scenegraph reviews: smp kit makes pose roll.exe (part 2: size comparisons/etc)
(part one is thisaway)
Tumblr media
helter skelter
needless to say, gluing down the antennae really helped her out.  she still does not pass the Sit Test.  it should be possible, but her waist really doesn’t like it and will pop loose while i’m trying to adjust the pose.  however, she does get the Tony Hawk Pro Skater Seal of Approval.
Tumblr media
i never took a picture of it because lol lmao she balances perfectly well with the antennae fix she doesn’t need it unless you want to pose her using floatshoes, but she does come with a nicely themed stand, which plugs into her button!  so it’s both pretty unnoticeable when it’s not in and hey, cool, she has a stand.  good thinkin’ there.
aaaand some size comparisons, so you can see how she’ll fit in with other figures!  L-R: picco neemo S, figma mumi, smp roll, kotobukiya classic roll
Tumblr media
(at this point, i forgot that the reason kotobukiya classic roll is consigned to the tchochke shelf instead of hanging out with the other figures is that she loves to fall apart without warning.  really, really loves it.  i’ve gotten so spoiled by megami device kaede, when nearly a decade separates the two sculpts lmao)
Tumblr media
aaaanyway.  L-R: hairdorable, nendoroid, smp roll, calico critter/sylvanian family older sister
Tumblr media
now that she’s together and my thumbs have recovered, i am super happy that i have this lil roll!  she’s everything i needed to tide me over until kotobukiya roll.exe returns from prototype purgatory, and at such a small size it’ll be easy to display future navis in the series should people buy this first set.
i fully expect series two to be half taken up by the insanely conspicuously absent usual suspects of blooz and fort.  but at the same time, their being missing here (in favor of gutsman and fireman!  this is really an exe episode 8 collection, not a bn1 collection!) really tells me that bandai has more plans for this series?  and that is good, because there are a lot of navi designs i love that i would be incredibly happy to have a smol, posable representation of.  like elecman!  and toadman!  and aquaman!  and medi!  and RING PLEASE CAN WE GET THAT FAR
i know i just got done outlining how these things are a bit of a pain to get together and you shouldn’t pay scalper prices for ‘em considering the unadvertised work and unincluded tools you’ll need to be ready to utilize, but IF THEY DO REAL WELL THINK OF THE NAVI DESIGNS WE COULD GET WHO AIN’T NEVER HAD A FIGURE BEFORE

Plamo?: Bandai Shokugan 66 Action Dash: Mega Man 2
Tumblr media
This is a series of mini-figures that i think were sold in blind boxes, maybe? I think i still have the boxes, they might have been labeled; but when i bought them, it was as a set of all five off of the shopping website i won't name here. They're not full model kits, mostly poseable mini figures with some changeable parts. But those extra parts come on tiny runners, so maybe that counts for something? lmao. But they all came pre-painted, which they did a pretty decent job on. it's nothing spectacular, but probably worth the price you'd pay in Japan (I actually didn't check the MSRP on these because i assumed i was getting them at a markup) The reason i ordered this set is because they came with Vile and X figures, which are compatible with the Super Minipla line of Ride Armor's from Mega Man X (which will be a separate entry on this blog)
CUT MAN:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This CutMan figurine is pretty nice. As you can see these are eminently poseable, but they're also a little fragile. Still, once you get them into a decent position they tend to stay. The Rolling Cutter actually has a good friction fit in his right hand. SUPER MEGA MAN:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love this boy. As a kid i had (and still have actually) a pencil topper of Super Mega Man. I love this little figurine doing the rocket punch from the games that have this feature. Gotta point out the paint jobs on these are pretty okay. Not like super refined but they're definitely charming and great. GEO STELLAR / MEGA MAN STAR FORCE??:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I admit, i don't know much about this particular subseries. I tried to play the first star force once, but couldn't get into it. nonetheless, he came with the set, so here he is, posing for you! MEGA MAN X:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay so this and the next figure are the primary reasons i got this set. As you can see, it comes with swappable pieces that allow him to pilot the Ride Armor Super Minipla kits. Not going in depth on these here, but here you can see the "painted" (with gundam markers) job i did in 2020 when i went full hog into Plamo. I believe the silver used was a metallic silver gundam marker, GM177 to be exact. It was very stinky!! A strong, acrid smell. Anyway, I'm currently working on repaints of the Chimera kit to recreate game-accurate-ish versions of the Hawk and Kangaroo Armor. Actually, here's a sneak peak of that:
Tumblr media
Anywho, that's all for another post. The last guy left is..
VILE:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You know him as the devilish rival to X. You can see the minifig has a magazine for his vulcan coming from his backpack. The minifig is nice, though the only customization he has is the hands gripping the steering stick. Or you can make them look like he's laughing maniacally. Either way. Maybe the back of his head could use some panel lining and painting? but i don't feel like trying that over a pre-painted surface. Not sure why the joints seem to be splitting at the seams. Could be a good reason to revisit this model one day with sprue glue or some such. I usually keep these guys displayed diorama style in my light cabinet on the megamans shelf:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know they've never actually faced off in their ride armors before. In my defense, toys are for making cool scenes so i will do just that with them. Anyway in conclusion, I really like Mega Man and have since i was a child, thank you for coming to my TED Talk. Here's the stats for this set (and yes some of the spare parts for these figs came on sprue)
Tumblr media
Not super wasteful on the consumer side of the plastic equation.

