What a weird drink. Also only the second pop-top can I’ve had in my life, which probably contributed to my sense of weirdness, but yeah, I should've known; awamori is STRONG, in terms of both flavor and alcohol content. Okinawans go hard. This tastes like coffee, metal, and engine oil. It got me drunk extremely quickly, but in a way that nobody was happy about. Cute can design though!

The random players and strangers in the various parties I'm a part of in FFXIV are thankfully very understanding when I die in the middle of a dungeon.
It feels like it's happening more often nowadays, almost exclusively because I end up stuck inside of overlapping AOEs. I'm struck down by the center portion of venn diagrams being weaponized against me.
Also got this over on twitterrrr

I can’t stop thinking about the kinda shit the people of Uzushiogakure would eat, though? Their cuisine, their food traditions, etc… Obviously a lot of seafood (likely both raw and cooked alike), and given how connected they are to the sea, and with the idea of them Needing more salt than others, I could see a popular tea for them being konbu-cha (kelp infused in hot water and sometimes salt, a rather savory and apparently salty tea!), but what about specifics?
Obviously they’d probably eat a lot of sushi and sashimi, but what kind? Do you think they’d often eat poisonous and lethal fish and other ocean life, what with the god killing thing? Would it become a common delicacy for them to eat things like fugu (a highly toxic blowfish, if prepared incorrectly) with little prep, even or especially raw? Is that toxicity just like zesty seasoning to them, or a flavor most can’t comprehend?
What’s the more popular cooking method in Uzushio- Steaming, grilled, frying, something else? Why would it be that popular, and what would work best in that environment?
What about alcohol- Do they favor sake? Shōchū? Something else? And other drinks- What kind of teas would they have?
Just! I’m sorry for rambling but I’m a Nerd and Uzushiogakure gets me Every Time.
Don't apologize! Details like this are something I get caught up in too!!
I think I've said it before but when it comes to relating Uzushio to a real place I, personally, tend to very loosely model Uzushio off of Okinawa.
So you have that influence plus the general nature I tend to give the Uzumaki.
There were other Clans too on Uzushio of course, but the Uzumaki ruled from time immemorial so their preferences influenced things a great deal.
For beverages: Konbu-cha served either plain or with Uzushio brown sugar for those who want a hint of sweetness. Water, obviously, though serving it with slices of fresh fruit and/or sprigs of mint mixed in is also common. Various fruit juices from native fruits are also popular, especially with children. The Uzumaki also have been known to drink sea water both casually and medicinally as they require higher alt levels than other Clans do. Flower teas are also popular, specifically fire-lily and hibiscus teas.
Traditional alcohol on Uzushio is awamori, which is distilled (like shochu) instead of brewed. The Uzumaki are known for making and consuming a specific type of awamori called hanazake which tends to be at least 120-proof and flammable.
Like you said seafood is the backbone of the cuisine in Uzushio with Clans like the Uzumaki having the ability to eat even the most poisonous of fair without too much in the way of preparation.
Fugu, stone and lion fish, as well as certain sharks are all common foods for Uzumaki that most other Clans do not consume regularly if ever. Young Uzumaki are often fed higher concentrations of normally poisonous dishes to help them develop a healthy constitution.
Crab is a common meat source as well, since the Uzushio spider crabs are prolific, breed quickly and easily, and grow to unsettling sizes.
Sea turtle used to be a common dish too but Something Happened in the past and Uzushio stopped all consumption of sea turtle meat.
Pig is also a very very common meat in Uzushio as the island is the perfect place for wild boar to flourish. There was an entire Clan, in fact, who was in charge of the cultivation of Uzushio's boar population.
Steaming and hot stone grilling are the most popular cooking styles in Uzushio. There's also an abundance of hot and cold soups. Frying tends to be reserved for desserts and specialty dishes.
Bitter melons, taro, ube, coconuts, papaya, and bamboo shoots are also also common.

Mere seconds before boarding is announced at the airport, Satoru's phone buzzes with a text.
[ OK. You have a change of clothes here. ]
There's a picture attached. It's a fridge with its door held open, the shelves inside stacked with cans of melon and strawberry flavored soda. A cheesecake can be seen in the back, too simple to be store bought. Painted fingernails are barely visible in the corner. A few minutes later, a second message arrives.
[ ♡( ◡‿◡ ) ]
Despite not having been an overnight mission in Okinawa, Satoru's carry-on luggage was packed to bursting. He'd made the most of his hours on the island he'd had available, finishing his mission at record speeds before hitting the streets.
The look he'd gotten going through security had been quite something; half his luggage was crammed full of freshly picked kunebo mandarins. The other half was a fight between a styrofoam-packed bottle of vintage Awamori, a sealed container oozing with cursed energy, and the half-empty box of Kippan he was planning to finish on the plane ride back. He was quite pleased with how much he had managed to accomplish; If the impromptu mission was going to cut precious hours into his and Suguru's time, he'd been determined not to go home empty-handed.
Satoru had texted Suguru the instant he'd jumped onto a couch in the VIP lounge, laying back with his feet on the upholstery, unaware of the dirty look shot his way by the cleaning staff working just on the other side of the room.
The reply he shoots back at Suguru's message is almost instantaneous, as if he'd just been staring at the messaging app the whole time. Which he definitely was, minimized to half the screen as he scrolled social media.
[ yay ] [ ! ] [ i'll see u soon then ] [ <attached image of a cat meme> ] [ <attached image of the ocean waters of okinawa> ] [ we should come here ] [ <attached image of a selfie. it looks like he's up in a tree, sweating through his shirt from the heat> ] [ but during winter ]
The boarding call sounds, and he heads out with his luggage in one hand and his phone in the other, smoothly continuing to text with a single thumb.
[ its way too hot rn ] [ the fruit is rlly good tho ] [ theres some nice remote spots on the outer islands ] [ <attached image of a meme> ] [ <attached image of a meme> ] [ and the seafood!!! ] [ <attached image of a big plate of sashimi> ] [ we could catch our own fish ] [ some umibudo and grouper and ] [ urchin would be amazing ]
He smiled as Suguru responded with the simple emoticon.

