Time to talk about That Cover

I wanna preface this by saying that I am only conversational in Japanese, not fluent, and in my utter excitement upon seeing the cover for the first time, already mistranslated it (mistaking 侵す for 傷, one meaning to 'to harm,' the other meaning 'injury.') My apologies but we're all losing our minds so les gooooo

I was about to go to sleep but this cover ruined my life

the title of this volume (fusegusha to okasusha) basically means "the one who protects and the one who harms," which is clearly a reference to Deku vs AFO-Shiggy

HOWEVER 'okasu' (侵す) can also mean to encroach, invade, violate, ect... implied to be inflicted on something inanimate, a possession... like, there are words that specifically mean to hurt people. That's not the word here.

hetero interpretation is that AFO-Shiggy is an invader on Yuuei terf and Deku is its defender

the gay implication is that Bakugou belongs to Midoriya

we do love a possessive Deku in this house

but what gets to me is that this volume uses the more traditional kanji for protector (禦 instead of the simplified 防)... anyone more fluent have a suggested reason for this choice?

cause for now I'm just going with Deku is badass and cool and we gon put some respect on his title as protector

The official heroaka twitter account captioned this cover with "倒れた爆豪を抱きとめるデクが目印です," which to my understanding (correct me if my colloquial translation is off) means "The image of Deku holding back a fallen Bakugou."

(Tho I am a bit confused by the way 抱き止め is used, because it implied restraining someone, holding them back from something... and if anything, Deku is the one holding himself back??? Again, correct me if I'm missing something)

I originally wanted to color this with alcohol markers and continue the traditional-only renditions I started on Day 26 but I had unwisely drawn this on the back of the page with scrapped sketches I did for this day and wanted to keep, so I had no choice to scan it in with my phone and color it digitally there. I sorta tried to mimic how I would color with the copics but... it ended up being a generic soft shading style I default to when I really want to move on.

i've been publicly drawing bakudeku for officially one year. technically for much longer, but this brainrot has been going for a whole year straight with no signs of stopping. so i figured i could show my bkdk day art from 2020 (left) vs from 2021 (right)! 2020's was traditional because i just switched to clip studio paint from paint tool sai and i didn't know how anything worked lol

during this past year we've seen significant canon strides in this ship which is freaking EPIC and i'm excited to see how their relationship develops even further. they were my og favorite characters from this series back when i first watched in 2017 and, unsurprisingly, they remain my favorites to this day :) deku has been my favorite character ever, not limited to this series, for a long time now and bakugou's character arc is personally one of the best ones out there. they mean a lot to me :') it's cheesy and totally lame but they have changed my life in very small but meaningful ways; thanks to them i've been inspired to improve on my art (as unnoticable as those improvements may be) and make new friends on the internet!

One more rambling because I can't get it out of my head:

Quirkless!vigilante!Izuku and Not a villain!Himiko, they're friends. They go pedophile hunting together, it's great.

But the Hero Commission hasn't lifted the ban on quirkless people going to hero schools, so Himiko goes instead.

So there are two threads. One is vigilante/informant Izuku, who is barely connected to the criminal underground and is instead plugged into the homeless network and gets his information that way. The other is former vigilante UA student Himiko, who accepts One For All after saving Uraraka during the entrance exam.

Himiko falls for Ochaco (Togachaco rights), has a passive aggressive friendship with Bakugou, makes friends with both the traditional Dekusquad and Bakusquad, and irrationally hates Aoyama for no reason. She's also more mentally stable because she doesn't have a blood deficiency.

The series goes somewhat as normal. At the USJ, Himiko accidentally kills the Nomu, whoopsies, and Izuku absolutely kicks Stain's ass. Also when the dorms are built, Izuku regularly sneaks onto UA campus to chill with Himiko (and also maybe fight/smooch Bakugou) to the confusion of everyone. Including Nedzu. That fact makes Aizawa terrified of the kid.

Especially when the class starts talking about body counts, Izuku cheerfully exclaims he has a lot before he pauses and says "Oh, you mean in bed," and begins recounting how he and Himiko used to go pedo hunting, where one of them would be the bait and the other one the killer. Himiko can't anymore but Izuku sure still does~

Anyways morally ambiguous Izuku and Himiko bromance, thank you and goodnight.

toga accepting ofa is such a wild concept i didn’t know i needed. because she’s actually really smart and strong and ferocious. she’s also very loyal. so ofa!toga, especially loved and raised in UA is just *ascends*

im having a crisis because ofc i want toga in class 1a because she’d fit right in. but also…vlad king personally teaching toga because their quirks are so similar??? toga being afraid of her quirk and then vlad king comes in the hero scence and she sees him and it’s basically like he’s her all might??? yes pleaseeeew

like vlad king fighting aizawa for rights to teach toga. he’s saying how aizawa can have the rest but he really just wants toga because he’s seen that look in toga’s eyes before (the look that shows how scared one is of their own quirk) because it used to be what was shining from his own eyes.

