More Everything Forever

Astrophysicist Adam Becker knows a few things about science and technology – enough to show, in a new book called More Everything Forever that the claims that tech bros make about near-future space colonies, brain uploading, and other skiffy subjects are all nonsense dressed up as prediction:

Becker investigates the personalities, the ideologies, the coalitions, the histories, and crucially, the grifts behind such science fictional pursuits as infinite life-extension, space colonization, automation panic, AI doomerism, longtermism, effective altruism, rationalism, and conciousness uploading.

This is, loosely speaking, the bundle of ideologies that Timnit Gebru and Émile P. Torres dubbed TESCREAL (transhumanism, Extropianism, singularitarianism, (modern) cosmism, Rationalism, Effective Altruism, and longtermism):

While these are largely associated with modern Silicon Valley esoteric techbros (and the odd Oxfordian like Nick Bostrom), they have very deep roots, which Becker excavates – like Nikolai Fyodorov's 18th century "cosmism," a project to "scientifically" resurrect everyone who ever lived inside of a simulation:

In their modern incarnation, these ideas largely originate in science fiction novels. That is to say, they were made up and popularized by people like me, the vast majority of whom made no pretense of being able to predict the future or even realistically describe a path from the present to the future they were presenting. Science fiction is something between a card trick and a consensual con game, where the writer shows you just enough detail to make you think that the rest of it must be lurking somewhere in the wings. No one in sf has ever explained how consciousness uploading could possibly work, and neither have any of the advocates for consciousness uploading – the difference is that (most of) the sf writers know they're just making stuff up.

Becker's central question is how many "smart" people (some of them very smart and accomplished, others merely very certain that they are smart despite all evidence to the contrary) can mistake futuristic allegories made up by pulp writers for prophesy?

In answering this question, he uncovers a corollary of Upton Sinclair's famous maxim that "it is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it," namely, that "it is easy to get a person to believe something when doing so will make them feel good about themselves."

The beliefs that Becker explores in this book sometimes make the believers rich (like the AI grifters who run around shouting about AI taking over the world and turning us all into paperclips). Sometimes, they make their believers feel good about being selfish assholes (like longtermism, which holds that all the misery in the world today is worth it if you can make 24 heptillion hypothetical simulated people just a little happy in 10,000 years). Sometimes, they make their believers feel good about life after death, or eternal life – the same pitch that religions have been roping in followers with since the stone age.

What differentiates these beliefs from other faith-based claims is that their followers claim that they aren't operating on faith, but on science, reason and rationality. This is where the fact that Becker is a bona fide astrophysicist comes in. Not only is he personally qualified to debunk claims about space colonization, but he's also familiar with the rigorous process of scientific inquiry, and capable of consulting experts and listening to them. That's how he concludes, for example, that having your head cut off and frozen when you die is just a form of corpse mutilation, with a zero point zero zero zero zero percent chance of someone recovering your mind from your freezerburned brain.

Like his subjects, Becker has a complicated relationship with science fiction. He, too, enjoys the imaginative flights of the genre, its delightful thought-experiments, its gnarly moral conundra. I love these too. They make for a fascinating and often useful lens for understanding and challenging our own relationship with technology and our very humanity. Ultimately, Becker is exploring the difference between reading sf because it makes you think in new ways, and reading sf as a kind of prophetic text, and – crucially – he's asserting that it's perfectly possible to enjoy this stuff without organizing your moral life around hypothetical heptillions of virtual people living in the year 25,000; or, indeed, having your head cut off and frozen.

Opening a new AO3 Account

Because I often see people saying how hard it is to open an AO3 account when actually... it's not THAT complicated.

Like yes, when you first entered the site you'll be greeted with this.

If you wanna create a new account, you'd think that the only way to do it is by clicking that [Get invited!] button... right?

Thus, you'll end up with this page ^.

But yanno, since this invite request system is AUTOMATED, it will take some time for your invite code to be sent to you. I mean, just take a look and that last line on the above picture! And frankly, 4500 codes every 12 hours was not that bad really... if you compare it to when Ao3 has just started.

Even then...

DO YOU KNOW THAT THERE'S EVEN FASTER WAY TO GET AN AO3 INVITATION CODE? *

HOW, you ask?

Well, you can just ask ANY existing AO3 users if they have any extra invitation codes and have them give it to you. And it's not a very complicated process.

If you already became an AO3 user (and have some extra invitation code) but don't know how to give out the codes to friends who wanted it as well, then follow these steps.

Open your profile page, and look at your profile name.

There should be some buttons under your profile name, one of it would be the [Invitations] button. Click that to see the codes,

You'll be seeing a list of codes that you should automatically receive from AO3. If not, you could always request for it.

Like yes, if you need more codes, you can just click on the [Request Invitation] button. And if you want to send someone an invite code, you just enter the email address of the person you want to give the code to... and click Send, as the green arrow indicates.

Alternatively, you can just manually send the invite codes. Just go to [Manage Invitations]

Copy the link marked as [Copy and Use] and give the link to the person you want to give the code to. Important note tho, you HAVE to copy the actual link and not JUST the random bunch of numbers.

Because the link you've copied should lead you to THIS page.

Once you reach this page, you can just start opening your brand new AO3 account.

Likewise, if you've sent the codes thru the email, ask the person you've sent the codes to to check their inbox for the new mail containing the code. And then just click on the link provided.

