed.
              "Like what?“
Eska laughed.
"Nothing too horrible. Beating off bandits, kill the odd monster, escort pretty ladies,” She winked at Oria, “That’s my favourite part of the job.”
Oria laughed in responce.
              "Sounds exciting.“
"It can be. What about you?”
Oria shook her head.
"Nothing too interesting. I’m going to school right now and I work part time at a resteraunt.“
"Is that right? Most people around here don’t stay in school past age 13.”
"Really? How do you find work?“
"You don’t need an education to work.”
"Where I come from it’s mandatory to stay in school till we’re 18. Most people stay in school even longer so they can get good jobs.“
              "Strange.”
"Yeah I guess. This is my school uniform actually,“ Oria said smoothing down her skirt, "I don’t actually dress like this.”
"It’s not a bad look for you,“ Eska chimed.
Oria laughed.
              "Thanks.
A screechy voice called Oria’s number from a desk at the far corer of the room. They walked over and a strange looking bird man skimmed all the papers before signing off on all of them and stamping the top of each page.
"I’ll need a witness,” he croacked.
              "Sure,“ Eska said stepping up.
              "Name?”
              "Eska Ciar.“
He scribbled it down.
              "Middle name?”
              "Ailios"
He pushed the papers towards her.
"Just sign on the dotted line.“
Eska took the pen from him an quickly signed with an X.
Oria realized that Eska probably couldn’t read.
"I’ll need a finger print he said taking out some ink and reaching out for her hand.’
Oria placed her hand in his outstreched feathered palm and he dipped her thumb into the ink and then rolled it beside her name on the last page and then on a small surface that resembled a photocopier. It disapeared in a moment.
"Take these  and go to the next room for your picture please,” he said handing her the papers
She did as she was told and she could hear him calling out the next number as Eska followed behind.
In the next room a human woman typed her information into a small machine then put the papers in a folder and then added it to a filing cabinet at the back of the room.
After she took her picture a small photo ID printed out with all her information and and her finger print.
"Keep this on your person at all times for the next two weeks. That’s how long it will take for your information to get processed.
As they left Oria looked at the card in disdain. She usually wasn’t very fond of how she looked in ID photos but after the events of the day she looked extremely dishelved and ugly.
She sighed and guessed she’d just have to get over it.
"Now we’ll have to take the tram,“ she said, "Oh look, there it is… Come on!” She said breaking out into a run.
Oria followed close behind her and they hopped aboard just as the last bell tolled. Eska dropped two bronze coins into the fare box and they went to sit at the back of the bus.
Eska watched as Oria stared out the window. So many amazing sights, sounds and smells. So many things that she had never experienced before. It was all a little tiring and she felt her amazment beginning to wane. After a good half hour she nodded off.
She woke to Eska shaking her lightly. She sat up with a gasp when she realized she had been leaning on her shoulder.
              "Sorry,“ she breathed.
"Don’t worry about it,” Eska smiled.
Eska pulled the cord and a low ding sounded out. Both girls stood up and moved to the back exit as the tram slowed down and finally stopped at the next corner.
Both of them exited and Eska led Oria away from the town and towards one of the far sides of the giant cavern.
"Where are we going exactly?“ Oria asked.
Eska stopped and turned around.
"We’re going to that nice part of town over there,” Eska said pointing towards part of the city on one of the tallest ledges all the way across on the other side of the cavern.
Oria did a double take.
"Aren’t we going the wrong way?“
"You’ll see when we get there,” Eska explained.
As they neared the rock wall Oria noticed the opening to another cave.
"Is this another portal?“ Oria asked.
              "Yep.”
Eska pulled a flashlight out of her bag and placed her palm on the hilt of her sword before they entered the tunnel. Oria kept pace with Eska as they walked and a one point she got a few steps ahead.
              "Stay behind me,“ Eska said.
Oria turned to Eska and blinked perplexed but obeyed.
