Hello! Um I know it's been a few months since you said people could ask you more questions on your tgaa thoughts, but I was hoping to ask about your baskerzieks and genshinxwife ones. Like how they met, or what their last in person convos went like before each couple separated/died, etc, bc I really adore your Lady B & Mrs. Asougi designs! They deserved first names 😭

Also I'd love to hear your genklint/ville thoughts too if you care to share those!

ALSO I wanted to say you're 100% correct that if Kazuma & Klint ever actually met good ending au Kazuma would think he's the most annoying person alive. It's funny if genklint is platonic or romantic too, it's like Herlock Sholmes is right there and instead Kazuma thinks his dad's bf (best friend OR boyfriend lol) is significantly worse. HI i love to yap and to yap about dgs especially so you're good haha <3 i'm the kind of person who needs to be asked tbh bc i tend to be self conscious/doubt myself so questions are always super appreciated 🥹💗 this post got LONG so i'm going to put it under a break to spare anyone who's just here for art or trying to look at memes during their lunch break

TL;DR: klint and primrose were engaged as kids but it was broken off upon his parents' death, it was renewed when he earned prestige as a prosecutor; their last conversation was when primrose forced him to confess his crimes to her but she'd started having doubts months ago; in my favorite hc, gkv never pursued one another beyond dropping hints here and there but because i am bisexual i also want them to have fun; genshin and yukari met by chance as teens and genshin had to convince his father to let them marry each other after finding out she was pregnant; he could never say his last words to her because writing about the professor's identity could've endangered her and kazuma.

first of all thank you so much, it makes me so happy when people enjoy my designs and characterizations for lady baskerville and mrs asougi!! for clarity, i'll be calling them by the names i gave them in this post, primrose and yukari respectively.

klint and primrose's engagement was decided by their parents and they met as children- i think they were probably feeling awkward around each other for a while since children don't really care about such things (right..?) and primrose actually chose to spend her time reading when her father would take her to visit, and she might've even been more interested in talking/playing with barok because there wouldn't be the daunting idea of an engagement looming on the horizon lol. eventually, she and klint do grow closer and come to consider each other friends thanks to him putting in a lot of effort to make her feel welcome and also have more fun (she finds him boring- i characterize klint as having been a very serious and dutiful child, though he does play with and dote on his brother).

when the van zieks parents die in my hc, losing their life in a fire specifically, primrose's father chooses to cancel their engagement because he doubts klint can suitably provide for his daughter- a cruel but logical decision as klint is just fourteen years old with no backing or achievements. as an aside, the fire is declared to be an unfortunate accident but klint silently believes it was premeditated- this incident contributes to him considering prosecution as a career. out of care for his brother, he never brings up this idea to barok.

still, primrose is a very clever child who's acutely aware that her father's doting is a form of control (such as making her wear beautiful, white clothes to easily find out if she's been sneaking out, which i think i talked about before), and she insists on meeting klint either at his estate or in the city while they both (and occasionally barok) wear disguises/common clothes. the latter option allows them to meet people outside of their social caste, and to develop a sympathy for them from an early age which also contributes to klint's growing bitterness towards other nobles. throughout his struggle to be taken seriously by these men in spite of his age, primrose continuously encourages him and even spies on her father's meetings with other gentlemen to then report to him, and this continues in their adult life with her reporting rumors and "gossip" from other ladies about their own husbands (with perhaps dire consequences in the long run, haha...)

primrose has ambitions of her own, though, many of which are philanthropic in nature and stem from guilt at being born in a wealthy household to a father who does not care about people other than his own. they are difficult to achieve as an unmarried woman (or even as a woman in general), as her father would never greenlight her ideas, and as such she becomes enraged with klint when he allows the engagement to be dispelled due to believing she would ultimately "be happier with someone else" when it would effectively condemn any ounce of freedom she could have. from primrose's perspective, klint is the only candidate for marriage because he actually respects her and understands her as a person.

