if i made a graph plotting arthur's character growth with respect to time, im afraid it would reach its peak in s1e8 where he saves mordred and then hit a solid negative in s5 when he's talking kara and says "im not my father" before proceeding to blame magic for everything uther did in the exact same way uther would have .... (what appeals to me abt the whole graph idea however is that if we made one for morgana, her fall wouldn't even be a steep slope, it'll be like a. very sudden very sharp 90 degrees downwards)

anyway i still can't believe the writers made arthur go a hundred miles out of his way to save a druid boy from execution and then also made him forget abt that whole episode

okay but imagine mordred singing that “i’m gonna be just like you! no matter what you say i can do!” song-

in the first bit hes looking up to merlin in wonder cuz holy crap its emrys!! hes everything great and amazing, i’m gonna be just like him when i grows up! (protecting arthur and all that)

then he grows older and the song distorts, sounds lower and taking on a new meaning.

“i’ll follow you until the day i can smile at you and say,”

“big brother, i’m just like you.”

In your eyes, what is the worst thing that Merlin and Arthur ever did? Separately, I mean. Merlin's worst deed and another for Arthur. "Worst" can be interpreted however you see fit (i.e. most collateral damage, impossible to justify, unnecessarily cruel or brutal, overcorrecting into more harm, prioritizing personal issues over what's really important, losing sight of their destiny, etc.).

this is hard because i don't usually fault either of them for any of their decisions they made. obviously, they have both done bad/horrible/another synonym here things, but i think a good chunk of the time they are being influenced by outside sources into making said decisions. so my interpretation of "the worst thing" is definitely more in the lines of, this decision is something that significantly made a difference in events that take forth. not "they are horrible people for doing this and i hate them" kind of thing.

for merlin i can think of two things that he felt like he had to do but were probably very much The Wrong Thing To Do: poisoning morgana (even though, while this is incredibly shitty and i'm not ~excusing it~ literally what the fuck else was he supposed to do) and then the Iconic scene in 5x05 where he tells arthur There Can Be No Place For Magic In Camelot (big drum beat). its actually this scene where i do think, if merlin had not been hyperfocused on mordred and keeping arthur alive, he would have told arthur about his magic. it's a Classic BBCM Scenario: merlin thinks, or has been lead to believe through a series of events, that telling arthur the opposite of what he legitimately believes is what is ultimately necessary. in this case, he was very much wrong. because, arguably, if he told arthur there was a space for magic in camelot mordred would have either 1) died or 2) lived to continue to spite merlin but at least magic would have returned to camelot therefore making the events of 5x11 impossible

now for arthur i actually find this really difficult because i don't think the show has ever framed anything arthur has done in a negative light. (which i recognize is problematique but thats not the point of this mini essay) or, if it has, usually arthur does something by the end of the episode to somewhat exonerate himself. like the unicorn in 1x11 or with the druid boy camp in 4x10 (even though for this particular one i really don't fault arthur because he was a literal child)

also... i don't think the show ever actually shows arthur making a decision for himself that isn't somewhat influenced by other people LMAO. hes incredibly insecure and always asking people for advice (same<3) i guess i could say kara in 5x11 but.................... not to be ~controversial~ i mostly blame kara and mordred for that one. but obviously there's an aspect of that situation that is 100% on arthur. the three of them really teamed up in 5x11 and said lets create a series of events that will ultimately lead all three of us to our deaths.

also arthur was the one who literally said "lets go to camlann to fight" and then he got stabbed there so thats on him too

i honestly think that bbcm could have easily been six seasons story-wise (maybe with less episodes per season though)

It'd just be interesting to actually see what supposedly happened between s4 and 5, with Morgana befriending aithusa and getting imprisoned by the sarrum. It could have been a season more focused on individual characters, without 'morgana's evil scheme of the week'

For example I would have liked to see what Mordred was up to and how he ended up being a slave trader. It would give his character more depth in my opinion instead of him randomly showing up. This could also have been a chance to introduce Kara earlier, in order to not make the drawing of the dark an episode full of utter bullshit (bc bbcm doesn't know how villain arcs work)

An interesting conflict for the Camelot folks could have been Gwen facing the hardships of being queen and maybe Merlin coming to terms with his destiny and being emrys. I'd like to see the development of him becoming that obsessed with keeping Arthur safe. I mean, it started when Mordred showed up, but there could be some sort of buildup to it.

Rushing winds tangled with heavy breaths, left to linger with every passing step of the forest that was long gone. Twigs snapped and leaves crunched from fall past that left a lingering chill in the air. A chill that would have otherwise left them with white knuckles around the edges of their cloaks, pulled as far as they would to cover every inch of bare skin.

A fire lit for warmth in normal conditions they had both had and grown up with, but things changed. The comfort of a castle—they both had called home. People they could trust that cared for them in a way that they both hadn't had since they were young, or in Sefa's case since her father died.

