This little notebook sure held a lot! It held my notes from #Balticon2022, #ImaginariumCon 2022, and #CapClave 2022. While these weren't the only cons I attended last year, this little notebook held 3 conventions and over 20 panels worth of notes. After sharing "Positive Speculative Fiction" today, this little notebook has finished its work. I know not everyone can attend conventions -- be it time, money, or personal limits. I know that not everyone learns well at panels. I know that even if you do make it, it can be hard to pick between the 7 different panels with amazing guests happening simultaneously. So, I attend for you. I take notes and then review them & condense a meandering 50-minute panel into usually under 10 minutes of takeaways. Organizing and bulletizing help me remember the lessons, and lets me be able to pass them on. Thank you, Little Notebook, you helped me take notes from the writing pros, and share them with all my friends! Now, you can rest on the bookcase. #books #amwriting #writingtips #notes #cons #booktok #writersofinstagram #authorsofinstagram #authortube #authortok #publishing #writing #nanowrimo #writer https://www.instagram.com/p/CovKne0vrTp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Writing the Sex Scene in Non-Erotic Works (A Balticon 56 panel)
Sex scenes can run the gamut from fade-to-black as soon as they reach for a kiss to explicit move-by-move erotica. But, when you're writing a story that's not erotica, deciding where to draw the line can be a challenge. #sexScenes #writingTips #balticon

The description was as follows: The good, the bad, and the bumping uglies. Writing a compelling sex scene that moves the plot forward without turning your work into erotica is a balancing act. Where you fade to…

Giving Your Work Away For Fun and Profit (A Balticon 2022 Panel)
Everyone loves free stuff, but authors need to pay the bills. Can you make money by giving your work away, and if so, how do you choose what to distribute for free? #indiePublishing #publishing #amwriting #writers
Here’s another batch of notes from my Balticon 2022 rewatch. The description of the titular panel was as follows: Everyone loves free stuff, but authors need to pay the bills. Can you make money by giving your work away, and if so, how do you choose what to distribute for free? What tools and metrics can you use to show a publisher or business partner that the work that you give away for free…

Reluctant Heroes (A Balticon 2022 Panel)
Not every protagonist wants to be the hero of the story. How do doubt and hesitation develop heroic characters, and how does reluctance change over the course of a narrative? #writingTips #balticon2022 #reluctantHero
While I didn’t get the chance to see a lot of panels live at Balticon 2022, my membership included a month of viewing the recorded panels (after they went up), so I started my rewatch with the titular panel. The panel description was as follows: Not every protagonist wants to be the hero of the story. How do doubt and hesitation develop heroic characters, and how does reluctance change over the…

Balticon 2022 Recap
While I don’t want to downplay the seriousness of any controversies coming out of Balticon 56, this post will be focused on my personal Balticon, and not any of the surrounding issues. It’s been a very long week. Thursday I’d pre-purchased the parking via the linked page on the Balticon website, because I’d heard some people had issues with the app, and it went through smoothly. Then, I…

Prepping For Balticon: How Do I Do This Again?
Prepping For Balticon: How Do I Do This Again?
2 years ago, when we still thought the pandemic was a matter of weeks, I got conned into running social media for Balticon, Baltimore’s 4-day celebration of everything science fiction and fantasy. While I’d attended the convention for several years, and I’d worked on other cons, I’d never worked this one before. Now? They’ve added publicity under my purview as well. While I’ve got 2 virtual…