their engagement was eventually reinstated following klint's multiple achievements, chiefly when he made a name for himself as an extremely prolific prosecutor and primrose's father couldn't really object to it (ha) anymore. when i researched, i learned that men in the victorian era would commonly get married in their thirties once their careers were established, and i especially like that for this couple because it means that genshin could've attended their wedding. (it's also amusing to picture klint pitching him as the best man while primrose is firmly in barok's camp and they have a silly spat about that, haha. but ngl i prefer genshin as their best man because it was tradition that the best man would drive the married couple to their month long honeymoon directly after the ceremony so. he could stay behind a little while if you catch my meaning. teehee)

on the topic of genklintville, my ultimate preference/personal "canon" is that they never outright acted upon their romantic or sexual interests in one another although the tension was clearly there. but like any bisexual on the internet, i like to indulge a little bit, as shown in my previous paragraph hehe. i like to imagine a kind of kinship between genshin and primrose as they are interested in similar literature and share a similar sense of humor as well (chiefly teasing klint- in a deadpan manner for genshin). klint and primrose tend to dote on genshin in a way they think is discreet, because they can sense his loneliness at being apart from his family even though he generally doesn't voice it, but as we all know genshin isn't a fool and it leaves him quite flustered haha. genshin also relates to klint in the way that they are both heirs to something "greater than them" (the asogi clan/the van zieks heritage) and sometimes yearn to break away from it which might contribute to why genshin left for london if the first place. i'd like to add that if i draw genklint without primrose present, it's taking place with her knowledge and consent, though them being pushed to cheating due to increasing stress or suchlike circumstances is an interesting angle- it's just not something i see myself making at present. though now saying that has made me think about the ways it could be fun to explore the way klint's lying and gaslighting keeps piling up, so what's one more lie? so i'd be interested in reading a story that would attest to his guilt from committing the act and his gaslighting towards not only his wife but also to himself, hmm. the best way that i can put it is that if i'm to explore gk without the v, she must be a relevant character because i'm not about to discard a canon female love interest to focus solely on the yaoi lmao.

now for genshin and yukari, or genyu for short as i like to call it in my head (lol)... there's a lot to cover here too 😵‍💫 some of this, particularly the stuff concerning ayame, is still undecided on but i thought the more context the better!

to understand their dynamic, it feels important to state/repeat my headcanons about the asogi clan aka genshin's immediate family beyond her and kazuma, which were mentioned here. but to summarize, they are very patriarchal, strict, and the type to suppress their emotions. genshin is his father's illegitimate child, and his real mother is... hm, well, she won't ever appear in my art because it's suitable for her character, but she's a high ranking courtesan, aka "oiran", and therefore pregnancy/being a mother could bring shame to her and likely ruin her livelihood, because they are meant to project the image of being unattainable both in appearance.. and price. her disappearing for some months to a year wouldn't be all that suspicious as few men can even afford to meet her.

because the oiran brings the House where she works good money, they help her cover up her pregnancy and her son's existence by sending him to live with his father as soon as possible. once, genshin tries to visit his mother, but he is turned away. in short, his first experience was to be abandoned by someone who was supposed to love him. i think this backstory also serves to give reason to his name (written with the kanji 'shadow' and 'truth') because he is a truth meant to be hidden by the government. if you think about his father giving him that name, it becomes quite sad and implies shame for bringing his son into the world. i think it would also justify the personality i like for him, which is more reserved and serious than how i portray the rest of the visiting trio (with a boisterous but ambitious seishiro and a downtrodden but shy and earnest yuujin), and with a greater disposition for being suspicious... which is naturally a good thing for a detective.

genshin's father's wife lost her life to an illness some years prior to genshin integrating into the asogi clan, which is why he sought comfort from the oiran. to avoid unsavory rumors and to preserve both women's reputation, syoma (genshin's father) forbids his son from venturing outside of the house - paralleling primrose's childhood, which they could bond over later in life - until he turns a certain age. he's the dark sheep of the clan, to make it short. it's by sneaking out as a child that he meets seishiro, and then yukari who is accompanying ayame.

as an aside, i want to add that while syoma holds misogynistic beliefs, he still feels a sense of responsibility so he does eventually pay off the oiran's debt in the end- not that she's particularly grateful since he led her on and made her promise not to abort his child without ever planning to marry her. not a great guy, but def a fun character to write. those are things genshin deduces in his teenage years, and he swears to never become like his father.

as for yukari, her family history is also nebulous, and i don't know if i even want to establish her circumstances before meeting ayame and genshin because i like the meta irony of those details remaining unknown to us just as they were unknown to those around her outside of how she is tied to other people. ayame's friend, genshin's wife, kazuma's mother- never her own person. she reaches a breaking point during genshin's absence, but i won't go into detail about that for now because it's part of a long project of mine. what i can say about her is that she does housework for ayame's family in exchange for room and board, but she's not categorized as a servant because ayame cherishes her, a privilege that makes her feel awkward at times.

