I love how Netflix’s The Diplomat are trying to make Dennison seem like this principled, empathetic, really lovely guy. And David Gyasi is obviously handsome and charming, so it mostly works.

But foreign secretaries are not members of the opposition party, which means that Dennison is also still a fucking Tory -- if he’s principled, his principles are shit.

You can tell The Diplomat is well crafted TV because for some brief moments you can almost forget that Austin Dennison is still a fucking Tory 💀

Netflix decides if they are going to renew a show based on how many people watch all episodes the first month it's on. If you liked The West Wing, you will like this too! In fact, I think it's better than TWW, because it's set more in the real world, and doesn't contain sorkin's misogyny. Plus, a woman is the main character! The creator worked on TWW and Homeland, and this show combines the best elements of each.

Kate is a career diplomat who was working on getting people who helped the US out of Afghanistan, particularly women. She's ordered by the Biden stand in president, played by Micheal McKean, to take the appointment of ambassador to the UK, a post normally given as a reward to powerful donors, and one requiring speeches and shaking hands more often than actual work. She's determined to make a difference while there however.

Her marriage to Hal, a former ambassador and high profile diplomat in his own right, is ending(?), but he's going with her for the first few weeks while she gets up to speed for PR purposes and support. They're both having trouble in this switch of roles as they try to define new boundaries.

Their relationship is entertainingly codependent and complex. They have terrific chemistry, and are totally believable as a long time couple who love each other, but don't know if that's enough anymore.

Speaking of chemistry, Austin Dennison is the Foreign Secretary who's far more qualified to be PM than the blowhard BoJo stand in he serves. He wants to trust Kate and work with her toward common goals, but the Iraq war and more has damaged US/UK relations.

Stuart Hayford is Kate's Deputy Chief of Mission, a job Kate's more used to doing herself, and is having trouble relinquishing. He's also receiving orders about Kate from the WH Chief of Staff.

Stuart is in a secret relationship with CIA Station Chief Eidra Park. She's used to dealing with secrets, but some of the ones he's keeping may be more than their bond can tolerate. She expects Kate to be the typical political appointee, and has to rapidly adjust her opinion.

The center of the show, and where it shines, is its focus on the politics of the world we live in as the characters deal with terrorism, intrigue, corruption, and political text and subtext. The few times the show stumbles is when it forgets that, and focuses on the relationships too much. That's rare though, and the show normally does a good job of integrating both into an engrossing whole.

No country is presented as perfect, and if there are heroes they're more likely to be the unsung career foreign service employees more often solving problems in spite of elected officials and political appointees rather than because of them. I highly recommend it!

ETA: The final episode ends in a cliffhanger. It didn't bother me, especially since the outcome seemed obvious to me, but I wanted to mention it.

The Diplomat on Netflix... spoilers maybe?

So, I wanna blame the PM (called it back when Maggie Roylin was showing Kate how Scotland wants to have another vote), but... 

Maggie was the only one that Kate told that Hal was meeting the Tory PM and Maggie knew who he was “glancingly”, except why would she tell the truth? Add to that that Maggie herself was Tory and that she’d been advising the PM from behind the scenes and I don’t think that the PM was behind either the car bomb or the hit on Lenkov. 

I think it’s been Maggie the whole time. Whether or not she’s been using the PM or he’s just a patsy for someone else (Hal, the Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison, or someone else like Ganon or the President), who knows? 

But I’m positive she’s the one behind it.

hey! what do you think of kate and dennison's dynamic? i got hooked on to the show after you posted about it

it's a fun show! The Diplomat was my first foray back into political TV after a looooong time. I think I fall somewhere in between "Hal Wyler is the only man who will ever *get* Kate" and "Hal Wyler is The Worst and Kate should leave his ass and get with Austin Dennison ASAP". Like, Kate and Austin work really well together (watching that progression was actually kind of great) and on a personal level they have excellent chemistry. tbh the idea that had most merit was in that episode set in Chevening House where Dennison's sister Cecilia is like "what's better than just one of them? two." The idea that Kate can get different things from two different men (because I think Hal will push her in a way Austin won't, even if he's a bitch at times and the pushing is the means to his own ends) feels very valid to me.

My only thing is, I wish something had actually happened between Kate/Austin by episode 8 because the, uh, situation that happened at the end of episode 8, to me, all but ensures Kate goes running back to Hal and Kate/Austin will be put on the backburner.

A great deal of the drama in “The Diplomat” hinges on Sewell’s chemistry with Russell, and the actor admits, “So much of what we have together was there on day one.” He knew of his costar as “a great actor” and felt “from watching her that we’ll work well together.” Their characters’ dynamic is so rich in part because, in the actor’s words, “He was the number one, the main guy, she was working for him… now she is going for the number one spot.” Despite how it might seem, the Emmy nominee doesn’t define Kate and Hal in terms of “competitiveness,” but rather that their role reversal is just “not a natural fit for either of them.”

Some of Sewell’s favorite scenes to shoot come in the back half of the season, when at the English country manor of British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), Hal meets and forms a connection with Dennison’s sister, played by T’Nia Miller. “It was kind of blissful really, this beautiful, beautiful place,” reflects the actor of shooting on location in the countryside. Hal’s “rather taken with this very clever and languorous, witty, and super bright woman,” and the two take a romantic dip in a “Victorian slimy lake.” The dalliance reinforces how much Hal cares for his wife, though, a detail the series star finds “very, very moving.” goldderby. com 2023

for the ask thingy, simply because i cannot choose which i dislike the least: kate wyler + hal wyler or kate wyler + austin dennison, from the diplomat (perhaps put a bit strongly, but i sort of dislike both of them for her. i vote eidra!)

Haha love this. Well I got to say I LOVE Kate x Austin. It could be interesting to see how a romance dynamic would play out given the two of them are high rank politicians. I think they understand each other and just make a great team.

I agree though, I don't like Kate and Hal at all. I never did, not when I first watched s1, not now. This dissonance i feel between them both could ofc be done on purpose, because we know They were almost going for a divorce (?) But yeah, i don't ship them at all
