X-Files Collector’s Edition: Coming Home to Their Unremarkable House

Whether they be road-weary, discouraged at their losses, or happy in each other, Mulder and Scully always carve out a piece of the world for themselves to bunker into. These fics are a few variations on finding their perfect home.

““She’d lost so much, sacrificed so much. Little more than five minute phone calls to her mother on store bought burner phones to connect her to her old life. You’ve considered it so many times, just up and leaving. You’d be doing her a favor, allowing her a freedom she hadn’t known since walking into your office nearly ten years ago. Every time you’ve talked yourself into it, the mere sight of her so small in an over sized hotel bed, clutching a blanket, the last remaining connection to her son, and you’d found yourself breaking down instead. So selfish. So, so selfish. But not anymore.””  

Mulder is so moved by Scully’s noble sacrifices that he puts his “selfishness” aside to get her what will truly make her happy. 

CSM’s Home Sweet Home 

““She can see a rainbow of emotions fly across Dana’s face before she nods her head in agreement. Dana finger’s curl around her own phone, the metallic blue of the Razor glistening in the bright sunlight.

“Do you need to make a call before we go?” Anna Maria asks her kindly.

Dana shakes her head, “I want to see the house before I call, makes no sense getting….I prefer to see the house first.””

Monica’s realtor aunt gets two interesting clients; but loyalty to her niece keeps her nose directly out of their business. 

Chibiness’s Impulse Buy

““Missy told her once her impulsiveness would only end her up in trouble; that no good could ever come from an impulse buy. So she swapped her impulsive attitude from clothes to life choices.

Like swapping her focus from medicine to the FBI.

And getting a tattoo on a dare.

And running away from her respected life to a life on the lam.””

Scully impulsively buys a house for Mulder; but her happiness drops when she thinks Mulder doesn’t want it. Happily, that is not the case.

Scully sees Mulder’s desperate scramble to turn their UH into a home for her. She follows him into the woods, and is surprised by his kindness.

Mulder and Scully settle into their house; and agree to never mention any “lost time”, instead savoring the present.

Mulder rents Legally Blonde to shake up his and Scully’s odd feelings.

No more transient jobs for Scully, no more windows they had to draw the blinds on so nobody would find out where he, Mulder, was hiding.””

Mulder’s banter hits a raw nerve of Scully’s, since they can’t welcome William to the new home she bought them. He leaves a sign up for him, anyway.

Summer Humidity

““Despite the window A.C. unit spitting out cold air, Scully pulled back the sheets to their bed in a haze of sleep. Sweat clung to her and she felt gross. She was hot and sweaty and she bemoaned the thought how bad summers in Virginia could get with the humidity, even with dying A.C, and how much she had forgotten in the years she had been absent. She rolled onto her stomach ungracefully, her arm making a large sweeping motion, searching for Mulder, only to find the bed empty. Her sleepy mind blinked itself awake as she sat up in bed. Mulder was nowhere to be found.

They had just purchased the unremarkable house.””

Scully finds Mulder awake one hot and sticky night, simply absorbing the feeling of their new house. She joins, content.

They had fun, teasing each other and flirting as paper plates and silverware were unpacked from the final bag and Scully began making them peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Sitting crisscross applesauce on the living room floor, Mulder and Scully ate their sandwiches and chips. While Mulder got up for two glasses of iced tea, Scully stole half of his Cheetos off his plate and when he returned, Mulder pretended not to notice, smirking to himself as he caught sight of the red stains on her fingertips.””

Mulder and Scully are so happy with their domesticity that they dance.

He always had a feeling that settling into a home would feel better for both of them, but he hadn’t realized just how much tension had been stuck between them since they hit the road. The moment she walked up the steps and took a deep breath, turned to him and said, “It’s perfect,” was the moment he realized just how much time they had spent being upset and stressed. She looked ten years younger that day, with a braid hanging over her shoulder.””

Mulder observes as Scully slowly adjusts to calm domesticity, even considering writing to Maggie.

““I'm not trying to impress anyone," she said as she turned to look at him more fully.  "I just want some flowers; what's the crime in that?"

"Scully, I'm not saying..." he started and then stopped.  "It's just that you've never shown much interest in...in nesting.”"

Mulder questions Scully about her new botanical bent. She finally feels “home.”