genshin fell for her due to her frank and joyful approach to life which was so different from the outlook he was raised on, and she piqued his curiosity with her unusual and often "silly", but free, behavior. he has the utmost respect for her, which is why as much as i like gkv and think it could work in a modern au with yukari's inclusion/approval + rapid methods of communication, i think realistically genshin wouldn't have the heart to start anything with someone else when she is waiting for his every letter so far away. he wouldn't be able to read the expression on her face, and she could easily lie about being okay with it.

in this wikipedia article about marriage in japan in the edo period (1600-1868), it reads: "Members of the household were expected to subordinate all their own interests to that of the [household], with respect for an ideal of filial piety and social hierarchy. [...] Marriages were duly arranged by the head of the household, who represented it publicly and was legally responsible for its members, and any preference by either principal in a marital arrangement was considered improper."

you might've guessed where i'm going with this, but genshin's father had already chosen a wife for him, and that person was ayame, who is from a 'good' family. obviously that marriage didn't go through with yukari becoming pregnant at 18 or 19 (!!), and syoma capitulated to genshin's request that he be given permission to marry his girlfriend which only further strained his relationship with his father further. as for ayame, she was fortunate that the man she was interested in was studying medicine, and therefore struggled less for her family to accept yuujin as her husband. but for yukari, although she knows genshin doesn't love ayame, there's always that nagging feeling that she was the "wrong" choice. after all, she has to witness the interactions between genshin and his family every day, and her presence is often the source of tension. her only rock after ayame's death and genshin's departure is her son, who starts rejecting spending time with her as he grows older because, well, he's a teenager (something i want to expand on in that project i mentioned).

in yukari's case, she was never able to read her husband's last words as even writing about the professor's identity could endanger hers and kazuma's lives, but perhaps genshin had promised he would briefly return at the half-way point of his stay overseas and then ended up having to break that promise by choosing to investigate the professor killings before eventually losing his life. yukari's feelings of helplessness were confirmed as the truth in her eyes then.

as for primrose and klint's last conversation, it's been sitting in my wips for a while LOL. i def think she had her suspicions, and when she finally gathered her courage to confront him, he broke down and told her the truth. i've revised this comic and especially its dialogue so many times that i don't even know if i like it anymore, please pray for me 😅

this made me laugh LMAO honestly kazuma would be so petty about it meanwhile i feel like he'd get along super well with the man's own wife 😂 i also think that as an adult kazuma would admire his father less and even be a bit of a tsundere lol, but yeah in a No One Dies/Good Ending AU(tm) he'd probably resent genshin a little for leaving him and his mother, whose struggles he witnessed firsthand for ten years. hell, maybe he does resent him in the current circumstances even if it's not the dominant emotion when it comes to his father, it of course being grief... still. lord van zieks get your paws off my dad!! 🙄💢 also if genshin starts reciprocating the attention kazuma might start killing LOL

Hey there!

Well, for starters, she is never from Konoha. In an “everything is good, nothing bad ever happens AU” in which she’s potentially born in Konoha as her branch of the family never abandons the village following Tobirama’s rule… I think she probably would’ve gotten along with Itachi most of all. Shisui and she are of the same age, so more than likely him as well. Obito she would’ve fought with like cats and dogs because they’re two very different people. Sasuke… I’m not sure if she would have an opinion other than “Itachi’s kid brother who sometimes tries too hard”. Lesser characters like Izumi I think would be friendly with her. The problem with AUs like this are that I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about them because I love the pain of ruining Ayame’s life.

Obito would be a cousin she frequently scratches at though, that I know definitively. She is his opposite in many ways.

out of the four — kunikuzushi is the most surprised one. the definition of a statue as his mind short circuits. the tension hugged him tighter in contrast to you, and he looks at you; confusion clouding the incredibly faint glimmer of curiosity in his eyes.

just what exactly is going on through your head this time to distract him from doing his nails? honestly, how annoyingly unpredictable could you get. but the balladeer digressed, choosing to situate a hand of his on your back. it was the best he could do for now.

“what is it?” he'd ask in a quiet tone, his gaze expressing indifference yet his touch on you is gentle and lingering as he brought you a little bit closer to him. his hand subconsciously trailing down to your lower back as your embrace grew warmer and more reassuring to him, causing the tension to leave his body bit by bit.

