Thinking about the origin songs of all the surviving covey members. I can’t speak to color theory, and I haven’t read the books, but I do know some folk songs and recognized some names. Now I don’t stick to Childes ballads strictly when listening to these songs, but I will be listing the number for reference on all the names that have a childe’s ballad corresponding, just for ease of research.
Lucy Grey Baird
Lucy Grey is her own creature and her song is plain in the books. I think the difference between the book ballad of Lucy Gray and the one in the movie (the song she herself wrote about Billy Taupe) is fascinating, as the first one is more of a story-song traditional like, and the Ballad per the movie is so. Im shoving it in my mouth and eating it. Smarter people with more context than me can write better about it though so I’ll leave it at this. I personally think Rachael Ziegler killed it though, and her voice is high and clear, would love to hear her live so I could lay in the grass and kick my feet as I listen.
Barbara Azure Baird
Barb Azure canonically came from Barbara Allen/Barb’ry Allen [CB # ]traditionally a round sung about a woman whose lover dies of wanting her, and she dies of sorrow, and their graves lie entertwined with plants of rose and briar on each respective grave to form a true lover’s knot. My favorite version comes from Joan Baez. This is the only of the covey songs I’ve ever heard before doing this research, and I love it dearly.
Tam Amber [last name unknown]
Tam Amber from Tam Lin! Also known as Tamlaine, Tamlin, or Tam Lyne [Child Ballad #39]. An epic Scottish ballad, and a lovely round. As the story went he was a mortal kidnapped by faeries and has become their unwilling servant, protecting a forest in which he finds a beautiful young woman (usually named Janet or Margaret) whom he confronts for plucking roses. They doink about it, she gets pregnant, her father asks who got her with child, and she rushes back to Tam Lin and begs him to either get rid of the child he begot or marry hee, which in his current state he cannot do. He then devises a plan for Janet/Margaret to performs several tasks that will allow him to return to the land of the mortals, angering the faery queen but assuaging her enough that she makes good on her promise and reluctantly frees Tam Lin to marry his now beloved Janet and legitimize their child. Perhaps not the most traditional version, the one by Anaïs Mitchell and Jefferson Hamer makes me think yes, I can see Tam Amber’s parents falling in love to this song, singing it to him and the other covey children to put them to sleep.
Clerk Carmine Clade
From the ballad Clerk Colven [Child Ballad #42] about a real piece of work who tries to run off on his wife and sleep with a mermaid. The mermaid knows this though, and curses him to suffer a horrific headache until I think his head actually explodes. I don’t think it necessarily has any bearing on Clerk Carmine’s actual personality, but the combination of this song with the color carmine (a brilliant red extracted from the cochinil bug) leads me to believe he was either conceived, born, or his parents married while traveling in district 5. I can see this one being a favorite in district, where they know the danger of baiting the sea and possibly the danger of being a jackass to your wife as well. The location of D5 down in the southwest also leads me to believe it was one of the few places the Covey could have encountered the color as well, as often red 40 or other synthetics are used in mass production of vibrant reds and the use of cochinil based carmine would likely be a very “district” thing, used by native residents for painting or decoration of small items. It’s a strong name, and dangerous when it comes to taking a stand against what the capital represents. I’m surprised he was able to keep it. I reccomend this cover, dunno the singer really but the accent is heavy and his voice is true. I would listen with lyrics alongside though.
Maude Ivory Baird
The book tells us that Maude comes from the poem “Maude Clare” by Christina Rosetti, and Ivory from piano keys. I also like to think that she was partially named after Maud Karpeles, a British folk song collector who helped write down a lot of folk music.
Billy Taupe Clade
Likely from Billy Boy, ironic and fitting for its being about a man after a wife who can feed and care for him despite her being “too young to leave her mother” something Lucy Gray says about him wanting in the books (and seemingly not wanting much more). I don’t care much for this song (sorry), but this is an alright cover.

