- also it took like 6 minutes for shintaro to leave the house... theres other things being done ofc, establishing shinene's dynamics, quick exposition of how ene ended up with shintaro to begin with, and spilling soda onto the computer and leaving the house. but i feel like it wouldve been better if the anime stuck to what the novels + mr1 does, where ene blares a loud fucking alarm. that quickly establishes shinene's dynamic and easily leads to a So You Must Be Wondering How I Got Here type of thing, and then knock over the soda leave the house bam easy. instead the anime really took its time with like..... idk making shinaro look ikemen. yeahhh not the best choice, especially considered how rushed the last few episodes are gonna be. ok back to watching the anime

i am somehow so very grateful for this prompt :'D it was delightfully vague despite being so straight to the point, and this is why i decided to both follow it and not follow it at all.

here's the result

everyone keeps telling me puentalay are taylor swift coded but i've never really listened to taylor swift that much (i don't really count the radio hits i was subjected to throughout my life). so this was my excuse to finally get into her music! mostly through jessi's @patprans amazing vv edit from a while ago. i went through that whole list of songs in it and i have to say it was a journey.

from it, this love stuck with me the hardest. tbh i cry with it now if i listen to it bc it feels so right for these two. so thank you to you both for opening my eyes, i suppose XD not that i ever really was against any of this, i just didn't have the right motivator before. now i had that and the time. it was fun ♥

and don't worry, i also looked into red! i do know that song haha, i haven't grown up under a rock after all. but i had to look at the lyrics properly and i do get where you're coming from with this prompt. i can feel puentalay there, especially bc of the colors. which i wanted to hold onto even when i abandoned the song itself!

so there's blue, as their beginning and ending. there's black and gray for the missing part, for the loss and grief and longing. and then there's red towards the end for the love! which. truly if loving puen is red am going insane for a little bit. we have had the convos about puen and red, am not digging into that again.

i really love the way this song starts and how it seems to tell the whole puentalay journey in just, what is that, one verse? well, you know. in just a few lines we've come from their starting point to the inevitable tragedy of them having to separate, and then we've come to their reunion and persevering love.

so the edit tries to interpret all that. the first pic is about the water (which i've been thinking about so much and am going insane about it currently, there's so much Water!!), about how talay gets swept into this other universe and how he finds puen. which. i hope you get it that this is also about that glass house scene in ep 4 where talay runs through the rain to get to puen again. that's important. that's puen's tide - that rain.

and then there's a bit of fluff there. about the things they could go on and on about. about these moments where they find each other. about these moments where they... idk. are just lovely and in love. i wanted to show that.

bc i needed that before we hit the angst town! skies grow darker? currents come and sweep you away again? yeah, so true. puentalay literally just get together and then they're fighting which leads them to the secret island. which then, kind of, steals puen from talay a bit later. I tried to show all that too.

and then it's just. episode 11 part 1/4 heartbreak hours. that part is legendary and i love the angst so much even if watching it feels every time like someone is trying to carve my heart out with a plastic knife. but this line in the lyrics!!! it was just so perfect. gosh. (paired with the "and this love came back to me" like CMON i could make another edit only for that)

this then leads to the pink and the red. bc next we see what they had, what good things they got. the "silent screams" are, for me, about talay. about how he's saying he doesn't do love, doesn't really think about it, but still ends up seeking it. and idk, the dusty heart thing always gets to me. that's kind of his silent scream; talking about the love he does not want to the guy who wants nothing else but them to fall in love. how ironic.

puen got the "wildest dreams" then bc damn, that man has so many Wild Dreams. i didn't want to include the popcorn eating in this bc that would've made this edit cracky imo, so there's now just puen intensely staring at talay. this man is up to no good. his fantasies are horrible yet so, so cute. am so happy he actually got to finally live his popcorn fantasy XD what a doofus.

and then finally! all the things they never even dreamed about! aka everything in the our skyy eps. all of that was so good and domestic i bet they never thought they would have something like that. so that was for the last one. am kind of happy this took so long to make so i got those eps before this ♥ they're such a joy.

my Mylène album ranking 17/12/22

Innamoramento. I stand by this however the second one on this list is such a close contender. but come on, let's keep it real. this IS and will FOREVER be one of the greatest concept albums of all time, it has some of her best videos, the era was simply iconic and everything from the music to the look to the performances are sheer transcendent perfection.

2. Anamorphosée. What can I say, Paloma has shown me the light. Incredibly complex and very interesting, it stands out in her discography for all the right reasons to me... she literally saved Laurent from his flop era after Giorgino

3. L'Emprise. I don't listen to this half as much as my mutuals and IDK why💔😔💔 but it is her best since AQL'O like I can't lie

4. Cendres De Lune. Sorry but you can't beat the sheer energy and force of innovation this album brought to the second half of the 80s. Her and Laurent literally changed French pop FOREVER.

