But why DID Bastion think the arcwright was dead anyway? Was she hurt by something else and passed out from that? Also, is she a noble, or "just" a particularly high-ranked wright in the queen's Council?

I see people using the phrase "congenital liar", apparently just for the sound of it, unusually often, by people who don't think too much about the semantics of congenitality.

Most recently was someone, not a fan of Heidegger, who said that Heideggerianism in general was worthless because Heidegger was not only someone who stretched the truth, but that he was a *congenital* liar.

I think it's especially poetically infelicitous to refer to *congenital* vices in the context of criticising National Socialists for being National Socialists, but this didn't stop them. I think I have also seen antiliberal badmen like Mssrs Trump, Johnson and Putin also accused of being "congenital liars".

Annie Oakley and The Rescue of Tagg, Part 3

The disheveled and disorientated Jake was marched back to the cabin to join his brother, his arm twisted up his back by Annie, while a smiling Tagg twirled the captured outlaw’s sixgun in his clumsy fingers. Annie looked down severely at her younger brother. “You mind how you handle that shooting iron, you young scamp,” she told him, “don’t you be putting a bullet into your own foot now!” Tagg reddened slightly, but at once held the gun more firmly in his small hand and pointed it at the dubious looking Jake. Back in the cabin, Frank looked disappointed but not surprised to see Jake was Annie’s prisoner. “You sure are one tough female,” he growled grudgingly as Annie tied his brother’s hands behind his back. She then marched both men outside, tied them back to back and gagged them. Looking down at her handiwork with satisfaction, the female sharpshooter then took the opportunity to berate her captives, knowing they could not answer back. “You two varmints ought to be ashamed!” she admonished. “Frightening the bejabers out of a little boy just to get at me!” The two outlaws actually looked a little shame faced. “Next time you come looking for me fair and square.” she finished and holstered her sixgun.

Annie told Tagg to fetch the horses. The two bound outlaws looked up expectantly. “Don’t you get your hopes up, gents.” she told them. “I’m gonna cut your feet free but you ain’t gonna ride.” she told them firmly. “You two are going to walk into Diablo, while Tagg and me take in the view on horseback!” Tagg let out a whoop of joy. “You sure know how to treat bad guys, sis!” he hollered, causing Annie to smile despite herself. And so it was the tied and gagged Ferris brothers stumbled into the town, driven forward by Annie, Tagg and their three steeds, all the way to the jailhouse.

Soon both Ferris brothers were safely locked up in jail to await for the return of Sheriff McTavish and Lofty. “Gee, wait till uncle Luke sees we caught the badmen, Annie!” said Tagg excitedly. “You think he will make me a deputy just like you?” Annie didn’t join in the lad’s celebration and instead frowned. “Don’t think all this means you are forgiven, young man!” she told the boy. “I warned you what would happen if you disobeyed me again. You are still owed one spanking for running off and getting yourself into such trouble!” Tagg pouted miserably. “And no amount of pulling faces is going to change my mind, Tagg” the girl said crossly. “As soon as I get you back to the ranch, you’re going over my knee!” “Aw, sis!” Tagg groaned but he knew it was to no avail: he was going to be painfully punished for his misdemeanours and that was an end to it.

The Ferris brothers chortled merrily at this. “That’ll learn you to obey your big sister, young ‘un!” Frank laughed, delighted at Tagg’s crestfallen expression. Annie turned her fierce gaze on the two prisoners. “It’s a shame you two buzzards didn’t get more whippin’s from your mama when you was being raised,” she retorted, “then you might not be facing ten years in the pen!” Frank and Jake looked at each other, almost as miserably as Tagg. “We’re sorry, ma’am.” they chorused.
