Family and the Institution of Alice Academy

Was thinking about this ever since someone (I forgot specifically who, sorry) posed a question like this in the GA discord, asking about (I think) Natsume's extended family or something like that. It was a really interesting concept that I've been thinking a lot about since it was brought up, so here are the thoughts I've accumulated. I'll try to be concise but I have a LOT of thoughts and my brain is messy.

My general opinion at the end of all this thinking I did is that I don't think Academy students typically have very close familial ties after graduating.

I think the most apparent reason for that would be that students are expected to graduate when they are twenty years old. Our main four are exceptions to the rule, coming to the Academy pretty late in life. Most children are taken early, as toddlers or even babies. Natsume, Ruka, and Hotaru's families did all they could to avoid Academy scouting. Mikan was entirely accidental--if she had never met Hotaru, she might have never even found out she was an Alice to begin with. That being said, most kids were separated from their families at a very young age, only to be allowed to reunite with them once they're already adults. For many students, they've been away from their parents for close to two decades.

On top of that, the Academy doesn't allow visitations or phone calls and severely restricts letter communications. Only one child from each class is allowed to return home for one week each year, and that one week does not do much to make up for all the time spent at school.

My point is that by the time students are allowed to see their families again, that familial bond has already been severed, for all intents and purposes. That feeling of closeness and protection no longer exists. Students will feel more closeness and connection to their classmates and even to their teachers than to their parents or siblings, and as a result, I can imagine many graduates not even bothering to visit their families.

While I was pondering this, I made the connection between Academy students and the real life example of a similar situation with Janissaries from the Ottoman Empire. Basically, Janissaries were children stolen from the subjugated people under Ottoman rule. They were taken for the purpose of a "child levy", also known as a "blood tax." Some children were even willingly given by their families due to the possibility of socially advancing, and because the children were promised first class status (sound familiar?). Essentially the children were taken, forced to comply with Ottoman standards and traditions (including forced conversions and circumcisions), and then trained for military service. These soldiers would actually end up being incredibly loyal and efficient, despite likely never seeing their families again.

(Edit: forced circumcisions are particularly heinous when you consider that the children were typically at least 10 years old at the time they were taken.... so.... uh.... not pleasant.... But also interesting that the Janissaries were typically much older than the Alice children at the time of being taken.)

That level of separation doesn't endear ties; it severs them. These Janissaries--very often forcefully taken from their families--ended up growing up with very little connection to their parents or siblings. The feeling of belonging to their previous communities was gone. Absence does not always make the heart grow fonder. This was done as a means of creating a strong military force but also to disillusion subjugated communities and tear away their hope. Their children could always be taken; their communities could always be crushed, even without the use of physical force. It's a very effective tool to oppress a group of people.

(There's actually a lot of similarities between Academy children and Janissaries beside the separation of children from their families. They were also paid for their service and were high ranking; the Academy students are given an allowance and many of them, despite being stolen from their families, have a sense of superiority over non-Alices. They feel like they are treasures, and are of higher value and rank. Additionally, Academy students, especially in the DA class, are highly trained and efficient child soldiers, much like the Janissaries. Janissaries are actually a super interesting historical topic and are worth looking into!)

We can even see the effect of this distance when Yuka escapes the Academy and runs away to her family. Yuka was essentially sold to the Academy, with her parents trading her in exchange for money and status. She was very young, far too young to really understand that her parents had abandoned her. As a result, she romanticized her bond with them, and the longer she was separated from them, the more that bond became fantastical. She made many attempts to escape the school to reunite with her parents and she fantasized about seeing them again. When she finally is able to, it's nothing like she imagined. They're cold, and unfamiliar. They don't recognize her. She doesn't know her brothers. They're related, but there's no real connection.

"I shouldn't have come here."

Yuka's is an extreme example, but I'm sure she's not an exception. For most Academy students, the almost 20 years of separation from their parents would be too much to ignore. They would not recognize each other, or be close. I'm sure many parents did not sell their children like Yuka's family did, but the bond between child and family had not been nurtured the way it should have been, resulting in coldness and distance.

Because of that, I doubt most students even bother seeking their families out, or even if they do, it's to visit a few times before starting a new life with a career. That familial bond, now broken, is difficult to repair. The connections people often feel with their families or hometowns is something Academy students instead feel with each other. They are all Alices, all in the same boat together. That feeling of superiority that many kids feel means they view each other as on the same level, and I'm sure that could interfere with family connection as well.

