Gabriel Byrne, John Malkovich, Gérard Depardieu and Jeremy Irons as d'Artagnan, Athos, Porthos and Aramis in The Man in the Iron Mask (1998)

Okay but like someone needs to make a three musketeers obikin au so I don't have to cause like damn if you see Athos and D'artagnan and don't know their relationship is like Obi-wan and Anakin to a T then you must be blind

Hell Athos' ex? wife's name is Sabine!!! which sounds scarily close to Satine AND SHE'S ALSO BLONDE (is the three musketeers secretly an alternate universe of star wars IT JUST MIGHT BE)

Made as an experiment and as a protest against new film adaptations that insist on showing the Musketeers as dirty, old and lacking any finesse.

-CHAPITRE VII. L’INTÉRIEUR DES MOUSQUETAIRES
I love them. I love them!! it's also fun drawing as I read because I usually save any kind of drawing for after I've finished something so I can figure out a consistent design, but it's been a good time changing things as I go :) anyway, I wanted to draw all 4 of them in the same illustration, so here! we! go! (in order from left to right: d'artagnan, athos, porthos, and aramis)

An ask for an ask? Character breakdown: Athos. (If you want 😊)
Thank you for the ask!! <3
Oh you don't know what you've stepped into there, I *just* went to see The Three Musketeers new movie last night and hum, I have feelings (not necessarily in a very good way...)
If you're asking about Athos, it must have transpired that I like The Three Musketeers (as a book). I read it in my young teens, fell in love with those four idiots (affectionate), and d'Artagnan in particular, with the Friendship that is the core of the story. That feeling of fierce loyalty, no matter where life takes you. I also fell in love with Alexandre Dumas' style. The universe he created, his humor, the colorfulness and joy in his writing.
Anyway, back to Athos.
How I feel about this character.
He's probably my second favorite. In film adaptations, he's often reduced to a tragic and rather sad figure, but he's so much more than that. Yes, he's a sad drunk, but he isn't sad all the time. He's wise and he's an important mentor to d'Artagnan (especially in the early years). And he's just as funny and daring as the rest of them. One other thing that the movies often get wrong is that they make Porthos the only "bon vivant", but they all are. The eat and drink away all their money all the time. They live for intrigues and adventures. *All* of them.
I do have issues with the whole Milady thing. Not Athos' most glorious actions there... I don't want to spoil too much but if you know the story, well, those were questionable actions...
All the people I ship romantically with this character
I'm not really a shipper as a 30 something, and I was even less a shipper at 13, so I've always seen the whole friendship as perfectly platonic. And his one (past) love story didn't end well, so... yeah, no shipping for Athos.
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Athos & d'Artagnan, probably. Like I said, I like their particular bond within the quatuor. It's somewhere between a father/son dynamic and older brother/younger brother.
My unpopular opinion about this character
I wish adaptations would respect the characters' ages a bit more accurately. Athos is only 10 years older than d'Artagnan, so not even 30 when the story begins.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
I wish adaptations would show more of his happy/daring side. We're talking about a character who's able to duel left-handed. Who upon learning his new BFF has to go to England decides they'll all go. Etc.. I also wish there were adaptations of Twenty Years Later, Charles I, Charles II and all that. Athos has a big part in that.
Book canon-wise, I wish he had a happier ending.

Tom was only like 27 here. He looks so young, but also looks and sounds just like he does now. What is it with his sexy, laid back way of speaking, he’s so beautiful, I just can’t…

First of all, can someone who's better versed in Dumas confirm that I am not currently hallucinating a short novel called D'Artagnan by Dumas le pere himself, which takes place between Three Msuketeers and Twenty Years After.
Second of all, if my dream job does not work out, my second dream job turns out to be analyzing The Man in the Iron Mask movie from 1998 frame by frame.

In case you didn't notice, Athos looks older than Richelieu in this movie :D
I couldn't get a close up shot of Treville but I am pretty sure even he looks younger than him

The only Three Musketeers adaptations I’m willing to consume are Barbie and the Three Musketeers (2009) and soviet movie musical D’Artagnan and the Three Musketeers (1978) sorry not sorry
#this isn’t aimed at anyone just saying it in general#Barbie was my gay awakening#boyarsky as d’Artagnan was my bi awakening#rewatching the Barbie movie after reading the source material is fascinating#like not only do you catch small references like the mentions of Constance and lady winter#but also realise that there are quite a few parallels too#treville knowing corinne’s father#corinne upsetting the three (future) musketeers during her chase#the personalities of the characters#i love it so much#I was always curious why aramina got a clear name reference while the others didn’t#like maybe something like athena and portia instead of renee and viveca#but eh what do I know#but also again#aramina is clearly supposed to be aramis#not only bc of the name but also personality and romantic nature wise#the other two are a bit harder cause it’s less clear#I guess viveca is porthos?? cause fashion and all that#and that leaves renee as athos and I kinda see it but also not really#I know Barbie movies were never exact adaptations so it’s silly to expect exact parallels#but hey a girl can dream right#also I hc corinne as a total lady killer like d’Artagnan was in the oh lmao#Barbie is gay argue with a wall#OH ALSO THEY NAMED HER HORSE ALEXANDER#IDK IF IT WAS INTENTIONALLY AFTER ALEXANDER DUMAS BUT IF IT WAS THAT’S A NEAT LITTLE REFERENCE#okay I’m done ranting#nia shut up challenge#the three musketeers#barbie and the three musketeers#d’Artagnan and the three musketeers
