I will be so happy if this actually turns out to be true. One of my favorite bands growing up as a teenager is possibly getting back together according to Alternative Press. The Russian website VK.Com also confirmed the new single by D.R.U.G.S. will be called "King I Am" possibly hinting at a March 3rd, 2020 release date. This really does feel like the Rawring 20's with all of these big bands returning. I'm getting 2011 and 2012 vibes all over again.

Cleanest buildup to the nastiest dubstep drop I've ever heard in quite some time. Craig Owens aka badXchannels never fucking disappoints. I did not expect this song to go THAT hard but it surpassed the richter scale for me. This man is multi-talented.

Album Review by Bradley Christensen badXchannels – WHYDFML Record Label: Sharptone Release Date: November 18 2016
Craig Owens is one of the most important musicians of the early 00s, but only in the post-hardcore / metalcore scene. You wouldn’t really know his name if you weren’t apart of that scene, and I could understand that, but he made a lot of waves throughout the scene from 2003 through 2014. More specifically, that’s when his main band, Chiodos, released their first and last projects. Owens was a big part of the scene, and Chiodos was one of the most influential and interesting bands. They had this post-hardcore meets classical and theatrical influence in their sound. They had string sections one minute, but the next were brutal screams and crushing breakdowns, all the while having catchy choruses and hooks within their music. Chiodos was one of the main bands behind that segway into post-hardcore’s sound (Underoath’s 2004 LP, They’re Only Chasing Safety, really pioneered that, too), and it helps a lot that Owens himself as a powerful, amazing, talented, and interesting vocalist. He had a lot of other projects over the years, such as Isles & Glaciers, Cinematic Sunrise, and even a solo career. He also guested on tons of records, songs, and with other bands, and he was one of those artists that you would expect to pop up in a lot of places. Truth be told, though, I haven’t kept up with Owens in the last few years. He was one of my favorite musicians back in the day, I practically idolized the guy, but after 2014’s Devil, the last LP with Chiodos (pretty solid album, too, all things considered), I didn’t really keep up with him. Late last year, I heard he had a new project, called badXchannels, but I didn’t really pay much attention to it. I was pretty skeptical about it when I heard he was going into a more alternative R&B direction. Not that I don’t like that style of music, because I do (hell, Tyler Carter of Issues and Woe Is Me released a solo R&B EP in 2015 that I loved and still love today), but Craig Owens doing it sounded weird. I’ve been on a binge of early 00s music, I wanted to check out his debut EP under the badXchannels name, 2016’s WHYDFML. I mean, life is short, so why not?
Thankfully, this EP is pretty awesome. It’s one of those records that you don’t think would work, but when you really listen to the record, it ends up being something that you end coming back to time and time again. I think that’s partially because I enjoy R&B music a lot, so I wasn’t necessarily against the idea of Craig Owens going into that, and I’d say that Owens makes it work. The thing is, though, the sound is nothing unique. If you’ve heard artists like The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, or Shy Girls, you know what you’re getting, but there are a couple of things that make this stick out. There is a good sense of diversity firstly, as each song sounds very different, but it’s all very familiar at the same time. These songs fit together, so it’s not like the diversity is too strong. That’s what gives this EP a pass for me, at least the first major thing, anyway. Everything else is pretty cool here, too, such as the hooks, Owens’ vocals, and the lyrics. This EP has some very slick, catchy, and energetic hooks. In particular, there are three songs that I love a lot, those being “You Know I Will,” featuring Detroit-based rapper Jon Connor, “Complicated,” featuring Issues vocalist Tyler Carter, and “Same Thing Everyday,” featuring Missio. These three songs are the best examples of what is great about this EP, because they feature the strengths of this EP. Each song has a very slick, groovy, and energetic alt-R&B sound. It’s nothing unique, but at the same time, it’s done really well. The hooks are strong as hell, and these songs constantly get stuck in my head, which is partially because of Craig Owens’ vocals. He surprisingly makes R&B work, even though his voice is a bit higher-pitched, but it somehow works. The lyrics are pretty interesting, too, despite being nothing new, either. The first two songs are about relationships, and they’re honestly somewhat toxic, but instead of Owens playing it as that’s normal, he admits how messed up these situations are.
For instance, “You Know I Will” is basically about a couple that is having an affair from their respective partners, and it’s merely because the woman’s boyfriend or husband is treating her right, sexually speaking, but from the way the lyrics are framed, it’s almost like the woman’s significant other knows about the affair. Owens says that “he picks you up when we’re done,” and I almost wonder if he’s aware of the whole thing, but it’s an interesting song that talks about this very dysfunctional relationship / affair. Jon Connor’s verse, while being very good, adds another layer to it, because he talks about how he, too, has a girl at home, so it’s a very weird situation. They both know it’s wrong, but they do it, anyway. In the case of “Complicated,” it’s, well, complicated. Owens talks about how he wants to be this girl’s everything, but at the same time, he knows that the relationship is doomed from the start. Tyler Carter comes through with a solid verse, too, essentially upstaging Owens, but that’s not surprising. You can’t really blame the guy, either, but the song is interesting. The lyrics themselves, especially the ideas, are nothing new, but it’s what Owens does with them that I like, and I also like how his voice is a bit more unique for the genre, because you don’t hear vocalists like him in this scene, and that does help to make him stand out. If you’re like me, and you were a fan of his back in the day, it’s a 50/50 chance as to whether or not you’ll like this record, because a lot of fans of metal, post-hardcore, and heavier music aren’t necessarily super open to pop, R&B, or hip-hop, but give this a shot. You might really like this. It’s very different, and I was admittedly skeptical to this being a thing, because I wasn’t sure if Owens could pull it off, but I’ll be damned, because he really can. This thing is really good. I’ve been into it for the last week, give or take, and it’s for a lot of reasons. There’s just so much to get into here, and I like that it’s an EP, too, because that makes for an easier and long-lasting listen, since I can come back to it more than once in any given day. If you don’t like this EP, that’s fine, because I can understand that, but as someone that loves R&B, I’ve been bumping this a lot throughout the last week and I want more people to hear this.