Thus, I don't think there's many multigenerational Alice families out there with close bonds. I don't think families like Natsume's have strong ties with grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins. Even the sibling bonds at the Academy are stunted, with the Imai and Shouda siblings being the prime examples of that.

The Imai siblings have a significant age difference, yes, but additionally the Imai parents had a very different approach to Hotaru after seeing what happened with Subaru. They refused to hand her over as easily, wanting to show her important things in life and build happy memories for as long as they could. Even when Hotaru does enter the school, it's more than six months before she even comes across her brother, since the high school and elementary school are not integrated with each other and they do not belong to the same ability class. Similarly, the Shouda siblings are in different ability classes but they have a much smaller age gap. Despite this, Sumire refers to her brother very respectfully, indicating that there isn't a particular closeness.

The Imais fight against this divide, and put in genuine effort into rebuilding their relationship, but it's a difficult process, and one they struggle to admit to for a long time and for various reasons. Familial closeness is not encouraged, not even within the Academy.

(Though Natsume's bond with Aoi is exploited and the school does rely on him caring for her to take advantage of him, but ultimately he is kept from seeing her. Thus, that bond is also severed despite being exploited.)

Additionally, it would make sense to me if many Alice graduates decided to, upon having children, avoid scouting, like Natsume's parents did, and thus ended up moving around a lot to escape Academy notice. Moving around like that and laying low means that you're not going to be hosting huge family reunions or inviting relatives over often, even if all the other points were moot.

Finally, I think all this creates further obstacles for Yuka's wish to "have a family." At some point she says that, for normal people, the desire to settle down with someone and start a family is a pretty modest goal, but for Alices it's almost impossible. Escaping from the school, or even graduating, is a struggle. And you can have a kid, but it's likely that child will be taken from you, just as you were taken, and by the time the child graduates, they will have no connection with you. Wanting to be a potential grandparent, for example, might seem like a definite impossibility, since being a real parent is impossible.

It's even more proof that the Academy exists as an institution to subjugate and undermine Alices, as children and then as parents. Ultimately, an Alice never has control, not as a child and not even as an adult. The pain doesn't end once you've graduated; in fact, it never does.

Can someone please tell me what’s going on here? LOOK AT SHIKI GRABBING NATSUME, then kept holding his hand? I think something’s going on in here. Not sure if he’s reading his memory and found out that Goshima is the traitor? Cause on the first image, he grabs Natsume’s hand, then there’s an alice Stone between them. This makes me think that Shiki is using a temporary alice like the Memory Manipulating Alice?

I'd never have expected this manga to get this bad, despite the issues I had with it. I'm not sure how far into the story the anime gets, but hopefully not that far...

Spoilers up to chapter 111 of Alice Academy/Gakuen Alice, and, obviously, CWs for. everything up to that point.

There was a point earlier in the story that would be a perfect stopping point. And I still liked the manga at that time, but I think I was confused about a few very things, because I misunderstood what was meant by "representatives of the divisions." Because of that, I assumed that the Principals were students--and in my defense, the elementary school one does look like a child, but then it turned out he was an adult who got de-aged.

What I'm getting at is the fact that there is a character clearly based directly on Anthy Himemiya who is at least implied to be a pedophile. And this happened before the stopping point, which isn't encouraging re: the anime not getting to the worst parts...

That's not even what this screencap is about, but I realized it at the same time as we were getting this backstory on Mikan's mother, because all three Principals are in it.

This screencap is... this screencap is Mikan's mother after she was rejected by her teacher, and she's talking about her horrible attitude towards the boy who sexually assaulted her twice, and the guy (age unknown, to me) who wouldn't leave her alone even when she asked him to because their spending so much time together was causing rumors that impacted her life.

I'm honestly--even though sexual assault has been taken very lightly, to say the least, several times already, this had not seemed like one of those times. So despite the track record already being shaky at best, I'm stunned that we're getting something as bad as this...

Oh, and I don't know how it happens, but she and the teacher do end up together. And everyone but Hotaru (bless her) seems to think this was okay.

