Sunrise on the Reaping changes the whole game. Suddenly, Katniss isn't the chosen one anymore, or the only person who can make the capital pay for what they have done. She's just a girl with a long list of grievances, coming from a long line of people with even longer lists who have been trying to make them pay for years.
She finds her victory standing on the backs of hundreds or thousands of people who came before her. All pushing for the same goal, all guided by the same anger and grief and the need to go out on their own terms. The same things that caused Katniss to reach for the poisoned berries for her and Peeta in the first place.
When Katniss gives her "fire is catching" it echos the same purpose the districts have had for centuries; honour the dead, make the capitol take responsibility: Sejanus with the breadcrumbs, Reaper; who covered his dead with the capitol flag, Haymitch running with Louella to make Snow face what he'd done, Haymitch running again with Lou Lou, Katniss covering Rue in flowers, Peeta painting a mural of her for the gamemakers, so when the last stand finally comes she has all of her living allies behind her, but not only that. It's like Haymitch said: "Those 31 allies I boasted of to the head game maker? I can feel every one of them at my back"
She has every person who suffered at the hands of the capital, every person who was abused, every person who was reaped too soon, every person who died, standing at her back and in the end I think that's what gave her the strength to finish the fight.

The capitol callously watching and commentating on the hunger games as defenceless children are subjected to horror and death but standing up and gasping in horror at Reaper ripping down the flag. Reaper laying the bodies of the murdered children to rest and looking to the camera asking for acknowledgment of their suffering only to be cut off and for the only reaction of horror mustered from the capitol citizens coming from the news of the death of one of their own. The Hunger Games will never not successfully act as a horrifying mirror to the atrocities in our world.

i need someone to talk about reaper ash from district eleven. i need someone to talk about him and how he had collected his fellow tributes’ body one by one after they died and covered them with ripped out flags as a way to give them their own resting place in the arena. and i need someone to talk about how, after lucy gray had tired him out, he just made his way to his own makeshift morgue, rested beside his fellow fallen tributes, and covered his body with the flag before he himself died.
and how that was literally all he did. he didn’t kill anyone there (which was not said to uplift him from the others because it is a kill-or-be-killed situation, just to make a point) despite what he had said to them the night before, and how he had his own way of resisting against the capitol by refusing to play its games. someone talk about him!!!!!

Seeds of resistance 🪐🌊
[ Reaper Ash. Hunger Games. ]
I can’t get Reaper out of my head. Out of all the characters, he truly stays with you. He was so raw and had a rage so many can relate to. One thing that truly gut punched me was the parallels to real life. The outrage from the crowd as a flag was torn down. Meanwhile not a word for the countless lifeless bodies of children. My heart hurt for Reaper, and my heart breaks for what’s happening in Palestine.

i don’t think Reaper is talked about enough. whether you’ve consumed the book or the movie, his character might seem small but his role is so important. Suzanne Collins has managed to give him so much with only so little screen time. from his protectiveness over dill to killing a peacekeeper back in district 11 to his deal/exchange with Lamina. He wanted to survive and take revenge on the Capitol and then started making a statement while he was still alive in the arena. The audience thought he was crazy, a preposterous action to gather up dead bodies and they were even more enraged when he tore down the flag. To the Capitol’s eyes they couldn’t even see behind his actions and what it meant to cover up the tributes, the victims of the hunger games, with the flag. President, Gamemakers, mentors, audience, they are all complicit to the murder of those kids. To paraphrase Peeta, their lives were never theirs and neither were their deaths. While they were thrown in an arena to kill each other, they were never the real murderers. The blood wasn’t on the tributes’ hands but on the Capitol’s. And with his last, remaining moments alive, Reaper laid down beside them, knowing and telling them that they killed him. All those unjust deaths under the pretence of order and for the sake of entertaining the eye of masses hungrier than the people in the districts. because while they could satisfy their gluttonous desires, there was one thing they were never full of: a spectacle.

I'm just thinking about people who say Snow despises Katniss because he sees Lucy Gray in her...but what feels more painful to me is that Katniss (and Peeta to a certain degree) not only embodies the qualities that the capitol despises the most regarding the districts, but Snow can see so many people involved with those 10th hunger games tributes in her:
He sees Lamina looking at Marcus in pain and killing him out of sheer mercy in Katniss shooting Cato as a mercy kill.
He sees Reaper Ash's burial and defiance by giving his fellow districts a dignified death and sepulture when Katniss remained by Rue's side and decorated her grave with flowers.
He kind of sees Coral, albeit in a much more ironic way, this girl who was ruthless and embraced such violence with the purpose to protect herself and her district partner, the one she nurses back to health and refuses to leave behind, with the wish to have either one of them survive the games, only to realise it was all for nothing once she loses him and is about to die, when she loses her frail little sister at the hands of District 13.
He sees Sejanus standing for the revolution and fighting for others in detriment of his own safety, maybe not even taking the best judgement at times, in Katniss and not only her protection of Peeta, Rue, Mags, Wiress, but also her general place in the rebellion and restless pursuit of saving Peeta.
He sees Lucy Gray, who stood by Jessup's side until his last breath and refused to abandon him, that never conformed to what the capitol expected from her, and her long lasting and unbreakable heritage and print in Katniss' during the entire saga, but especially in the song that haunted him once as a reminder of the monster he truly is, and that came back to haunt him again in his downfall.
But most importantly, he sees himself, a man defined by his sense of survival, by his practicality and selfpreservation, in this less than 18 year old girl, and that's what terrifies him the most about that district 12 girl: the fact she forces him to confront that he caused so much pain out of a hunger that was never justified, that he could have made SO many things differently, and that most importantly, different to what he would try to say to himself, there was always another choice, and he might have not chosen the correct one every single time it came to deciding what path to take.