5 + 6. Avant que l'ombre... / Point de suture TIE I couldn't do it💔💔

7. Ainsi Soit Je. This + the next one really hurt me because they have two of her best songs of all time on them but I just don't find the rest of them memorable (especially nr 7 on this list) and as for ASJ, I prefer the remixes from Dance Remixes of most of the songs. Sans Contrefaçon drags this way up and also just love how fucking bizarre it is. it's playful it's raunchy at times but it's also dark and gothic. The Farmer's Conclusion is just her taking the piss and I love it

8. L'Autre. Désenchantée, Je t'aime mélancolie, Regrets, and Beyond My Control CARRY this album. Also I prefer the extended version of Regrets and I prefer the New Beat version of Psychiatric. I did love how they insisted on keeping her weird goth thing going, they really leaned into it on ASJ and L'A but beyond that ... 😔

9. Monkey Me. I love this album idk what to tell you lmfao I think it's her best from the 10s🙊

10. Bleu noir. She brought us some of the slayest singles of her career like helloooo... this album gets too much hate, I think it's very good and to me it is such a comfort album🥺 the tracklist is very inconsistent to me and the album aesthetic is not my favorite.

11. Interstellaires. This was hard bc I love this album and it has some GEMS, Stolen Car is one of her top 5 duets and the title track is just >>>. To me this is her best adult contemporary album, no debate.

12. Désobéissance. Girl this is her worst album by far... it's so commercial and so basic, not at all Mylène to me. The tracklist is a mess, the aesthetic does NOT match the sound... I wish she would've stayed in the Interstellaires realm so badly😔💔

And that's it for now, I doubt this will change anytime soon.... might rank her EPs or remix or live albums next. I was so scared this entire time but I was so brave about it

Kendrick Lamar - King Kunta: holy shit talk about a song that makes your jaw drop from first listen. every second of this (and the whole album) is so tight and purposeful. probably one of the greatest records of my lifetime. can you tell that rateyourmusic account is getting to me

Laura Les - ditch a body in the laundry (feat. Dylan Brady): INSANE FUCKING SONG. put that shit in my veins for real. this is probably my second favorite laura les ep, after "i just don't wanna name it anything with 'beach' in the title". unfortunately, none of this stuff is on spotify, the greyed out version you'll see in the playlist is my own local file from bandcamp. but it's on the youtube list!

The Beach Boys - Caroline, No - Mono/Remastered: i've gotten into the beach boys within the past six months or so and... it just gets you, y'know? and like i think a lot of people who only know the hits have this impression of the band as this annoyingly peppy pop band but like. brian wilson. there's some real dark shit to be found, and the absolute numb tragedy of this song just really stuck with me

Black Dresses - Kill All Your Friends: these covers!! damn!!! when this dropped i didn't dare to dream it would be a mcr cover, i just figured they had picked the same title for an original by coincidence. but ohhh was i in for a surprise. i think it was a perfect selection of song, and it hits in all the right ways to maintain the breathy desperation of the original while putting the signature black dresses sonic cocaine all throughout

Spin Doctors - Cleopatra's Cat: weirdass song. like i said last month, i've been into the spin doctors since their trainwreckords episode, and i've always had kind of an admiration for this song. it's so ambitious, and just fun in a way that's both silly and complex. it finally clicked for me eventually and now i walk around all day doing the little scatting thing from the "hook"

Savage Garden - I Want You: i'll be real i don't know shit about savage garden but this track bangs. i found this in the black dresses inspirations playlist and it just took immediately. i love the y2k era, almost kind of boy band energy from it, would definitely check out more of this band's stuff

Sam Smith & Kim Petras - Unholy: there are a lot of things to be said about this song but i'll keep this really brief. one, it's cool to see trans artists get a number one hit. two, the hook is really really really fucking good. that will be all

Brian David Gilbert - Tragedy: i felt really strongly about bdg's first halloween parody ep from last year, i kept listening to it long after halloween and it even made it onto the latest favorite album ranking. i don't feel nearly as strongly about this one, but it's still enjoyable. significantly, i've actually never heard the bee gee's original of this one, so the catchiness of it is new to me in this cover version. happy halloween!

chipmunks on 16 speed - Call Me: same thing as ditch a body with the local files here. imo this is the best chipmunks on 16 speed track, everything about it aligns just right and makes it feel like this is how the song is meant to be listened to. i know it's really just a novelty but, as i believe i've sufficiently proved, i am 100% willing to take novelties completely seriously

Fetty Wap - 679 (feat. Monty): apparently this became a tiktok song at some point? i have remained blissfully unaware of this fact until making this list. this one is just a nostalgia banger, funnily enough because of its popularity on places like vine. confession: i really did think that the lyric was "i got the soda" bc of that one danny gonzalez vine. happy soda saturday

Quasimoto - Catchin' The Vibe: another artist i know virtually nothing about. this kind of doom-adjacent eccentric hip hop is one of the hundreds and hundreds of styles i've been itching to get into, and this is one of my first baby steps

2. How do you spend your time when it comes to fanfiction? Are you primarily a fic reader, writer, or a perfect 50/50 split of both?

it depends on how free i am to do either, but i'm more of a reader than a writer. y'all be writing some really great fics that have me hooked!!!

5. What are your fanfic pet peeves? Do they have a huge effect on whether or not you decide to read something?

bad grammar or punctuation. i don't nitpick bc i know my own grammar is shoddy sometimes, but if it gets to the point where i can't understand what's happening, it starts to detract from my ability to immerse myself into the story and enjoy the fic. i do still end up reading them though!

11. How do you come up with your fic titles?

music!! most of my fics are named after the songs that inspired them. most of them are country songs lol (i do like country... a lot 🤠 cue my playlist for my current WIP Storm Warning). the other fics that were inspired by things that happened in my life get titles related to those.

