im writing this all in one go so it's probably not very coherent, but i wonder if something could be said about the commodification of fandom and fan labor online... like in my mind i have this conception of "old-style" fandoms (analog, pre-internet, communication between fans is face-to-face or through slow communication systems like mail/phone/irl conventions, fanwork like art/fic is created but availability is mostly limited to fans themselves) versus "new-style" (digital, post-internet, communication between fans is generally virtual and instantaneous, massive social structures interlinked w/ social media systems, fanwork as a mode of expression is in the public consciousness and works themselves on sites like ff.net/ao3 are mostly visible to all)

anyway i don't want to make sweeping judgements about whether or not one is better than the other, but i do often think about the way modern fan energy is so easily... harnessed? capitalized on? exploited? in this (imo) unique way... like there's this dual state mass media is in where it's undoubtedly a product, but also it can be art, right? so it inspires emotion and appreciation, and a social group (a fandom) springs up to take part in appreciating it together. but there is massive profit to be made in the PRODUCT sense, so fan engagement can act as free advertisement... think of how entertainment companies highlight fan reactions or even cater TO fans. i guess for me this presents a deep conflict i'm unable to reconcile, because fanwork, or even just Posting about a piece of media, can be seen as an expression of love, but how close to advertisement is it? i know that creative output can stand on its own artistic merits even if it does serve to advertise, but i feel uncomfortable with propagating it sometimes, because uncontrolled consumption like... bugs me... yknow?

Pocono Palace has been sold. The property will close and change hands on May 2nd, 2024.

I’ve spent so much time exploring and researching the dead resorts in this area and in the midst of all those visits, Pocono Palace has been my saving grace. It’s one of the few places I feel is still so authentically old-school-honeymoon-era-Poconos and still has its champagne glass tubs, round beds and heart shaped pools. It has also been one of the places we have continuously stayed at while doing Pocono research for this account.

So seeing it join the long list of dead Pocono hotels breaks my heart. I’d like to think the new owners will continue to run it exactly as it is but I’ve heard that it will be turned into a rehab center or wellness facility. Time will tell.

When my life journey took me to Italy, even the mere glimpse of an Israeli flag flying over a food stall in the city of Varese would provoke me. “This is our food!” I told my colleague. “Israelis can sell mujaddara, hummus, maqlubeh and falafel, but they cannot declare them their property!” As if stealing the land, water, and air were not enough?! This food is part of our identity and culture. For me as a Palestinian, each plate has a story that relates to my people, the state, and the fragrances of my homeland.

Israel uses food to claim ownership of the territory and encourage tourism, not only internally but also abroad, featuring it in advertisements and in articles published in international newspapers and world-famous magazines. Israeli chefs present huge events in which they appropriate Palestinian cuisine and our cultural foods, denying the origins of these foods and pretending that they are theirs. As Israelis proclaim ownership of plates whose origins lie in the Middle East, the Levant, or even Egypt, they deny the existence of the people who live on this land and whose dishes and recipes are much older than the state of Israel.

Someone as tenacious as I cannot let this go by unchallenged. Instead, I have decided to use food as a soft power tool to fight the occupation. Food has become my means to speak about Palestine.

Historically, cuisine has been a mirror of civilization, culture, heritage, and the economic status of a people. Likewise, Palestinian dishes reflect all these aspects and elements. Take musakhan, for example, a Palestinian farmer’s dish that traditionally has been cooked during the olive harvest season: tabun bread is drenched in olive oil, covered with onions that have been caramelized in olive oil, and topped with sumac. All these ingredients are the fruit of Palestinian land. As living standards rose, chicken was added, then toasted almonds and pine nuts were sprinkled on top. But despite these changes, the dish has kept its original flavors as its essence has been passed down from generation to generation, preserving the authenticity of the dish.

Our occupiers can take possession of our food in the material sense, as they have done and continue to do with our land. But they cannot transmit its history, traditions, and associated sentiments because we Palestinians consider our food to be a thread that brings us together and connects us to our homeland – especially those of us who live in the diaspora.

It is no coincidence that many Palestinian poets and writers talk about food when they express their longing for their homeland. The famous Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish, for example, wrote while in exile, “Dearly I yearn for my mother’s bread, my mother’s coffee.”

Food is part of Palestinian identity wherever we go. It reflects our culture, heritage, and personality.

What is Cultural Appropriation?

Cultural appropriation is the wrongful use (e.g. ignorant consumption, theft, bastardization, oversimplification, or unauthorized commercial use) of cultural properties from a culture outside one’s own. If you use cultural customs or iconography without the understanding or regard to how it is meant to be used and by whom, you are appropriating. Similarly, in creative writing, you are appropriating if you divorce elements of a culture from their context and meaning, and bring them into your worldbuilding solely for their aesthetic value (“because it’s cool”).

This is different from “cultural appreciation,” which also involves using or adopting a cultural property, but done so in an appropriate context and often with the guidance or invitation of those from that culture.

Why is appropriation harmful? First, it contributes to the misrepresentation of these cultures in media, even if your work is understood to be fictional or speculative. Real life marginalized groups already have a hard time finding authentic representation. Second, it contributes to the history of colonial appropriation and theft. Stolen art and artifacts, many of which still unattributed or undated, remain in museums and private collections today. All because of people who felt entitled to the aesthetics of their colonial subjects while throwing out their cultural significance.

To avoid appropriation, do your research and engage in dialogue with people from that culture. Read their stories and talk with them. Ask them to critique your work and follow their feedback. Show care and respect.

She's not doing it to compensate-- she only does it when she doubts there will be anyone around to see.

