There were a number of spectacular sequences in the Kalakeya vs. Mahishmati battle scenes. But in addition to the bloodbath, I was mad uncomfortable with the depiction of the Kalakeya— and this lessened the cinematic brilliance of this entire section for me.
BUT, I absolutely loved the scene just before the battle.
Baahubali refuses to sacrifice an innocent animal. His own blood will suffice. And that’s just sheer perfection in the character of this fierce warrior who is otherwise pretty ruthless on the battlefield.
I’m a huge animal lover, a vegetarian for ethical reasons, and completely against animal sacrifice of any sort. So I was happy to see that Baahubali would not kill a buffalo just for superstition sake.
Yay!!! — Submitted by @carminavulcana

So since watching rrr, I’ve been diving into Indian movies. This is just a helpful list for me to keep track of what I’ve watched so far. What I watch is just based upon what I can get my hands on and whatever comes up first. I also have a few movies I’ve started but not finished for various reasons that I plan to go back to. I also try to watch films in their original languages.
RRR (first Indian film. Amazing movie 10/10)
Baahubali: The Beginning (the first 30 minutes to 1 hr of this is so very confusing, but after that i enjoyed every second of both movies. Was a very good time)
Baahubali 2: The Conclusion
Article 15 (crime drama. First major run in with the caste system in Indian movies i encountered.)
Acharya ( it sure was a film. Subtitles weren't great, and it was very slow. Enjoyed it tho)
Rangasthalam (I liked this one pretty good, fav of Ram Charan I’ve see rn. Only three rn tho. His films are hard to find for some reason :( )
Aravinda Sametha (This was pretty good, but very slow at points, JR NTR film. About factions and trying to end the cycle of violence. LI was good, but so dumb in places. She’s studying factions, but seems to be so ignorant about them??? July 1: Just learned the version I watched cut like 20 minutes from the film lmao. Like at least the funeral scene got cut. I think a few songs got cut. I wonder how many different bits of films I’ve missed 💀 Might explain some of the pacing issues I’d come across.)
Janatha Garage (Subtitles were so so bad, but fav of JR NTR’s so far.)
K.G.F Chapter 1 (1 and 2 are really really good. the love story is pure Stockholm syndrome tho rip.)
K.G.F Chapter 2
Jana Gana Mana (really good movie. Courtroom drama. Feels pro cop at the beginning then becomes a critique of media culture and corrupt systems i think?)
Adhurs (double NTR’s! It was okay, not the best but a fun time. One i watched was like a third hand rip and would pause to load in a lot of places, so dramatic moments were lost)
Kaithi (fav movie rn. Going through the single night was aces. Seeing the sun come up at the end was very satisfying. Getting to know Gilli over the course of the movie was a+)
Master (good move. The scene in the middle where he shaves the kids heads was a little :/ cause invasion of body autonomy like that always makes me sour on stuff a little bit.)
Pushpa: The Rise (love the body language of the main actor. really good. Can’t wait for the second part)
Bruce Lee: The Fighter (Had fun watching it. Tw suicide attempt tho. The Chiranjeevi cameo was fun. )
Govindudu Andarivadele (Ram Charan film. Weird edits. Why did the character get over his friend deceiving him with the wrong picture. Feeling weird about the cousin love thing, but otherwise pretty good! Cried at the end of this. I think my version was cut weird cause I like cut out Abhi getting shot and then like his dad reacting? Music cues were also all weird?)
Beast (fun movie I think. MC was interesting. Felt like it would fit in with usa war films tho)
Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo (liked this film. Laughed a lot during a good fun time with some feels)
Mersal (???? Doctor/magician in the way of Kaito Kid and in that i mean out of left field amazing tricks??? Got to like a fight scene and had to stop cause life. Just pulled a staff out of a bag??? I've seen song videos on youtube and it is very much not this??? So confused. I have since watched more and loving it. Verti(SP?) is very sim to Kaito Kid, but he kills people instead of stealing gems lmao. Loved the ending. Def cried while watching. Leaving prev notes cause they a little live blog of thoughts.)
Brindavanam (the edits in this are wack as shit. Makes no sense rn, but it compels me NTR JR. Love triangle??? induced by original LI??? Into the back half. They are now trying to get out of the problems the fake dating has caused lol. Edits have def calmed down. fun ending. They didn’t present a solution to the love triangle lol which I think is for the best)
Sarkar (interesting so far. My dad started watching it with me, it almost made him late for work cause he got pulled in lol, so I can’t continue without him :(. Finished it! Really liked this movie. Soundtrack was really good)
Secret Superstar (feels filled movie. I liked this one)
Vikram Vedha (I was rooting for Vedha through out the whole movie lol. They said Vikram was a honorable cop, but he straight up shot a man who had surrendered and engineered multiple encounters)
Petta (It was okay. Not really my favorite, and kinda felt disconnected. Was not a big fan of the end either. It felt like a twist for a twist sake. :/)
Jai Bhim (Really liked this movie. It was really well done. Every moment really gripped you. Sangani's story was heartbreaking 10/10)
Etharkkum Thunindvavan (a heavy movie inregarding sexual violence, but good. Feels a little heavy handed in it's message at times, but that just may be me. Seems like it might have a sequal in the future based upon the ending? I'll be looking out for it.)
Pada (about a 1996 protest for the rights of the adivasi people. Very well done and thought provoking movie. Unfortunately the subtitles just. didn't translate some lines???? Like important ending the movie lines. Rip the amazon prime and their subtitle contractor. I swear every movie is subtitled/translated horribly)
Forensic (really interesting movie. The story it wove was very dramatic. Little of the rails at times tho)
Thimmarsu (fun movie with some action and drama. What a twist at the end)
Maharshi (interesting movie. A nice story with a good? message. Main actor wasn’t my fav tho)
Uyare (a good movie. Loved Pallavi)
Anjaan (The reveal bits were some of the funnest parts of the movie. It was fun to watch. idk what else to say about it. Was hoping for a double roll but it was not to be rip.)
Bigil (I really liked this film even the sport parts which I don’t always go for. Loved the combo of action film with sport film.)
Bairavaa  (I liked it. A good Vijay film. The plan that was spun was cool)
Bloody Mary (Loved this movie. Was a good fun time. Loved the soundtrack, but I can’t find it anywhere rip)
Theri (loved the relationship between Vijay and his daughter. Made me miss Ice and Talapathy from Mersal tho 😔. The bits were he pretended to be a ghost were really good)
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (cried like a baby while watching this movie. It was really good.)