Tattoo Analysis: Shimabukuro Rikiya
Everything in Rikiya's tattoo reflects his love and dedication to his hometown and the people that live there.
(Tattoo Breakdown)
Tumblr media
Being that the eye is such a small detail to be the only bit unfinished, I am guessing that Rikiya had his tattoo done in small bites at a time over a number of years. That is assuming the artist didn't just drop dead mid-session. The Nakahara family isn't exactly flush with cash, so I can see him doing it in more affordable chunks. The eye is a key part of emotional expression, and as 3’s story unfolds Rikiya grows from a brash, impulsive kid to a source of emotional support to Kiryu and Morning Glory. He learns to listen, and ultimately to give his life for the people he loves.
Tumblr media
Snakes protect sacred places, and Rikiya gives everything he has to protect the orphanage, Kiryu, and all of Okinawa. Okinawa is definitely a sacred place in Y3. It’s arguably where we see Kiryu at his happiest. We are shown its natural beauty, how peaceful it is, and the kindness of its citizens. It is a safe haven for Kiryu, Haruka, the Morning Glory kids, and Nakahara’s daughter.
Tumblr media
Harming a snake is said to bring curses, and Rikiya’s death does incur the wrath of Kiryu, who spends most of 3 trying to be a peaceful civilian who stays out of yakuza affairs until Rikya's death forces his hand.
Tumblr media
Also Habushu (Viper infused Awamori- a distilled rice alcohol unique to Okinawa ) is used to enhance male virility. I don't know what to do with this information. There are also reports of the snakes used in the drink surviving the process and "reviving" when removed from the booze.
Tumblr media
Windmill palms are real servants of the people as far as plant life goes. Useful for making medicine, tools, clothes, and wax. Rikiya is a simple, small town boy who loves his home and does everything to support the people living there, often directly. He helps people anyway he can, from supporting a girl who moved away from Okinawa who lost her way in life, to playing the heel in a wrestling match to boost the mood of a sick kid.
Tumblr media
More of an anecdote than symbolism, but while I was researching palm trees for Rikiya’s tattoo description, I was struggling to find much about them. They don’t really come up in any myths or legends that I could find. However, on a gardening-based message board I saw a discussion where a few people were discussing that some Japanese people, when questioned, seemed to believe that there are no palm trees native to mainland Japan. They are almost solely associated with more beach-y locals, despite there being several species native to the main island. Once again this was an extremely isolated conversation, but something could be said about the parallels to a native plant that is seen as foriegn, and Okinawa’s Japan-but-not relationship to the rest of the country that is discussed a bit in 3.

AI photography and video is actually getting better now, so trust me, I'm going to be fact checking all my information (I was before but now I have more reason to do so) and NOT have a panic attack over the inevitable abuse and artist devaluation of AI content (no promises). Anyway, Habushu or 'snake whiskey' is an awamori-based liquer exclusive to Okinawa, Japan. There is a fucking snake in it. It contains a dead pit viper that has been fermented in the whiskey for at least several months, which neutralizes the venom and is often the main selling point of the whiskey. Folklore tradition says its a pain reliever, cure for mild symptons like exhaustion, or even an aphrodisiac. At the end of the day, it is safe to drink and has a "bold and robust flavor to the whiskey with hints of medicinal herbs and a slightly sweet undertone". And also has a snake in it.
[Animal Fact Anon]
I'm aware this is a thing!!
Alcohol with snakes is actually pretty common in a lot of parts of Asia/SEA. My dad once had snakewine in Vietnam! :]
I'd drink it tbh. I like the taste of snake (which is to say it doesn't have much flavour at all. It's kinda like whitefish in the flavour department)

Diary of Two Awamori Entry 02:
While traveling in Gridania today, there laid an unconscious, seemingly dead man beside the Central Shroud's Aetheryte. I attempted to raise him twice - one hour prior to this photo, and then once again moments before this photo.
Mayhaps my friend Noa struck him earlier in the day with her car.
