If you want to get started with vintage pens - like, VINTAGE vintage and not a cartridge filler from the 80s (not to disparage 80s pens; the Targa is superb) - the pen to get is this guy, the Esterbrook J.
Esterbrook was in the business of office supply, so they built their pens to be simple, sturdy, and reliable. These days they're easy to get for not much money, and they write great.
And they're customizable. The nib unit unscrews from the section, and Esterbrook sold replacements in a variety of styles. The 9556 nib is their premium "firm fine". You can get new old stock nibs on eBay pretty easily.
And if you don't like green, well...
They also come in black.
Just a great little pen for all occasions. And not bad looking, either.
Highlights include empty Colorverse and Herbin 1670 bottles, a potential Robert Oster dupe for my beloved Sheaffer Turquoise (whichgotdiscontinued grumblegrumble), a lot of green overall (including 4 samples and of course the Clairefontaine notebook), searching for a favorite coral/sage green/light orange go-to ink, and Sailor Manyo Haha. It’s swabbin’ time!
Side note: I haven’t forgotten about the Galen Leather Writer’s Bag review, I’ve just gotten sidetracked with five other projects. The very short version is that if you’re obsessed with it, go for it, but Goulet Pens may offer a better experience.
Ahhhhhh....I bought this ink a while back after loving the color from a sample. Didn't realize it was scented. It's pretty awful. Oddly floral and cloyingly sweet. 🤢 I do still love the color though.
I’ve been craving something small because my B6 planner was feeling a bit too hefty and going unused, so I was testing out using a pocket Leuchtturm I had on hand for bullet journaling the last few weeks.
In the end, I've decided to go back to A6 for planning (for the first time since I think 2017?) I picked up a Sterling Ink blank grid TRP A6 notebook with 520 pages and I love how thiccc it is 🤌✨
It’s sort of gonna be a catch-all, bullet journal, commonplace book, ugly sketchbook, and scribble center that I’m gonna keep on me almost literally at all times (I don’t even remember the last time I traveled with my planner in my bag or kept it on my nightstand but we’re gonna start doing that again!)
One of my only rules in order to keep it simple and resist the urge to over-decorate and get caught up in the aesthetics rather than the practicality is to just use the one ☝️ pen and ink: my Pilot Vanishing Point with an EF nib and inked with De Atramentis Document Ink in Urban Grey 😌🩶
This page for planning looks neat/organized but my notes and commonplace pages aren't so much and I’m adoring it 💞 Been working to embrace imperfections and “hand of the creator” vibes in my art so I’m extending that to the other pages in this notebook 😌 (my planning pages still have to have a modicum of order tho otherwise I’d lose half my to-dos in the chaos 🫨)
oh god the autism it's overlapping. we see vlad use a variety of different fountain pens in danny phantom and he is TOTALLY a montblanc guy. one of those hyperexpensive one in 1,000 limited edition world leader pens or something, probably a football player themed one. he uses de atramentis document inks or platinum carbon black if hes feeling a little zesty and different. he gives danny a lime green glow in the dark kaweco sport and at first danny HATES it and think its a trap or a tracker or something but its legit just a pen. he thinks it makes him look nerdy to use it at school but he DOES use it at home and manages not to spring the tines because of some stern instruction from vlad (that he also hated). it inevitably gets dropped nib down or something but just vlad replaces it whenever that happens. danny hates benefiting from vlad's wealth or getting ANY gifts from him... but it is a really nice pen and he uses it a lot so he begrudgingly accepts the replacements
btw vlad absolutely has one of the urushi vanishing points on his desk hes totally that kind of ceo. one of the ones with sparkly blue.
also sidenote jack and maddie are using those oily ballpoint bic pens that come in packs of 40 and jazz either uses pilot g2s, sparkly gel pens from the dollar store, or eventually a twsbi eco because she wanted something "fancy" to use to make her feel more mature and girlbossed up (is baby)
De Atramentis Document Black, as it's nice and dark, waterproof, and doesn't bleed. Lately I've also been loving Robert Oster Summer Storm, which is not waterproof but is very pretty.
As I continue to stroll my way though peach inks, this week’s review is De Atramentis Peach (45ml, $14.00). Now I don’t know how I missed it, but this is one of their fragrance inks. Normally that would be a detractor for me, but this one smelled very lightly of peaches. It reminded me of my favorite peach tea.
It is not, however, that Peach Fuzz Pantone look-alike. It is ripe, juicy,…
I'm making a DIY col-o-ring style ink swatch book, and like... Do you think I have enough brown ink???? (Just got the De Atramentis Urban Sienna today.)
random question because i enjoy seeing you talk about pens and inks hehe. what's your favorite pen you own and your top 3 inks (or more if you feel that its not enough <3)
ooooohhhh yes thank you!! i love talking about fountain pens and inks because it’s a pretty niche hobby for people my age in the US so i always jump at the chance to tell people about it lol
my favorite pen is my pilot prera! (disclaimer: i don’t own any gold nib pens) it’s very lightweight and small, and since i have small hands, it’s sized perfectly for me unposted, and comfortable posted. i don’t ever post my pens because i have baby hands and small fingers lol. i have the blue demonstrator version and the ivory version, both in a fine nib. if i could have the perfect prera, it would be the ivory prera with a gold trim and clip/finial instead of silver.
also. i only write with steel nibs (for now) but pilot makes my favorite nibs hands down. even for steel nibs, they’re sooo springy and smooth, even in the japanese EF size. when i upgrade to a gold nib, it’s definitely going to be a pilot (i’m just deciding between the e95s or the elabo/falcon).
top 3 inks is so hard for me lmao… i’d say… 1: sailor ink studio 224, 2: sailor manyo haha, 3: pilot iroshizuku kon-peki
(tbh i’d go for 3: sailor yurameku kyokuya but i feel like i can’t have 3 multichrome shading sailor inks as my favorites, and i genuinely love kon-peki) huuuge honorable mention for de atramentis document black, which is probably the ink i use the most lmao…. everybody needs a good black ink, and de atramentis document black is my choice of black ink. it’s quick drying, waterproof, well-behaved, and it’s suuuch a dark saturated pitch-black black. and you can highlight over it! it’s the ink i use in my hobonichi cousin for planning and note-taking purposes, and i know i can count on it to behave well even on cheap paper.
