Happy WBW! What are holidays like in your world? Are they religious? Political? Historical? Seasonal? How do your characters feel about certain ones? How are they celebrated?

What are holidays like in your world? Are they religious? Political? Historical? Seasonal?

Yes 🧍‍♂️ LOL I'll give one example of each otherwise we will be here forever 😅

Religious: Orran's Day, the Oepus equivalent of Christmas, though primarily celebrated by humans because Orran is their patron god.

Political: Cessation Day, this is a holiday observed by Holtepians to mark the day when The Emperor's War came to an end. This was the bloodiest civil war in all of the Empire's history so it was widely instituted thereafter as a day of reflection and mourning for those lost.

Historical: Kava's Day, the Holtepian celebration of the day that Kava is believed to have ascended to heaven once her work on Oepus was done. Also has a religious aspect to it because Kava is the matron god of the Lizardfolk who inhabit The Holtep Empire.

Seasonal: Solas Week, occurs in first week of Sun's Dawn, meant to celebrate bonds between people. Has a political aspect because it was originally instituted as a holiday by Emperor Axeses II and his wife, Empress and Allmother Mazvah of The Pale Kingdom after she weaved him the famous and first ever, Solas Cord. That celebration week was also selected because the holiday of Solas, is in that week and it was her favorite holiday.

How do your characters feel about certain ones?

I'll answer this in the context of the ones I've shared!

Mariel loves Orran's Day! She really likes wrapping presents 🥺 She also really likes Solas Week, she loves the meaning behind it all 💙

Axtapor doesn't care much for holidays. In his mind they're a good excuse to get drunk in the name of celebrating but he will observe them with some respect, especially Cessation Day, if he's around Lizardfolk kin.

Fay doesn't celebrate any. She thinks they're mostly a waste of time.

Wilkes observes Cessation Day with great respect. He led the battalion that ended The Emperor's War and its how he came to acquire his moniker of Son of the Moon, so he takes it very seriously. He usually spends this day alone remembering the men and women lost in that time.

Lexlar and Hartim: The celebrate all Lizardfolk holidays. They are more connected to The Holtep Empire than Axtapor is because they didn't leave it until later in their lives than he did. Cessation Day in particular hits a sore spot for them because they were kids when the war began (this is covered in Man O' War) so it shaped a lot of their pivotal life experiences, like their ikismal or coming of age ceremony.

How are they celebrated?

It's kind of across the board! Some are celebrated by exchanging gifts, like Orran's Day. Others are celebrated by feasting like Kava's Day. Some have festivals and parades like Solas Week and Orran's Day, respectively. And others are more meant for remembrance and reflection like Cessation Day and Solas Day itself.

actually more on this now. hope and rage being opposites on the wheel makes the hamster wheel in my brain go turbo speed, but not in the sense of rage being the absence of hope or vice versa.

look at the wheel. space and time are opposite each other. space is not the absence of time, and neither is time the absence of space. moreso they are two axises (axi? axes? axeses??) of one experience. space is where we inhabit, and time is how long we inhabit.

look at the wheel again. begin to hear the hamster wheel ramming up as you consider opposite aspects as complimentary ones, where both are needed to contextualize an experience.

i have many thoughts on how the aspect wheel is arranged. more on this later.

Wrap Weekends #5: Nissan Skyline GT-R (BNR32)

Wrap Weekends #5! a special R32 Skyline i made for a really good friend of mine, Exaline - eye-catching in its own right.

when he got a macro lens once he took pictures of one of his prized possessions, a model of a R32 Skyline GT-R. it had the Reebok livery, but i wanted it to be something different, something that i can attribute to him. this livery is based off of a livery concept i found on Pinterest, and later on their Flickr, made by Axesent. i imported the colorful stripes of their artwork to the colorful Palm City streets, of course with a few personal touches here and there and the odd tweak to fit the game's wrap editor.

Absolutely! I have this REALLY long doc covering what it is, how it came to be, etc, which is very info dump-y that I won't post here because it's just way too much. Maybe I'll post it if anyone is interested in reading it. So I'll use excerpts from AASOAF 1 & 2 to help! Putting this under a cut bc apparently, it turned out long anyway T_T

Where it came from:

After all, who wouldn’t swoon at the tale of Axeses The Second, who braved the mighty dragon, Cirit, to rescue his gentle lizard priestess, Mother Mazvah? Once she was freed, she became not only a style icon, but became known for being a giver of elegant parties and a master financier. Somehow the Kingdom made money when she threw parties, and because of that, she was able to be a very generous benefactor of many orphanages all throughout the territories under their rule. She was so well loved by the people of the Pale Kingdom, that they instituted a week-long celebration of Solas, her favorite holiday, to be filled with only festivals and merriment.

How it is celebrated:

Nightly masquerades filled with games, dancing, music, fireworks, food, and lots of booze!

How it concludes:

Weaving a cord with someone was no small thing; in fact, some didn’t participate in the weaving ceremony at all, despite it being the way that Solas Week should be concluded. The tradition stemmed from Mother Mazvah gifting a handwoven charm to her beloved Axeses on the day of Solas itself. It was braided using only the finest of silk ribbons and made to be several feet long so he could wear it around his shoulders whenever he rode into battle. He adored the gesture and the cord so much that instead of weaving a new one to give her, he proposed that they should simply add to the one she’d made. So, each year the two added to it on Solas Day, and by the time they passed, the cord had grown to be well over one hundred feet long. It was used to bind their coffins together when they were interred, so they could remain with one another even in their eternal rest, becoming the physical manifestation of their bond. The practice was immediately adopted across all of Oepus, not just for the embodiment of romantic love but for other types of bonds too. However, because cords were representative of bonds, they must always be weaved in pairs, or else they would bind nothing. Between friends, a cord could mean strength and happiness for a more prosperous friendship. Between family members, it could represent care and kindness as a reminder always to treasure one another.

And one final tidbit!

And between lovers like Axtapor and I…needless to say, it was special, monumental even, because, in many parts of Oepus, including my home island of Naren, it was the way that couples announced their intentions of marriage. Did he know that?

Oh man, the peoples of Oepus know how to have a good time! They do all sorts of things, but here is a list to make it a little easier to read.

Visit an alehouse, smoking den, and in some areas, wineries

Go dancing at taverns and inns (there is a whole underground scene that a certain minor but not so minor character in AASOAF 1 is privy to!)

Go out to eat at a nice restaurant or go for a cozy meal at a local mom-and-pop type place (note, if you go to a fancy restaurant, don't take Axtapor with you, he might disembowel the waiter)

Go see a play, opera, or other stage-type production. This includes the circus and puppet shows! (take Mariel for this one, she's never been to play before, but she's always wanted to go 🥺)

Participate in the many festivals celebrated all around Oepus (the biggest is Solas Week, a celebration of bonds between all people)

Go on hikes, camping, and hunting (definitely take Axtapor along for this one!)

Go swimming in rivers, lakes, streams, and oceans (avoid the lakes that you might find in the Holtep Empire, they'll burn you alive)

Visit libraries, curiosity shops, and even fortune tellers! (Wilkes is your man for this one, he knows where to find the rarest and most coveted books!)

And if you prefer something a little less surface level, there are brothels, fighting dens and pits, illegal chariot racing (chariots are considered weapons of war, hence illegal for civilian use), and bloodsport of other kinds (Fay is your best guide here, but be sure to hold on to your stomach!)