SHOKUGAN MODELING PROJECT SR-X
Saying nothing of its final quality, this is probably the scummiest release for a model I have ever seen. So, R-1 and R-Gun were both standard, mass produced releases, sold together (remember this, it'll be important later). Now, you'd think with that being the case, and their sizes, that R-2 and R-3 would both be separate mass releases, but they weren't. They were instead both a massively expensive P-Bandai release. And to top it off, many of its effect parts, alternate hands, and accessories came in another additional P-Bandai set, which also came with R-Gun's railgun parts. And SR-X only uses R-Gun with the railgun parts. So if you want an accurate R-Gun to go with your SR-X, you also need that third set, and you will own R-Gun at this point since it comes with R-1.
So to summarize, R-1 and R-Gun were a mass release, R-2 and R-3 were a P-Bandai release, and completed R-Gun is a different P-Bandai release. Really scummy way of draining someone's pockets.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
R-1: The most standard robot of the set, it has a decent accessory pool, storage for all of its weapons on its person, and a vehicle mode. The additional joints in the shoulder parts allow for a wide range of movement that isn't impeded by anything transformation/combination related (in fact, it may be improved). The jet mode is sadly not that great (I'm pretty sure I've gotten the arms crossed every time I've transformed it), but I appreciate its inclusion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
R-2 Powered: For such a bulky bot, R-2 has pretty decent posability. While its legs are strange to work with at first because of all its transformation parts, they do have good range. The additional Powered armor parts also don't get in the way or impede movement or balance much at all. It's probably my favorite of the set.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
R-3 Powered: It's so strange that most of R-3's accessories are for its base form. R-3 without its Powered upgrade is very simple to construct, but decently posable, if a little tricky at the hips, whereas the Powered parts are the most complicated part of the entire build.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
R-Gun: R-Gun is very similar to R-1 in that it's a very posable with a lot of accessories and has a transformation to it. Unlike R-1, it's transformation is a lot more solid and doesn't require you to take it apart (apart from the railguns). I understand why those two were packaged together, even if the non-inclusion of the railguns still rubs me the wrong way.
Tumblr media
SR-X: And the reason we're all here: the SR-X. It is literally the largest model kit I have ever built, standing around 14in/35cm. Despite being an enormous combination, it is extremely solid. I'm able to pick it up and move it around without the fear of it falling apart. It's also very posable, with multiple joints in the shoulders, two waist joints, very good ankles, and many more.
And with the accessory set, it's able to replicate, I believe, every finisher is has in the game. Giant sword, using R-Gun, glowy fists, leg missiles, goofy eye beams, its jump kick. You can even remove the front portion of the eye beam and place it on a pair of included glasses if you're feeling particularly sporty that day.
Tumblr media
It does require a few adapters in the torso, and in the hips if you don't use the stronger replacement ones (which I did), but it was overall a very fun build, and putting it together was an interesting process in and of itself.
The Bad: In total, across all 3 releases, and including shipping, I spent around $500 on this set. And while I think this is a great model kit, I would never recommend someone drop that on this thing. I think maybe you could get away with half that? But not half a grand.
It doesn't help that there's technically a better, easier to obtain option. There was a release from RIOBOT last year that's a bit more expensive (around $650?), but does all the same stuff and a bit more, comes preassembled, is made of higher quality materials, etc. If you were going to go for this, I'd say just save up a bit more and get that one. (Although, looking at its specs, this one might be ever so slightly taller O_O)
The Details: I went pretty easy on this one (it is massive, afterall). I did some basic panel lining and used the included stickers. There were a few left over for R-3 when I finished that I still don't know where they go...
Overall, the SR-X is a ridiculous model kit on many levels, including its price tag, but other than that one I'd say they're all positives. I can't recommend it, but if you have a lot of money burning a hole in your pocket, there are worse things to spend it on. Just maybe don't buy them all at once.