DJ Duvvade Jagammadham (DJ was an interesting character. A fun movie, but also hate how it leaves DJ still going around killing people lmao)
Veetla Vishesham (Was a good time. Wish it focused a little more on the brothers, but would recommend it.)
Lucifer (Really loved this one. It was so good. Cannot wait for the squeal and the Chiranjeevi remake)
Dangal (Really Really good. Loved this movie a lot)
Kilometers and Kilometers (A good movie. Moved me to tears at times and was a really good watch)
Raame Aandalum Raavane Aandalum (lovely movie. I liked it a lot. The old man’s plight being thrust forward was really good)
3 idiots (really liked this film. The romance did nothing for me though. Loved the relationship between the core three. big tw for suicide tho)
Kaththi (It was pretty good. Really liked it)
Jai Lava Kusa (NTR in a triple role was really really good. Liked this one a lot)
Taare Zameen Par (really good movie. Ishaan was the best. Loved it so much)
Maaran (interesting movie. I liked it the relationship between the Maaran and his sister was really good)
Om Shanti Om  (sad fun film. It was good, but not my favorite)
Dasvi (interesting and fun film. Loved the MC’s quest to complete his education)
Godse (no idea how to feel about this film. It was good and I liked it. Watching Godse’s story unwind was def a one punch to the gut after another)
Kapoor and Sons (another really good movie. the last like 45 minutes just like rips out your heart and hands it to you on a platter. Would have loved to see the brother hug at the end tho)
Thaana Serndha Koottam (A fun movie loved all the biplay and plans in this movie. Really good)
Imaikkaa Nodigal (interesting film. The slow discovery of what was going on was really fun.)
Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui (It was a good movie and I liked it. Hard to get through on account of everything Maanvi goes through. Would have loved to see Manu apologize like straight out)
Started But Not Finished (plan to finish them tho) (given up on keeping track of this lmao)
Badhaai DO (Queer movie. Like what I've watched so far. need to finish it)
Gangubai Kathiawadi (stars sita’s actress, barely started it, but looks good)
Radhe Shyam (idk what to make of this movie?? Watched cause Prabhas but rom coms aren't my thing all that much)
Don (sure is something? love story comedy thing. Clicked cause i saw it trending on some chart and I'm not really vibing with it)
Lagaan (really good. Has a CW actor in it which i did not expect to see in any shape or form. Gotta watch the actual match now. Really long)
Mirchi (Prabhas movie. MC seeks to change LI factionist family I think?? Subtitles are not helping me)
Super Deluxe (mixed feeling on  this one. On one hand Trans woman whose identity is treated seriously, but on the other hand she’s hate crimed almost every second she’s on screen and is played by a cis man. The other two storylines are fun, except for the fatphobia which is :/)
Yevadu (sure is an experience. fun revenge plot Ram Charan film)
Magadheera (the film is really dragging for me right now rip)
Rang De Basanti (interesting film. Liking this one. sad and thought provoking with some fun times. Hitting the end rn)
Night Drive (almost half way through. Liking it so far. Interesting setup for the plot)
Tughlaq Durbar (about a third of the way through. Split personality thing is throwing me off, so idk if I'll finish it)
Khaidi No. 150 (it’s a fun movie. The fact that LI is played by the same actress that’s the same age as Ram Charan and was also the LI in one of his movies is majorly throwing me off)
Thalaivaa (Not really doing anything for me :/)

New Whump Blog
Hey everyone,
I have liked reading and writing whump since I was really young, except I did not know it was called whump and that it was normal.
Well, I write a lot of fanfic, especially for Star Trek and Baahubali (an amazing, angsty Indian franchise with the hottest, most whumpable men).
I will write and reblog whumpy stuff on this blog including original pieces, prompt fills, and fanfic.
Here is an example of the sort of stuff I write:-
The hot sun felt like fire on his open welts. He grimaced at the pain but no sound came from his lips. It wasn’t just because he no longer had the strength to scream in agony. It was also that he had nothing left except for his silence. It was all that anchored him to the world of the living, a world where he had been loved and cherished perhaps in a different lifetime-- the world that had meant everything to him before it was reduced to this 4 X 6 cage.
Once. Only once he had given Bhallaladeva the satisfaction of hearing the sound of his pain.
“If I scream, will you then let them go?,” he had asked him. “What have these poor villagers done to you?”
“Nothing,” Bhalla had answered. “It is the mere fact that they smile for you, cry for you, and would even die for you. But you’re a nobody. And I want them to see that. Scream for me and maybe I will let them go.”
And so, he had screamed. When the hundredth lash of the whip came down on his unprotected back. When he was forced to walk in chains over hot coals to get back to his cage. When ice-cold water was thrown on him again and again in the middle of winter on his naked, fevered flesh. And when finally, his thumbs were chopped off and the remaining stubs were cauterized with hot irons.
He had screamed. And the villagers had screamed with him.
After that, they had been allowed to leave. And they were never called back again. He had been forced back into his cage, never allowed to leave. Bhallaladeva had made it clear to him that he would be responsible for a genocide if he ever tried to leave.
"They will stay safe as long as you remain in front of my eyes, right here. Attempt an escape and the people who welcomed you after your banishment will wish they'd never been born."
Baahubali-- the one with strong arms-- became balaheen; the one with no strength. But mercifully, he didn’t have to force himself to scream anymore. Silence was easier. There was simplicity in silence. It was his only refuge, the only thing that didn’t scream back at him.
The whumpee here is a benevolent and kind king who has been imprisoned for 25 years by his brother. This is an AU. In the original story, his wife was imprisoned after he was murdered brutally on the orders of the evil brother. You really should watch this. It is on Netflix. It is called Baahubali. There are two parts.

I would love to talk to more angst and hurt/comfort writers. Come say hi!
And oh, here is the series if you would like to read it.

❝ Hey there lovelies,
You guys are STARS for making me reach this milestone!! I’m still surprised that this blog has reached so far ((given the terribly mixed bag of content i post)) but I’m grateful to each one of you for bringing it to this point. I owe you all one and I thought I would do a little giveaway. To appreciate you guys for sticking by me despite all the weird things I post, for standing all my rants and for staying even when I take my own sweet time finding my way back to the blog. Each one of you is so damn special. What wouldn’t I give to know you all individually?! That’s why I’m making this a wee bit personal. I will take a single request from each one of you, be it an edit or a drabble fanfic of anything of your preference from my fandoms. You can always check my navigation for links to them or read under the cut. I will take requests till the end of this month, Sep’18 :) Finished requests can be found here.