13. Do you outline your fics? How much of a headache would someone get if they just looked at an outline of yours without reading the fic?

i learned this the hard way but yes!!! after the mess that was my first attempt at a multichapter (plz let's just erase that from everybody's memory), i realized how helpful it was to draft a rough outline of what story i wanted to tell. i don't think anybody would get a headache from my outline, at least my friends don't, because i keep it pretty organized (#type a). it's just bullet points of what i want to happen/scene descriptors/example dialogue that split roughly into chapters.

18. Do you have a WIP that you keep telling yourself you’ll eventually get back to, but deep down you know that’s probably a lie?

ahhh probably the songfics that i had planned for Wild River's ep Songs to Break Up To. i had scenes for each song floating around in my head when japril weren't together again but i forgot to write them down and now it seems too depressing since they ARE back together again and i would rather write fluff. if i do end up writing it, its probably not for a great long while 😔 it's still a great ep though!!!

was rewatching ep 11 finally and this came and broke my heart. we had to get this far, this close to pran to find this side of his - a boy who's every relationship except one is interwoven with false truths, who refuses to built yet another one on lies.

and isn't it sad? that the one person who truly detests lies has made a liar of himself for the ppl he loves. that he loathes it and he loathes himself for becoming that person but he loves them too much to hurt them w his spiky truth so he pulls those thorns into his own body, injures himself instead.

this ep, he almost tries that w pat too, about not missing his mother, but pat lashes out in response, and seeing him maddened he realizes lying won't ever work w pat. that's why he looks so relieved when he finds him at the beach later, bc lying doesn't work w pat. pat is the love he can have w/o harming himself, pat is the one who doesn't want his sacrifice in order to be happy, pat is the person who prefers his ugly truths to his dreamy lies.

and that makes a huge difference bc ik if the others had a glimpse into how much they've unknowingly caused pran to hate himself, they'd take everything back too. but they only required his fibs in the first place bc they prioritized themselves, they only refuse to take a closer look at pran bc they're still selfishly protecting themselves. the person who plays the biggest role in pran's life is the one who demands his largest sacrifice, the most hurtful lies, so lying to everyone else is much easier. it's just what he has to do to keep them happy.

ik we love talking about them as friends and lovers, but this is where being enemies first factored into their relationship. being enemies, seeing the worst sides to each other, then finding their merits actually played a huge part in their dynamic. if they weren't enemies, if pran didn’t want pat to hate him, in ep 2 he wouldn't have spat his vile honesty at him (he says it bc he thinks pat's guilt is what has him chasing after him rn, thinks pat's guilt is the only thread tying firmly to pat, like pat thought it was the song and guitar).

what he admitted was big - that he wanted to pat to remain guilty and indebted - but what was bigger was that he admitted at all. he held it in, held it in, held it in, since they were born, since they were ten, since they were separated 3 years ago. and now when he’s on edge, pat keeps pushing him, demanding him to talk, and the dam breaks, pran floods him w the truth. it's maybe the first time he's blurted his raw truth to anyone, and to his surprise, pat just takes it. he accepts it, then gets back on his point, like pran's honesty didn't prick his skin or shatter his bones. pran is honest, and pat doesn't break. that interaction pushed floodgates open, is what leads him to increasingly open up to pat the next two eps.

then we see pran burst the same way in ep10, and this time his spear of truth is aimed at his mother. her reaction is drastically different, shows us why pran forced himself to become smth he hated. she stares at him like he's sawed her ribs apart and tore out the beating heart within, when he's only given her what she was demanding of him. when he asks her why she can't take it, when he grows more frustrated by the minute and divulges more truths, he gets a slap. she slaps him, then looks as if she was the one hit.

the scene w uncle tong happening right after that is so significant bc here is pran, a boy who fed his bones lies to grow, who fabricated a perfect son to please his parents, who lived a double life for the friends he had and the friend he wanted. here is pran, who confided in his mother a terrible truth hours ago and was violently turned away. here is pran, who at this point swears that he's not going to live his life like that anymore, who thinks at least in the safety of this place and pat he won't have to morph into a loathsome creature, who decides he won't start yet another relationship on the untruth.

still, starting afresh is impossible when there's so much he can't leave behind. so pran goes home. pran goes home and carries on his lies. except this time he speaks it once. he spits into his mother's nursing arms, and then stops living that lie immediately. he told her what she wanted to hear, he's done his duty. that's all he owes her as her child. when he’s finally began to learn to love himself, he won't revert back to the monster he used to be.

Fob Tracklist Survey Results

Hi! So, about a week or so ago I posted a survey asking you guys to pick your favorite song from each track number across all of fobs albums, and these are the results of that survey, as well as the ‘perfect fob album’ tracklist based off of your guys’ answers! <3

Track 1- 

I don’t believe this is any surprise or shock that disloyal order beat out any other opening track... and I, personally, believe it’s the correct answer fkjsfk but wow 89 people saying that vs only 26 saying thriller which was 2nd... that’s a large rift!

Track 2- 

I was honestly a little surprise by this one, but the take over, the breaks over won track 2! just barely beating out of all the gin joints! (i personally expected tlotro to win tbh)

Track 3-

This one was interesting to me because the entire time the survey was open it was very very split, and even at the end the winner, dance dance, won by an 8 vote margin! Very interesting!

Track 4- 

ab/ap rights!!!! I honestly thought this one was the biggest toss up because wow all these songs are heavy hitters and some of my personal favs, but the kids aren’t alright won out!

