It is Barbie season and this was my favorite barbie I ever had!
She was the dance n twirl barbie that came with a remote to make her spin on her moving platform. I could spend hours watching her dress spin or have her twirl the dance floor with ken.

Speaking of Barbie, I hope this doesn't come off as a "back in my day" kinda spiel, but I feel like there are less fun/gimmicky dolls/fashions these days?? The fashion stuff I see in the store anymore is giving very "playing it safe," which feels kinda antithetical to Barbie's whole "you can be anything" mantra. Lots of screen-printed patterns and generally cheaper, low-effort looks, y'know? These days whenever I walk down the toy aisle and see clothes with a cheap texture decal machine-printed onto flimsy fabric, I think to myself "if this ensemble had been made when I was a kid, they would have sewn those pockets/buttons/bows on..."

Sorry but I have to get this out and share the amazing dream I had last night!
So I was at a thrift store or something and I saw these Rapunzel wigs that were over 10 feet long and they were on sale for under $6! They were in boxes for some reason so I couldn't see the actual wigs themselves but I just couldn't pass it up so I bought one! It turned out that it was really good quality - not Arda Wigs quality, but still good quality all the same, and it was difficult to style at first but I soon got the hang of it. I intended to use it for a future Barbie as Rapunzel cosplay.

Fun fact about Barbie's Rapunzel
I'm a very big fan of the Rapunzel version Barbie made. Aside from the beautiful soundtrack and overal aesthetic, there's something i noticed maybe a few years ago??
While i don't know if this was intentional, when Rapunzel is painting different dresses on herself, the dresses represent different artistic movements!!
Tumblr media
The first one she makes with the paintbrush is the top centre purple dress, which is heavily inspired by renaissance styled dresses from times of Michelangelo and stuff. It's obviously very fantastical but if i remember correctly the reaction of her peers to this dress is that it looks too old or maybe a little outdated, which makes sense because Renaissance art is very old and has that antique feel, not very modern, not very groundbreaking (although it was in a way)
After that she makes the one in the top right, the big, ruffly dress that is clearly repressenting the Baroque period in art, where the main feature of paintings was pastels, the main feature of clothes was excess and the main feature in architecture was, you guessed it! Horror vacui. This dress is considered by her animal peers to be too much, similar to how baroque architecture can be a little too much for the eye.
Finally, the final dress she makes before making her official ballgown is the one at the bottom left, very obviously inspired by avant garde art. Cubism comes to mind, although i would say the dress has a very post impresionism feel to it similar to Gaughin's style of painting. Of course her friends say the dress is a little too modern.
The critiques mixed with the dresses themselves really makes me think these small references weren't a coincidence but thought through, making a little reference to classical art because, well, she paints! She's literally PAINTING THE DRESSES HERSELF!!!

In 2000 and 2001, Mattel paid homage to the designers working on the dolls themselves with a two-doll series (perhaps originally intended to be ongoing longer) called the Grand Entrance series.
Tumblr media
The first of these is in a blue and white ballgown, with a collection of white roses adorning her hip.
Tumblr media
The second was elaborately dolled up in shades of pink. Both were packaged with a "guide to collecting", in a bid to encourage would-be collectors to become full-time collectors.
Each of the doll credits the designer on the front of the box, and provides a brief blurb about the designer on the back, including a brief list of other Barbies that they worked on designing.
Tumblr media
One of the reasons I suspect this series might have been intended to be ongoing and then wasn't is because of the designer they picked to showcase for the debut of this collection, Carter Bryant. Carter Bryant is not exactly a household name, but it may be recognisable to people "in the know" in the doll world.
Tumblr media
On May 21, 2001, only a handful of months after Carter Bryant was showcased as the second designer after BillyBoy* (and the first designer who was a regular employee of Mattel rather than a collaborator) to be credited by name on a doll, MGA Entertainment released a doll that was to become one of Barbie's big competitors.
Tumblr media
And why is it relevant when Bratz hit the market?
Tumblr media
Yes, the same Carter Bryant.
This became the crux of the lawsuit Mattel v MGA Entertainment, as written about by Orly Lobel in her book You Don't Own Me: How Mattel V. MGA Entertainment Exposed Barbie's Dark Side, which I read not long ago and highly recommend.
I don't know for sure whether this was relevant to Mattel not continuing the collectors series showcasing their designers, but let's just say I wouldn't rule it out either.