They have a home. With a porch, and a gas-burning stove, and a clawfoot bathtub, and a dusty old attic. His leather couch is out of storage, their books together on the shelves. In the last few weeks of living here, he’s felt strange, like he’s been peering in from the outside at the life of another, luckier man.””

Mulder’s joy over his new domesticity with Scully bubbles over in October.

Mulder chops wood for he and Scully to admire in their new home while they brew up plans for the future.

“Is there bacon?”

“Maybe,” she said with a smile.

“Dana Scully,” he said with a teasing tone. “Are you giving us an idyllic Christmas?””

Mulder calls Maggie for a home warming and Christmas dinner all rolled in one.

““All immediate reservations aside she’d grab his hand, the slap of the screen door a symphony of forgotten charges, dead bodies being dragged across the threshold finally laid to rest.  

“Here,” She’d say as she beckoned him against what would surely be his office door.  “Is where we’ll fight about you leaving trails of sunflower seeds on the floor.  A chocking hazard if I’ve ever seen one.””

S8 Mulder and Scully map out their son’s future growth on the walls of the Unremarkable House. It all ends squashed hopes. (I like to skip the sad ending and Frankenstein it into my happier headcanon post S8.)

"I can't, Mulder.  How?  There's no..."  She shook her head in automatic denial. "I can't," she repeated. 

"Scully... your mother's funeral... surely we can find a way.”"

Mulder is shattered to have to tell Scully about Maggie’s death; but he is blown away by her strength and belief in her mother’s love and understanding.

Scully suggests marriage practically; but Mulder is soon heartened to find out his wife does, indeed, have a romantic streak as well.

Mulder and Scully are married, mortgaged, and medically bed-bound all in the hopes her IVF miracle won’t succumb to the placenta previa diagnosis. She quilts for her family while she waits.

Bound Together With Invisible Cord

““I once told Scully I'd walk through fire for her.  I did not say those words lightly.  She would do the same for me.  She has, a hundred times over. It is getting late.  

She has been asleep for at least five hours.””

Mulder waits for Scully to wake from her drugged sleep, reminiscing over their relationship and their daughter.

Even though the IVF fails, Mulder insists he and Scully still buy the UH. 

Follow up AU where Scully gets to rock William in the white chair 

““She’s too tired to get up on a sunny Saturday morning. They were meant to be pulling the million year old tile backsplash out of the kitchen today, but she’s just so sleepy.””

After Scully collapses during their home renos, she and Mulder speed up their house projects before the impending arrival of their son.

Should i skipp classes tomorrow.

Reasonings: I am veryvery tired and am suposed to turn in an assigment (not rlly graded/i can just turn it in next class) for writing class wich consists in an objective description of my face, thing that has the posibility of makimg me spiral since i am mentally ill and transgender. 5. Do you respond to comments?

For a while I did and then I forgot again and I'm always afraid I will reply to someone but oversee someone else. In theory I want to respond to all of them! I just got two amazing ones in the last two days. So thoughtful and so plain kind. I definitely need to reply to these people.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I wrote one where Mulder dies (of old age, though) but I'm not even sure it's on AO3.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

All of them have a happy ending! I don't think I have a story without a happy ending.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I have. Mostly in the distant past, but I think some more recent hate too. If I remember correctly, it wasn't directed at a fic in particular but rather at me as a writer in general.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I have written a few smut stories. I know it's a popular genre, but I gotta be honest and admit that it's just not my favorite. Neither writing nor reading it. I know that's a very unpopular opinion.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Again, not on tumblr, but I think I wrote a Frasier/Hot in Cleveland crossover once.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Hmmm. I think maybe one?

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I have! I co-wrote Eden with a bunch of others! I mean we each wrote chapters but that still counts, right? It was a lot of fun and I'd love to do it again.

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

Mulder and Scully

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

My Five Minutes Series. I think about it so often but I like the chapters I have written a lot and I'm afraid to screw it up by writing more.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I'm decent at writing dialogue.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Everything. I struggle with describing an environment or surroundings. I gotta admit I sometimes even skip reading those parts when other people write them. I don't see those things in my head.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Technically I always write dialogue in another language since English isn't my native language. I've written a few German fanfics and that was a lot of fun. Might do it again.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

It was either Friends or X-Files. Or if we count stories I only wrote for myself then it's Scarecrow and Mrs. King.