Send one of the following to make a request here ⇢

Ps. For drabble requests, please read under the cut.
I will write for baahubali, klaroline, got7, marvel cinematic universe, indian mythology, harry potter and any south indian cinema that I have watched or know of. Send me a number from the following and the pairing (character x character/reader, or a ship from the fandom) you like and you’re welcome to add any other details you want to include like a particular scenario, a fusion or alternate universe. Cheers :)
1. “Do you want me to leave?” 2. “I swear it won’t happen again.” 3. “I’m not jealous.” 4. “You can’t keep doing this.” 5. “I’m going to take care of you, okay?” 6. “You can’t die. Please don’t die.” 7. “You did what?!” 8. “Were you ever going to tell me?” 9. “Don’t ask me that.” 10. “I might have had a few shots.” 11. “What’s with the box?” 12. “Say it!” 13. “I could kiss you right now!” 14. “Are you done with that?” 15. “Are you still awake…?” 16. “Excuse you?” 17. “This is all your fault!” 18. “I shouldn’t be in love with you.” 19. “I could kill you right now!” 20. “Just admit I’m right.” 21. “That doesn’t even make sense.” 22. “That’s irrational.” 23. “Just pretend to be my date.” 24. “Are you really going to leave without asking me the question you’ve been dying to ask me?” 25. “When you love someone, you don’t just stop. Ever. Even when people roll their eyes or call you crazy… even then. Especially then!” 26. “I think I’ve been holding myself from falling in love with you all over again.” 27. “I’m not going to apologise for this. Not anymore.” 28. “That’s almost exactly the opposite of what I meant.” 29. “It must be hard with your sense of direction, never being able to find your way to a decent pickup line.” 30. “Can I sit here? The other tables are full.” 31. “You weren’t supposed to laugh!” 32. “This is, by far, the dumbest thing you’ve ever done.” 33. “I’m not going to stop poking you until you give me some attention.” 34. “These stars are nothing compared to the ones I’ve seen in your eyes.” 35. “Before I do this, I need you to know that I have always loved you.” 36. “Did I say that out loud?” 37. “Do you think they could have loved me?” 38. “Everyone keeps telling me you’re the bad guy.” 39. “How long have you been standing there?” 40. “Have I ever lied to you?” 41. “Have you lost your fucking mind?” 42. “His ego is so visible; I can almost watch it grow.” 43. “I am not losing you again!” 44. “I don’t know why I’m crying.” 45. “I had a nightmare about you and I just wanted to make sure you’re okay.” 46. “I just need to be alone right now.” 47. “When I picture myself happy… It’s with you.” 48. “I made a mistake.” 49. “I may be an idiot, but I’m your idiot.” 50. “I need you to forgive me.” 51. “I see the way you look at me when you think I’m not looking.” 52. “I think I’m in love with you and that scares me half to death.” 53. “I’m flirting with you.” 54. “I’m not good enough for you.” 55. “I fell in love with my best friend.” 56. “I’m sorry, what? I keep getting lost in your eyes.” 57. “I’m up to the challenge.” 58. “I’ve been in love with you my entire life. Ever since the day I first met you.” 59. “I’m yours.” 60. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were trying to seduce me.” 61. “If you go anywhere near them, you’ll have to deal with me!” 62. “It’s okay to cry…” 63. “What do you mean? It’s exciting!” 64. “Talk to me.” 65. “Look at me—just breathe, okay?” 66. “Look, I don’t have much time, but I wanted to say I love you.” 67. “Oh my god! You’re in love with them!” 68. “Well, this is where I live.” 69. “We finish it the same way we started—together.” 70. “What are you afraid of?” 71. “You are the single best thing that has ever happened to me.” 72. “You deserve so much better.” 73. “You don’t have to stay.” 74. “You don’t know you the way I do.” 75. “You fainted, straight into my arms. You know, if you wanted my attention, you didn’t have to go to such extremes.” 76. “You need to wake up because I can’t do this without you.” 77. “You shouldn’t have even been there!” 78. “You weren’t supposed to hear that.” 79. “You’re safe now. I’ve got you.” 80. “Teach me?” 81. “We’re in the middle of a thunderstorm and you want to stop and feel the rain?” 82. “Looks like we’ll be stuck here for a while.” 83. “Just once.” 84. “I can’t believe you talked me into this.” 85. “It’s not what it looks like.” 86. “I got you a present.” 87. “Hey! I was gonna eat that!” 88. “See, now, what that so bad?”.” 89. “You’re the best part of me.” 90. “I don’t want to think about what I’d be like without you.” 91. “Can I hold your hand?” 92. “Let’s move in together.” 93. “It’s a real shame nobody asked for your opinion.” 94. “What time is it?” 95. “Just wait a second.” 96. “Here, let me.” 97. “You’re so cute when you pout like that.” 98. “Hold me back!’ 99. “I don’t care what they said, it doesn’t mean shit!” 100. “I adore you.”

My alternative 90th Academy Awards
So here’s another annual tradition... my alternative Oscars ceremony. This is what this Sunday’s Oscars would look like if I – and I alone – stuffed the ballots and decided on all of the nominations and winners. Non-English language films are accompanied by their nation of origin (in FIFA three-letter code).
90th Academy Awards – March 4, 2018 Dolby Theatre – Hollywood, Los Angeles, California Host: Jimmy Kimmel Broadcaster: ABC
Best Picture: LADY BIRD
The Breadwinner, Anthony Leo, Tomm Moore, Andrew Rosen, and Paul Young (Cartoon Saloon/GKIDS)
Call Me by Your Name, Peter Spears, Luca Guadagnino, Emilie Georges, Rodrigo Teixeira, Marco Morabito, James Ivory, and Howard Rosenman (Sony Pictures Classics)
Coco, Darla K. Anderson (Pixar/Walt Disney)
Dunkirk, Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan (Warner Bros.)