Pubblicato un secondo video promozionale di “Slow Loop”, la serie animata basata sull’omonimo manga slice of life, scritto e illustrato da Maiko Uchino, attualmente in lavorazione presso lo studio CONNECT (Senryu Girl, ORESUKI: Are you the only one who loves me?).

Il trailer anticipa brevemente sia la sigla di testa “Yajirushi”, interpretata dalle Pokapoka Ion (duo formato da Nao Toyama e Kiyono Yasuno), che la sigla di coda “Shuwa Shuwa”, cantata da Rin Kasumi, Natsumi Hioka, Tomomi Mineuchi, le doppiatrici rispettivamente di Hiyori, Koharu e Koi.   

Assieme al video è stata svelata anche una nuova locandina per la serie, che debutterà sulle tv giapponesi il 7 gennaio 2022.

La sceneggiatura è curata da Yuka Yamada (Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, Asteroid in Love), mentre il character design e la supervisione del comparto animazioni sono affidati a Shoko Takimoto (Armed Girl’s Machiavellism, ORESUKI: Are you the only one who loves me?). La protagonista della storia è Hiyori, una ragazza che ama la pesca a mosca, un'attività tramandatale dal suo defunto padre. In una delle sue tipiche giornate in spiaggia, Hiyori si imbatte in Koharu, che si dà il caso sia la figlia del nuovo marito di sua madre.

Il manga è stato lanciato sulle pagine della rivista Manga Time Kirara Forward nel 2018 e finora Houbunsha ne ha pubblicato in Giappone cinque volumetti.

When I was reading your most recent nm:m essay, I realized that I have the volume containing the chapters discussed (i only have the one book though rip) and I came across the part where Yuka and Shiki meet up(?) with Narumi at what looks like a graveyard or something?? It's in ch 43-44 or so, but anyway Narumi mentioned that Yuka took an alice from him, and I'm just confused by that?

Like, does (or I guess, did) he have two alices? What was the other one? Did Yuka ever give it back? And when the alice or whatever is described in his internal dialogue, it's phrased as like "[his] whole life's worth of love" and stuff which further confuses me because,,, that's not?? how alices work??

Idk Narumi constantly confuses me, so it's not a new thing, but since you have gone through the series with a fine toothed comb, I figure you might know something about it? I wondered if you would bring it up in the essays, but I don't think that whole situation would have to do with Natsume or Mikan (but I could be wrong, I occasionally am).

hi! this got a little long so my answers to your questions are under the cut!!

yeah i don't mention it in my essay so i don't mind discussing it here. in chapter 44, narumi waits at the graveyard where izumi is buried because he knows he'll find yuka there. he then implores her to return the alices she's stolen, from the students and from him.

i understand why it's confusing because yuka steals all of iinchou's alice from him in this arc, but she only stole a little bit of narumi's alice that night when she saw him before running away. he has only one alice, the human pheromone alice, but only a little was stolen. narumi used his alice on yuka two times. the first time he managed it, she was humiliated (and that incident is what spurred izumi to gift her his alice stone, if im not mistaken, so she can be safe from surprise attacks in the future), but for the rest of their school relationship, he doesn't use his alice on her again until she comes to say goodbye.

i can certainly see why this would be confusing, but the stealing alice is a bit complicated, and i still don't understand all the ins and outs of it, where mikan was able to steal luna's alice a couple times without depriving her of her entire power. ultimately it depends on the alice, i think, how much effort it would take to completely take away someone's alice. an alice is a finite thing, which is why people desperately want their stones back after they've been stolen, even a little bit. luna screams at yuka and mikan on separate occasions to return the alice they stole from her because now she has less than she did before, even if she still has some left.

so here, she had taken some of naru's alice, but probably only the amount that he was using on her. he wants it back because that's his alice, and it's pretty well-established in the lore that an alice is a personal and beloved thing (with maybe only natsume and perhaps even yuka feeling differently). i always thought of it like an organ, maybe. you could live with only one kidney, but if someone stole your other kidney, you'd probably want it back anyway. but it's also deeper than that, because naru is a melodramatic guy and he compounds the stealing of his alice with the breaking of his heart.

that night, yuka refused to let naru come with her, which was the ultimate rejection after years of pining for her. he knew she loved izumi instead and was okay with that; he just wanted to be with her, whatever way he could. when she refused, and then stole his alice, it hurt a lot because he felt so insignificant to her. the stolen alice is symbolic of the fact that he feels like he lost his heart that night too, because they happened at the same moment.