After a good fifteen minute walk the ground began to get moist and soon they were trecking through mud. Eska was fine as she was wearing knee high boots. Oria however soon realized that her flats were not going to be sufficient for this trip.
Soon the water was up to their ankles and Oria stopped to removed her shoes completely and put her socks in her bag. She carried her shoes in her hand though, not wanting to get the contents of her bag dirty as well.
"This is going to get a little messy,” Eska said apologetically.
They continued for a few more minutes. Finally Oria could make out a few things as they neared the end. When they finally stepped outside into a swampy jungle the water reached up to their calves.
Oria’s watch told her that it was past midnight but in this world it was either dawn or twilight. Eska put her flashlight back into her bag.
"This way,“ she said pointing out into the jungle, "Stay close.”
They ventured out into the trees, stepping over roots and around vines. Every once in a while they could hear an animals scurrying away at the sound of their approach.
The air was hot and humid and Oria could feel the sweat soaking through her shirt. Her breath felt heavy and she did not notice that Eska had stopped till she had almost bumped into her.
              "What is it?“
              "Shh.”
They listened for a while and suddenly Oria could hear footsteps behind them. They both turned at the same time and Eska grabbed her waist pulling her behind her. A pair of yellow eyes peered out from the trees.
A great white animal jumped out at them. It had the body of a bear but the face of a feline and six legs. Two that it held out in front of itself like pincers which it used to swipe at them in an effort to grab.
Eska jumped back grabbing the shoulder of Oria’s coat and taking her along. She threw Oria behind her a bit more roughly that she had before. The monstrosity raced towards them as she drew her sword from it’s sheath.
Eska took a good swing at it’s head but it ripped the sword from her hand with it’s pincers. Both girls dive out of the way as it rips away at the ground they were standing on moments before, with it’s long sharp teeth.
Eska takes her gun from her belt and shoots. A loud bang emits from it and the creature is blown from it’s feet and topples onto it’s back yet Oria saw no blood. It scrambles up as Eska runs for her sword. She wriggles it free from it’s hold in a tree stump as the monster it gains on her. Oria throws one shoe and then another when she thinks that it will get to her companion before she can even turn back around. They bounce off of it like nothing. Just as it is about swipe at her with one of it’s clawed paws, Eska swings her sword upwards and cuts the skin along it’s jaw.
It floped back in pain and Eska uses this time to run to Oria. She grabs her arm and they run from the clearing while it is distracted.
They stop when they are sure it isn’t following them anymore. Eska leaned against a tree and Oria placed her hands on her knees and panted.
"What was that thing?“ she breathed.
"A Carctosur. That’s why you need an escort my dear.”
Eska used some wild fauna to wipe the blood from her sword before placing it back in it’s sheath.
"Let’s go. I want to be out of here before it gets dark.“
They continue through the jungle and soon they get to the edge of the swap. There they come to a slight hill. They climb up it until they get to a rock face. There they find another tunnel.
After another half hour they enter the city again. They walk out to the edge and see all the people and other beings down below. They look like ants as the go about their day.
"See, that’s where we used to be,” Eska said pointing down to a shabby part of town.
Oria looked and quickly regretted it. The height they were at made her a little dizzy and she stepped away from the edge.
Eska looked down at Oria’s feet.
              "Where are your shoes?“
”… I threw them at the monster.“
Eska slapped her knee and laughed.
"Well I’ll have to get you a new pair.”
They walked down the road and Oria felt like she was in a completely different city. While the lower part of the city was dirty and down trodden, this part was clean, pristine and well kept. The houses were huge and upscale looking. Children in lavish clothes played on their front lawns; how grass even grew without the sun, she did not know.
As they moved further into the neighborhood the houses got bigger and pricier looking. Finally they made their way to a steep hill and began to climb. At the top stood a lone mansion beautiful in it’s design.
"Is that where we are going?“
Eska nodded.