Compilation of my old TBOSAS tribute art more inspired by the book than the movie (+ Book moments that didn’t make it to the movie), thought it might be nice to just have all of that in one place

The Hunger Games Appreciation Week 2024
➸ Day 6: Favourite District — 11
Well, I’ve learned one thing today. This place is not a larger version of District 12. Our fence is unguarded and rarely charged. Our Peacekeepers unwelcome but less brutal. Our hardships evoke more fatigue than fury. Here in 11, they suffer more acutely and feel more desperation. President Snow is right. A spark could be enough to set them ablaze.

so basically every mentor ever is just sejanus (having to mentor their schoolmates at some point) and then they turn into reaper ash (taking children into their deaths every year under panem's flag)

district 11 headcanons
district 11 is one of two districts (the other being 10) to have a noticeable racial majority
the merchant class of district 11 is very small, and even the nicer buildings in district 11 have become abandoned over the years as people are thrust into poverty
music is a fundamental part of culture in district 11; citizens sing while working the fields and orchards, with many songs having a ‘call and response’ element
family and community are important values, and it is common to refer to community members you are not related to as aunts, uncles, brothers, or sisters
much of the district's folklore is related to ghosts, tricksters, and ways of escaping the toil and struggle of panem - some important stories are about haunts that stalk at night, people and animals who escape bad situations and achieve their will through cleverness, and people who can fly
herbal medicine is used frequently in district 11
starvation is a big problem in district 11, so the citizens are resourceful with the food they have
the food of district 11 is distinctly southern, with stewed peaches, cornbread, grits, and pork and potato stew being common dishes among those who can afford it
district 11 is a very large district, stretching from modern-day georgia to louisiana, and as the population lives in farming villages far from each other, there is a cultural divide between the 'bayou farmers' and the rest of the district

MORE TBOSBAS SPOILERS LOL
the real winner of the 10th hunger games (and the boy who should’ve been remembered) was reaper ash. gotten five minutes maybe even less of screen time and still by far my favorite character for everything he stood for
reaper RIPPED DOWN THE FLAG and REFUSED to fight in the games any longer. HE WAS THE ONE WHO REBELLED. he gathered up people HE KILLED, people he watched murder, people he watched be thrown in a game and labeled monsters. AND HE KNEELED DOWN, TOOK PLACE INFRONT OF HIS FRIENDS, HIS ENEMIES, HIS STRANGERS, AND HE REFUSED TO FIGHT ANY LONGER.
he had the upper hand, he could’ve killed coral, he could’ve killed lucy gray, but he didn’t. HE COULDVE WON but he valued the end of the games instead. HE SHOULDVE BEEN THE ONE REMEMBERED. reaper, just as his name suggests (reapers collect souls) collected all of his fellow tributes and places them on the ground covered in what murdered them. not eachother, but panem.
reaper my beloved

Cannot stop thinking about thresh and reaper in the hunger games movie. Two black boys who are shown to really strong and could easily take out the other tributes. And how they're precieved as violent because of it.
But when they enter the arena they're seen as the exact opposite. The only death that we see thresh take on screen is clove bc she kept bragging about rue's death. Which we can tell hurt him bc if you look at scenes before the games he seems to be protective of her. And he could have easily killed katniss but he spares her life because katniss humanized rue.
And with reaper. We're told that he killed a peacekeeper in his district and he threatens snow but in the arena its shown that the only thing he cares about is protecting dill. He even defends her from attackers in the beginning and tells her to stick by his side.
And I cannot stop thinking about rue's death. And how although it is violent (a spear through her body) it's not shown in a grotesque way (I don't think we even see blood when she pulls it out). And with dill it's a similar situation. A girl with tuberculosis who drinks water that she doesn't know is filled with rat poison. And when she drinks it she doesn't convulse or do anything dramatic she just lays down and dies.
And I can't stop thinking about how those deaths are instantly humanized. Katniss and reaper both scream in anger when they find out about it. They cry about it. And then they instantly mourn her. Katniss stays with rue until the end and sings with her until she passes and then gathers flowers to give her a proper burial. And it's the same with dill. Reaper grabs her body (and the other tributes and removes their weapons) and he covers them with the flag of the capitol. To show that they're the cause of tributes deaths.
And then katniss and reaper bodly faces the camera and expresses disdain for what's going on. Katniss raises the 3 finger salute and reaper screams "are you gonna punish me now??"
And I cannot stop thinking about how when thresh dies you don't see any of it you just hear screams. And when marcus is in the arena he is tied up and beaten and shown as an example bc he ran away and he could have easily died a violent death from the other tributes. But he is given a mercy killing by another tribute. And when Jessup dies. It's because he has rabies from protecting Lucy gray from the bats on the train. But he also dies in a non violent way bc he was given water to scare him away and he just ends up accidently falling. And how when reaper dies its him being engulfed in snakes because he finally accepted his fate.
And idk this probably doesn't make sense bc it's currently 4am in the morning but as a Black fan I am glad that in a world where my people are constantly dehumanized and our graphic deaths are released in video format for the world to see and be desentized too....
It's nice to not see anything violent and dehumanizing about us in a series about kids dying to the death. Like everyone knows that the black kids are gonna die but they could have done something really violent with them and it's nice to not see that happen.