“by virtue of his trading skills, Smiley became their treasurer, carefully, setting aside enough for two rounds of white liquor and donations into the Covey bucket after the show. What remains they divided five ways. For his share, Coriolanus took another six popcorn balls, of which she allowed himself only one. The rest he would save for the Covey.” - pg 418
This is one of many moment that break my heart in the book, because it shows that he does truly care about The Covey. No one was forcing him to do that, he could’ve kept everything to himself and The Covey would’ve have even known. But he 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 to. It makes me so upset because if he’d just made a few different choices instead of purely acting on fear, he brought so much of his downfall upon himself. And it’s crazy because TBOTSAS really makes you want to root for him in moments like these but we 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 what he becomes. Anyways, what are your thoughts on this 🔥

Here's a small little request!
Lucy Gray x Reader (Established Relationship)
Lucy Gray is really scared of how you will get along with the rest of the Covey cause their all really protective of each other. Reader meets the Covey on a journey to the lake and gets along with the Covey. The younger Covey members treat the Reader like an older sibling (annoying them as much as possible) and it just warms Lucy's heart.
Just a cute little idea!
lucy gray x reader
I'll always be such a softie for the covey <333 (I'll never forgive you, coriolanus, for stealing lucy gray from them.)
you stare in shock, mouth agape as your girlfriend invites you to go to the lake with the covey. "what?" she asks nervously, before you engulf her in your arms, embracing her tightly.
"of course I want to go," you reply, feeling her relax against your body. "I never thought you'd ask, honestly," you admit.
she sighs, pulling away gently and shrugging, "of course, it's about time you visited my favourite place in the world," she smiles widely. this relationship was still new—it was delicate. you didn't want to scare each other off just yet by being too forward. so when lucy gray asked, your heart warmed as you realised she was finally comfortable enough to consider inviting you to the covey's hiding place.
she kisses you passionately, before hearing her cue to go back on stage. "bye, darlin'," she whispers, before running on stage—leaving you to stare at her in awe.
the next day, you trudged along the dirt path that led to the forest from the seam with a backpack over your shoulders. once you get to the meadow, you spot the small group and wave out to them. you ran up to kiss lucy gray on the cheek, before being introduced to her family. maude ivory pulled you into a tight hug, smiling widely and nudging her cousin's side. lucy gray rolls her eyes, brushing off her younger cousin. barb azure offers you a kind smile while tam amber nods softly. clerk carmine smiles brightly and hugs you as well.
all six of you hike to the lake, chatting along the way. they were practically grilling you, "what do you do?" or "what did you think of last night's performance?" causing you to feel flustered. you answer honestly, occasionally looking for help from lucy gray, but other than that you were already getting along like a house on fire.
when you finally make it to the lake, everyone strips to their swimmers and runs to the pier. "I'll race ya!" maude ivory calls out, sprinting to the water as your eyes widen in shock. without hesitation, you chase after her—clerk carmine, wanting to feel included, not too far behind—and manage to jump off the pier before she could.
lucy gray's laughter echoed throughout the small area, as she watched you play with the younger children in the lake. she enjoyed watching you get along with her family, especially maude ivory. her younger cousin was an excellent test of character—and she'd taken an immediate liking to you.
as the day progresses, you become closer with the other members as well. tam amber and barb azure, while often quite soft spoken, found they could be comfortable around you and would engage in conversation eagerly.
at one point in the afternoon, you lock eyes with lucy gray, who intertwines her fingers with yours and rests her head on your shoulder. "well, they sure seem to like you," she teases.
"yeah. I'm glad you asked me out here today," you reply, kissing the top of her forehead.
"boy am I glad you came."