Track 5- 

Much like disloyal order, I was not very surprise by the outcome of track 5. Hum Hallelujah is, rightfully, a fan favorite and deserved to have won this one! (just one yesterday deserved better imo fhsdkfj)

Track 6- 

So, track 6 is the only one that was tied literally the entire time. I left it open for extra time hoping the tie would break... and it didn’t. So, I had a non-fob fan listen to both and they picked the (shipped) gold standard, so that will be the official track 6 on the ultimate fob album but jet pack blues will be a third bonus track bc i feel like it deserves it <3 

Track 7- 

Yet another unsurprising one... coffee’s for closers is an incredible song and another big fan favorite! What surprised me is that 5 people picked champion... and that novocaine didn’t do better ;(

Track 8- 

Yet another folie song that won out... this ultimate tracklist is literally just folie’s copy & pasted huh... anyways it won by a pretty large margin, beating out sunshine riptide!

Track 9-

1. Your first dizi and how you discovered turkish dramas

Medcezir. It was back in 2014, I encountered this gif of yamira on the internet. After that I searched for other gifs and watched random scenes without subs (I didn't understand anything). Only in 2015 I decided to look for the show to watch with subs, and finally watched it.

2. Shows you're currently watching

I'm not watching anything right now. I'm giving a break from dizis, but I'll come back.

3. Your favorite genre of dizi (romcom, mafia show, contemporary drama, historical/fantasy, etc.)

Romcom. I love comedy and I love romance, so that's the perfect genre for me. But a show that has a cute pairing and a story that revolves around them it catches me. Drama is not my favorite genre bc I always lose excitement for the show after some time, but I tend to give it a try. I haven't tried any other genre, and I don't intend to.

4. The show you rewatched (parts of) the most

Medcezir. It's the first one, so it's the one I'm always coming back bc it's special. But Love 101 comes right after, it was the first dizi I watched after a long time, and it was in the beginning of the pandemic so it's kinda special to me too. It was like an awakening.

5. Favorite turkish actor and actress (feel free to pick multiples)

Serenay Sarıkaya, Çağatay Ulusoy, Hazar Ergüçlü, Demet Özdemir, Engin Öztürk, İpek Filiz Yazıcı, Kubilay Aka, Alperen Duymaz (although I haven't watched anything from him, every gif and video I see from his latest shows he's just funny and cute, maybe one day I'll watch something from him).

Kara Para Aşk, İçerde, Arıza (I tried but I have a problem with mafia shows). And Erkenci Kuş and Sen Çal Kapımı. One day I'll come back to EK, but SÇK I just can't anymore.

8. The show whose plot disappointed you the most

Sen Çal Kapımı, after Serkan's memory loss I just couldn't continue. And Her Yerde Sen, everyone says they love this show but the way Demir handled their relationship problems by simply locking her up until she accepted listening to him was just toxic for me, and I just don't understand how nobody sees it. I just finished bc when I couldn't stand anymore it was the second to last ep already.

9. A show that was cancelled too soon/ran too long

Fortunately for me I never watched a dizi that was cancelled abruptly. As for the ones that ran too long, EK and SÇK. SÇK should have ended before all the memory loss thing.

Yamira (Medcezir), they don't do romantic scenes like theirs anymore, it's amazing the amount of times they make out in this dizi. Seriously. And they're so cute and good with each other, I love them; DicBar (Menajerimi Ara, I never watched this dizi but every gif and scene I see they're just perfect); Sinan and Işık (Love 101)

13. Best kiss

It's Yamira's of course. It was hard to pick just one bc, like I said before, it's just too much making out. But after thinking about it, it has to be this one. They were both mad at each other so I was not expecting that kiss.

But there's another kiss I can't forget. Sinan and Işık are simply beautiful together.

14. An underrated show more people should watch

Love 101. I just feel that this show deserves more love than it has.

15. A show everyone loves that you aren't interested

Her Yerde Sen. I've already said my reasons, basically Demir was toxic and didn't respected Selin's choices. He treated her like a child at times, locking her up and not giving her time to digest the way he lied to her, and it bothered me, although she really behaved like a baby sometimes (which bothered me same). I couldn't ship them and sometimes I just watched bc of the side characters. Burak and Eylül were waaaay better together.

Other than that, I don't feel like watching Çukur, Hercai, Kiralık Aşk and many others. I have a friend who's watching KA and she's loving it, but I just don't feel it, you know.

16. A show you want to recomend right now

Medcezir. Just watch it if you like drama and romance. The first season is good but the second manages to make it better, especially the second half of it. Mira and Yaman's relationship just evolves to a new level, they trust each other and take care of each other, it's just beautiful (and most importantly, through most of the series they are together, they broke up twice in 77 eps, and the second time they spent like idk 10 ep apart, but when they get back together they don't separate anymore). And Serenay and Çağatay are just amazing in this dizi, they're great actors. And I recomend Love 101 too. It's funny, dramatic, romantic. The pace of the story is great, the relationships in this show evolve beautifully and we really get to root for the characters.

17. The next show on your list

The summer dizis: Cam Tavanlar, Baht Oyunu and Kazara Aşk. And I'm still waiting for Ada Masalı's teaser, but I'm planning on watching it.

waccha primagi eps 13+14 spoilers (finally the s3 game news makes sense to me)

I think from now on I’m going to wait to watch primagi on yt instead of watching live and then struggling to remember if I thought anything about it when I rewatch. anyway I’m not going to talk abt all the eps I missed but I just want to say that Hina became my #1 super duper ultra fav in eps 11-12 & I nearly had an aneurysm (positive) at all the pretty rhythm references.

