Avarekalu Huli Saru Recipe 
the recipe for Avarekalu Huli Saru:
Ingredients:
1 cup Avarekalu (Hyacinth beans)
1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped
2-3 green chillies, finely chopped
1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
1 small tomato, finely chopped
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chilli powder
1 tbsp tamarind pulp
2 cups water
2 tbsp oil
Salt to taste
Coriander leaves for garnishing

For masala:
1/2 cup grated coconut
1 tbsp coriander seeds
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
1/4 tsp mustard seeds
5-6 dried red chillies
1 inch cinnamon stick
2-3 cloves
2-3 peppercorns
1 tsp oil
Instructions:
Rinse and soak the avarekalu in water for about 4-5 hours or overnight. Drain the water and keep aside.
Dry roast all the ingredients listed under masala until fragrant and lightly browned. Let it cool down and grind into a fine paste with a little water. Keep aside.
In a pressure cooker, heat oil and add chopped onions, green chillies and ginger-garlic paste. Saute until onions are soft and translucent.
Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and salt. Mix well and cook until tomatoes are soft and mushy.
Add the avarekalu and mix well. Add the ground masala paste, tamarind pulp and 2 cups of water. Mix well and adjust salt if needed.
Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles on medium flame or until avarekalu is cooked.
Once the pressure releases, open the lid and give a good stir. Add water if needed to adjust consistency.
Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or ragi mudde.
Enjoy your delicious Avarekalu Huli Saru.

Snaps from traditional avarebele mela 2019 ( avarekalu food festival) held at VV puram food street , Bangalore. I went on Monday ( Last day of this 12 day festival) for the first time in my 12+ years of Bangalore life 😉. Even though the place is crowded and had to wait in a long queue for getting each dish, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the making of each dish. I was allowed to take few videos as well. I ate avarebele dosa and avarekalu akki roti served with hitikida bele saaru 😍. Scroll to see the pictures.Iam planning to make the same in my kitchen 😉. Bought few avarekalu sweets like Halwa, mysorepak, gulab jamun, jilebi , Chikki and snacks like avarebele mixture, kodubele, nippat to home. All at a reasonable price 👍. I couldn't try avarekalu ice cream as the machine was faulty. Bangaloreans must visit this mela atleast once. If you have missed this festival in VV puram, no worries! You still have a chance in RT nagar on 11,12 and 13th of this month. They are also planning to conduct in HSR layout on 24, 25, 26th.