Someone said a little snippet of domestic fluff? No?
Well, here it is anyway, from the next chapter of "Unexpected" u.ù (I am writing, please you all thank my wonderful husband who are cooking dinner for me to allow this):
Coriolanus entered the kitchen with Maude Ivory at that moment, distracting her from her anguish. He clutched several containers and three different brushes in his hands. He settled himself in a vacant corner of the table, away from Tigris and the vegetables, and pointed a chair to Maude Ivory. She obeyed with a smile on her lips, sitting sideways.
"Done!" she heard shouting behind her back, and Tam Amber walked into the kitchen carrying in his hands a child's high chair, one of those tall ones with a small table in front and even a seatbelt.
"We set it up," he told her, smiling happily and setting it down beside her.
"You and CC?" asked Lucy Gray "Oh, well, thank you."
"We're not done!" shouted CC from somewhere beyond the door "Get your ass over here, Tam Amber!"
"Language!" scolded Barb Azure, not even looking up from the pan in front of her.
"We have to do the bed with bars," Tam Amber told her, tousling her hair and smiling before disappearing behind the door again.
"Baby food is ready!" exclaimed Barb Azure, who had drained the pan "... It has to cool down a little first."
She had prepared a plate of little pasta and seasoned it with a drizzle of oil, blowing on it. Lucy Gray placed Anne Rose in the high chair, tying her down so that she could not slide under, despite her loud protests.
Tigris had risen and taken Barb Azure's place, to set about cooking their grown-up dinner.
"Try it," her cousin told her, handing her the plate and a fork, which were both made of hard plastic and had little animals drawn on them. Cute things for a cute little girl, Lucy Gray thought, and smiled.
She tasted a piece of pasta and glanced at Coriolanus, who was meanwhile combing Maude Ivory's hair. She sang, swinging her feet, and he smiled, serene. Somehow he felt her gaze because he raised his face towards her and widened his smile, bright.
Lucy Gray turned, disturbed, returning her attention to Anne Rose. She had thrown the piece of bread over the floor, with a shriek.
"You don't do that!" scolded Lucy Gray.
Barb Azure picked up the bread and threw it away. She whispered something to Tigris and went back to cook, elbow to elbow with her.
"Food!" exclaimed Anne Rose "Food! Food!"
"It's coming now. Take it easy!" replied Lucy Gray, smiling. She handed her a forkful and Anne Rose put it in her mouth, all happy and content.

Here are some Argentinian Folklore songs that remind me of Lucy Gray and The Covey. I've been listening to the tbosas official soundtrack on repeat for weeks, and I feel like these songs fit that kind of vibe, both sound and lyrics wise.
.
.
.
La Paloma played by Soledad Pastorutti
"And why does she cry so much? Why so sad, the dove? And why not sing instead, so the sorrows evaporate? A melody is enough to cross the waves I can soar alone in flight."
Zamba de amor en vuelo played by Tamara Castro
"Trembling with sky... I saw your eyes cry The night calls for guitar The zamba seeks oblivion And I want to sing to you..."
La ley y la trampa played by Chaqueño Palavecino
"In your mouth, I bit the apple Crimson with desire and temptation But I never imagined that by avoiding the law Into the trap, I would fall."
Adiós que te vaya bien played by Los Manseros Santiagueños and Chaqueño Palavecino
"I am not that one anymore, don't lie anymore (That yesterday's love doesn't exist anymore) The flower from the garden has already withered (A cruel autumn took it away)"
Añoranzas played by Los Manseros Santiagueños
"Tomorrow, when I die, if anyone remembers me Countrymen, I'm going to ask you, if you want to give me the glory May they play to my memory the double that I sing here And let the second come"
Vuelve a sonar played by Flor Paz
"I can pretend to love I can speak my truth The one that floods my veins With the magic of freedom"
Entre a mi pago sin golpear played by Soledad Pastorutti
"Friendship is gold That cannot be bought or sold It's only given When it's felt in the heart It's not something to be used Only when convenient, nothing more"

I just noticed that in my Spanish translated copy of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, where the original says that Barb Azure stayed back from the lake outing to meet with a gal, the translation says meet with a guy
