Discussing 'Pachinko' (2017)
Reading. One of those things that I love the idea of doing, but ultimately also the one thing I never really getting round to doing. Reading has been the one thing where I have always said, 'I'll read tomorrow' and then tomorrow just never comes. When I do read, I usually forget everything that had happened prior to when I picked the book up which is usually about 6 months before. Pachinko, the second novel by Min Jin Lee, did not have that effect on me. I hate to say it, but I have been reading this novel for over a year, and all of a sudden I am obsessed with it, near to the point that I simply cannot put it down.
It was one of those books that I'd picked up on a whim while visiting the bookstore, a book with a cover that I was visually drawn to straight away. I knew nothing about any aspects of Korean and Japanese history featured and I knew nothing about the author. I think I understand now.
Tumblr media
Pachinko is theoretically three novellas within one book. Each section of the book represents the next generation of the family or a whole new branch of family life. As the novel begins, it feels more focused on Sunja, the daughter of a crippled fisherman in a boarding house which resides near the sea in South Korea in the early 1900s. It feels like for this section of the book, Sunja is carrying all of the hard work and caring that comes with the boarding house. Her back must hurt from carrying the weight of this boarding house on her shoulders. So during this section, Sunja ends up meeting Koh Hansu as a blooming adolescent to which she ends up falling in love and falling pregnant with his child. Hansu is a rich fluently Japanese speaking man and later in the novel, it is revealed he is actually part of the yakuza and that is how he has managed to make his fortune. The yakuza is the Japanese version of the mafia.
Sunja quickly finds out after making love to Hansu that in his eyes she is nothing more than a mistress and finds that he is already married to a woman in Japan and has daughters with her, not slay. She quickly asks him to no longer be apart of her life and she is left with the devastating realisation that she now has to disappoint her family, falling pregnant and not being married. This of course is a huge deal in the early 1900s and is enough to be deemed not good enough to be a part of mainstream society.
Tumblr media
Baek Isak then visits the boarding house on his way to Osaka where he is visiting his brother. Yangjin discusses with the tuberculosis ridden man how Sunja has fallen pregnant with another man's baby and Isak decides to marry Sunja because he believes that he will die soon from all of the illnesses he has had in his short life. He promises to care for Sunja until the very end. The only problem with Isak is is that he is like a Victorian street urchin and is constantly sick with something,,, this is something that Yangjin considers that could be a problem for Sunja in the future. The newly wed couple then move to Osaka where they live under the same roof as Isak's brother Yoseb and wife Kyunghee.
Sunja gives birth to her firstborn with Koh Hansu, Noa. She is also working a job and sold a watch that Hansu had given her in order to make enough money to survive, much to Yoseb's disapproval.
Book 2
The novel jumps further in time to a world where Sunja now has Noa and Mozasu (Isak's birth son). Noa becomes the more academic of the two brothers, spending much of his time learning Japanese and reading.
Not long after Mozasu is born, Isak gets caught reciting The Lord's Prayer when everyone is supposed to be worshipping the emperor and he is quickly thrown into prison; which is absolutely insane by the way. They leave the guy to rot away in prison for quite a chunk of time and only release him when he is on the brink of dying so he is able to see his family for a short period of time before perishing.
In the time that Isak is in jail, Sunja and Kyunghee open up a stall at the market where they sell their own homemade kimchi. The business does well and the two are approached by an owner of a restaurant who pays them to cook for their place. In a time where Japan gets struck by World War II and everything begins to become scarce very quickly.
A few years later the restaurant is forced to close due to the War, which is also conveniently the time that Hansu decides to re-enter Sunja's life.
Tumblr media
That night he tells Sunja that he is actually the owner of the resturant and that he has been manipulating their family all of these years as well as tracking them all down. He knew that Sunja had sold the gold watch that he gifted her all those years prior. The absolute fiend for controlling people then decides to send the entire family over to a country house in the middle of nowhere where they would spend the rest of the time in the war working. He makes a bunch of accusations and false claims to Sunja telling her the family need to leave straight away because their home probably wouldn't be there by tomorrow. He also decides to reunite Sunja with her mother Yanjin and pretty much drops Yoseb back off to the house later in the war after he becomes horrifically injured from all the bombings.
When the worst of the war passes, the family returns back to Osaka where Noa and Mozasu continue studying. Noa ends up leaving to go to university in Tokyo where he studies English Literature while Mozasu ends up dropping out of high school where he gets relentlessly picked on for being Korean to the point he was fighting all the time and after the night of being picked up by the police over it, he then begins to work in Goro's pachinko parlour,,, to which he ends up getting promoted. He falls in love with Yumi, a seamstress who wants to live the American Dream, except they have a child together and Yumi ends up dying in a car accident shortly after.