Faces Places (FRA), Rosalie Varda (Le Pacte/Cohen Media Group)
The Florida Project, Sean Baker, Chris Bergoch, Kevin Chinoy, Andrew Duncan, Alex Saks, Francesca Silvestri, and Shih-Ching Tsou (A24)
Lady Bird, Scott Rudin, Eli Bush, and Evelyn O’Neil (A24)
Phantom Thread, Paul Thomas Anderson, Megan Ellison, JoAnne Sellar, and Daniel Lupi, (Focus/Universal)
The Post, Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Amy Pascal (20th Century Fox)
The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro and J. Miles Dale (Fox Searchlight Pictures)
Out of the running in real life are Darkest Hour, Three Billboards, and Get Out. And taking the maximum of ten spots, in their place enter The Breadwinner, Coco, Faces Places, The Florida Project. That’s two animated movies, a documentary, and a neglected critical darling... come at me? I was lukewarm over Darkest Hour, pissed off over Three Billboards, and I honestly don’t think Get Out is as effective a horror movie or a commentary on racial relations that it wants to be.
Lady Bird would be my winner, with Phantom Thread your runner-up and either Faces Places or The Shape of Water as your third spot. For Lady Bird, it would be harder to find a movie with as much empathy as it this calendar year. Maybe not the most technically gifted filmmaking of the nominees, but it accomplishes its conceit with an open ear and an open heart. Bravo.
I noticed that I don’t have time to write on all the Best Picture nominees anymore, like in years past. I only got to Dunkirk and The Post  – both of which are on the outside looking in.
Best Director
Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water
Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird
Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk
Dee Rees, Mudbound
Agnès Varda and JR, Faces Places
CONTROVERSY. Dee Rees nominated in Director, but Mudbound isn’t nominated for Picture! In all honesty, I couldn’t find the excuse to nudge Mudbound out for any of the nominees I placed above. But to focus on the positive, del Toro is going to make it three Mexican Best Director winners in the last four years... that is exhilarating. Nolan is my close second choice here, and falters a bit because I didn’t personally enjoy the structure of Dunkirk all that much.
Best Actor
Timothée Chalamet, Call Me by Your Name
Daniel Day-Lewis, Phantom Thread
Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out
Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour
Andy Serkis, War for the Planet of the Apes
No CMBYN fans, there will not be any justice for you on my blog either. Because the best performance of the year by an actor of a leading role was done in motion capture... it was Andy Serkis as Caesar in War for the Planet of the Apes. It’s been high time to honor Serkis in what is his best work – aside from his performances as Gollum – to date.
Best Actress
Ahn Seo-hyun, Okja
Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water
Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird
Meryl Streep, The Post
The quieter performances aren’t going to win at this year’s Oscars. McDormand’s flashier performance in Three Billboards will overshadow Hawkins’ nuanced, silent performance in SoW. That’s wrong to me, as I think Hawkins does so much physically that is so taxing for any actor that would dare take a role like that. South Korean child actress Ahn Seo-hyun just sneaks in for Okja.
Best Supporting Actor
Willem Dafoe, The Florida Project
Woody Harrelson, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Richard Jenkins, The Shape of Water
Bob Odenkirk, The Post
Christopher Plummer, All the Money in the World
My least favorite acting category this year. So I’ll toss it to Dafoe for The Florida Project... who, on Sunday, is probably going to lose to a flashier performance in Sam Rockwell for Three Billboards (who shouldn’t have been nominated). Plummer and Odenkirk are in a close battle for second.
Best Supporting Actress
Mary J. Blige, Mudbound
Tiffany Haddish, Girls Trip
Allison Janney, I, Tonya
Lesley Manville, Phantom Thread
Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird
This is Manville v. Metcalf for me. And for playing the deeply layered, deeply conflicted, tough-love mother in Lady Bird, this has to be Metcalf for me. It is ta transcendent supporting actress performance. And yes, I snuck Tiffany Haddish in here... because why not?
Best Adapted Screenplay
James Ivory, Call Me by Your Name
Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, The Disaster Artist
Scott Frank, James Mangold, and Michael Green, Logan
Dee Rees and Virgil Williams, Mudbound
Aaron Sorkin, Molly’s Game
If I ran the Oscars, the 89-year-old James Ivory wouldn’t have won an Oscar by now either. I hate to type that, but timing is a funny thing! Fate and time are funny things, aren’t they? This category isn’t close. Dee Rees makes history as the first nominated black woman in this category!
Best Original Screenplay
Paul Thomas Anderson, Phantom Thread
Sean Baker and Chris Bergoch, The Florida Project
Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird
Liz Hannah and Josh Singer, The Post
Jordan Peele, Get Out
I’ve already commented how much I think Get Out is more flawed a movie than most believe. This comes down to Anderson and Gerwig for me... and my Best Picture winner, I think, is blessed with the screenplay of the year for capturing a time, a place, and its characters at a certain point in their lives so wonderfully.
Best Animated Feature
The Breadwinner (Cartoon Saloon/GKIDS)
Coco (Pixar/Walt Disney)
The Girl Without Hands, France (Shellac/GKIDS)
Loving Vincent (Next Film/Good Deed Entertainment)
Mary and the Witch’s Flower, Japan (Studio Ponoc/GKIDS)
SHOCKER. For me, I was considering a tie in this category (which has happened six times in Academy Awards history... so I guess I have to save it for once every fifteen ceremonies or something) between Breadwinner (write-up) and Coco (write-up). This would be Cartoon Saloon’s first win in my alternate universe... in that same alternative universe for 2009, The Secret of Kells would’ve lost to Up; for 2014, Song of the Sea would’ve lost to eventual Best Picture winner The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.
Coco fans, don’t despair though. Keep reading... because your movie isn’t going home empty-handed.
I totally disrespected Ferdinand and Boss Baby didn’t I?
Best Documentary Feature
Abacus: Small Enough to Jail (Kartemquin Films/Public Broadcasting Service)
Faces Places, France (Le Pacte/Cohen Media Group)
Jane (National Geographic)
LA92 (National Geographic)
Last Men in Aleppo (Aleppo Media Center/Larm Film/Grasshopper Film)
I don’t think this would be Agnès Varda’s first Oscar in my alternative universe? I’ll get to doing the 1960s someday. :P
Best Foreign Language Film
Faces Places, France
The Insult, Lebanon
Loveless, Russia
Mary and the Witch’s Flower, Japan
The Square, Sweden
Best Cinematography
Roger Deakins, Blade Runner 2049
Janusz Kaminski, The Post
Rachel Morrison, Mudbound
Jonathan Ricquebourg, The Death of Louis XIV (FRA)
Hoyte Van Hoytema, Dunkirk
Morrison makes history by being the first female nominee in this category and as its first winner. Sorry Roger Deakins! You probably would’ve won earlier in my alternative universe anyways.