I did want to rewatch 13 though bc it’s been a while!!

this plotline is ripped straight out of Kiki’s Delivery Service, but I don’t mind. no such thing as too much of a good thing (that’s how the saying goes, right?) !!!!

realizing that ‘waccha’ = ‘what’s your’ really broke me for a second. how did I not catch that. what an unbelievable stretch of pronunciation

overall I think this ep could’ve been better, and I probably had some thought about how Amane seemed to flippantly decide to resume primagi in a split second bc of a letter after all that talking that they did earlier in a way that made it seem like they just did it that way bc it was almost the end of the ep and they were running out of time... but Amane’s performance melted my brain so actually I didn’t have that thought. yay pretty song ✨

next week is the training camp. oh. why the heck did I think it happened in the off week?? ofc they’re going to make an ep about it

2021: A Year That Certainly Happened

In lieu of my traditional (lol I've done it maybe three times) "top ten things that happened to me this year" list, I'm going to share some of my favorite media that I consumed.

It is, in fact, the way in which I celebrated the victories of my personal life that inspired me to look back on the year this way. I had two major life events occur this year (advancing to PhD candidacy and a milestone birthday) that in normal times would have warranted some sort of party or trip but, due to the ongoing pandemic and the generally isolating nature of grad school, led merely to grabbing some more-expensive-than-normal takeout and watching my favorite shows at home. At a time when in-person socializing continued to be iffy, media helped keep me company, and will be what I remember when I look back on this weird time.

Music

In general, I felt like this year was somewhat weaker music-wise than the surprisingly fruitful 2020, but there was still plenty to enjoy:

-Marina: After the decidedly underwhelming Love + Fear, Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land was a refreshing return to form. I know a lot of people though the more political lyrics were corny, but...I don't care, they spoke to me? Personal highlight: "Venus Fly Trap", which imo is a spiritual sequel sung by the more mature protagonist of The Family Jewels' "Oh No!", maybe my fave song by her.

-Jessie Ware: What's Your Pleasure was my favorite album of 2020 hands down; somewhat surprisingly because up until then I had been pretty lukewarm on Jessie Ware as an artist. The deluxe version this year (released when she was like 38 weeks pregnant, btw) only enhanced this wonderful album, which is def not true of most bonus tracks!

Her collab with Kylie Minogue, "Kiss of Life", was also one of the best tracks this year--why it isn't the #1 song in the world is a mystery to me. The Pedro Almodovar-inspired video is also amazing!

-Go_A, "Shum": The Eurovision Song Contest has gotten less camp in recent years with the introduction of the combined jury/public vote system, but it has led to an increasing number of genuine bops making it to the final. This year in particular was one of the strongest in recent memory. While I liked the winner, Italy's Måneskin, my personal favorite was Ukraine's entry, "Shum" by Go_A. It's the perfect Eurovision song: it showcases the band's roots by being adapted from Ukrainian folk music (they even had to rework the song so it sounded less like the original) and using the Slavic White Voice vocal technique, while also being an outstanding pop song. Lead singer Kateryna Pavlenko's aesthetic is also impeccable.

TV

What can I say? TV keeps getting made and I keep watching. The first half of the year was pretty slow (likely bc of the early Covid shutdowns), but the summer onward was an embarrassment of riches.

-The Great S2: perhaps recency bias is at play, but my fav show of the year. It took everything that was great about S1 and turned it up to 11. Catherine and Peter really have the most twisted and fascinating dynamic of just about any ship (if you can call it that). Unfortunately it seems to have gotten lost among the holiday season as well as having to run against Succession S2--don't sleep on it. S2 Ep 5 is prob my favorite episode of tv this year.

-Call My Agent!: I spent much of the first half of this year watching foreign shows almost exclusively. This French show about a Parisian talent agency featuring cameos by stars of French cinema (and Sigourney Weaver!) playing heightened versions of themselves was perfect quarantine content--funny and heartwarming. I'm glad Netflix decided to order more after it was done. Also happy to see Camille Cottin blowing up!

-What We Do in the Shadows S3: another show that seems to live in the shadows (see what I did there) of more high profile comedies; it also continued to keep upping its quality this year. The image of the baron in the Barbie car is one of the most hilarious visual gags I've ever seen. And then there's this:

-Succession S3: Too much digital ink has already been spilled on this show. It is really good, though.

-Never Have I Ever S2: possibly Mindy Kaling's best work? This show does a great job of keeping you invested in someone who can be an incredibly unlikeable character. Perfect soundtrack too.

-The Pursuit of Love: perhaps a bit derivative of Wes Anderson stylistically, but I still really enjoyed it. Yet another show that seemed to have gone under the radar (maybe due to the Lily James/Dominic West drama behind the scenes). Recommended for fans of all things Mitford (but srsly WHEN are we getting a mini series about them?).