“nothing.” you replied, still maintaining that smile of yours as you felt his arm loosely wrap around you.

the wanderer is a bit of both kabukimono and kunikuzushi. sure, you suddenly decided to hug him while he was occupied with cooking lunch for the two of you and nahida, but the gesture wasn't unwelcome. neither was it unwanted.

he was still occupied with cutting the zaytun peaches and the bulle fruits for the little sprout, so how he reciprocates your embrace is by pausing his work and leaning his head slightly against yours, a slight smile adorning his face as he observes the way your expression brightens at his choice of how to reciprocate the gesture.

his lips sneakily find their way to plant a featherlight kiss to your head before he directs his attention back to slicing the bulle fruits into neat, ever so slightly uneven cuts. and the wanderer relishes in being able to feel your gaze on him, better yet, being in your arms from behind. but such words are feelings are better left unsaid.

after all, you are aware and so is he. what's the point in expressing such feelings through words?

Giant spoilers for TGAA 2 but I gave the main cast's dead moms names, faces, and Court Record profiles. And I wrote up some details on my headcanons and sprite edit process.

All ages listed are my headcanons for how old they were when they died (which like. Yikes.)

Sumire Asogi (34)

Same age as Genshin, who also does not have a canon age for whatever reason. I assume he's the same age as Yujin, Jigoku, and Klint though, making him 33 when he dies. Kazuma's mother canonically dies a year after. This also makes Kazuma's parents both concerningly 19 when he was born??? I don't think the devs thought too hard about that at the time but I'm choosing to included in my hcs lmao

"Sumire" is a joke name. Sumire means violet and there are FOUR whole Sherlock Holmes characters named Violet, which is probably the most common female name in the books. As a nice coincidence, violets represent honesty in hanakotoba, tying into the truth theme

Sumire actually has no Kazuma in her face! She's a Courtney Sithe recolor with Kazuma's bangs. I did stare at Kazuma's prosecutor portrait to try and nudge their eyes to be more similar though

Ayame Mikotoba (25)

She's 1-2 years younger than Yujin

Obviously this is just Susato squished around lol. If I were to do it again I'd alter her hairline, I think Susato got that from Yujin

My main aim was to make her look like Susato's tearful smile sprite. Any time I see that sprite I think "this is what her mother must've looked like."

She's 3 years younger than Klint

LADY BASKERVILLE MY BELOVED. Her married name ofc. I think I pulled "Lillian" from "Lilith" because.... vibes I guess. I also hc Klint calling her Lily so she also gets to have a flower name, and so Iris' father shares her nickname habit.

Lily's eyes are hazel because iirc, the Baskervilles in the book all/mostly have hazel eyes and Iris has her father's eyes.

This was the hardest one to make despite the canon image of her. Her base was Tusspells, herself, and obviously, Iris.

You know one thing that really bothers me about the idea that if Ayame was around when Akane was revealed as despair her first/main reaction would be "I can fix her" and put all her might into trying to get Akane to change is that it feels like Ayame as a person is being completely ignored in the equation.

Seriously, have you guys ever thought about how Ayame would be feeling when receiving that information? Because i think she would be pretty fucking devastated if she was there to see someone she cared about so much turn out to be one of the people who made them go through this hellish killing game. Hell, i always thought that if she hadn't broken/lost hope thus far this would be her breaking point.

Do you really think she would have the mind to completely push past all that in a millisecond and go "NOOOO AKANE I WILL SAVE YOU‼️‼️‼️"? Don't get me wrong i could totally see her being in denial, but i don't think her will would be that strong to be doing that the whole chapter when she would be hurting so fucking bad on the inside.

Would she even be able to go after Akane afterwards? Would she be able to bring herself to look at her in the face? Have you guys ever considered that? That maybe seeing the person you once found comfort and joy in twisted into a ruthless despair would really hurt a lot for someone who cared so so deeply like Ayame?