Best Film Editing
Michael Kahn, The Post
Paul Machliss and Jonathan Amos, Baby Driver
Gregory Plotkin, Get Out
Lee Smith, Dunkirk
Sidney Wolinsky, The Shape of Water
Best Original Musical*
M.M. Keeravani, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion
Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Coco
Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, The Greatest Showman
*NOTE: Best Original Musical – known previously as several other names – exists in the Academy’s rulebooks, but requires activation from the music branch given that there are enough eligible films. To qualify, a film must have no fewer than five original songs. This category was last activated when Prince won for Purple Rain (1984).
You know, this might change some day if I sit down and watch Baahubali 2. I’ve listened to the soundtrack, but I haven’t seen the songs in context. Sorry Indian cinema fans! Coco fans must be getting mighty mad at me for now... but Coco’s musical score – outside of two original songs (“Remember Me” and “Proud Corazón”) and one non-original song (“La Llorana”) – isn’t the best out of context. The Greatest Showman – I think Pasek and Paul are far better lyricists than they are composers (and yes, that’s a problem) – has songs that do very well in and out of context, and takes the win in this category.
Best Original Score
Alexandre Desplat, The Shape of Water
Alexandre Desplat, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
Michael Giacchino, War for the Planet of the Apes
John Williams, The Post
John Williams, Star Wars: The Last Jedi
It really comes down to Valerian, Apes, and Jedi. And in this titanic battle over science fiction and space opera, it is Desplat for the much-maligned Valerian taking the Oscar home. The score combines seamlessly enormous orchestral and electronic elements to a degree that I haven’t heard from Desplat yet. It barely edges Williams for The Last Jedi... which benefits from some of Williams’ best action scoring in years and a repackaging of older themes in ways showing off the dexterity of the maestro. Giacchino is third, with Desplat for SoW in fourth, and The Post in fifth. Jonny Greenwood for Phantom Thread is the first man out.
Best Original Song
“Mighty River”, music by Raphael Saadiq; lyrics by Mary J. Blige, Saadiq, and Taura Stinson, Mudbound
“A Million Dreams”, music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, The Greatest Showman
“Mystery of Love”, music and lyrics by Sufjan Stevens, Call Me by Your Name
“Remember Me (Recuérdame)”, music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, Coco
“This Is Me”, music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, The Greatest Showman
Also proudly the winner of the 2017 Movie Odyssey Award for Best Original Song (some of you know what that means), “Remember Me (Recuérdame)” has everything you want – interesting musicality (even though I still think that descending line, which begins with “For ever if I’m far away / I hold you in my heart” sounds far more like something Randy Newman would compose than something distinctly Mexican) meaningful lyrics, layers of meaning within the movie it comes from, and a life of its own when separated from that movie.
Showstopper “This Is Me” comes a distant second, with the others in a scrum for crumbs. I really like “A Million Dreams”, though. My sister will take me to task over how much I enjoyed The Greatest Showman’s soundtrack (which I enjoyed despite finding it musically uninteresting).
Best Costume Design
Jacqueline Durran, Beauty and the Beast
Jen Wasson, The Beguiled
Nina Avramovic, The Death of Louis XIV
Mark Bridges, Phantom Thread
Luis Sequeira, The Shape of Water
Best Makeup & Hairstyling

Top Grossing Action Films of Bollywood and Hollywood
Tumblr media
(Press imagery from Baahubali 2: The Conclusion)
This blog post was originally going to be a comparison of the highest worldwide box office grossing action films from several top box office grossing countries in the world. Unfortunately, these statistics are not readily available, and statistics I could find were widely varying and unreliably inconsistent. For the sake of accurate statistics and reliable data, I chose instead to look only at the highest worldwide grossing action film in India, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, and analyze it in comparison it to the highest worldwide grossing action film from America, Avatar. Since Bollywood and Hollywood are so intertwined and related as the central film industry of each country, I believe this to be a valuable comparison that will effectively show how the two top films from each country are related.
youtube
(SS Rajamouli Interview - YouTube video featuring an interview with the director of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion talking about the process of making his film)
The environments of both countries’ cinema industries are very different, especially through history. America and India have individual cultures and societies that have developed separately over a long period of time, and these unique qualities make each country distinct and unlike any other. The way the two countries’ societies developed had a great impact on the cinemas of Hollywood and Bollywood. The two are seen as pseudo-rivals, or opposite sides of the same coin. Indian cinema often draws content and inspiration from American films, and the biggest source of American content used is the action film genre.
youtube
(Avatar: Interview with James Cameron - YouTube video with James Cameron describing the development and behind-the-scenes process of making Avatar)
The majority of action film narrative development occurred in America. Our country’s history is steeped in narratives of action. As westerns developed as a genre, so too did detective films, crime films, war films, superhero films, and action comedy films, among others. American action films have inspired many directors globally. As the action film genre developed and progressed, so too did the industry itself. Hollywood grew into the massive industry of today due largely in part to strong performing action films.
Tumblr media
(Screenshot from Avatar)
The highest grossing box office films in the entire world are American action movies. For example, the number one top worldwide box office results are for the movie, Avatar, a 2009 action film directed by James Cameron. According to data from website boxofficemojo.com, Avatar’s worldwide box office gross amounts to a record breaking 2.8 billion dollars. This number is a historical high, beating any film previously released. The highest grossing film from India is Baahubali 2: The Conclusion . This film has a worldwide box office gross of approximately 254 million in United States Dollar converted. These two numbers show an incredible statistic. The numbers relate how the genre highest from each country is separated by a factor of 10. On its own, 254 million is an incredible amount of money, but it is still only one tenth of Avatar’s global gross.
Tumblr media
(Promotional Poster for Baahubali 2: The Conclusion )
Tumblr media
(Poster for Star Wars as a comparison of imagery)
It is known that Indian cinema draws lots of inspiration from America. Hollywood influence can can even be seen in the two film posters above, as the design for Baahubali 2: The Conclusion imitates the iconic poster imagery from the Star Wars films, originally designed by artist Tom Chantrell. Of course, many contemporary films in America and India try to replicate the Star Wars poster style because it is simply a very successful, effective, and pleasant design.
youtube
(Eye Dancing and India’s Ancient Art of Kathakali - YouTube video that discusses an Indian performance art that is important to Bollywood film history)
To analyze more deeply into the context of the two films, one must look at the background of the genre and narrative history of both Avatar and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion . Avatar is a mixture of action, science fiction, drama, and romance. This mixture of genres is analogous to America’s history. Our country was founded by immigrants and built by hard working people from around the world. America’s mixed cultural background is very similar to the mixture of different film genres in Avatar . Its wide appeal to many different audiences and demographics led to its immense success. In contrast, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is a more simple mixture of genres, action and drama. The story is an epic, historical tale that tells the story of the struggles of a royal family. Indian narrative history has many epic tales passed on through the generations. This film uses India’s rich history of stories as a background for the plot, which helps foreign viewers of the film be able to appreciate the long history of the country and the way people convey information in narratives.
