It’s that time of year again! And as always, I had trouble putting together my list of favorite music from this year. It’s very interesting for me because at first, I wasn’t even sure if I could fill a list of 20 or 40. What do you mean I haven’t re-watched Healer yet? I didn’t promise that!

Honorable Mentions:

We all need trot in our lives. So here is Kim Hea Ra for you, with a frankly disappointingly calm video. Or, HOONiYONGi, which is mildly stranger, but still tame for trot. Or you can watch a girl ask to become ugly. That’s a trot option this week too.

I feel like I’m listening to mid-2000s Western pop again with from20′s two releases this week. The lyrics of the eponymous track feel a bit like a weird google translate, but are grammatically sound, so I’m not sure how they got. written. Cigarette’s&You , the Korean release is the more musically interesting of the two, with some fun little synth lines, and a more modern production on the voice. I prefer the second to the first.

G.Soul’s runs may sound autotuned, and they may be in his newest track, but he can do them live, so I don’t mind them as much. Because he is probably one of the most talented singers in Korea right now, and he is not well known in a lot of international circles anymore. It’s partially because he has gone by multiple names, and partially because he went to the military without any fanfare and came back just as quietly. For You is another solid R&B track from him, and shows off his unique vocal style well.

Idol Round-up:

- All In by DKB: Feels like a Backstreet Boys song. I’m not sure how I feel about that.

- Do Re Me Fa Sol by Park Bom: I still don’t know what her style is now as a soloist, and this hasn’t really solidified it for me.

- Bambi by Baekhyun: Idk why it’s called Bambi, but it’s sexier than Candy, since it doesn’t have the happier vibe of that track. I like it, but don’t love it.

- Warning by Kim Sejeong: Fun and sweet, but a little too high for me throughout. Feels like an IU track, so take that how you will.

- Hush by Kim Sung Kyu: Driving mid-tempo ballad that is Sunggyu’s bread and butter. I’m sure I will love it after a few more listens, but I’m not quite there yet.

The chorus of WJSN’s Unnatural is high for a little too long for me. But the hook is so good that I don’t actually mind. Like every single lead into the chorus, but especially the last one with it’s variation, is great. It is a cool way to drop out of the sound scape of the song and move between parts while building anticipation. 10/10 on that alone. The high notes everywhere though stop me from giving it a win.

I didn’t expect Hoshi to be the first member of Seventeen to go solo, but in hindsight it makes sense, since he is a performance team guy, and thus has a lot of the skill set a soloist needs. I don’t think Spider is revolutionary, but it is pleasant to listen to. The visuals (and a little bit the vocals) were giving me some hardcore Wonho solo vibes. I’m not sure why, but the styling feels really similar to me.