I rly want to understand the coquette subculture. It seems neat! but I'm so confused. I thought I got it, but the more I look into it, the less coherency I see (at least, in a way I understand). I don't see any consistent color palettes, textiles, topics, ideology, makeup, hairstyles, music, community language or signals. I can see ballgowns & lace w/ glitter & then tshirts and flannels in a dingy laundromat. I've seen people recommend Little Women & American Psycho in the same breath w/ no further elaboration. Celebrities w/ completely separate style influences are often grouped together. I see a lot of idealization of wealthy femininity ("old money", luxury brands, mostly rich celebrities, preppy vibes, heavy amounts of skincare/selfcare/"wellness" routines which cost $$$$) but also lots of depictions life's struggle w mental illness, substance abuse, & others things commonly associated w poverty & lack of class/femininity (Cigarettes, sweatshirts, the aforementioned laundromat, not eating, pills, speculating about Anya Taylor Joy's coping mechanisms??). What is it that unifies y'all? What is it that I'm missing? I feel so lost & I want to figure it out :/
this is a great question and I can totally understand your confusion! the way I see coquette/faunlet is more of an attitude than a specific style/aesthetic but I still call it an aesthetic if that makes any sense. it's about reclaiming your own girlhood in whatever way that looks to you, we all look and dress differently but have the same sorta energy that connects us as a community.
it all began with nymphet, which was all about classic americana, lolita, lana del rey, gingham, coca cola, diners, priscilla presley etc. but the tag got censored by tumblr because many kink blogs were infiltrating this innocent subculture with sexual material. in this era girls were feeling connected to dolores haze from lolita through their own experiences and related to her as a tragic figure.
the community was revived many times but the current home of the community is with @coquette-club which was created by @lovesickbrat and also used by @bbabyyy ♡ there is a lot more to our history that I'm missing out on but if you look on my blog you will find more explanations.
there are many subtypes of coquette which is why you see so many conflicting aesthetics within the tag, from coquette noir (which is like an expression of French new wave film stars, 1920s aesthetics, Betty boop, mainly black outfits etc.) to bubblegum coquette (all things pink and girly, electra heart era marina and the diamonds, barbie etc.) and many coquettes on here either fit into these substyles or blend some together to make their own personal style!
the old money aesthetic is popular but controversial due to its implications, and I'm personally more into the thrifty side of coquette, and using pieces that I've had for years in my looks.
as a community we usually try to distance ourselves from the pro-ed/pro-ana communities as they can be harmful to our vulnerable members, since they promote eds and make them look glamorous which is something we don't want associated with our subculture.
I hope this answers your question - in short, coquette is about being authentic to yourself, reclaiming girlhood, community and sisterhood, incorporating your own aesthetics and interests (e.g. horror coquette) and expression ♡ if you have any more questions I'll try my best to answer them!

Which doll accessory pack sounds like the most fun?
The bondage pack:

3 gags (1 ball gag, 1 dildo gag, 1 ring gag),
3 pairs of soft cuffs (fitted to doll wrists, ankles, and thighs)
1 blindfold,
1 collar & leash set,
6 lengths of rope, and
1 pair of ballet heels
The costume pack:
1 schoolgirl costume (including long white socks, hair band & mary jane heels)
1 playboy bunny costume (including bunny ears & tail plug)
1 maid costume (including hair band, apron, lace wristbands & lace collar)
1 nightclub costume (including remote vibe & pleaser heels)
The pink pack:
1 50s housewife dress and matching heels
1 Bubblegum bimbo fitted pink wiggle dress & pink pleasers
1 Princess Barbie sequined ballgown with waist-high slit (including matching choker and heels)
3 Pink lingerie sets with matching garter belts (sexy & sheer, frilly & sweet, crotchless & cutout)
3 Pink skirts (mini, micro, and tight)
WHY WOULD YOU MAKE ME CHOOSE THW HARDEST THING EVER??? If I HAD to pick, I guess I would pick the pink set because that’s all the stuff I need and want so much 🥹🩷 I want my whole closet to look like that!! But both of the other options are amazing too! Why can’t I have them all😭😭😭

Incoming Sewing Rant
I'm sewing my own bridesmaid dress for an October wedding, and I had the whole thing laid out in my head: princess seams, A-line skirt, made of navy satin or sateen if I could get away with less shine. I even made a test run of the dress in black sateen as a Winter Soldier ballgown cosplay for SDCC and torture-tested it for a whole con day. Here's how it looked at the end of that day.
Tumblr media
Still good, right? Solid design, suits me well. I was also going to make something for the other bridesmaid bc she's 6 feet tall, built like Barbie, and ironically has trouble finding things that fit. This dress would look great on her, too, as would a dozen other ideas I had. I THOUGHT I was going to make us both look GOOD as bridesmaids for ONCE in my life. (I have been in so very many weddings and have another one next year, and every single time I've been stuffed into something that was the wrong size amd/or a hideous color and/or three inches too long and NOT ALLOWED TO ALTER IT. My last bridesmaid dress was so loathsome I got rid of it within 12 hours of taking it off, not least because it made me look like I was a Doric column made of chewed-up bubblegum.)
But then Other Bridesmaid went and found what amounts to a fluttery chiffon sack that will look amazing on her because anything does if she can get it on at all.
Tumblr media
And now, if I want to look even vaguely like I belong in this wedding party, I have to make something chiffon, and guess what? Every dress design in chiffon, when applied to my actual body (long torso, defined hourglass shape, pudgy), becomes one of three looks:
-Pregnant
-Wearing a Sack For Some Reason
-SIDEBOOB and also Pregnant or Wearing a Sack, Possibly With a Belt
I really should know better by now than to expect to be able to look good or be comfortable in bridesmaid gear, but the prospect of making it myself fooled me. Now I'm just gonna look like shit but with more labor involved, either because I'm making a shitty dress or because I'm scouring the internet for a shitty dress that comes in my size.
All of this would be relatively tolerable if I weren't surrounded by non-sewists who know nothing about fabrics or design but INSIST a chiffon sack (with or without sideboob or faux pregnancy) is going to look just as good as the fucking hand-tailored ballgown (with POCKETS) I was getting compliments on from strangers on the con floor. No, it's not! It's going to be shitty! I know enough about fabrics to know chiffon looks like ass on me for a REASON!
I know bridesmaid dresses are supposed to be hideous, but I wish other people would stop pretending otherwise.
Uuuuuuuugh non-sewists stop overruling the opinions of professional sewists 2k23.