Narrative is a very important way that culture and history is kept alive. While India has a heritage of tall tales and epics, so too does America. Both countries pass down their stories and begin new ones as well. Cinema is the new storytelling method, and it’s here to stay. Action films are just one piece of the puzzle, and successful films will continue to pass on information about all cultures around the world.

Why Baahubali’s Death Kills Me Each Time
Submitted by: @carminavulcana
I watched the Baahubali series with my non-Indian family and they are not really into Indian cinema. They watched Baahubali because we’d all heard good things about it and even though I hadn’t finished watching the films by myself, I was already in love with Amarendra.
They watched the first film and my American grandpa, Allen said, “He’s Superman. That’s who he is. He can do anything.” Meanwhile, Judith, the grandma was looking at something else. “I see why you like him so much. He is hot. He is good. He is brave. But... he is a bit boring, isn’t he?”
And they were absolutely right. Amarendra is indeed a classic Marty Sue (the male equivalent of a Mary Sue.)
But that did not stop me, Allen, and Judith from crying when he died. And I do mean we cried, with real tears. I think I even ugly-cried but I’ll spare you details.
It felt like Steve Trevor’s death in Wonder Woman (2017) or the almost-death of Superman in Superman Returns (2006).
And that was striking. Because despite being a classic good guy (Much like Chris Pine’s Steve and Brandon Routh’s Clark), Amarendra Baahubali meant something to us personally. As humans, we find stock good characters boring in fiction but in real life, those are exactly the people we want around us.
They represent a better version of our own selves. That, and hope.
Amarendra was a symbol of everything the citizens of Mahishmati (and the audience) want for themselves, look for in others, and worship in the form of legendary heroes and deities.
For a woman like me, there were things about him that were so amazingly trivial and yet so vital. Like when he quickly instructed Devasena on how to shoot three arrows in one go instead of asking her to fall back. Or when he said to her, “I am yours,” instead of the usual “You are mine.” Or when he offered his own arms for her to use as a bridge so she could get into the boat. Or when he sacrificed his right to the throne for a promise given to his wife. Or when he finally gave up everything he had ever held dear in order to see that a sexual harasser was not allowed to go scot-free.
I love the fact that he is a Feminist, a very secure individual, and completely at ease with himself. And oh, did I mention, I am completely in love with his kindness.
These are stereotypical traits for most heroic characters. But funnily enough, even with all the six-packs and the battle scenes, the film did not feel like a testosterone-fueled orgy of machoism.
All because the hero himself, thankfully, was not an Alpha male in my humble opinion. He was a natural leader because that’s what he did best. But he was an equally good worker and he did not need to be the head of the pack in order to be its spiritual center. He was happy to help as a miner, an engineer, a teacher, a counselor, and when the need arose, a judge.
The song Dandalayya/Jai Jaikara exemplified this beautifully.
To see his life cut short so brutally, just after his son’s birth, to see him lose everything for the last time in his life, and to know that the betrayal came from the very people who had sworn to love him and protect him-- that is the heart of the matter.
The murder of Baahubali is a metaphor for the murder of our hopes. And let’s be honest, each one of us hopes for something, sometimes, even things we know better than to truly expect.
And for those of us with relationship, trust, and abandonment issues, Baahu’s death is a reflection of what happens too often in our world.
That is why we weep every time.
We grieve for him, for Devasena, and for Mahendra. But mostly, we grieve for ourselves.

FILMY, NOT SO FLIMSY?
This post explores the changing DNA of movie-goers, and what their shifting preferences tell us about which kinds of stories will connect with them.
India has always been a hero-worshipping country, literally. It is no secret that every time SRK spread his arms wide open, audiences rushed to the theatres; Salman’s kicks and punches caused stampedes; Rajnikant’s antics whipped the crowds up into a frenzy. These revered stars were seemingly indestructible and paramount in bringing viewers into cinema houses. Producers knew that casting superstars was a sure-fire way of raking in monies and star-studded movies crossing the multi-million rupee mark was par for the course, becoming a revenue-generating strategy that worked through the 90’s and the ‘00s.
2018, however, has been a revelatory year in this regard. Star vehicles that were deemed surefire blockbusters came a cropper at the box office.
The biggest blow was taken by Thugs of Hindostan which barely recovered half its spends, despite starring Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan, two legendary actors. Salman Khan failed to cast his characteristic spell on his fans this year and lost the race (pun intended, of course). SRK’s Zero underperformed in the first week of its release. By contrast, medium-budget movies like Andhadhun, Raazi, Sonu ke Titu ki Sweety, all headlined by competent actors rather than bona-fide superstars, struck a chord with the audiences. Movies like Sanju, which portrayed the questionable choices that the protagonist makes and the consequences that he faces as a result, did well. So did movies that explored untouched issues or drove home a social message in an original manner – Badhai Ho addressed the discomfort that Indians have in coming to terms with the sex lives of mature couples; Stree was a reminder for society to treat women with dignity.
Story has clearly outperformed starcasts. Is this a testimony of changing preferences in changing times? What has triggered this shift? Why is ‘content’ becoming the hero of a system long-dominated by clout?
One of the key factors could be more people accessing, downloading and watching more content. In the past, film makers drew a clear line between how they defined audiences and sensibilities for ‘mainstream’ and ‘parallel’ cinema. The mainstream viewers were seen as lapping up glamorous, aspirational, massy content i.e. movies driven by movie stars. Whereas parallel cinema goers were considered more ‘evolved’ and more discerning about stories and plotlines. But YouTube, streaming platforms and OTT platforms like Amazon, Netflix and Hotstar have democratized access to original and unique content. All kinds of stories are being streamed into India’s different nodes, pockets and corners, thanks to the rapidly increasing penetration of smartphones coupled with affordable data connections. The so-called ‘masses’ are now in a position to consume relevant and realistic stories that do more than piggyback on a star’s credibility. With scale inherent in the digital distribution model, viewers of all stripes are gravitating to different types of content, and the old mainstream/ parallel distinction has all but collapsed.