Tumblr media
Noa on the other hand, is sleeping with a girl who makes comments about how she finds it weird that Hansu is Noa's mentor and is paying for everything, she accuses Hansu of being the real father of Noa and that is how he finds out Isak was never his father after all. The same night, he goes for dinner with Hansu where he learns everything, as well as all of his history in the yakuza. Noa is ashamed of this, he is honest with the way he feels like he can't live with himself knowing that his own blood is corrupt. He returns him to have a go at Sunja for not being honest with him, drops out of university and runs away. He sends both his mother and Hansu money every single month to go towards lifestyles and to pay back for his university experience, he feels as if he owes it.
Book 3
The main synopsis of this section is to discuss Noa and Mozasu now that they are both adults in their 40s with children. A school friend of Mozasu, Haruki ends up having the most insane plot twist in the story. The man works as a policeman and has an entire gay plot, despite him being a well beloved man as well as having a wife and children.
Hansu being Hansu decides to hire private investigators so he can locate where Noa is residing. At this point he has one son and three daughters with his wife, he is now considered a Japanese resident and also runs his own pachinko parlour in Japan. When Hansu tells Sunja about this she wants to find him immediately. They drive all the way to the correct area where Hansu tells Sunja it is not a good idea to speak to him and that they should wait longer before making any form of physical contact. As soon as Sunja sees her son, she comes rushing out of the car to speak to him. Noa tells Sunja about his family, the disgust that comes with being Korean and how he has to lie to everyone about who he is because his boss hates foreigners and his wifes mother would not allow him to be around if they found out he was Korean. He promises to call Sunja that night and when he doesn't, Sunja innocently thinks it is because Noa no longer has the home phone number anymore. In actual fact, he took the whole seeing his birth parents again very, very badly.
Mozasu becomes a rich man, rich enough to literally hire famous singers to attend his son Solomon's birthday party, so if you're looking for a fictional sugar daddy then you've come to the right place. Sunja's mother Yangjin passes away after giving Sunja one last mouthful about how awful Hansu was and that Noa deserved his fate because he was born 'a bad seed'. At her funeral in the following chapter, it was revealed that Mozasu's partner Etsuko has a daughter who had had an abortion a chapters prior had then moved in with the family and spends the entire funeral trying to make a move on Solomon? I think that Hana is a character that needs to be studied in the history books.
Tumblr media
Fast forward a few years after Yangjin's funeral and it feels like Mozasu, Sunja and Hansu simply don't exist where the book begins to revolve around Solomon's blossoming from adolescence into early adulthood where he shags his future stepsister ???? Many a time, moves to New York for university, falls in love with Phoebe and then moves back to Japan with her to begin his post-grad job. He becomes a major gambler and tries to save not like other girls Hana who becomes an alcoholic and flees from everybody she ever knew until she tries to rekindle her flame with Solomon over the phone when he's still in New York. I've said this before in the paragraph above, but Hana NEEDS to be studied. Other than her complicated relationship with her mother, how did she end up like this? Every time I read about what she's doing, I end up feeling like that picture of Ben Affleck looking stressed out and smoking.
Tumblr media
As the end of the book hits, Solomon's life literally falls apart. He ends up working for a big banking company where his boss Kazu wants to buy a property from a Korean woman so he can demolish it for the land he wants for a golf course. She refuses because she doesn't want to sell to a Japanese person so asks Solomon to do it for him. He approaches his father where he can get a guy who knows a guy help to achieve the deal he wants. Ironically two days after getting the land, the 93 year old lady passes away peacefully from a heart attack, however Kazu places the blame on Solomon and the yakuza and fires him from his high up position.
Meanwhile Hana is dying in the hospital in Tokyo from a disease passed on from a man which is never really fully disclosed. I imagine it would have been from her years of hostessing and battle with alcoholism. She tells Solomon how she was always in love with him and that after being sacked from his job that he should pursue his fathers pachinko parlour and run that because fuck what any Japanese person thinks of the yakuza background basically.
At a family weekend, Solomon's family are asking him about when he is going to marry Phoebe over a home cooked Korean dinner, but discusses with his father how she couldn't get a job in Japan and he couldn't work in New York without a visa. The relationship between the two shortly ends up breaking apart when Phoebe ultimately decides that they both want very different things and packs all of her bags. She leaves the next day. The night before she was in tears and angry, but the next day? A confident girlboss ready to conquer the world.
Tumblr media
The end chapter discusses how Mozasu has been using the same desk for over 30 years and ends up as a well respected tax payer, Sunja visiting the grave of Isak to speak to him and deliver gifts and confirming that Noa had killed himself because he wanted to be 'normal'. His father Hansu is under 24 hour hospital care with good doctors over his cancer.