BUT ALSO TOGA IN 1A HNSNNN

toga hating aoyama…because midoriya kind of is taken by aoyama’s detachment yet strong loyalty to 1a. and toga’s like damn it he (aoyama) fits in izu-chan’s taste for friends.

nezu realizing half a semester later (so approx. a month in a half after the dorms were built) that there’s something wrong with his security codings. when he traced it back, he finally realized that midoriya, ever since the year started, was slipping in and out of UA undetected.

nezu, however, doesn’t know how. he keeps trying to change the code but overnight, it’s changed back to midoriya’s intricate codes. he pings aizawa and aizawa gets the memo the moment he walked in on 1a dorms to check on them only to see midoriya chilling in the common rooms with a mud mask on because it’s girls’ night and he was adopted by the girls after he did something to mineta that permanently changed the way mineta looked at the girls. they don’t know what he did, all they know is midoriya left mineta’s room with a smile and mineta, who followed suit, was full on shaking and wouldn’t meet others’ eyes.

aizawa sees the way he’s sitting beside toga (mido-toga-ocha) and groans.

aizawa walks back out and pretends he didn’t see him because it’s already night time and clearly the girls trust him. he’ll report the incident to nezu tomorrow morning instead.

next week, aizawa checks up on them again and this time sees midoriya and bakugou having a moment in the kitchen. bakugou’s cooking and midoriya’s perched at the counter, legs swinging while bakugou grunts at him every time he pauses after his whole rant.

aizawa pretends he doesn’t see anything again, especially because when he turned to look at his students in question, toga did that “disturb them and i’ll end you” pose. aizawa walks away.

THE BODY COUNT SJKASQA

aizawa, hearing the class talk about body counts, skillfully walks away again only to wall back in when midoriya chirps “with a knife!” when kaminari asked how’d he manage to have that much body count.

OKOK BUT WHEN TOGA’S FALLING AFTER HITTING THE ZERO POINTER AND OCHA SLAPPED HER HAND AT HER BACK, SHE TURNS TO OCHA AND SAYS “fuck i didn’t know angels existed” AND PASSED OUT

I am really the only that don't like how Midoriya is portray at MLM ships, not only with Bkdk, but with TodoDeku that always puts Midoriya being innocent and fragile, which he isn't, do they see how Midoriya doesn't escape any fight. Have a big difference when Midoriya stays with a girl (Like Uraraka) and when he is with a guy. What your opinion?

As someone that has read crappy yaoi before this is kinda in line with the dynamic in those. And this is just my opinion but as far as I can tell a good bunch of shippers of the first ship are fans of certain crappy Yaoi. A part of the dynamic is that the "submissive" part (It´s the one second in the ship name most of the time) gets portrayed as feminine. Because this gets seen as weak by some. As some Yaoi fans are still stuck in more conservative views relating to gender, sexuality and so on. The "sub" the "uke" gets portrayed as fragile, weak, helpless, feminine. While the "Dom" the "Seme" gets portrayed as strong, protective, manly (sometimes even toxic masculine), sometimes even controlling but that gets seen as romantic. It is a dynamic that has survived to this day. We should also note that with bakugou other characters get used often as prop. As a way to lift him up. More than enough fics with him have his partner be his biggest fanboy. To hype him up and explain his bad sides away. A self insert at times. Sometimes it seems that people care more about Bakugou in the ship than Midoriya who gets relegated into Fanboy #1 of master Bakugou. Now why it´s different for a straight ship for most of the times. Well we can look back at the Yaoi dynamic of a "Feminine" partner and a "Masculine" partner. People do that for ships having other genders too. And it´s easy to look at a Straight ship and point at who is which as we normally have that assigned at birth with those ships. People tend to follow those traditional dynamics and it´s just that thanks to that in a straight ship Midoriya falls into the "Masculine" category which traditionally gets portrayed as less "Weak".

uh so I noticed this for the first time

I've lowkey been on the iichako/togachako harbour for a while now, izuku x ochako honestly feels like a trope more than a legit ship(ochako's admiration is said to be holding her back, iida supports her ambitions and validates her before deku recognises how grounded she and never mentions she's a cool hero too, he never seems to be inspired by her, underestimates her just as much as everyone else at the sports festival, etc) bkdk wasn't on my radar until deku vs kacchan part 2 + heroes rising, which I was lukewarm to at first. kacchan indirectly cheering him on in season 4 was the tipping point lol.

Anyway, Hori subverts anime tropes, that's basically his hallmark. Unlike traditional mc who become edgy to signify their growth, deku had to break down in order for him to grow post the war arc.

In a similar vein with regard to ships, if any are to be canon(99% ships not canon would be a great end imo, they are kids after all. I started watching mha cuz it didn't have the romance tag on it but lol)

Togachako has a lot of narrative importance, and its shot at becoming canon is about as much bkdk's in a way. Iichako though, works in all ways. So horikoshi, if no ships is not the endgame(cmon canon or not, bkdk is where it's at, it's what deku's arc every time revolves around, some way or another.), izuchako is bland af(no hate if that's ur thing, just not for me!), iichako is good, I'll take it. I l o v e me some platonic/qpp izuchako, but as a romantic ship I just don't think it works.