26. List some season 7 MSR headcanons

Season of secret sex began after Millennium (I think their first time could've been earlier but for sure they started doing it regularly here)

Mulder's dream sequence in Amor Fati was influenced by his telepathy; CSM and Diana were there in the beginning because they were close by, but Scully didn't show up in the dream until she was close enough for his mind to pick up on, and CSM and Diana were out of range by then so that's why they were gone by the end

Not sure if this technically counts as a headcanon but Sein Und Zeit and Closure just did not happen, that was such a stupid and underwhelming ending to Samantha's story (brilliant acting by DD though especially in the last scene where he gets to say goodbye to her, frankly carried the whole thing on his shoulders)

Oh yeah and Mulder and Scully definitely fucked when she stayed over after telling him the results of his mother's autopsy

After En Ami Mulder and Scully backed off their sexual relationship for a while, the tension between them laying the groundwork for Scully's soul-searching in All Things when she ultimately decided Mulder is who she's meant to be with

35. Give us your MSR sexy time headcanons

First time was after Milagro, the tonal shift between Milagro and The Unnatural is insane and clearly indicates a significant change in their relationship

They definitely had sex after The Unnatural

I know this contradicts the first one but I also have a headcanon that their first time was after the IVF failed, and sometimes I like to place that right before Milagro, so they have comfort sex but don't have a chance to talk about it before the Padgett case starts and the rest of the episode happens in that context

Listen, I have no "WIP folder." I don't even know what that would look like; I'm not about organization in a Google Drive in that way. But recently I went through and made a list of all the WIPs I've got going, and I was kind of shocked when I realized how many there are. Especially because I really do write on most of these semi-regularly.

I have a dribs and drabs document where I start writing little scenes and sometimes they take off (e.g. All the Dead Mulders, Negotiation). There are a few scenes in there with more legs, including an All Things scene.

I can't imagine anyone has that many questions about these cryptic titles, but I'd answer some if you do.

@cheolhub SAR SAR the sweetest ever like :[ sar was my first mutual when i started on tumblr and she scared me at first bc ... she was so a cool to me atthe time AND SHE STILL IS SO COOL. LIKE SAR IS SO COOL 2 ME but now i see that she is also so loving and caring and c: she will always hold a special place in my heart bc she was the first 2 dm me (I REMEMBER. Skinner is forced to work against Scully as she prepares to leave for Africa. His guilt is intensified when Scully catches on and withdraws all trust.

“Mulder…” Like a ghost, she maneuvered herself so they were looking at each other face to face. “Look at me.” Their eyes met. In the nightlight from the street lights below, Scully could see Mulder’s own tears. “Oh, Mulder.””

Mulder finally opens up about his vision; and Scully immediately dispels any loathsome thoughts he has about himself by affirming her loyalty and love.

Moments later, Margaret watches as Dana picks her way carefully across the lawn in those perilously high-heels she insists on wearing, her black overcoat wrapped tightly around her.  The sky is darkening rapidly, the far end of the garden where the lawn gives way to trees and the Patapsco River beyond, almost completely obscured.  Snow has begun to fall, swirling around and glowing in the glare from the coach lanterns.””

Post recovery, Mulder joins Scully for Christmas and gets involved in family bonding, saving Matthew from dramatically drowning late at night, winning Bill’s respect, and soaking up acceptance and love.

Diana Alexander’s Kaleidoscope Visions

““Not really, Scully, if you think about it.  If the mind has received so much information that it's incapable of receiving more, it does one of two things.  It either represses it or takes it into an arena that it can handle.  Apparently this is the arena where our minds agreed that we could handle.””

Scully is still in Africa... but somehow can communicate with Mulder via telepathy. He, of course, has a theory.

““I had been asleep most of the last forty-eight hours, finally knocked out by the barbiturates in my system. They had found no signs of a tumor, just signs of extremely abnormal brain function, as yet unexplained.  I am blown away by the grasp Mrs. Scully has of the situation; she is rattling off every detail with an authoritative poise that I have only seen in her daughter's demeanor.  

I make no attempt to speak, just nodding my head occasionally to show that I am indeed listening and comprehending every word of her monologue.””

Mulder’s pain disspiates after Scully kicks Diana out and leaves him in the care of her mother and TLG. He blearily waits for her return from Africa.