There were a lot of things that I felt towards this book. I feel sometimes with books, especially when a lot of the background is focused on major events in history, they can feel very focused on that rather than the characters. This was not the case with Pachinko, rather it was made apparent that all of these historic events were happening and this is what all of the characters were doing in response to all of it. Every character represented had strong developments and it felt so wonderful to grow up with them, for things in their past to haunt them, but also for them to look back at things they could have changed if they went back to that time period. The book is a super easy read, there weren't many words I didn't understand too which feels like an added bonus. It does not feel like it is over 500 pages long (which it is) and what I am most upset about is that Hansu didn't die after all of the torture and trauma he left for the family.

Pachinko was my read✧・゚: *✧・゚:* *:・゚✧*:・゚✧ of 2023
Pachinko was my first read of 2023. I was recommended it in the lead up to my trip to Japan by Tom's mum. She said reading it would be a good lesson in history. I am used to novels being fun and silly and non-fiction being serious and educational. Pachinko was like learning through play, like soaking up the sense of place on a through pictures. Pachinko was a trip through 20th century Korea and Japan. A period defined by flashpoints, World War I and II, civil conflicts. A period when places, peoples homes became transformed and cermented in time as battlegrounds. The conflict of Manchuria, or Hiroshima, just that a conflcit, and not a place of culture or identity, or home. This is how I had come to interpret the Korean civil war. Korea a nation today split into the North and South. A side to be chosen. Pachinko begins with a whole Korea, and born into it is hardworking Korean woman Sunja. She flees Korea during its time of Japanese occupation. By the time she can make it back, it is spit and owned by Russian and the West. Sunja doesn't fretabout the wartime, lifeis measured through the food on the table. These flashpoints of named and dated conflicts in Pachinko are not the omnipresent happenings, but were natural like the quiet hums of cars in the distance. Not heard until you are told to pay attention. When Sunja finds financial stability, her working children successful, she realises in her poverty, her nation has been lost, re-occupied and divided. To go home is un-true, her she can never go back. ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
Pachinko was written in 2017 and tells Korean-Japan hostilities from 1911 to 1989. It follows the family linage of Sunja, daughter of Hoonie, a deformed man with a limp and a cleft-lip trying to make a life for himself in 20th century Korea. A hard worker and respected around his hometown in Busan, Hoonie is arranged to marry Yangjin. In the background Korea is allied with Japan through the Second World War. In Korea, there is poverty on the streets and livelihoods of Koreas are largely ignored by the Japanese empire. Money in Busan comes from the Japanese visitors. Quickly into Hoonie and Yangjin's marriage they birth beaming eyed Sunja. A hard worker herslef, she is volunteers at her mother's bathhouse and tends to the clients, both Korean and Japanese. When she is sixteen, Sunja meets a well-dressed man in the marketplace, he speaks highly of his life back in Osaka. He says he is from Jeju. Sunja can hardly believe when he says he is Korean. It is hard to spot his physical differences in such stunning white and clean clothes. He impregnates Sunja but announces he cannot be with her. Sunja is devestated and feels she has let down her mother and father. A Protestant minister Baek Isak stays in Sunja's mother's boarding house. In his ill-health, Baek declares he will marry Sunja to give the child a name and a better life, one in Japan. Sunja, Baek move to Baek's brother's house in Ikaino, the Korean ghetto of Osaka. Sunja knows the name 'Osaka' from the well-dressed man's stories. He spoke of a land full of food and technology and automobiles. In Ikaino, Sunja does not live this life of decadence. Her and Baek squeeze in with brother in law, Yoseb. Baek's brother is is high in the church and his wife Kyunghee a beautiful woman with soft and thin hands. But despite income and proffession or beauty if you are Korean you are sentanced to the ghettos. Rentals are denied to Koreans by Japanese. In Ikaino Korean children roam the streets and farm animals live with residents. There is little choice to ethic Koreans and living with cattle and pigs is a point to be disgusted of. So, Sunja and Beak move in with Yoseb and Kyunnghee and preparations begin for the fifth member of the house, Baek Isak's illegitimate child, Noa, Followed four years later by Mozasu. Noah and Moses. Noa was the most intreging character. He internalised much of the Korean descrimination from his Japanese peers. In tough times, Sunja and Kyunghee make kimchi at home in massive batches to sell at the markets. The smell of cabbage and garlic seeps into Noa's clothes, at school he is called garlic turd. Noa works hard to distance himself from the Korean archetype. He is told Koreans are dirty so he makes sure his shirt never has creases. He is told Koreans are rude so he is unfalteringly polite to a fault. He is told Koreans will not ammount to much, so he studies hard in school, staying back late after class and working into the night. Noa hates being Korean. He will hate being Korean all his life until he kills himself. To be living in Korea, you are destined for a life of hardshp. To move to prosperous Japan you are not offered the food, shelter or oppertunites of natives. Sunja and Noa and Yoseb and Isak do as they Japanese tell Koreans. They do so without ever questioning or oppposing the walls of oppression which suffocate Ikaino. They are generous, never angry at their place in society. It is a stark difference that until this point, Koh Hansu is the only Korean character who has made a rich life for himself. Of course, he is apart of the Yakunza and cannot have what he