so you're very much right that that's not how alices work! he's just being dramatic. in fact he tells yuka to her face at the graveyard, "thanks to you, i'm once again unable to love or be in love," which is ridiculous because that's his responsibility, not hers. hurt by that night, naru has spent the rest of his life (so the past decade or so) pretty cold and apathetic, which is probably why he's such a lackluster teacher when we first meet him. he puts on a front, but he's still callous, just like when he was a kid. he doesn't want to be hurt again like he was by yuka, so he decides not to let anybody into his heart again. that's not really yuka's fault, though, because she only wanted to protect him.

yuka's side of things is that she feels like people get hurt when they're associated with her (she's very like natsume in that way), so she does have the thought of stopping naru's love when she steals his alice. she genuinely doesn't want him to love her anymore because it'll only result in him getting hurt. i guess in that way, they both kind of buy into the metaphor that stolen alice=stolen feelings.

she refuses to return his alice because he will chase her again; and that means less that a returned alice would magically return his heart to him, but more that if she gives it back, it would encourage him to pursue her again. she does leave the other alices behind for the students, but no, to answer your other question, she never does return his alice to him.

naru's reasoning for wanting the stone (and feelings) back is not so he can pursue her again, but so he can completely sever his attachment to her. it's faulty logic, though, because he still has his feelings. he even admits so to himself, because he feels fondness for mikan (and presumably his other students, though it all started with mikan). he had thought he'd shut his heart down for good, but he still feels love anyway. and he still feels it for yuka too: this is all just pretending.

i definitely understand the confusion about this scene!! it's largely out of context. by chapter 44 we still don't know very much about yuka or naru's past, so they're talking about moments we haven't seen and don't fully understand. as we slowly learn more about the stealing alice, it might make a little more sense, but the arc where we get all the background about their past is so dense and full of information that it's very easy to get overwhelmed.

narumi is a very confusing character. his motivations are pretty elusive for most of the manga, and it really doesn't help that he lies to himself so often; it makes it more challenging to pin him down. he IS, for a fact, though, pretty melodramatic, especially when it comes to his feelings for yuka. to him, it's all very intense and heart-wrenching to him, which is why he speaks so dramatically, using grand metaphors and accusing yuka of stealing all his feelings away.

i think it might have been higuchi tachibana's intention to confuse the audience too, by having yuka play along with the metaphor. if we're confused, then we wanna keep reading so that we can eventually find out what they're talking about!! this chapter is designed to be confusing, so it makes even more sense that you might leave it feeling unsure of what just happened.

i hope that cleared things up a little. i find naru to be the most challenging character to analyze in the whole manga. pretty much everyone else i have a good handle on but naru is so weird. i think that's due to 1. his tendency to lie to others and even to himself, 2. his three different personalities (his real self, his cold facade from when he was a kid and now with yuka, and then the flamboyant personality he uses nowadays) 3. the manga's flip-flopping on what exactly his intentions are, and whether or not he's purely motivated by self interest. he's just a really weird guy.

    Synopsis

  Called “Juggernaut,” these are the unmanned combat drones developed by the Republic of San Magnolia in answer to the attacks by the autonomous unmanned drones of the neighboring Empire of Giad, the “Legion”. But they’re only unmanned in name. In reality, they are piloted by the Eighty-sixers—those considered to be less than human and treated as mere tools. A TV anime adaptation for Naoki Yamakawa's manga series “100-man no Inochi no Ue ni Ore wa Tatteiru” (I'm standing on 1,000,000 lives.) has been announced for October 2020.

-Synopsis-

“Yotsuya Yuusuke along with his classmates Shindou Iu and Hakozaki Kusue have been transported to a strange and unknown world inhabited by mythological creatures. As soon as they arrive, they meet somebody calling himself the Game Master who then grants them a time-limited quest. To aid them in this quest, he also bestows Shindou and Hakozaki with the roles of a Magician and a Warrior while Yotsuya is randomly granted the role of... a Farmer?!

This is how a hectic life of adventuring began for three students who now have no choice, but to complete random quests for several phases in the fantasy world if they want to stay alive and protect the real world from the demons and monsters they encounter.“