-RuPaul's Drag Race UK, S2: I've finally reached the point of fatigue with the multiple international iterations of Drag Race; if you have a Wow Presents Plus subscription, you can be watching new Drag Race virtually every week of the year. That said, I have to shout out DRUK S2, which was even more engaging than the delightful S1, even though its filming was interrupted by the initial Covid outbreak in March 2020. Plus it gave us this banger:

"New to Me" TV

Even though it seems like there's so much new streaming content that one could not possibly have the time to watch older shows, I still found the time to catch up with some older stuff that I had missed that warrant mention:

-Borgen: One of those shows that I had been hearing great things about for years but couldn't find until it came to Netflix. Let me be the first to ask where I can get merch that says "What Would Birgitte Nyborg Do?" I am a little bit worried about the upcoming revival season on Netflix, partially due to the fact that key characters are missing (always a foreboding sign for a revival, and already a problem in S3) but also because I wonder how the writers will reconcile Denmark's harsh anti-immigration measures as of late with Birgitte's historical pro-refugee positions (especially since she's apparently going to be foreign secretary!)

-Reboot-era Degrassi: Degrassi: The Next Generation was probably my favorite teen show when I was a teen myself. I fell off the show as the older group of characters that I liked graduated and it started to decline in quality, c. season 6, and kind of disdained the newer seasons without even watching them bc I felt like they were too glossy and conventional compared to the charming realism of the early TNG seasons (also Emma and Spinner got married, WTF?). Cut to earlier this year when, in a fit of nostalgia, I started watching the Degrassi channel on Pluto TV. I avoided the later seasons at first, but it ended up being hard since the show moved to a 40+ episode/season telenovela format starting in season 10, dropping the TNG suffix in the process. As it turns out, these seasons (well, 10-12, after which another period of decline set in) were actually pretty good--giving a much needed refresh to the series by severing ties with the first TNG group altogether and focusing more heavily on contained story arcs. Special shout out to the arguable emotional core of this era, Eclare (Eli/Clare), who have entirely too much chemistry for a PG-rated Canadian teen drama (and who I may or may not be writing my first ever fic about, oops); someone please get Munro Chambers and Aislinn Paul to star in a Canadian remake of Normal People, stat. Just look at them:

-Insecure: This is one of those shows where I was lukewarm on the pilot so I never got around to continuing it, even as it amassed critical acclaim. I did start watching the final season since it aired after Succession and absolutely loved it, even though I've missed the middle 3.9 seasons. I still need to catch up on those, and will once I get a HBO Max login.

Movies

I usually don't see that many new movies in a year; TV is really more my vibe just bc I prefer longform exploration of character. That said I'll still seek out movies that look particularly interesting or appealing to me personally. The fact that so many movies debut on streaming now does make that easier.

-Barb and Star Go To Vista del Mar: After Bridesmaids, a new Kristen Wiig/Annie Mumolo joint is going to be a must-see for me. This was probably the funniest movie I've seen in years, but it seems to have slipped under the radar in the midst of streaming-only releases. Features possibly Jamie Dornan's best performance?

-Tick, Tick...Boom!: I know that liking Rent is uncool these days (if it was ever cool), but its soundtrack was formative for me, so I'm def up for any Jonathan Larson-related content. Andrew Garfield really captured the spirit of Jonathan Larson, and I felt like the movie's overall discussion of what it means to be an artist and keep pursuing one's dreams as one gets older was particularly resonant (especially as someone who just hit the same birthday Jonathan does in the movie). Also my former workplace is featured prominently in the background as IRL it's across the street from the former location of the Moondance Diner, and it was nice to see the movie take place in streets that are familiar to me.

Books

I'm the typical Millennial former bookworm-turned-internet addict with a destroyed attention span who barely actually reads anymore. I have found myself with more reading time as my work involves a lot of time on a microscope that takes 10 minutes to acquire one image. Now much of that time has involved re-reading the Princess Diaries series (I was deep in nostalgia mode this year) and scrolling through gossipy figure skating accounts on Twitter (spending 5-8 hours in a dark room is quite mentally draining) but I did manage to read one new lit fic book that came out this year:

-No One is Talking About This: On the one hand, I kept taking multiple screenshots of my Libby app because there were several quotes that were either super-LOL worthy or profound or both. It does rely heavily on references that will only make sense if you are Extremely Online, so I do wonder how it plays to people who aren't. I also wonder if people will even be able to read this book in 10 years time due to how specific it is to late 2010s social media. That said, it is an easy read and it takes a narrative turn that is completely unexpected.

YouTube Channels

I never really understood the appeal of YouTube channels as one's primary form of entertainment until I faced a particularly slow lab period between finishing up my classes and writing my thesis proposal. It turns out that there is actually more on there than conspiracy theorists! Here are some I listened to while playing games on my iPad this year:

-Trash Theory: Basically an encyclopedic guide to most of my favorite music, especially his "New British Canon" series. Soothing and informative; I've learned things about artists I thought I already knew everything about and gotten a better picture of artists I've only been a casual fan of.

-Mic the Snare: Another music channel, I especially like his recently-revamped Deep Discog Dives on various artists; his reviews are generally well-measured.