wants truely, which is Noa and Sunja. It takes Mosazu, Noa's brother, who defies the anti-Korean sentimate and doesn't take interest in conforming to the rules of the Japanese empirical forces. Noa tells Mosazu to study hard, to not get into fights with those who make him angry. Unlike Noa, Mosazu sees the injustice and can understand it is not him who is wrong but Japanese soicety. He befriends another bullied Korean child and further defies pressure to be a good Korean by taking up work at the Pachinko parlour. Mosazu is able to build a prosperous life for his mother and grandmother in Japan. At the end of the novel when Sunja is in her 70s cleaning Isak's grave placing a designer purse on the graveyard floor it is entirely diffferent image from the poverty striken life Sunja endured during her years of early motherhood in Busan and Japan. The book is the first English language telling of the Korean discrimiation in Japan. A histroy lesson, a comment on entrenched poverty, systematic discrimination, internalised hatred. Working hard and hard and hard in a system built to make sure you fail. The ways in which colonialisation and imperialism do not better those captured nations, and how large empire nations wish not to conjoin for joint prosperity but to keep those conquored on the bottom. To be a winner means there must be losers. It was interesting that Sunja immigrated to Japan when Korea was a unified country. There are times when she, or those in her family wish to see back home. But by going home they are forced to choose a side. Prehaps individual like Noa would wish to appease the Japanese, being taught all his life they are the superior race, never speak ill. Noa may be innclined to show his allegance to North Korea. Despite the quest for Korea to be free, Japanese rule is how many Koreans understand Korea. An American or Western south is still not home. Of course, as the years go on this sense of 'home' becomes very vague. third of fourth generation Japanese born ethnic Koreans have never been to their "native" country. How can this be where they are from? And how can they be made to choose a side and feel at peace. So much change occurs yet people wish for you to choose one side of a coutnry and go back to a counntry that is not yours. The Pachinko game is posited as a game of chance but successful Pachinko businesses, as Mozazu's says is about making people hopeful and then rigging the system. Koreans had been promised better lives in Japan, better lives in the north and in the south. Today, this war rages on.

No, because Pachinko is a perfect example of how all book-to-screen adaptations should be like.
Yes, it’s important to stay loyal to the original source, but it’s also the producers’ jobs to improve or add their own touch to the story and maybe even filling some plotholes along the way.
Making Solomon one of the main characters straight from the beginning? Great choice. Because now we have a narrative to contrast to Sunja’s which helps emphasize the story’s message about the the struggles and sacrifices we go through for the sake of our families.
Hansu and Isak meeting face-to-face? It just makes sense. With the resources Hansu had on hand and how much he cared for Sunja, it’s only logical that he would have made the effort to speak directly to her new husband. I think we can all agree that the showdown between him and Isak at the shop was one of the more iconic moments of the show, and it gave us a great chance to see why Isak was such a better option for Sunja. Two men with such different values but are technically on the same side (both “fathers” of Sunja’s child and Koreans who have to survive living in a country where no one accepts them) made for such a great scene done better than the novel.
Bringing Sunja back to Korea? Brilliant. I personally always felt as though the book’s ending needed a lot more to say. Sunja finally going back to her homeland brings the story to a full circle. It shows that we all eventually go back to our roots and provides the audience a conclusion that we can understand. It also answers unanswered questions. Such as how she reunited with Bokhee in the show, while in the novel, it’s left to the reader’s imagination. Filling in the holes as you go makes it feel more complete. And the fact that she returns in order to spread Kyunghee’s ashes kind of makes Sunja’s return even more perfect. It’s unfortunate that they killed Kyunghee off, but also makes sense considering Kyunghee was nearly twenty years older than Sunja.
The singer from episode four? It didn’t make any difference to the plot at all but it was still so very welcomed since it gave us another view of the kind of oppression that Koreans had to face under Japanese rule. That no matter how successful they become, that difference in power is still evident, and you’re still essentially working for a system that takes advantage of your people. It makes a strong point especially since it was going back and forth between the contract signing, where Solomon begins to realize that his so-called beloved company may not appreciate him more than he thought. These original subplots like Haruki’s fate or Hansu’s recent death weave together what is a bigger story that goes farther beyond the Baek family.
Sure the show may have made some changes from the book, the biggest so far being Solomon’s job and life, which created a different kind of conflict than in the novel, but you could almost consider it a unique interpretation. It’s a different storyline but relays on the same themes about internalized racism and the struggles of second-generation immigrants just in a different way. Which is exactly how adaptions should be like. Viewers should be impressed by the quality in storytelling and be possibly inspired to read the book, and readers should be able to watch it and feel like they’re watching something familiar and yet fresh. The directors knew the best way to adjust the novel so it’d be more suitable as a show, and it worked. There was no shortcuts or copy and pasting done, just sincere effort to tell a story to reach bigger audiences and showing off your skill for entertainment.

