Fremen temporarily take over Arakeen and Carthag in a 6-player game of Dune. I had forgotten this - and I probably should have realized - but 6 players does make the game a *lot* longer. We’d been finishing our 4- and 5-player games in 3hr-ish. We had to call this one on time after 4hr and we really weren’t that close to finishing - we probably would have needed another 2hr or so (we were playing the rules from the new edition, which limit the game to 10 turns; in the old days of 15 turns, a game that went long could easily go 8hr). We called it a probable Guild win as the players were tapped out on turn 6 with the tanks totally filled up. Not sure how I feel about this. Dune has the reputation of being best for 6, but I felt the 4 and 5 player games went more smoothly and were more interesting. But it’s just a sample size of 1 at this point. Having all 6 distinct factions in play is definitely pretty cool, but someone is likely to get hammered early and not have a lot to do for an extended time. Anyway, still quite enjoying this and looking forward to the new edition, assuming it’s going to ship at some point here. One interesting major difference in the new edition from the WBC rules that most people seem to play: the rules go back to allowing you to give anyone spice at any time. Under the WBC house rules, you can only transfer spice in the collection phase. I *much* prefer the unrestricted transfers, although it does open up some weird sleazing of the CHOAM charity rules. But I think that small oddity is more than outweighed by the advantages of allies and friends being able to help cover unexpected expenses, or to make a variety of other deals. #bgg #boardgamegeek #boardgames #j2s #brettspiel #galeforce9 #avalonhillgames #dunetheboardgame https://www.instagram.com/p/B2u-cKnhPkx/?igshid=1xw3ll2hmzom0

Betrayal at House on the Hill,  balanced or unbalanced?  We brought it back to the table and agreed that its unpredictability makes it a favorite at Nerdz Garage. The game designer's built smooth, swift, yet unpredictable gameplay. Once the Haunt is triggered and there is a shift from co-op to semi co-op midway through the game, is intriguing and feels like you have started a whole new game. There are 50 different Haunts in the game and with the random player choices, it would be rare ( if possible) to play the same game twice. The scenarios we have played were compelling. The luck of the draw has changed favor each time we played, whether we turned good or evil. We found it to be a simplified version of Dungeons and Dragons in a spooky house with a twist. We think it's balanced and an epic adventure where one of us gets to be a traitor! . . betrayalathouseonthehill #avalonhillgames #nerdzgarage #tabletopgames #boardgamegeek #boardgamesofinstagram #bggcommunity #boardgames #nerdzboardgaming #bgg #analoggames #dungeonsanddragons #D&D #roleplaying #rpg (at Nerdz Garage) https://www.instagram.com/nerdzgarage/p/ByujMHaBP5o/?igshid=1lxjtos7pzttz

My Top 30 Games My number 18 is Betrayal at House on the Hill By @avalonhillgames @hasbro Betrayal at House on the Hill is a 1-6 player game that starts as a cooperative exploration game but as it progresses and the Haunt is triggered 1 character turns traitor and becomes the bad thing we need to defeat to win. This was the first game I played that introduced me to the hobby board games world. I had never played a game like this that had exploration and story and things that I normally got from video games. I had a blast gearing up my character and anticipating the Haunt to begin. Then the game gets turned upside down and the traitor leaves the table with a book that explains their new role. Then other players read a separate book with limited information on what's going on and an objective of our own on how to win. Then the game continues as the survivors and the traitor face off. There are 50 different Haunts in the base game and 50 more if you get the expansion. There is so much variety that you hardly play the same Haunt twice in a row, although you can get a Haunt you have done before if you play enough times. The Haunts aren't always perfectly balanced and can seem one sided at times which is the games biggest criticism but over all I still find the game to be a blast to play and enjoyable even when those under balanced Haunts do come up. I owe my love of modern board games to this game so for that it will always be a game I cherish and will never leave my collection for that reason. Have you played Betrayal? Do you love it or hate it? Let me know in the comments. (at Wonder Lake, Illinois) https://www.instagram.com/p/CidFO41OK-P/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Dusting off the British in Up Front. Most of the personalities in Up Front and (A)SL are named after playtesters or designers, so it’s kind of hilarious to see the British squad so chock full of now well-know designers and gamers with slightly unusual names (here, Moon, Tresham, and Vasey). One of the interesting (unsettling?) things about revisiting this games is the way that there really isn’t any way to avoid the intimacy of the violence; when your team gets caught in a stream and gunned down by machine gun fire, it’s hard to look away and not recognize what’s going on here - men are getting caught and having their lives violently ended in a way that’s ultimately capricious. Up Front! battles are significantly bloodier than real combat was at this scale I think and squads will stoically persevere and continue to be aggressive well past the point where most small units would call it a day. But it does seem to me to convey how most WWII casualties occurred: units getting caught between positions, or ambushed by an enemy that they weren’t aware of didn’t think could hit them, or hung out in the open by confusing terrain, and usually by automatic weapons. Like many of the best wargames from Avalon Hill in this incredible decade or so of their history (~1980-1995), one can quibble with details, but the way it manages to evoke the overall feel and sense of the period and topic is pretty impressive. As I mentioned, after probably a two-decade lay-off, it’s been really good to get this to the table again. Looking forward to moving on to some of the later scenarios. I know a lot of people just play Meeting of Patrols, City Fight, and Jungle Meeting Engagement, but there are a lot of good scenarios in the mix I feel. #boardgamegeek #bgg #avalonhillgames #upfrontgame https://www.instagram.com/p/B9JJjIahmAm/?igshid=1umpz6cioewt2

When the Haunt conditions are met, then one player turns against the rest. I remember just loving the exploration and the excitement when rolling for the Haunt...cause I had no idea what was going to come next. I was hooked and knew I needed to play more games like this. Titan: The Arena. Most of my game pictures are upside down because I'm usually explaining games, so I put them facing the other players. I've usually enjoyed this game, but it's been quite a while since I played and it just wasn't speaking to me tonight - it just felt a bit chaotic. Not sure if it's just finally passed its sell-by date or if I'll enjoy it more next time. There definitely is more to the game than it appears, but it's also true that there sometimes isn't a ton of control. Anyway, we'll see. #bgg #boardgamegeek #avalonhillgames