This is, once again, Ayame being boiled down to a tool for Akane's character instead of being treated as a character in her own right and I don't need to see more of that.

ok so. something funny. i made them be really into baseball. and it's funny cause ive gotten kagefuture compared to falsettos like 3 times and the kid in that musical plays baseball too BUT THAT WASN'T WHY. i just think ayame (shinaya kid) is really sporty and generally into all team sports but i was like ok i'll choose one to be Her thing. and i knew baseball is really popular in japan so i was between that and football (soccer for the americans but im not calling it that) but idk football is so The Basic Sport ever. so i went for baseball. so she's very intensely into baseball and breaks windows constantly at home. probably on an ongoing fight with ayano abt it

konoha (harutaka kid) (he named himself they wouldn't name him that) is also in the team with her because ayame dragged him along but he's not... suuuper into it and he's Reeeallly bad at it so he's always struggling with self confidence. Another funny thing. i thought of these hcs before the pixar series win or lose came out. ive only seen episode 1 since its free on youtube but when i watched it i was like omfg. that kid being upset playing softball is basically my konoha kid hc. like he's not having a good time and comes back from games really upset. haruka and takane would really want him to quit LOL so that's a point of discussion for the 3 of them

i think he refuses to quit cause he doesn't see it as an option+ayame has a very overbearing personality and is The decider. a little bit of a controlling best friend situation. ayame's the youngest of 4 and has a big age diff with her siblings and that has its cons (not taken seriously) and pros (gets whatever she wants). the cons result in her projecting very intensely in her friendship w konoha who is pretty meek and generally needs a lesson on learning to say no. EVENTUALLY konoha would obviously quit and focus his time in whatever introvert stuff he's into. maybe videogames like haruka and takane and they can be a lame gamer family

btw haruka and ayano are the ones going to see them play and they're rly intense abt it. shintaro and takane are NOT into that shit. konoha doesnt care takane doesnt go cause he sucks anyway and is embarrassed haruka is even there but ayame's bugging shintaro like CRAZY to go see her. shinaya point of discussion GO SEE UR DAMN KID PLAY HER GAME

also i think ayame is really smart and not cause she got the crazy high iq from shintaro but instead i think he'd really get into tutoring her and teaching her big words when she's small LOL so she's got a big vocabulary but she's also a kid so sometimes she talks like. dude that match had me totes discombobulated like seriously. and ayano's like wtf is ur dad saying to u.

shintaro w but he doesn't talk to ayame like she's stupid and just speaks like he would with anyone else and just explains it if he says a word she doesn't know. idk. i think it's cute if he got all into The Brain Development and Abstract Conceptualizations just to know what word of the week to give his kid. its CUTE ALRIGHT. jin would've made this guy a teacher. he can do that here. shintaro being good with kids and finding out he really likes them. is this a hot take. is this ooc. have i lost the plot too much

also ayano works with children so in college she probably studied up all that stuff too so they'd be on the same page and be having weirdass conversations abt ayame's developmental stage or some shit and haruka and takane are like wtf are u guys Talking about.

ummm UMM what else. well kano and ayame is its whole thing bc their relationship really depends on the outcome of kagefuture that i haven't even decided.

in a shinaya situation kano's different from her other uncles/aunts who treat her like best princess girl ever, kano is more distant and he's not like letting her stay over at his place like everyone else etc. like he's more difficult and she's stubborn and likes a challenge so she WOULD be a little annoying about it bc she's curious about him. and i think kido and seto who try so hard to be the best ever are so mad bc they're like this is just like ayano playing favorites with kano (i hc they think that) except now it's our niece prefering him! and kano isnt even awesome to her like we are!! WHY IS HE ALWAYS THE FAVORITE!!!

but their relationship in a kanoshin situation would be super different. he still wouldn't be treating her like best princess girl ever but he Would coddle her a lot more. because i mean i guess kano and shintaro would (INSANELY ENOUGH) be in a stable relationship and living together. so kano would inadvertently be a parent figure to her too cause they live together. but that thought freaks him out so much so instead they're always arguing like siblings lol. if she's staying with ayano she beefs with her siblings and if she's with shintaro she beefs with kano. but i guess kano will side with ayame if it gets on shintaro's nerves. which probably happens often. i think in a kanoshin situation it'd be funny for ayame to be sleeping between them and kicking nonstop and kano's like why did i sign up for this again.

either way, ayame takes joy from riling him up. kind of like shintaro does. this is kano's karma for always messing with everybody so badly. congrats ur niece is just as annoying as ur ex bf/lame husband.

btw it feels silly to clarify but ayame and konoha wouldn't be together romantically. cause i feel pairing up fankids is really common so that's why i say it. they're more like family

haruka and takane have no siblings and both have 1 person as caregivers (and haruka's is kinda not awesome) so like. their family IS the mekakushi dan. and shintaro and ayano are their best friends theyre always hanging out so their kids are like. kind of like cousins. the cousin ur actual friends with and u go to the same school just different grades. that's their vibe hehe

Blisterrrr. I "redesigned" her to fit her book description as I don't think she's all that accurate in the graphic novel. Nothing too crazy, just made her a bit more serpentine and cunning in the face.