*I said that this was 'much' faster since some people claimed that they didn't get the codes 'fast' enough, despite how nowadays the amount the server gives out the codes was a lot more compared to back then (which was like a few hundreds per day). So, I offered another option.

Cos yes, I shouldn't be the only one who still has a lot of codes leftover.

Meredith groaned, face buried in George’s pillow. “Mine called me Meredith Grey every time he spoke to me. Full name. Every time. It was like dating an automated voicemail.”

“Yeah, so now we’re claiming your bed for comfort,” Izzie declared, patting the mattress.

George sighed. He should’ve expected this. His bed had basically become their emotional support mattress.

He turned just in time to see you step inside, looking equally exhausted.

“Let me guess,” he said. “Bad date?”

You sighed. “He took me to a steakhouse and got offended when I ordered a salad. Then he told me I should ‘live a little’ and tried to feed me off his fork. When I said no, he pouted for the rest of the date.”

Izzie made a gagging noise. “Men are so embarrassing.”

You crossed your arms, scanning the room. “Is there any space left?”

Izzie and Meredith glanced at each other, then at the bed, where they had effectively sprawled across all of it.

You sighed. “Guess I’ll just go—”

George didn’t even think before he spoke.

“You can lay on me.”

The words hung in the air.

Your eyes met his, brows lifting slightly in surprise.

“I mean,” he stammered, ears burning, “only if you want to! No pressure. I just—there’s not a lot of room, and, um, I don’t mind, so…”

Meredith let out a muffled snort into the pillow. Izzie smirked.

You hesitated for only a second before shrugging. “Fine by me.”

Before George could process that, you were climbing onto the bed, shifting to settle right on top of him.

His brain short-circuited.

You were warm. And soft. And your head rested against his chest in a way that made his heart pound hard enough that you had to feel it.

“You’re comfy,” you murmured, adjusting slightly.

George made an embarrassingly high-pitched sound in response.

Izzie and Meredith giggled.

He cleared his throat, forcing himself to stay normal. “Uh. Good. Glad to be of service.”

Silence settled over the room, the three of you lying there in a comfortable pile.

And if George was maybe hyper-aware of every breath you took, or the way your fingers idly traced the hem of his shirt—well, that was his secret.

this isn't the first time we've seen evidence that the current climate of anti-trans panic in the US has largely been manufactured by (or at the very least, stoked by) a small number of conservative interest groups, but the leaked materials from this group do make it pretty clear that trans people are being used a wedge issue to increase republican turnout:

In a member briefing video, one of Ziklag’s spiritual advisers outlined a plan to “deliver swing states” by using an anti-transgender message to motivate conservative voters who are exhausted with Trump.

although it does seem like they believe their own rhetoric and aren't "just" willing to turn trans people into collateral damange:

Other internal Ziklag documents voice strong opposition to same-sex marriage and transgender rights. One reads: “transgender acceptance = Final sign before imminent collapse.”

and somehow this is only the tip of the iceberg here:

a charity funded by mega-wealthy christian donors who think that secular mega-wealthy donors are more generous than christians (much to unpack there lol) and want to close that gap

the fact that it's set up a tax-exempt 5013c org but 100% operating as a PAC, which according to a little group called the IRS is super duper illegal

general christian nationalist shit, including a belief that “the biblical role of government is to promote good and punish evil” and that “the word of god and prayer play a significant role in policy decisions"

using a tool called eagleAI that "claim[s] to use artificial intelligence to automate and speed up the process of challenging ineligible voters" in a bid to kick 100k+ voters off the rolls in swing states

a seven-pronged plan that extends into non-political avenues like the entertainment industry, like a goal to make 80% of movies produced either have a G or PG rating and offer a tidy moral

not pro ai or anything, just curious to know what you think. What is your argument against AI making the art process more accessible to people who can't draw.

Generative AI doesn't make the process of creating art easier or more accessible, it just does the process for you. It's not going to make you an artist. You feeding it complicated prompts doesn't change that. You'd be doing exactly the same thing if you commissioned someone, telling the artist you hired what you want them to make and giving feedback until you got the result you wanted. This is just an automated version of doing that. Kind of like how a calculator can make life easier if you struggle with math but you can't really claim to have math skills if you can't solve even a basic equation without it. And I'll be blunt, I don't really care that much if some random person is using it to make portraits of their OCs or something trivial like that. I think it's a bigger issue when corporations use it to cut back on human labor on a large scale. The reason I don't think it's a good tool for people who want to be artists has more to do with this: If you have an interest in being any kind of a skilled artist you have to actually develop the skill for yourself. If you're invested in the quality of what YOU make then you do need to practice and study. AI may get you results you can't achieve on your own but if you actually want to develop skills then you need to do the labor and make art. No one starts out good at it, some people have better instincts or more of an innate talent but every artist who's work you admire has spent some time studying and most, if not all, of them have drawn outside of their comfort zones, hit walls, experienced burnout, been discouraged and for every 1 good piece they show you there are 10 failures and unfinished WIPS behind it. Art is WORK. Even if you love it, even if you are good at it. And that work is not for everyone. No amount of shortcuts, tools, or supplements can make a competent artist of someone who is fundamentally disinterested in the labor of art. And not everyone is going to be able to learn how to draw well. Just like some people will never be good singers or some will never be good athletes. It's not a moral failing or an indication of laziness to not be good at something. But Gen AI cannot give you what you don't have. It's just a shortcut for hiring someone else to do what you can't.