There is another, more generational lens that can be applied to this shift. Hundreds of surveys and thinkpieces tell us that Millennials and Gen Z seek to create change, particularly when it comes to issues that matter to them. They speak their mind, question norms and bring about revolutions, one tweet and click at a time. Popular cinema as escapism perhaps doesn’t have the appeal it once did. Audiences of this newer generation are seeking out grounded and rooted content, perhaps arising from their ability to accept and deal with grim actualities; couple with a desire to see everday aspirations, struggles and achievements mirrored by the media. Millennial audiences want to see people and situations that they can relate to.
And it’s not just about plotlines, it’s also about this generation’s relationships to movie-stars. Actors are easily accessible, especially on digital forums. Social media gives viewers unrestricted access to their favourite celebrities - there is more familiarity and less intrigue, thereby reducing the ‘hero-quotient’ associated with stars. Unlike previous generations, new-age aduiences do not put icons on a permanent pedestal. They assess them on a movie-to-movie basis. They evaluate them for the character that they play rather than the ‘superstar’ that they are.
All of which points to a signficant shift that’s playing on movie-makers’ minds, demonstrated by public statements about how rich content is taking precedence over popular actors -
“I feel that scripts are bankable now; not so much as ‘Oh, this actor is bankable.’” – Rhea Kapoor, in an interview on Koffee with Karan.
“It has been a very different kind of year (for Bollywood). The films that have performed well and even been appreciated seem to be talking about our issues, dwelling less in fantasies and more in reality.” – Actor-Director Farhan Akhtar, in an interview with PTI.
Rohit Shetty in a long-length interview to the Bombay Times as part of the promotional blitz for his latest movie actually said that massy, star-driven movies were Bollywood’s newest ‘risk.’ Prajakta Deshmukh, the director of the Marathi play Devbabhali that has won many awards, spoke about how the success of her play lies in a strong storyline.
But does that mean that fantasy as a genre is dying? Definitely not!
Block busters like Baahubali and billion-dollar Marvel movies are proof enough that audiences still love science-fiction and fantasy, but they want to watch it by choice. What works with these viewers is realism in the screenplay – whether in the portrayal of characters, in the execution, or both. Viewers appreciate contexts that come close to their lives in some way and characters they can resonate with. We are no longer addressing starry-eyed masses who will accept a beau ideal. We are catering to an audience who believes that the story is the hero. The need of the hour is a strong, relatable premise and an antithesis of the traditional Bollywood hero who is flawless, can beat up a hundred goons or make any girl swoon to his tunes – someone who reflects life as it is lived by many, if not all of us.

Hi!! I'm a regular reader of your live blogs for both IB and DBO! I just kinda realized this and legit didn't know who else to share this with but it blew my mind. My dad was playing stuff from youtube on our tv, and since we're telugu, it was "Jayaho Janatha" from the 2016 Telugu movie Janatha Garage. Idk if anyone else has mentioned it, BUT THE FIRST COUPLE SECONDS OF THE SONG ARE EXACTLY(?) LIKE THE BG FOR OM IN FIRST DBO EPISODE?! I just wanted confirmation from another person :)
Hi @lovesmilesbackatu!
OMG YESSSSSSSSS IT ISSSSSSSSSSSSSS THE EXACT SAME MUSICCCCCCC!!!!!! 😯😯😯
For anyone who wants a listen:
youtube
(Lol, it’s kinda hilarious to hear Sukhwinder Singh singing in Telugu. Is he getting the pronunciation right? I feel like it’s not 100% correct. 🤔🤔🤔)
Ha, how cool (and kinda hilarious and… unexpected) that they used something from a South Indian film!! (Though I’m kinda iffy/mad when the mainstream “North” takes stuff from the South Indian industries and doesn’t attribute due credit. The South Indian industries are so underrated. Hopefully the success of the Baahubali franchise will make more people interested in our stuff. 😌😌😌)

I GOT TAGGED BY 5 PEOPLE FOR THAT QUESTIONS MEME !!
So that’s 55 questions answered below, ((its soooper long and contains every single truth about my dorkery and pagan ritual and what not.. I'm not a cool person, nope, see for yourself))
Questions from @iwearplaids
Rain or snow ?
Rain, hands down. Snow is just pretty, covers the ground beautifully in white and then melts away. But Rain, rain enhances that smell of earth I love so much and brings forth memories of the time I used to sit on my balcony with a cup of tea, hot bajjis and my friends from college days.
What is/was your favourite subject at school ?
History. I used to finish reading each lesson as if I was reading a story book before our teacher was even half way through it. I used to be the cause of her headache, she almost always took my book away each time so I won’t do it. And Art, we had an art professor who was the first one to take notice of my sketching talents and helped me improve it. In one way or the other, its because of them that I am a Conservation Architect today!!
How would you rate your own blog ?
11/10. It needs a little more organizing and I will give it a fifteen :P
What is the most comforting smell for you ?
Smell of well washed pure cotton fabrics... reminds me of my mumma.
Top 3 fears
Darkness. Dark deep waterbodies. Losing a loved one without a proper goodbye.
Tell an embarrassing story.
Happens on a daily basis really... do you want to hear about the time I almost sat on Rana’s lap and scared him enough that he chose to sit on top of the armrest of the couch instead; or when I got locked out in the utility room of my house by my own silliness, without my mobile on me and had to wait till my flatmate (and the rest of my friends) came home and opened the door while I smiled at them like a dork from the other side of the glass door; or that one time I was standing on my terrace watching a meteor shower and my mum thought I was doing some kind of pagan ritual and took a video of it cause I was dancing around with a long stick in my hand facing up at the sky, while I was actually hopping in circles and spinning the stick around myself to escape mosquitoes...
Last book that you read and fell in love with.
The Great Derangement by Amitav Ghosh. Its the first of his non-fiction works I read and wow, it made me think deep and agree with his point that future history will call our period the most deranged of all times. Its about climate disaster and a must read in my opinion, I’m glad I picked it up at the airport while I was bored. With that said, his The Hungry Tide is one of my favourite books.
Your all time favourite movie ?
Kannathil Muthamittal (A Peck on The Cheek)
Would you say that you’re popular in real life ?