Also its not too clear from this angle but i've decided to hc that sandwings have pitch black insides (kinda like the ayam cemani chicken, but the melanism is only expressed under the scales).

So teeth, eyes, bones, organs all melanistic. I was thinking it could be something akin to a certain bacteria common in the sand kingdom that also gives their bite an extra boost in lethality, not due to venom or anything but the increased likelihood of infection. (I drew some inspo for the concept from sea lions and their black teeth, just look it up it's actually kinda interesting).

Note: this is before they would end up dating, yet they’re still pining in this imagine. Also, i ignore a few kinjo hcs of mine for the sake of the imagine. If you know which ones i’m referring to, you know. Other than that, this can be canon to kinjomae fluff land too B)

This is also formatted like something I’d write, plot wise and stuff.

so, the beach day event would come from the initiation of a trip with the whole class (which would be a whole oneshot in itself, but i digress). kinjo "i've never had fun at a party" tsurugi would be skeptical and a bit jaded about the whole thing. he originally would want to skip out on the event and take on some extra hours for the force instead, or at least get ahead on his studies. upon learning this, the whole extrovert dumbass section of the class including kisaragi would harass him into coming along after all, leaving no man behind.

yuki would be glum that kinjo didn't want to come, yet wouldn't be pushy about it. he'd be happy to learn he was tagging along in the end, though! it's always a good idea for him to get rest and enjoy leisure whenever possible- to flex the muscle, so to speak, since it’s so unusual for him.

They’d probably go on a bus to the seaside. Considering this is a school funded field trip, they may not be alone in their class, so the bus would be pretty clamorous. Kinjo spends the whole time glaring into his backpack, checking and double checking that he has enough sunscreen.

“You brought sunscreen?” yuki is surprised kinjo didn’t approach this with the mindset that between him and the sun, he would obviously win.

“It’s for you. You’re ginger.” kinjo responds like it’s the most obvious thing in the world.

They arrive at the scene.. It’s an idyllic day, seagulls overhead, few clouds drifting lazily in the sky, and the sun beaming down brightly. Satsuki, haru and teruya immediately chase each other off the bus, kizuna follows mitch, clinging to his arm and trying to weasel money out of him with the help of a bikini, akane and mikako depart and begin to find shells in the sand- kiyoka is hanging out with ayame, promising to pummel anyone who is weird to her at all during this trip (mitch. Aka mitch.) inori is lecturing kinji on the importance of using sunscreen as an albino while yamaguchi basically gets hit on immediately, but his iconic smile scares the poor damsel away. Teruya wields a floatie and several colorful noodles. It only takes a moment for satsuki to steal them from him and sprint away top speed. Haru goes to retrieve them, but the lovers instead end up in a dramatic noodle fight, teruya jaded that he’s been forgotten about. He lets them get it out of their system, instead accompanying kisaragi who’s trying to find some seaweed. They make plans to cook it together and feed their classmates the memento of the occasion. 

As chaos has hit pretty immediately, yuki is dragged into the shade and sunscreened up. He gets very flustered as he takes off his shirt, and doesn’t really understand… why. It’s just kinjo, after all. He’s just doing what he does and protecting him. But something about the situation is highly embarrassing to him, at least until the cold spray hits him and he nearly jumps out of his skin.

In return, he ends up grappling with kinjo and screening him too. He’s even FURTHER flustered at seeing kinjo shirtless. He wouldn’t have anticipated the sheer level of lean muscle on this guy. Kinjo snaps in front of his face several times, which gets yuki back to his senses. “Maeda, your face is already incredibly red. I knew this would happen- you should sit in the shade.” 

Yuki instead suggests a dip in the water. Kinjo looks grudgingly over the sand, and nods. “Go ahead.”

“With you… i mean…” yuki clarifies awkwardly.