In contrast, at Touga's birthday party-- where Nanami, Nanami's cronies, Anthy, and even Utena-- are all wearing formal gowns, Juri is only in her student council uniform. At Nanami's jewelry party, she does wear a necklace specifically to upstage the piece Nanami is celebrating-- but she wears much more jewelry, in a much more ostentatious style, when she's with Miki in the privacy of the student council hangout. If out-showing Nanami was her primary goal, surely it would make more sense for her to go all out at the party. Instead, she wears one necklace--she has an excuse, it's to show up Nanami, she's just the trademark High School Mean Girl Pulling a Stunt, she can get away with one tiny trinket she actually wants to wear without it attracting the attention of men. If she wears a shirt that basically looks like an even plainer version of her student council uniform. If she wears pants exactly like the ones she wears every day, just in a different color. Not gender conforming enough to read as an invitation, not GNC enough to reveal herself by mistake.

She indulges herself with a grand entrance and a new, sparkly necklace at Nanami's party, but she makes a beeline for Miki the second it's over. If any boy saw the brief moment where she allowed herself to show off feeling beautiful and decided it meant he should possess her, maybe he'll assume she's already Miki's property & leave her be.

Juri doesn't change out of her ridiculously feminine, over-the-top nightgown when she goes wandering at night. We see her out roaming the campus in it twice, in two separate locations. There's no reason for her to do that, instead of putting her uniform back on to take her walk.

The moments where we see Juri in the nightgown are all moments where somebody is seeing Juri as her most unguarded, most authentic self-- the audience, Utena, Ruka.

It makes me think Juri decides to wear her nightgown when she goes out, when she thinks enough people will be sleeping to risk it, because she just wants the brief chance to dress like herself in public.

Intellectual property is the currency of the modern age. If you’ve got a brand, a mascot, a cute little doodle you did one day while you were bored at work, it is completely essential that your rights as a creator must be protected. Unfortunately, the way that those rights are protected is that you have to sell it to a giant corporation, which jealously hoards it for centuries after your death. Are you gonna get paid, at least? If you’re lucky, I guess.

If you have a regular job, like zookeeper or assassin, it’s unlikely that the bourgeoisie will continue to exploit you after your death. A dead zookeeper is only good for at most one more tiger feeding, for instance. Corporate artists are going to be admired, emulated, and profiteered from until the sun burns out or future executives figure out that they were weirdly and specifically hyper-racist after all.

Ever since there has been a creative industry, there have been rich people milling around the artists, trying to turn the droppings of their diseased minds into trading cards that can be offered to the shadowy beast that is global commerce. Back in medieval times, this was almost a friendly relationship: a rich person would come by, and pay you to make some shit out of marble. Chances are, they’d stop paying you and then have you murdered as you approached completion of the project, which is why artists evolved the ability to procrastinate, but that’s a whole other story.

Nowadays, making copies of something is a lot easier than going out and hiring a bunch of teenagers who can carve a replica of a marble statue. And that’s got the rich-person class in a tizzy. What does it mean to own some cool shit, if the person who made it can just make a bunch of copies of it and give it away for free to whoever asks for it? How can they be expected to derive some genuine, authentic joy from what is basically a selfless act of creative expression, without getting to charge money for it in all perpetuity? These are the questions of our age, but only because the rich people also control the machine that makes all the questions.

What’s the moral of the story, if you are a creative person selling your efforts to an enormous corporation? You have a duty to be super weird. Whatever is wrong with your brain is not wrong with the profiteers’, according to society, which means you have to be a little more creative in your subversive acts. The ideal goal is to render the thing unusable, like a General Motors product, after at most one generation of humanity. Not only are you getting revenge, but you’re helping future generations: they won’t have to write a sequel to your hit franchise, and can instead make weird shit of their own.

I love the concept of Shigeo/???% because, to me, he embodies the inevitability of self love. It is not always quick, it is not always easy, but it always comes in the end. You can let yourself be beaten down, broken, and not even try to save yourself or get up. You can convince yourself that you deserve it, that it must happen, and that you welcome its arrival. But there is an eternal, unkillable seed of stubbornness residing in the body that will try its fucking hardest to heal your wounds, to seek out pleasure, and keep you alive at all costs. There is something hallowed living in the body that will outlast the death of every goddamn star in the sky just to keep you safe. Because it loves you. Because it IS you. Mob has violently suppressed this part of himself for so long and let it build up and up and up through all of these near-death experiences and pain and torture. He let it get restless, afraid, and desperate, like a trapped animal; teeth bared, vicious, and alone. Shigeo loves Mob and IS Mob and Shigeo is tired of the suffering and the pain and ignoring every survival instinct he has. Ignoring the instinctual urge for justice and retaliation. Resisting his own need for happiness and relief.

When Mob is badly hurt—practically killed—and a breaking point is reached, with Shigeo crawling out of the prison of Mob’s heart and finally finally finally finding a release to the tension and the anxious, angry, devastated energy, he is hurting people. He is destroying property. He is Lashing Out at potential threats and old pains. He is protecting Mob at all costs, stuck in survival mode. Even then, with blood and destruction at his feet, worst nightmare realized, Mob still loves himself. At least a little bit. Because it is inevitable. It is built into the body. It is a requirement of being alive. It is cradling his face in its hands, bringing him closer and closer to the delicate hope of love.

He is staying alive, no matter what destruction awaits, because Shigeo loves himself and wants a second chance at authenticity and happiness, starting with Tsubomi. Against all odds, he desperately, incredibly, impossibly, amazingly still loves himself. And it brings him to his feet in the face of death itself.