One of the things that stood out to me in Pachinko is how utterly, depressingly realistic everything is. As a young adult who mostly read books with a clear defined, happy ending, reading Pachinko just made me sad.
Sunja has always considered herself ordinary. She repeats this fact so many times throughout this book, whether she’s in the market with sister in law, or with Hansu as a grandmother. She never realises the extent of her life she gave away just for her little family to survive, and still, she blames herself. Even her own mother rants how this is all her fault, and passes away before she cant take back her words and apologise.
Kyunghee. A beautiful woman, with a heart of gold. Who looked after her nephews as her own sons, and looked after her dying husband, even if she had the chance to escape the life she had.
Isak. A truly kind man, who gave Sunja a second chance at life, even though it wasn’t easy. A man who stood by his words and actions, and looked after Noa and Mozasu.
Noa. A troubled, quiet young man with internalised hatred borne from the reaction of people around him. A brilliant scholar, but a distant son.
Mozasu, whose sole objective was to make money and look after his family. Despite having a genius older brother, he took to a job as naturally as breathing, and continued to be the family’s pillar of strength and financial security for years to come, despite the grief in his personal life.
And finally, Solomon. The grandson of Sunja, one who grew up relatively sheltered from the hatred and the poverty, and still got screwed over.
Over the generations, no one really gets a happy ending (emotionally, not financially). Sunja, even though having worked herself to the bone to support her sons, loses the person who kickstarted her journey. Noa shoots himself out of disgust of being Yakuza. Mozasu loses his wife, and raises his son as a single dad. . Hansu presumably dies, still surrounded by his family, but his mind with Sunja. Isak dies for his beliefs. Yoseb dies a broken man, almost half out of his mind, causing anguish to Kyunghee. Solomon loses his first love, gets swindled by his racist company and breaks up with his girlfriend. In a way, i feel that what the shaman says to a pregnant Yangjin is true; that there is a curse on their bloodline, but Sunja would survive. Not live, just survive.
If there was a family that deserved a happy ending, the Baek family would take the cake. I can only hope that their future generations don’t suffer as much as them.

TRIVIA & TRAITS
• stella isn’t technically the oldest newyou member but she is clearly the oldest and wisest you know?
• like. she is sweet and lovely and down to earth but if you get to know her a little bit you can tell that she has Seen Some Shit
• her name is hyunbin or stella, not jisoo, so jot that down. she has no idea how fans found her birth name but the fact that it got out is one of the only things that’s made her really upset since newyou’s debut. if she sees one more stella fan account with “jisoo” in the @ she’s going to snap
• consistent with her old lady nature, she is a terrible, terrible sleeper. she goes to bed really early but wakes up a ton throughout the night and can’t sleep much past 4:30 or 5 am. she has a weirdly low caffeine tolerance though & if you give her one (1) mug of white tea she starts shaking uncontrollably
• interpreting her kindness as weakness is the worst mistake you can make
• she can read other people like no one else, and she tends to remember everything that people tell her about themselves, even crazy specific stuff that inevitably freaks them out if she mentions it later
• she isn’t always the best at putting her thoughts into words, which is why on the surface it seems like she isn’t good at giving advice. a lot of times, though, things she says that seemed cryptic or useless at the time end up making perfect sense later
• along with haneul she is the “face” of newyou and one of the most popular members, which the company clearly wasn’t expecting at all because they put her in the back during newyou’s first few releases
• stella doesn’t have a ton of friends her own age but other people’s moms, teachers, and librarians LOVE her. she’s the mom whisperer
• she is very observant and tends to notice and look for things that other people don’t. it’s why newyou’s video producers tend to have her watch final drafts of the group’s content before releasing it, because she catches mistakes that no one else does
• even people who don’t stan newyou probably stan stella and anyone who doesn’t is just making a terrible lifestyle choice

Personal Narrative
My name is Baek Sunja, and my story is told by Min Jin Lee in her novel Pachinko. It is 1914, and my parents own a boarding house in Yeongdo, an islet by the port city of Busan. After three attempts at children they have me. Papa, born with a crooked foot and cleft palate, passes away not before teaching me and my mother (who I call umma) how to count and do math to carry on our simple and repetitive lives of buying food at the market, cooking the food, and receiving rent from our lodgers. One day, a distinct man named Koh Hansu appears in the market wearing a white western suit. I eventually meet him and make him the only real friend in my busy and one-tone life. This friendship eventually turns sexual, which I hoped signaled that he would marry me until I learned he was already married to a woman in Japan. Ashamed, I leave him and meet the newest lodger: a pastor named Baek Isak making his last stop before leaving to Osaka to live with his brother. He promises to forgive me for my sins, marry me, and take me to Japan where I could essentially start a new life with a legacy bound for success. I take his promise and move to Osaka, where I have two sons. In Japan, I learn how harshly and alien Koreans are treated when Isak is jailed for being a Korean christian until he dies. My sister-in-law, Kyunghee and I work in a market to provide finance for the household while my sons, Noa and Mozasu, go to school. A man named Kim Changho eventually proposes to employ me and Kyunghee at his restaurant for a pay that is too good to be true.We later find out that the restaurant is owned by Hansu, who moves us to the countryside to be protected from the war. Noa eventually reaches university while Mozasu drops out and finds comfort in working at a pachinko parlor. All seems well enough until Noa finds out that Hansu, who has been paying for his university as a family friend, is not only his biological father but also the second most infamous gangster in Japan. As a result, Noa goes off the grid from me and the entire family. To make things worse, Mozasu’s wife is killed in a taxi accident, leaving Mozasu distraught and his newborn son Solomon without a mother. Hansu and I eventually find Noa in Nagano with a whole new name and identity, where he promises to reconnect to me. However, the day after I met him again, Noa commits suicide. Almost 20 years later, after Solomon graduates from Colombia University just to work with his father in a pachinko parlor, I bury a picture of Noa and Mozasu in Isak’s grave to make a sort of peace with myself and the boys.