But those select few people didn't make all of Albion. Others still traded and captured those of the old religion, in secret or under lords and kings that still allowed it. What little safety was restored was always taken back away in the end.

Kara had been reluctant to let the knights follow her and Sefa, scared that the safe Druid camp would become dangerous with more people knowing the location. Her fear of safety soon turned into regret as danger quickly came, all at her fault for posing the argument in the first place.

Rustling from around them left them stationary until the first arrow whizzed by, missing them both by a hair and piercing a tree instead. Her hand found Sefa's as they both ran for the trees. They both knew the forests like the back of their hands, but that didn't stop the footsteps that followed close behind with just as much craving to catch them as theirs was to get away.

The opposite direction from the Druid camp was taken as they continued to run. Every so often hearing the sound of an arrow bolt shooting through the air, missing and hitting other things than their intended target.

A turn was taken to throw off the trail, letting them both breathe for a second as they heard all other noises disappear around them. No more footsteps and crackling of leaves and branches accompanied by the sounds of their weapons.

Sefa squeezed her hand and looked over with a smile. Ever the sweet sight that would make even that of a summer day envious. "We're safe," she whispered. Dragging hope out of a situation they both had run from before, Kara allowed herself to take her words. They were safe, once again, with one another. Mocking years of their youth when they walked much the same, hand in hand with no fear and shrouded in promised safety.

But even with such a promise, her grip never loosened. "We should move," Kara said. Her free hand found the hood of her cloak and brought it to cover her face.

She peered around the corner, still taking silence for safety. A place in the distance caught her eye as another spot to hide, only a decent way away from them. They could risk walking with the presumption there were no nearby men, or take a run and not risk anything.

"Ready?" Kara asked.

Sefa's eyes met hers as she followed her sight. A hand found the hood of her cloak as she gave a single nod.

They watched their steps as they stayed along the ends of the forest. Knowing only each other's breaths and cautious steps, an outlier was voiced. They both halted as the other familiar steps stopped.

Kara turned with the littlest of movement she could before she mouthed run. They both started at once but found themselves too late.

Sefa's hand fell from hers, halting her steps and giving the short opening that was needed. The hit through the air of an arrow bolt came seconds before a yelp of pain. Sefa stumbled, thrown back by force and pain against a tree with her hand reaching cautiously for the object protruding from her side.

"Sefa!" Kara ran to her side, the faint noise of rustling kept their heart racing. She threw Sefa's arm over her shoulders, dragging her to her feet as they both attempted to move a small distance. Their fleeting run to safety, long forgotten as the rules of hiding they remember from not long ago were put to use. An alcove behind vines was used for temporary safety and she situated Sefa to lay down.

Her hands dangled hesitantly over the arrow in Sefa's abdomen. The object would make it harder to run but she knew removing it would cause it to bleed more than it already was. She heard faint yelling in the distance, rushing her for a decision.

"We have to move," she whispered, keeping her breathing down from the panic her body wanted. Sefa held back a whine of pain as Kara put pressure around the wound. She eyed the arrow with the pondering decision till Sefa said something, snapping her out of her thoughts.

"No," Sefa gasped with a harsh breath, "don't. We both know that will only make it worse."

More rustling in the growing distance made her heart pound harder and faster. Kara swallowed down her emotions and steadied her breathing. "We can't stay here long." Voiced in a statement, she wish it hadn't come out verging on a plea.

She felt blood coat farther around her hands, a thick sticky warmth that made every part of her want to pull away. Instead, she pressed more pressure down. "I can't heal you," she said weakly.

Sefa shook her head, "Go, Run."

Kara looked up at her with wide eyes.

"Leave me and go, Kara."

Her jaw clenched as she felt her emotions slipping away. "Don't say that," she quickly spat out.

"They'll kill you."

"And you'll die!" She snapped back, "I'm not leaving you."

"Kara."

She ignored her name being called. Instead, she concentrated on the pressure she kept applied while pushing every and all ounce of emotions away, as she always had.

"Kara, please!"

"I won't, Sefa."

A weak but firm grip wrapped around her wrist as she met her eyes. "You either run, get help and save us both," Sefa spoke, "Or stay and we both die." She struggled past pain for words.

Kara felt her breath shudder. This was her fault, this was all her fault. If she had just accepted the help, accepted that there were people to trust without a repercussion of harm, it all wouldn't have happened—Sefa wouldn't be hurt.

"Go Kara, please," she begged. "You have a chance."

Kara hesitated. "Okay," she nodded, "okay…" She released pressure from the wound and grabbed Sefa's hand. "I'll be back with help and we'll be safe, I promise."

Sefa gave a faint smile, "go…"

She nodded, taking one last look and breath before doing as told. Her hand left Sefa's both in questioned fear and uncertainty.

Kara's last sight was that of fear and love all while the fading image of Kara in the distance was Sefa's.