Yep, yes. People find my (child like) enthusiasm contagious and I can listen better than I talk (that’s what my friends say). So yeah, I’m kind of always surrounded by people mostly... unless I push them away myself to breathe.
Favourite accessory ?
Um... anklets? Oh no, I love bangles. Although, I barely wear any accessories. Its a surprise if I wear anything more than my usual earrings.
Flats or heels ?
Shoes or boots with heels. I’m short. I need that extra boost to bounce around on my happy feet.
Questions from @ruminationsofaraven
Coffee or Tea?
Tea. Always.
All time favourite book and T.V show.
Harry Potter series and Scooby Doo.
What would you rather choose to write about - Smut or Fluff?
Fluffy fluff that will soon turn angsty.
Spookiest story you’ve heard when you were a kid.
I have lived through three spooky experiences. I don’t need a story to top them. *shudders*
If you get a chance to change three things you regret doing in your life with a time-turner, what’d you choose to do?
Go back in time to when I met Rana and make sure I proposed to him rather than chickening out I guess?? Other than that, there isn’t anything I regret much except maybe knock my second boyfriend down in one clean punch before he even asked me out.
Have you ever dreamt about getting interviewed on the Ellen show?
Oh yes. Many many times!!
Fuck/Marry/Kill (Marvel Special) - Loki, Captain America & Bucky
Fuck Loki, Marry Captain America... and kill Bucky (yikes sorry)
Ever embarrassed yourself in front of a crush?
A lot. There was this one time in school where I was gushing about my crush to my friend and he was... well, sitting right behind me and heard the entire thing. Funny story, he’s my best ever friend right now and knows me better than my mum and I’m the Best Woman (maapillai thozhi) for his upcoming wedding!!
One Disney character who you can relate with irl.
Merida from Brave. You have no idea how much similar that movie is to my life LMAO
Have you ever stalked an ex?
Nope, I don’t dwell in the past. And except one asshat, the rest of my exes are still my friends (acquaintance).
Swap yourself with a character on a T.V show and that would be? Also, do you think you’ll survive in that universe.
Arya from Game of Thrones maybe. Oh yes, I would be a savage and kill everyone and win the iron throne for myself before dying at the white walkers’ hands, stabbed in the back cause I most probably was running away screaming bloody murder upon seeing them...
Questions from @fierarain
If you were given a chance to play God for a day, what would you do?
Kill off everyone I think that don’t deserve to live (you know who, mostly all those politicians). Save every child from disease and dying. Change people’s mindset and make them think about saving the Earth instead of destroying it. Make Harry Potter world exist for real. Read every book in the world if it was possible... and wish all of this could happen with a single snap of my fingers.
What’s your favorite quote?
“What you seek is seeking you.” and  “Stop acting so small. You are the universe in ecstatic motion.” - both by Rumi
What disgusts you the most?
Worms. And people who lack common sense.
What motivates you to get out of bed everyday?
Food. And the possibility of some unexpected unknown happening.
Describe any custom/ritual/tradition unique to your family/region/community.
My family is from the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu and during weddings which mostly happens in our ancestral houses, the groom ties three different thaalis (mangal sutras) around the bride’s neck. And its like small, medium and large in size - like the cups we request at Starbucks... I find that extremely funny by the way!!
What part of the day do you look forward to and why?
Night. I love the stars. They make me wonder how much of a lie time is. The one twinkling cheerfully at me, does it still brighten up the galaxy or has it faded long back and I’m just seeing the ghost of its life standing this far away...
If given a chance to swap lives with someone, whom would you choose?
No one. I love my life, I’d pass that chance on.
Who/What is the center of your universe?
Rana?? Kidding... I am the center of my universe (and sometimes my family too).
What’s your happiest memory?
Picking Bakula flowers from the ground around a hundred year old tree with my cousins in the house back in our village... and then playing with them in the courtyard while it rained. I had a blessed childhood!!

Favorite myth?
Every time it thunders scarily, Arjuna is mad and stomping around the heavens like a crazy elephant. And wishes made upon shooting stars do come true!!
The main characters of the last two movies/TV shows you watched have switched places. What madness ensues?
Oh my god, the last two movies I watched was Aramm and Nene Raju Nene Mantri (re watch). Nayanthara and Rana’s roles swapped would be epic on one hand but also disastrous?? Like the corrupt Jogendra in Aramm scenario might have not done anything about the child, or that child could have been his redemption and he might have turned out to be better, I honestly don’t know... Now Madhivadhani in NRNM, I think we will get to see that madness for real in Aramm 2 when it releases. Although, she is a no-shit no-nonsense person and has her heart and mind in the right place (unlike Jogendra) !!!
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Anywhere with my family around. Actually, some place that’s cold enough and has a beach. And of course, my family!!
Who would be the worst person to be stuck in an elevator with? How about the best person to be stuck in an elevator with?
The worst person to be stuck in an elevator with would be my brother, we would probably murder each other before help arrives. Best person would be… *drum rolls* RANA!!
If you could make a movie/TV series out of any book (or remake one if it exists already), what would it be?
There’s a book called “ஏழு தலை நகரம்” (ezhu thalai nagaram - seven headed city) in Tamil by S. Ramakrishnan. I would make that into a film for children.
What would be the title of your autobiography?
Stardust in search of her Star… Or Remembrall… or something decidedly more whacky depending upon the way I plan to write it.
Favorite poem?
This poem by Bharathiyar,
“ அக்கினி குஞ்சொன்று கண்டேன்-அதை ஆங்கொரு காட்டி லொர் பொந்திடை வைத்தேன் வெந்து தணிந்தது காடு-தழல் வீரத்தில் குஞ்சென்றும் மூப்பென்றும் உண்டோ?”
Translation: I found a small spark of fire and Placed it inside a burrow in a forest; The entire forest was burnt down to ashes; An ember is mighty enough regardless of it’s size!
Least favorite cliche/trope in fic or literature?
Love triangles. Or squares. Or Hexagon… its just over overused!!
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Be in places I want to be in the blink of my eye. I’m a lazy person in general, so that would help me get to places on time!!
If you could have dinner with any three fictional characters, who would they be and why?
Bhallaladeva, I would probably be next on his to-be-killed list for all the questions I ask over dinner. Baahubali, he’s gonna be a sweetheart really, but I would probably be ruthless and pry off his rose tinted glasses to make him see people for what they really are. Panchali, I know she’s not fictional but ever since I read Palace of Illusions, I have been wanting to know the real story from her perspective.