The Dinner
Angst + Fluff /// Baekhyun’s mother has never liked you, not in the slightest. Tensions rise around the dinner table when his mother invites a guest over.
Tumblr media
“She doesn’t like me,” you mumbled whilst resting your head on the window. The cold glass was somewhat mending the current throbbing in your head, but you knew it was no match bigger one would come along.
“No way,” Baekhyun said. “She doesn’t know you enough, she needs time to get to know people.”
You turned to him, “It’s been two years.”
He tapped the steering wheel and kept his eyes on the road, “Ah..maybe she feels threatened. You are taking her son away.”
You rolled your eyes and went back to resting your head against the window. The terraced houses were beginning to become familiar and the pit in your stomach was growing. On the next turn, he’d be driving into his childhood street.
“Your mother hates me,” You said as he began pulling into the driveway. His parent's car was parked next to yours.
He undid the seat belt with a click, “Listen, she’s just threatened. She has no reason to hate you, you’re probably the smartest and most beautiful girl I've ever brought home. Maybe she’s just testing the waters.”
You opened the door, “how many girls have you brought home?” You asked after you’d summoned the power to even joke with him.
He narrowed his eyes, “What’s it to you?”
“Oh just wondering,” you smirked.
“Well you can help me with the bags and maybe I'll tell you,” he said as he opened the boot of the car.
You took two bags and Baekhyun took three, they weren’t the heaviest so really he had no reason to groan. He trailed behind you as you walked up the stone steps to the front door. You placed the bags down, took a breath and reminded yourself you could get through this then you pressed the door bell.
He came and stood next to you, “It’ll be okay,” He said, then kissed your cheek.
“I hope so,” you said under your breath.
The door handle jingled and then it was swung open. You breathed a sigh of relief after seeing Baekhyun’s fathers face, pushing through the gaps in his legs was Genie, their pet dog. “You kids are late!” He exclaimed as he wrapped his arms around you both.
His father was a gentleman and the absolute spit of Baekhyun. How he’d settled down his dragon of a mother you didn’t know but at least they’d made Baekhyun.
“Sorry, I couldn’t decide what to pack,” you said as Genie jumped on your legs. You bent down and ruffled the dog's fur, “aren’t you excited!”
“Women,” His father sighed nudging Baekhyun as he said so. “Well you kids come in, Baekhyun you can place the bags upstairs.” He turned to you,“ Dinners just about ready so let’s go sit down. ”
“But dad-” Baekhyun begun
With one swift look, Baekhyun took some bags in his hand and began treading up the steps. You grinned as you watched him struggling up the steps, he threw you a look after hearing a giggle.
After placing all the bags in his old room, Baekhyun was downstairs and seated next to you at the table. His mother hadn’t made a grand appearance yet so you breathing quicker than normal.
Noticing your clear disdain, he placed his hand over yours under the table, “She loves you.” He said to your ear.
You scoffed, “she doesn’t.”
“Baekhyunniee!” A voice screeched, you immediately recognised it as her. You’d barely had the time to see her as she’d whizzed across the room to engulf her son in a hug. She placed to kisses on his cheeks, “Gosh, where have you been you little monkey!?”
His face was lit with a large smile, “Work and stuff. How have you been mum?” He asked.
“Barely surviving, I can’t bear to live with just your father and that dog any longer!” She exclaimed, His father rolled his eyes. “You need to move back here.”
“Maybe in the future,” He said.
She tapped his nose,“Good.”
She unravelled her hold on Baekhyun and turned to you. You stood sheepishly next to him, mustering a shaky smile. “I almost didn’t see you there,” She said.
She’d knocked you to the side when she’d barreled into the room…but you kept that to yourself.