-The Skating Lesson: I've been following these guys since I started watching figure skating in 2018, but I want to give them a special shoutout for their coverage of all things Russian figure skating drama in the lead up to the 2022 Winter Olympics. They're divisive in the figure skating community for their gossipiness, but their info is generally legit.

my first thought was that this was due to covid restrictions. obviously, some things had to be rearranged. and these things had to have been about specific people, because why else would the very, very busy production people put themselves through that?

i had already previously made an entire spreadsheet listing all of the scenes from 15x19 and 15x20 because i was interested to know how the songs of the day correlate to the scenes filmed, but this feels like something even more relevant.

as of right now, we can only speak about the 1519-15 scene. i went back to the episode to approximate which scene that was.

i am pretty damn sure it was this scene:

you know, the one that needed misha collins to record his voice?

they could have technically recorded him before/during filming 15x18, but just that this was the only scene in the whole episode that they had to film some other day seems significant.

and, no, they couldn’t have just recorded his voice remotely for this. the amount of work that goes into production, mixing, editing of sound is so important that they cannot risk a less than perfect audio quality. they have to record every sound at their ADR booths.

i can’t see any other obvious reason for this scene to have had to be filmed separately.

this places misha on set on at least 09/01, which is smack in the middle of filming 15x20. i was already pretty positive that cas is going to be back, but this only made me more sure.

in regards to the other out of order scenes, i wonder if the reasoning for them to be filmed during 15x19 was the same, i.e. if some actor (say, alexander calvert or rob benedict) could not be on set for 15x20, but had to somehow appear in it, so they just filmed the scenes while they were on set. only time will tell, i guess, but i am more than excited to see the finale.

*im not claiming that the 28th scene is one of them bc it was never designated by a season label, even tho both episodes list a scene 28 that has multiple parts. i Could be wrong, but i just wanted to list things i am more sure of than not.

...I didn't really like the last episode, I feel like it could've been a lot better/more emotional

I dunno if it's because I didn't like the last 2 episodes but even though the show literally finished I'm not emotional? The last episode I felt actually really happy watching was ep 9 but now I'm just 'ok, that show finished.' I'm sad bc I thought I would have a stronger reaction to the ending and them getting back together but I'm just meh :/

Really don't want to sound like those annoying people but damn really no kiss scene

I liked the ending, it was okay I guess but gmmtv better prepare for a shitstorm bc so many people didn't lololol

Honestly the best and well written episodes were ones where they still weren't a couple, like 8 and 9 were amazing

Although the finale was good, I feel llke in the future when I want to rewatch my favorite moments from this series, I will go for the first 10 or so episodes more often than not. It kinda feels like 2gether peaked around episodes 7-10, which is perfectly fine!! It was all in all a great series that did what it wanted to do and I’ll always cherish it but, I probably won’t rewatch much of the last two episodes

My thoughts on the finale: could've been a lot better, could've been a lot worse

2Gether really felt like a giant inflatable castle that was carefully blown up for the past 12 weeks only to let it rapidly and poorly deflate in the end

The ending was fine and was expected but for me it's underwhelming in the sense that the past episodes, especially 4, 8 and 9 were really written in comparison so the finale is kinda meh bc I knew there was gonna be a happy ending. But still the YouTube comments and what some people on tumblr are saying is ridiculous, I don't want to even think about Twitter but imo I don't think any of gmmtvs other shows can top dbks ending like that ending was perfect,

i honestly love that 2gether focused so much on the story and the emotion and became so successful without all the usual fan service. i hope the whole industry takes something away from that! but i still felt like the finale was a little emotionally stunted when it came to tine/sarawat. i just wanted a big YES, I CHOOSE YOU moment, and tine's reappearance and the bracelet scene just didn't do it for me. you know what would have, though? a kiss. or a hug, or holding hands, or something sweet

okay, my friends! here is my opinion on the 2gether finale first, and then i’m gonna address what i personally hold of the more negative response the fandom has shown. i generally thought the finale had... a solid ending. i went into it with absolutely no expectations apart from sarawat’s song and a happy ending, because i knew it would be messy and not as good as ep 4 or 9 etc, considering the sheer amount of open storylines that were left to be resolved in one episode. i knew it would polarise the fandom--but i personally thought the ending was fine! a bit cliche, a bit rushed, but it was okay and it was a good enough ending for me to put 2gether behind me, the first season at least. the bracelet scenes and shots were amazing, the song was incredible (although i wish they would have had sarawat sing a bit more), the conversation pam and tine had was solid as well! there were a lot of things i liked about the finale and bright and win killed their solo acting as always. however, there are some things i wanna get into more detail about that i feel could have been done better, not only as a finale but as a show itself.

time allocated for the storylines. or: plotlines in general. this has been my bone to pick ever since episode 10. not gonna lie, this wasn’t good, especially from ep 10 onwards. there were so many storylines and plotlines that were dragged out further than necessary, and so many plotlines that should have started earlier. best example for this is mil and phukong, the mil redemption storyline should have started in ep 10 and should have had him be sincere for once, and the mil/phukong storyline should have actually made sense from the beginning and started in ep 11 at the latest. the mantype storyline should have also started a bit earlier than that and given us an explanation as to why type was crying at the retreat. however, mantype did pull it off!

writing! this ties in with the first point. the writing felt a bit inconsistent in the last two episodes and it’s a pity, really, that this is one of the downfalls :/ all the actors in this series, from the mains (bright, win, mike, toptap, frank, drake) to the side characters (gunsmile, love, gigie, film, etc.) are such good actors and it’s unfortunate that the last three episodes were a bit :// in terms of writing and plotlines. they all did the best they could with what was written and that... yeah.