Safe Haven

““I tell the guys to just wait a couple minutes while I grab a wheelchair and enter Mulder's private room, a room I had fought hard to get him, along with a treatment plan that included fewer drugs and fewer unwelcome visitors. Banning Diana Fowley may have been seen as the actions of a jealous woman, but I was still not convinced that she hadn't exacerbated his condition by slipping some drug into his bloodstream.  I could see right through her concern.  I knew she still worked for the Consortium, whatever still remained of it.””

Scully returns from Africa, victorious-- hailed by TLG, and sneak-hugged by an incredibly happy Mulder.  

Gwendolyn’s Temporary Shelter 

““It isn't proximity, then? You're hearing thoughts from people further away?" It was a new twist she hadn't even considered before.

"Not exactly." He wore the enigmatic expression he donned when he was holding some new mystery close to him, unwilling to share.

"Then what?" she asked.

"I don't think we're necessarily the only ones here."

Scully springs Mulder from the hospital to hide out in Africa, hoping to secure his safety while she digs for answers. In his isolation, Mulder uncovers the journal of a woman whose fate was also tied up in the mystery of the buried spaceship.

Amatia’s Midnight on the Firing Line

““I've seen this before, in Russia. Look, if you don't believe me, fine. But Agent Mulder must, because that's my name on your hand."

Skinner sighed, and nodded. Krycek filled the syringe, and injected it into the IV bag of saline. He handed Skinner the other bottle. "You've got to do it again when they replace the IV."

Skinner slid the bottle into his pocket, and looked down at Mulder, who was becoming more aware. "Agent Mulder?" he asked.

"Krycek's gotta get out of here," Mulder said, his voice raspy. "Diana's coming."

Mulder breaks out of the hospital with the help of Skinner and Krycek; but unfortunately, no one is ever truly “free” with the Syndicate right behind.

A Slightly Different Path - Chapter 3 - Constant Love

““After she left, he felt so alone, his mind buzzing. He had more nightmares, not wanting to rely solely on the painkillers to help him sleep. He would call her sobbing, needing to hear her voice, to know she was not dead, her blood running across the floor as he had just dreamt. Or her face blue from choking, or her body only bones and found in a shallow grave.

She took every call, talking to him until he stopped crying, telling him repeatedly that she was there and she was okay.””

Mulder is tortured by nightmares as he slowly recovers; but his reflection through his trauma gives him a beautiful analogy for his (*gasp*) wife Scully. 

While recovering, Mulder’s continuous nightmares enable him to fully translate his newfound contentment to his (*gasp*) secret wife Scully. Peace is achieved. 

Sarah Segretti’s (Ao3) A Less Certain World (Ao3) 

“"No, Mulder. I looked. I know your scars. I saw nothing new. And your blood work in the hospital showed nothing I considered unusual." So I escaped Skinner's fate, then. "What, then?" My voice wobbles. Her eyes are still full. "I'm afraid -" And so am I, because that’s the second time today she’s admitted to an emotion she never admits she has - "I'm afraid the enhanced brain activity and the medications and the tests may have caused -" She stops, licks her lips, takes a breath. Her voice is very small. "Brain damage." Everything goes white and silent for a moment. Was this what it was like for her to hear the word "cancer"? She’s still talking - about having me tested, about finally taking me to a neurologist or two, how she should have done this before but I was in no mental shape - and her words slide past me like drops of rain down a windshield. Nothing sticks except those two words.””

Mulder’s sluggish recovery is shaken when Scully finally confesses that she, TLG, and Skinner performed remote brain surgery via the Biogenesis map, which gave him permanent brain damage. He begins to drown in fear, PTSD, and the implications of aliens blueprinting his genome while Scully scrambles to aid the newly-formed Resistance and reconfigure a cure for Mulder.

Magnifique! This fic isn’t about the bigger plot happening in the background: it’s about Mulder’s trauma in the face of irrevocable change and fear that he will lose his self-identity, too.

fxthisit’s You’re It

““What’s there to talk about?” She got her coat, “I’m not abandoning you, Mulder, if you are worried about that. I don’t know about you, but my priority has always been my work and the X-files.” She started heading out the room before turning around at the doorway, regarding Mulder with a look. “We’re partners, Mulder. I still got your back. I’ll see you tomorrow morning at the scene,” she turned around and walked away, leaving Mulder dazed with only the receding sound of her heels....””