I’m curious, which Barbie lead has the most costumes in her movie? I feel like it’s a tie between Clara (Christmas Eve dress, nightgown, Sugar Plum Princess) and Eden (Green performance gown, nightgown, red merry Christmas gown). It’s weighted in favor of Eden though if we count the costumes for her kid self and the bad future variant, but I’m also wondering if I missed another character?
I'm pretty sure it's Barbie from A Fashion Fairytale with the most costume changes, unless I'm forgetting someone
Movie outfit: Princess and the Pea movie costume
Casual outfit: Black shirt, statement necklace, pink boots combo w/raincoat
Casual outfit: Striped shirt, coral cardigan, and miniskirt combo
Fashion show outfit: pink dress with striped corset
Fashion show outfit: blue top dress with two-color skirt
Fashion show outfit: purple mermaid-scale dress
Fashion show outfit: Finale dress, original version
Fashion show outfit: Finale dress, transformed ballgown version
That would make 8 costumes total.

And the dresses in that mod 🤢 none of them at all fit the time period and I hate how they went through the effort to give the women dresses but put no effort into the men's outfits so they all look like they're attending different events
Also the fact that the dancing couples just kinda float around each other looks bad
I should preface this by saying my opinion is based entirely on the 3.0 and 3.1 versions of the Grand Crystal Ball. I don't know anything about any other versions that may exist.
Like, the closest comparison I can make between the dresses from the Grand Crystal Ball and literally anything else in The Elder Scrolls is the dresses from the Shivering Isles. You know, over two centuries and a realm away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A little gaudy? Maybe. But these dresses blend into their environment. The SRM ballgowns don't really do that. (I don't have any screenshots, but if anyone else does, please feel free to share them.) They are Disney Princess dresses, completely out of place in a pseudo-medieval/Viking Age society like Skyrim.
This isn't to say I don't think ballgowns don't exist in Tamriel. I think it's perfectly plausible and altogether probable that culturally appropriate gowns exist. But the SRM ballgowns aren't it,
The men's outfits are just. Okay. They're okay. Nothing is particularly special about them, but nothing is really bad either. Honestly, they look kinda foppish. But yeah, they don't mesh with the saturated Princess Barbie thing the ballgowns have going on. Which . . . is a shame, because I'm sure the artists (not Mara, she didn't put these outfits together) did their best, but their best would look better in a different game.
The only thing I can say about the dancing mechanics is that it's freaking hilarious that the Skyrim Romance Mod requires the Skyrim Sex Lab to allow the LDB and Bishop to twist each other into pretzels, but nothing is done to make the dancing even look dynamic. By Talos, I can't decide if it's haha funny or sad funny.

I think I really want to like the Barbie movie because I LOVED my Barbies as a kid but maybe because I have uncomplicated feelings of affection for the doll, it turns out I'm not the audience. Until someone makes one for a 42 yr old queer woman who did not have a problem with Barbie's femininity, rejected the patriarchy pretty young, and has never done really anything to try to make people like me, here are my notes for Greta and Noah:
There actually is (or was) a wheelchair using Barbie. There is not a fat Barbie. But you don't see wheelchair Barbie after the opening scenes. Also there should be a fat Barbie!
The movie is called Barbie. Why why why does so much of the plot revolve around KEN'S existential crisis? No one cares, he's an accessory. I remember my Ken Doll less clearly than I remember my Barbie's Oscar de la Renta ballgown. That's not a crisis for men, it's how the doll was designed.
If the Barbies are meant to be affected by how kids play with them, why isn't there more sex and nudity? (I know why) (but also my sister's and my Barbies were strippers)
Why are there SO MANY KENS like one for each Barbie, that is totally unrealistic.
Skipper has flat feet. Nobody cares about Skipper so it's right that she hardly appears but when Barbie's feet go flat there's no reason for the other dolls to throw up. They've seen flat feet before, come on.
Weird Barbie is not weird because you "played too hard" with her, she's weird because your sibling drew on her face, the dog got to her, or you cut off her hair cuz you didn't have a Ken like my neighbor Emily.
Everyone is referring to the movie as Greta Gerwig's but she cowrote it with her husband. I didn't watch any of the press tour so maybe that's part of the Barbie and Ken bit but once again, the movie is not called Barbie and Ken.