When they arrived Eska rang the doorbell and a  maid welcomed them in.
"Good evening Mistress Eska,” she greeted her.
              "Evening Brae.“
"Please, this way,” she said eyeing Oria’s dirty feet.
She felt so embarressed. Eska noticed and kicked off her boots too before following the maid down the hall in her socked feet.
Brae led them to the receiving room.
"Please make yourselves comfortable,“ she said bowing before leaving the room.
Two couches sat facing each other beside the hearth. A rug lay under a coffee table that separated them. Oria was careful not to step on it with her dirty feet as she sat down on one of the couches.
Eska roamed around the room and stopped in front of a mirror to check herself out and fix a tuft of hair that had go awry.
After a few minutes they were joined by a girl with dark skin and sleek black hair taut up in a bun. Her face was stern and her clothes matched the fact. She wore ruby reds and darks purples. Her shirt was close fitting and looked very stiff with it’s boned bodice.  The neck rose high and ended in a wide wide cape type collar that dropped off her shoulders. The bustle on the back of her skirt elongated the train that flowed behind her as she walked.
Oria stood up and smiled politely.
"Eska,” this beautiful and ornate girl began, “Why does it seem that you always come to my house in the middle of the night?” her thin pursed lips pulled up into a smile.
"You know I can’t help myself,“ Eska flirted back.
The girl eyed Oria up and down with interest.
              "I see you’ve brought a friend.”
"Yeah, this is Oria,“ Eska said gesturing to her, "Oria this is Isbeil.”
"Nice to meet you,“ Oria said quietly.
              "Pleasure,” Isbeil replied.
"You’ll never guess where I met her,“ Eska piped up.
"The same place you meet all the others I suppose?” Isbeil quipped.
Oria blushed bright red.
"Lets keep things above the belt sweetheart.“
Isbeil rolled her eyes playfully.
"So where is it that you two met then?”
Eska paused for dramatic effect.
              "Earth.“
Isbeil’s eyes widened.
              "You’re joking?”
              "No word of a lie.
Isbeil gapped.
"That’s amazing! Wait, let me wake grandfather, he’ll be extremely angry if I wait till morning to tell him of this!“
She left with a swish of her skirt. Oria could hear her heals tapping as she walked quickly down the halls and up the stairs.
She returned minutes later with an elderly man with skin slightly darker than her own and hair that was grey and wiry. He wore a dark red silk robe and monocle on his right eye.
"Oh my lord,” he breathed, his voice thick with accent different than the humans she’d met here so far.
"My dear,“ he said moving towards Oria and taking her hands, "You must tell me everything!”
They both sat down on on one couch and Isbeil and Eska took a seat on the other. Isbeil was very prim and proper. Her posture was straight and she laced both hands together on her lap. Eska threw one arm over the back of the couch and rested her right ankle on top of her knee.
"You must be Mr. Rana,“ Oria inclined, the man hadn’t let go of her hands yet.
"Please my dear, cal me Abhi.”
"Now tell me, how exactly did you get here?“
Oria recounted the tale of her walking home and hearing Eska and the boys working and how she had helped them through.
"Marvelous! Absolutely marvelous. Where on Earth has the portal let out then?” he questioned with enthusiasm.
"Canada,“ Oria replied, "Southern Ontario, near Toronto.”
"Ah, that’s a portal I’m not familiar with.“
"Is there more than one?” Oria inquired.
"There is one other in Scotland. It is the one I came through.“
"It’s the one we all came through apparently,” Eska piped up.
"Yes, this is true,“ Abhi replied, "Originally all humans in the portal world can be traced back there through their history. There alphabet is strikingly similar to ancient celtic pictograms and their gods and goddesses are very similar as well.”
"Wow,“ Oria breathed, "To think of all this history that so many people aren’t even aware of…”
Abhi squeazed Oria’s hands and grinned.