Apparently, fate decided not to give Scully a break. Diana’s alive, and hands Mulder a vague “I’m better now” excuse... which he tries to make Scully accept. Instead, she gently withdraws, redraws lines, and continues her work... which almost leads her to her death. 

(And while Diana not being dead is a big fat bummer to end this list on, it IS in loose chronological order soooooo... format integrity!)

PROBATION VACATION-

I started writing last year and posted my first fic one year ago today with TONS of help from @xfmaweezy and @atths--twice.

I wanted to celebrate a year of writing, by posting my 75th fic- “Probation Vacation” and just like the first one, it’s DIANA / ANGST / ONE BED. It occurs during the flashback in Hollywood A.D. (remember the on set visit in LA happens about 12-15 months prior)

Cleaned, hair styled, and a dress picked out, she made her way to the adjoining door, which she found unlocked. As her eyes made sense of the scene in front of her, she panicked and froze. She swore she felt the world stop on its axis as she saw Mulder on his bed, hovering on his hand and knees just above a woman.

“Diana,” Mulder said.

Scully’s jaw dropped, realizing Diana Fowley was splayed beneath him, legs spread, and arms reaching around his back. He moved one hand to her wrist and then pressed it delicately against her neck.

What the hell , Scully thought, a tear falling down her cheek and rage pulsing in her veins—but she couldn’t turn away.

Her panic escalated as Mulder started undressing Diana, helping to remove her jacket and fishing her phone from the pocket.

“Fox, that tickles,” Diana squealed.

And— OH FUCK! Mulder, the man who had kissed her just hours ago—leaned his face down toward Diana’s mouth.

“Oh hey, Fox. Hi,” Diana said flirtatiously at his proximity.

“Hey, say something, Diana,” he said, and Scully was sure Mulder’s breath was tickling Diana’s lips.

“Fox Mulder, F.B.I.,” she teased playfully.

Scully gasped loudly. So loudly that Mulder jerked, obviously hearing her in the room now. He turned his head toward Scully while his mouth was just inches from Diana’s. He immediately worked to move from Diana's body, like a fox caught in a trap.

“Oh, hey, Agent Scully. Fox and I are catching up,” Diana said from her position underneath him.

Scully turned toward her room; she had to flee: maybe flee L.A., maybe flee the Earth . Anything to get away from the activity of her partner and his ex and whatever they were up to on his bed.

“Fox, you’re glad I’m here, right? Thanks for finding me,” Scully heard Diana say behind her.

“Mulder, I’m speechless. I have to go,” Scully said, her voice choked with tears, reaching for the door.

spoiler warning kind of also long ramble

episode 2 was actually insane, after charlie screamed and the slime turned into blood its just so like crazy to think that like ranboo fed charlie blood?? was charlie covered in blood the whole time in episode 1??

i looked back into ep1 because i was curious of when ranboos mask turned on and i noticed that charlie was hesitant to eat the food, and he needed those airplane noises, but he stalled for two minutes and stuff so that was weird?? did he really need the airplane noises or did he just not want to eat the food?? did he know something was wrong? could he tell that it was possibly blood,, guts,, or whatever??

and frank,, we all love frank but then like is he a actual corpse?? because the mask made us see stuff differently so could he be a actual persons corpse instead of a plastic skeleton?? the way sneeg looked at frank when they were on the (i dont know what its called that spinny thing or whatveer )

and the riddler,, when he looked at sneeg he could tell that somethign was wrong,, but he kept to himself and didnt say anything,, he knew he was going to die but he didnt know how

but the thing is in ep2 none of our choices mattered, they did the puzzles for us and our replacement partners just died and died, it never matterd who we picked in the start

(but did niki really have to gte shot twice like cmon man)

the fact that ranboo was being like controlled by the mask but still fought when they reached the hitw part was awesome,, they knew they had to be the one to get through there, not anyone elese

also can we just talk about that turn when the mask turned off?? that was so cool and scary atthe same time because they now see us, we aremt just some weird painting anymore we are there and they sees us

It came from this tweet from Gillian after Plus One had aired. When I starting writing fanfic and I had to create my pen name, I thought for a second and remembered the tweet. So I chose that for my name. 😊