“Ah, sorry,” You said. “Um..how are you doing?”
She gave you a smile but it was obviously strained. “Good, you?”
“I'm good too,” you replied.
She stared at you in complete silence for a few seconds until Baekhyun’s father broke the quiet. “Let’s all sit down.”
She hummed in agreement and went and pulled up and chair next to her husband. You and Baekhyun took your seat. He cast you a look and mouthed sorry. You raised your brows in jest.
“Well, let’s cut the meat,” Baekhyun’s father said, grabbing the knife off the table.
“We can’t cut the meat without everyone here,” His mother said, pushing her husband's hand down. Baekhyun looked around the table, he’d just noticed the extra plate next to him, “Is Soohyun coming? I thought he was in Nepal.”
You could see the fire being lit behind his mother's eyes. She had something planned. “No, your brother’s still in Nepal. Ok, so, I was in Mr Kim’s grocery and you’d never guess who I met!”
“Who’s-”
Ring ring
“Oh, that must be her!” Baekhyun’s mother stood with the quickness you’d didn't think a 50 something could manage.
You turned to Baekhyun, “Who’s she talking about?” You asked him.
He looked equally perplexed, “I have no idea,” He looked to his father. “Dad, who did mum invite?”
His father shrugged, “Beats me.”
You could hear them in the hallway, his mother was busy dotting on whoever it was. You couldn’t hear the other person. Soon enough Baekhyun’s mother dragged the poor lady into the entrance of the dining room. The lady stood at the entrance sheepishly waving and smiling. Judging by the smile on Baekhyun’s face he clearly knew who she was.
“Kyunghee!” He said, practically leaping off his seat. “W-what are you doing here?”
You didn’t need Einstein to tell you what was happening. Baekhyun’s mother was standing between the both of them as if she was anointing their wedding. That bitch, you thought.
After the pleasantries and what not, Kyunghee, who you’d quickly come to learn was Baekhyun’s childhood friend, sat down. Baekhyun’s father began cutting the meat and everyone was dishing their food out. Your plate consisted of not much since you’d suddenly felt full.
“So,” Baekhyun’s mother looked to you, “How’s your job with the..uh..oh god, sorry, but what do you do again?”
“Primary school teacher and it’s going well, we’ve got exams coming up,” You said as you sliced into the beef. “It’s kinda stressful.”
Baekhyun nodded, “She’s always up at night making revision plans.”
“Nice,” His mother said, sipping on her juice. “Kyunghee, how’s the residential going? Baekhyun did you know that Kyunghee’s training to become a surgeon?”
Kyunghee’s face flushed, “It’s going good, it’s also quite stressful.”
“Which hospital are you doing your residency at?” Baekhyun asked, “I’m at St Johns General.”
“Really? That’s quite close, I’m at Judes.”
You sipped your wine and attempted to drown out the all too exciting doctor conversation between Kyunghee and Baekhyun. You’re not a jealous person, but it was hard not to be considering the underlying reasons behind it all.
“Kyunghee dear, do you remember when you and Baekhyun came home with your clothes absolutely drenched? What happened again?” Baekhyun’s mother asked.
You nearly scoffed at the word ‘Dear’, the woman would rather turn in her grave then address you as dear.
Baekhyun tipped his head back in laughter, “Oh god, that day was amazing!” He said.
Kyunghee placed her glass down, “We tried to rescue that frog and ended up falling into that lake.” She said. “What kind of idiots were we to rescue a frog in a lake?!”
The conversation carries on without you, not that even Baekhyun noticed. He was also quite enamoured with Kyunghee and his mother’s eyes were shining with glee. Meanwhile, you’d downed as much wine as you could manage. By dessert, Baekhyun had given you a look that screamed put the glass down, you did, after another glass.
You’d all moved to the living, and were watching a nature program whilst snacking on the cheese board Baekhyun’s mother had set out. Usually, you would have rested against Baekhyun but you couldn’t bring yourself to even try to.
By ten, Kyunghee had stood up and was wrapped up in her jacket ready to go. You’d never seen Baekhyun’s mother this dismayed.
“You’re going now?” She said.
Kyunghee nodded, “Yes, I have an early morning, I'm going to a seminar.”
“Ah, well, I guess you’re right,” She said.
Kyunghee turned to Baekhyun, “It was nice meeting you again toad face,” she said to him and then she turned to you. “I know he’s annoying, but thank you for taking care of him. Hit me up if he’s ever too much.” She finished with an effortless wink and Baekhyun snorted.
“I’ll be sure to,” You said, giving her a small hug.
“Are you mad at me or something?” Baekhyun asked as he buttoned up his pyjama shirt.
You spat the toothpaste out, “No.”
He was silent for a moment, “You’re giving one-word answers.”
“Listen, I'm not mad at you, I'm just slightly peeved,” You said. “Plus I want to sleep so.”