"I was just as overwhelmed with wonder when I came here so long ago child.“
He stood.
"Come child, let me show you my study.”
They followed him through the mansion. Large paintings and portraits hung along the long grand hallways. Oria spotted Abhi and Isbeil amongs them. Beside Abhi’s was one of a woman of the same species as Jules, the man she had met before. However her snout was much less pronounced and her ears hung to the side rather than sticking straight up. There was another of a couple. The man, freckled and very dapper, with red hair. The woman had skin slighly darker than Isbeil’s. She looked human, save for her ears, which were long and pointy. Were they her parents?
As Isbeil tucked a strand of loose hair behind her ear Oria noticed that there was a slight point to them too. Unoticeable unless you were looking for it.
Finally they reached their desitnation and Abhi held the door open for the girls. Oria entered and was amazed. It was less of a study and more of a small library. He lead them through this room and into the next which was even larger. It had a dome shaped ceiling and small bits of metal lined the walls.
He flipped a switch and as projections lit up the ceiling, Oria realized this was a planetarium. Not only did things appear on the seilng but holograms of galaxies and stars showed up along around them portraying the known universe.
Abhi held his hand out to one galaxy and the projections moved until it was laying in his palm. He used one palm to widen it slightly and showed it to Oria.
"This, is where earth is,“ he said pointing to an outer layer of it. He let it go and it flowed back into position.
He pressed another button and a few of the galaxies turned slightly purple.
"These are where we have contact with other worlds.”
He pressed another button and some turned red.
"And this is where we have records of old worlds that we’ve lost contact with.“
Oria stared in awe and wonder.
              "Where are we?” she asked.
"We,“ Abhi answered, "Are nowhere. We are in a completely different univerese, parrallel to our own.”
Oria’s jaw dropped.
              "How is that even possible?“
"No one knows. It just is.”
"That is the question of some of my grandfathers great work,“ Isbeil said, "He is a very talented scientist and philosopher.”
"Curiostiy is what makes us human my dear. Wonder. The strive for what we are and how we have become to be. It’s all one in the same.“
"There he goes lecturing me again.”
Abhi laughed heartely. He turned off the projections and the headlights came back on.
"You look tired,“ Isbeil said to Oria.
Oria looked at her watch.
"Where I come from it’s 2:30 in the morning. I had to get up early today too.”
"Then we should set you up for the night,“ Abhi replied, "Isbeil, would you show them to the guest rooms?”
              "Certainly grandfather.“
"We’ll talk more in the morning,” Abhi said as Isbeil showed them out of the study.
Isbeil took them to the second level where the house staff had already prepared their rooms. They were grand just like the rest of the house. The bed had a canopy over it and the headboard was covered in golden designs.
"There are night dresses in the closet,“ Isbeil said, "Goodnight.”
"Goodnight, and thank you" Oria replied as she closed the door behind her.
Oria washed her face and brushed her hair in the en suite bathroom before slipping into one of the gowns.
It looked like she’d be gone from home for some time. Her break up with Anthony came I the perfect time it seemed. At least he wouldn’t be waiting for her when she got back.
As she fell asleep her last thoughts were of her mother. Shaved head hidden by a bandanna. Smile still as bright as always. The twinkle in her eyes still there. She fell asleep with a smile on her lips and tears in her eyes.

is it me, or does Goetia's Buer sound like a good guy? or at least a true neutral at that, this descriptions make him look like a intellectual in philosophy, a tea aficionado and a skilled medic. so what if he is a polite daemon? MAYBE he lacks true morality but from what i can tell from this descriptions, he seems like at least a cultured (possibly) polite dude.