That Square Enix TWEWY Neku statue that I was complaining about a few hauls ago, finally arrived. It took longer than a year, but I read that it is due to TOM having stocking issues and not because that’s how long it actually took to release. I saw it in-stock at USA retailers, so I was already suspicious about it. I dread about my NieR Replicant statue as well, but I didn’t want to pay second market prices for a Kuji statue that Squre Enix themselves are selling for retail. I just thought TOM would have it in-stock before Square Enix USA’s shop, but it seems like neither of them have it yet... I feel like that has been delayed for a while as well. If second market prices weren’t an eye off the face, I would have gone that route instead (for NieR I mean, this Neku is available at a few different places, I just got it where it was less expensive at the time it went up for pre-order). DX
From left to right: Square Enix TWEWY The Animation Statuette Neku; Sega Ohiruneku Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba  MP Mini Figure "The Hashira Gathered" Vol. 1;  Bandai Shokugan Mobile Suit Gundam Micro Wars 2; Sega Giyu Tomioka Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Premium Perching Figure.
I am happy with him nonetheless, even if it took forever and a lifetime for him to arrive and be in-stock at TOM. I also got a set of the Ohurineko Sega prize figures, but the USA release version that come in a set of three -- I only wanted Giyu (as it might be obvious), but the actual Kuji version was/is upwards of $50 USD on most second market places, and I don’t want to pay that amount for him. This set was 27USD for all three, so I got the set instead. I was hoping it would be a window display box, but it seems to be an altered version of the Kuji ones. I am not sure if it’s bigger, but the art seems to have been adjusted to fit all three instead of each individually. I’ve seen some places having Giyu individually now, for pre-order for a dollar more than what I paid for this set. I am a bit tempted, but also I should tighten my belt when it comes to hoarding, since shipping from Japan doesn’t seem to be going down anytime soon. I would love to be able to unbox one, but not for $30. DX I purchased him and the Gundam Micro Wars from B&N, so I could get free shipping -- I wasn’t able to choose the Gundam figure due to that (not too thrilled with the one I got). The ones sold there are the USA version, without the candy so I was happy to see it doesn’t have candy but kind of sad I didn’t get another type of robot.
The Sega Perching Giyu is a second one for me, so I can unbox him. I should really start slowing down on the double purchases, but the weirdo in me wins every time. (:

Son Goku
- from Dragon Ball Styling
- by Bandai Shokugan
Such a perfect little Goku figure, and for only 100 Yen?
Well, that was the idea anyway.
Coined as a "one coin toy" (pun intended) this was meant to be an impulse buy item at the checkout line. But you were more likely to find these in toy and hobby shops for 300jpy.
But even at three or four times that price, it was a steal for such a screen perfect little Goku figure.
An absolutely stunning sculpt on this little guy. Perfect sense of motion, well painted, and easy to collect.
The rest of the line failed to reach the bar this figure set, and it was eventually phased out. But when it was burning bright, it was on fire. A stunning little minifigure that could be the centerpiece of many collections.

scenegraph reviews: smp kit makes pose roll.exe (part 1: assembly)
Tumblr media
the roll is here!  how does she stack up to rolls of times past?  and what about 66 action rockman?  LET’S FIND OUT
so for starters, if u thought this was going to be like 66 action where it was pretty painless to get it together, i am here to dissuade you of that notion:
Tumblr media
this is much more like a legit model kit but smaller.  you’re gonna want a decent pair of nippers, for sure.
in addition, while the 66 action was pre-painted, roll’s face comes in this... attractive... shade of unpainted yellow:
Tumblr media
she does not look this yellow on the box or the stock photos!  so this was another additional step, mixing a better flesh tone and applying a few thin layers of it.  luckily, the eyes are decals, so this is easy enough to manage with a normal-sized brush.  nothing here is going to force you to bust out the 10/0 brushes, so that’s a plus.  but, again, 66 action rockman had no painting required, at all.
Tumblr media
in addition, roll’s bow is unpainted.  this is where we run into the next bit of weirdness: the smp kit wants you to use decals for everything.  everything.  roll’s ponytail is a simple little sculpt, but they want you to wrap a piece of paper around it so it goes from some detail to lol no detail.  (even the old singaporean roll kit from way back when pre-painted roll’s bow!)  naturally, i did not do this, and it once again was easy enough to do with a normal-sized brush.  but it’s another piece of work that caught me off-guard.
assembly is... well, it’s a model kit, but it’s very tiny.  so it’s quite hard on the fingers.  and even the smallest variances in the mold result in Shenanigans, such as roll’s teeny tiny upper arm not fitting together...
Tumblr media
...without copious use of boiling water and pliers.
now, does the kit make the pose?  well... sorta.  the points she likes to come apart at are the waist and antennae, so you’ll want to glue the antennae on, since roll is very small and you’re going to have at least one of those two points underhand when you’re posing her.  i have yet to try getting her into a seated pose again since i glued the antennae, but while the waist will probably always be a problem it at least won’t be as much of a problem with the antennae no longer falling off at the same time.
Tumblr media
i cannot stress enough, this is not the painless 66 action rockman, this should probably not be your first plamo rodeo...
but!  when she does come together, she is quite nice!  she photographs much better than ye olde singaporean roll, and she’s still quite smol, not even twice the size of 66 action rockman:
Tumblr media
overall, this is definitely a $25-$30 model kit, and once she’s together she doesn’t have much of a footprint.  so if you can pick her up for a fair price and you’re prepared to invest a little love into her, she’s worth the experi-ahahahahaha