“Why me?” he asks genuinely, brows raising. Kinjo has problems seeing the reality of things at times, but he’s self aware for the most part. He knows he isn’t ‘fun’ or ‘entertaining’ to be with. He’s a protector, he’s reliable, he’s a pillar in stress and tragedy, but he isn’t someone to play with or jump in the ocean with. He’s not used to these things- yuki could very easily join the noodle fight or the seashell hunt or the seaweed search and have much better company. But he’s not. Yuki is oddly stubborn like that, isn’t he? It feels a bit different from usual, though. Kisaragi’s friendship with him seemed to stem from an odd… pity, at finding him to be alone most of the time. Yuki was different. He always looked at him like he was amazing.

Not in the same way the public during interviews would look at him, or the crowd would look at him as he was handed awards. It was the gaze of someone who knew him at his core, who in the moment did not need his protection, yet still saw so highly of him. 

“Everyone else is busy.” yuki points out. That’s true, but it doesn’t need to stop him?

Before kinjo can point that out, he’s being dragged towards the water. “C-c’mon…”

So the cop follows him without a word. Yuki is acting very weird, red faced and jittery. Kinjo squints at him mutely, yet doesn’t directly ask yet.

He’s pulled a bit of a distance away from the cacophony. He sucks in a breath before turning around. “I-um- I need your help.”

“My help with what?”

“I….” yuki sucks in a breath. “...can’t swim.”

“...what?”

“Don’t tell anyone! Please don’t tell anyone!” He immediately pleads. “It’s my best kept secret, but.. If i don’t swim, people are going to start asking questions about why i can’t and they’re going to make fun of me and- i’m already unimpressive in their eyes, i don’t need to be made fun of for… something stupid like this…”

“I see.” Kinjo responds. “So what do you want me to do?’

“Can I…” Yuki scratched his cheek. “Can I hold onto you a bit…? If we go a bit deeper, your feet should probably still touch the ground… and then you can tell everyone we did it together and i just got tired after that.”

“You’ve strategized.” Kinjo remarks, brows raised. “Alright, i can do that for you, yuki.”

They head in the water together. Yuki grips onto kinjo’s arm, who looks over at him impassively. “Wait, let’s stay in the shallows for a minute.”

“Alright…”

…

Yuki skids the water through his hand and procures a small splash while kinjo is zoning out. It hits him in the side. The officer looks over, exasperated. “What was that for?”

Mutely, yuki splashes him again, wetting his hair this time. “...pfahaha! Your bangs are all over your eyes!”

“You… maeda…” kinjo sputters out, in that moment overcome with the ridiculousness of the situation. Yuki, who had just asked for his help in convincing their students of a lie, who had just dragged him into the water, was now pelting him with it like a child? How stupid, how ridiculous, childish, how…

But the way Yuki is laughing… somehow, the way he’s laughing just…

Kinjo fires back. A wave of water hits Yuki in the arm and he shrieks. But despite his clear losing battle in this situation, he continues splashing kinjo back. “I-it was a joke! Please don’t bring the wrath of poseidon on me, kinjo!”

“Yet you KEEP splashing me…”

“...well, cus it’s funny.”

Kinjo launches another wave at him out of spite. This one leaves him dripping wet.

They eventually move into the deep end. Kinjo allows yuki to hold onto him, asking him if he’s ever learned how to tread water. Yuki shook his head morosely. Utsuro’s parents were too absent to teach him, he’s never had a particular natural skill in swimming, and something about the ocean is just so… terrifying to him. He can’t put his finger on it. But something about Kinjo being here makes everything a little easier to stomach.

Kinjo is quiet for a few moments before he offers to teach him. Yuki is hesitant at first, but kinjo insists. There is no way to gain strength in a topic without leaving your comfort zone. He has a feeling he’ll have to be a little more careful and soft with yuki here than he typically would in his own self discipline. But… that’s out of his comfort zone, too, isn’t it?

In the same way that he agreed to come here in the first place. For the same reason he’s in the water now. It’s… odd to him. The chatter, the laughter, the expected realization. It’s odd to yuki. For his feet not to touch the ground, to be near entirely submerged, plagued by worries of drowning. But he can hold onto yuki. And yuki can hold onto him. And excruciating as it feels for both of them… the sun is still shining down on them. Everything is still okay.

The lesson goes well. Yuki can tread water by the time kinjo has finished his instruction. He’s thrilled, and ends up gingerly wading around until his arms get tired. He loudly proclaims he swam to his fellow students when they get back. They’re not sure what the hype is about, but good for him?

At the end of the event, they all have a beach picnic together. 

Tsurugi Kinjo will find sand in his clothes months and months after the event has ended.

Yet somehow, he’s still glad he came.