ZEPAR: Can make people infertile! What a dickweed. (X)
BOTIS: Future-telling, reconciliation, but never trust a viper with asword. (X)

SHAX: The stealerof senses! (X)
VINE: Discoverswizards and witches (!), but causes rough storms on waters. Also a King. (X)

MURMUR: A PERFECTphilosophy teacher and mediator to the dead. Just wear earplugs for histrumpeting cohorts. (O)
OROBAS: Tells ofthe past, present, future, and of divinity and the creation of the world. Saidto be "very faithful" to the summoner. What's not to love? (O)

DECARABIA: Theoriginal star man and ornithologist, he just wants you to understand birds! (O)
SEERE: He's likea demonic U-Haul truck, carrying things to and fro as demanded. Tells of thievery, but doesn't seem to condone it explicitly. (O)
DANTALION: Thelast great teacher of the 72, but can control people's minds. (X)
ANDROMALIUS:Perhaps the most just of all the demons, Andromalius is said to catch andpunish thieves and "discover all wickedness." There must be a lot ofinternal conflict in Hell's hierarchies, eh? (O)
So out of the 72, I have determined that 27 of them would be kind of nice. That’s not bad! But aside from the many teachers among them, Buer probably ends up with one of the best professions and demeanors, if not the best.
Tumblr media
Of course, all of these demons still have command over X number of demon legions, Buer with 50, so it’s probably all relative, anyway.

An Archdemon’s Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride, Vol. 9
By Fuminori Teshima and COMTA. Released in Japan as “Maou no Ore ga Dorei Elf wo Yome ni Shitanda ga, Dou Medereba Ii?” by HJ Bunko. Released in North America digitally by J-Novel Club. Translated by Hikoki.
As this series has gone on and become a reasonable success, the author has sensibly decided to widen its brief. As such, the “will they actually do anything?” parts get smaller and less relevant as time goes on. This is not to say that they’re absent, however, and we do get possibly the funniest moment in this volume when Zagan thinks that he and Nephy are literally cursed to never get closer to each other rather than, as everyone else around them can see, just being two socially awkward dorks in love. Still, at least the two of them share a honeymoon suite. That’s progress? And they sleep in each other’s arms, and call each other (as they are under cover) as “honey” and “dear”. But yeah, that’s all you’re going to get. Honestly, even Chastille and Barbatos make more progress in this book than Zagan and Nephy, who are adorable but really should grow up the teensiest bit. That said, they’re ahead of Shax, Mr. “I had your underwear in my pocket for a reason”.
The main thrust of the plot sees everyone converging on the Holy City for various reasons. That’s where Azazel’s Staff is, which is highly important to every single faction in the series. So we get the Angelic Knights, who don’t know much about it but know it should not fall into the wrong hands; Bifrons and Shere Khan, who have sent two minions to destroy the holy treasure room to get it; and Zagan and Nephy, who are actually there to try to find Orias, who might be able to help her cure Kuroka’s blindness, but end up looking for the staff as well. As you might imagine, there’s a lot of fighting towards the end of the book, mostly involving everyone attacking Zagan and his mopping the floor with them. That said, in the final battle against one of the stronger Angelic Knights, he has to use martial arts, rather than sorcery, to win. He regards this as a loss. Everyone else thinks he’s simply ridiculously overpowered.
It is amusing to see how many of the characters are leading double lives. There’s a traitor among the Angelic Knights, and you might briefly be worried for Chastille, but everyone agrees her alliance with Zagan is far too open and honest; she’s not tricky enough to be the real traitor. Then there’s Michael, who is secretly an Archdemon, but is also not the actual traitor. We also continue to get more insight on Alshiera, who continues to stay true to the course of “blond underage vampire mistress” in modern Japanese works, i.e. she’s pretending to be an irredeemable bad guy but really fits the caring mentor role better. And props to Foll, who is growing powerful enough to take on Bifrons and deal him actual damage. Our little dragon girl is growing up.
We’ve now caught up with Japan, as the 10th volume came out there two weeks ago, so it might be a bit till we get it here. Till then, though, this is a good, solid entry in the series, provided you don’t care that Zagan and Nephy are the most awkward couple ever – still.