You opened the bathroom door and walked into Baekhyun’s room. He trailed behind you, “Baby, what’s really wrong, you can’t just sleep on it.”
“You know what’s wrong, don’t act stupid.” You said as you slipped your feet out of your slippers. “It’s your mother…it’s always your mother.”
“She was actually alright today,” He said. “She didn’t give you any shit.”
You cast him a cold stare. “Really…that’s what you think?”
He raised his hands in defeat, “I mean, what do you want me to say!”
“You really don’t see it do you?” You said. You could feel the emotions rising as the tension grew tangible. “Your mother brought Kyunghee to try and push me out, Baek, it’s really fucking obvious!”
He groaned and ran a hand through his hair. “Well, it obviously didn’t work so why are you getting worked up? I am still yours and probably will be for however long. Kyunghee doesn’t even feel that way, especially about me.”
“Well I don’t care, it’s the fact that she still attempted to,” You said. You walked to the left side of the bed and pulled the covers down.
He nestled into the bed, you shifted further to the left when you felt his hand coming up to touch your shoulder. “I’m sorry…I’ll tell her to stop.”
“She won’t stop,” You said after switching off the bedside lamp.
He placed a kiss on your shoulder, “I love you, you know that?”
You turned to him and buried your face into his chest, “I know you do, idiot.”
“D’ya wanna something?” He said, resting his chin on your head.
You nodded, “Go on.”
“Kyunghee was hitting on you,” He said.
“What..no..wait, you’re right!” You said. “Well, tell her I just might hit her up if your mother keeps playing up.”
“Go to sleep.”

Now this bitch was long, but I enjoyed writing it, the prompt given gave me a lot of room to work with so thanks for that anon!
Kyunghee is the girl version of Kyungsoo if you guys didn’t notice, I tend to make girl versions of exo in my writing, it’s fun.

I really enjoyed the chapter i have a few ideas lol but first about baby jun not eating i hope they get that figured out soon🥺Also since it was a flash alarm im kinda nervous a little more now cause i do think the possibility for her being pregnant is likely and since oc isn't ready for another but baek is im stuck lol like I want them to have another to expand their beautiful family but at the same time oc went through a lot with the triplets idk im curious when they go to that doctors and the outcome. Also everyone telling oc how lucky she is to have baek like I get it but i hope she's okay mentally and her self esteem doesn't overtake her and cause a outburst or her shutting down completely😥or maybe im thinking too much into it idk im just hoping the best.
a idea I thought was does the angst have to do with khyunghee sister she seems like she and baek had something going on and whatever happened obviously didn't work in her favor seeing baek and oc are together, it reminded me of the chapter where oc went back to the village when baek was away and her remarks she made to her sister doing the YouTube channel and how it won't get her anywhere unless she was in oc position where it insinuated how oc pretty much got everything easy for her cause of baek, idk she seems spiteful or just suspicious 🤔
Or is the angst in front of our faces this entire time im nervous lol can you tell us that much lol you also said heartbreak does it tie into the angst or no and I'm having a lot of thoughts of what that could be but I'm not gonna say yet cause I'm still thinking 😂
Thanks again for the chapter I love this story alot the best story I've read in a while everything is balanced so well it's chef kiss can't wait for the next your doing amazing❤
Thank you so much for your precious feedback! ☺️
Jun is the weakest baby and it will keep showing for a while I’m afraid but overall he is a healthy boy 🥺 the two girls are so evil, one baby has to tone down the craze haha. Oh, you are on the right path. OC can be pregnant but she isn’t now. It was a fake alarm, but in the future she can get pregnant, of course.
I find it interesting that you all picked up on OC’s anxiety about people telling her she is lucky. She is building herself up, so being anxious about her situation is natural and I didn’t write it explicitly but you picked up on it 🥺❤️ Kyunga’s words were unnecessary and actually not true 🤬
Nope! Kyunga nor Kyunghee don’t have anything to do with “the heartbreak”. It will be solely the fault of Baek and OC - both will be to blame, both will have to work it out. But I’m happy you referred to that chapter ^^ 😊 because yes, Kyunga’s character is complex and since she was involved in a way with Baek (whom she loved) she grew to hate OC. Kyunga already had a little sarcastic/dishonest remark back in Simply Yours when Baek and OC went to countryside for Korean New year 💁‍♀️
Ohhh bby, I know I am teasing too much with the upcoming angst >.< It isn’t entirely in front of our faces now; some things still need to happen for it to all go down, but there had been foreshadowing already! That’s all I can say sorry 🥺😣 honestly a lot will go down in a single chapter, I’m taking baby steps to lead us to it. Just a little longer and I’ll break your heart I promise!! Metaphorically ofc 😆
Hence the next chapter will be again long. Time skips and growth both for both parents and triplets. ^^ thank you for reading and for your kind words, I’m very humbled🥺 I’ll try my best not to disappoint you!