conflict. this has to do with the first two points. the finale felt rushed. that’s something that i don’t think anyone really can argue? and i expected that, so i wasn’t too disappointed by it or anything. obviously it would have felt rushed considering the fact that they had to wrap up 3 or 4 episodes’ worth of storylines in one episode, which was a blunder on the writers’ part. the conflict fell flat, then. if they had had pam come in earlier and had tine and sarawat spend more time away from each other, we would have gotten an explosive reaction. i really do think that after they got together for real, the writers struggled to find conflict to keep the story going, jumping from tine’s insecurities to mil to pam for no reason whatever. i think it would have been much better done if we had mil as an antagonist wrapped up and on the road to redemption in ep 10 and had pam come in there, with tine’s insecurities as a b plot. i feel that would have been a bit more gripping. but, hey, guess that’s just me!

order of filming. this has to do with people saying that brightwin’s chemistry was off in the finale. i don’t think it was off, per se, but it was definitely lacking when we compare it to their chemistry in ep 4 or 9 or 10, y’know? that’s because i believe the finale was filmed earlier, when bright and win were still getting to know each other and figuring out how well they could improv. and they can improv, from what we’ve seen! so there really is nothing i can say apart from the fact that it’s a bit disappointing that they decided to film such a pivotal scene at the beginning. if it had been filmed in the end, it would have definitely been better!

flashbacks. the finale needed all the time it was gonna get, and i am disappointed by the amount of flashbacks they used, honestly. i would have cut down on the number of sarawatine flashbacks and used them sparingly when they reunited, because that just... makes sense and evokes emotion in the viewer, you know? the only flashbacks that served well were type’s view of everything and phukong and mil, because they were new. it just... felt a bit inauthentic.

pam. or: the girls in general. there is nothing i can do here but SCREAM. pam should have come in way earlier and replaced mil as the centre point of conflict for ep 11 and 12 to have been as good as the rest of the show, or ep 4 and 9 at least. her character fell so flat and the conflict she brought with her fell so flat as well, honestly. the girls should have been done better--more of earn and sarawat! more of pear! they could have tied into the plot effortlessly!

mil and phukong x mil. yeah this is a... whole ass bulletpoint, unfortunately. call me a clown all you want for expecting him to have at least a half assed redemption arc in the finale but goddamn was that... not good. really bitter over the fact phukong was straight up okay with being a “replacement” for tine even though... that doesn’t even make sense. i just... yeah, this wasn’t good. i feel super bad for frank and drake because they deserve a well written show or at the very least a well written storyline for all of their chemistry and work they put in, considering the fact that they are so so young. i could go on about a good mil arc for ages but i just... yeah i’m writing a fic, so y’all will see.

the reunion. this stems from the flat conflict and the rushed-ness of it all, but yeah. it wasn’t particularly hard-hitting, but i still enjoyed it because it’s sarawat and tine. this has to do with when they filmed as well, and just... because the angst didn’t start early enough for it to hit home. and i really do wish we’d had a scene after that with the both of them, alone. a lot of their things happen with a lot of people around them... and nah.

one year later. bro. bro. bro. the music club thing was cute! but i would have just... loved to see them alone, y’know? a scene of them being alone and intimate, just sitting next to each other on the couch or at a football game or sarawat continuing bringing the cheerleaders snacks, even a year later. them going to another concert. anything where they were just... alone. i wanted to see them together! we got that with mantype and we even got that fucking... scene on the roof where mil and phukong were just fuckin around? yeah? i would have loved to see that with sarawat and tine so much. (also btw pretty sure the rooftop scenes with mil and phukong is also where drake and frank took this photo and it made me so happy dhsndh like... the shot where mil took his hand off phukong’s eyes? i called it immediately and my partner was like ???)

intimacy. chemistry. the biggest thing everyone is talking about. now comes the part that y’all all wanted to know if you’ve been reading this far lmfao, my take on the fact that was no kiss in the finale! and my take is... i expected there to be no kiss in the finale somewhere deep within, and honestly i’m fine with not having a kiss. my only problems with all of this are first of all, that we didn’t get a proper kiss in the entire series and had sarawat kissing tine one-sidedly. secondly, i would have loved verbal intimacy as well! an i love you, or y’know, some hand holding, anything! this is also due to the fact that i believe the series was filmed relatively early on. i just wish... again, that they would have been alone one year later and we could have just seen them being domestic, as we have already seen them!

so those are some of my thoughts on the finale. considering the fandom’s response... i can see why people are upset or disappointed but i don’t think it’s, like, that justified to throw the whole show away as well. yeah, the ending wasn’t perfect, but if you’ve enjoyed the show as a whole... maybe it’s okay, y’know? like, personally, i don’t think i’m ever going to rewatch the finale. but i do love the earlier episodes and i am gonna watch them back at some point, probably! it’s all well and good and valid to criticise the lack of intimacy and kissing in the finale i guess, but if you’re a straight girl then maybe... watch your words. 2gether has portrayed a wonderful love story between two men and to see straight people throw it away as “bromance” or say it’s the “straightest bl of all time” or whatever because of the lack of kisses is kind of hurtful. i am completely open to discussing this with lgbt people, mlm specifically, and you can come talk to me about your thoughts if you’re a straight woman as well. all i’m asking for is that you maybe show a little bit of empathy and respect, y’know? i also do think 2gether peaked around episode 9/10 and i’m fine with that! it gave me so much more than characters and relationships--it gave me the fandom and everyone here and words cannot express how grateful i am for all of you. maybe the last few episodes were poorly written and the finale wasn’t everything y’all hoped for... but i did and do love this show. i cannot wait to see where brightwin go next.

GUYS I’VE BEEN SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS ALBUM!! my plan this morning was to sit down and dig into this BUT some kpop guys decided to actually. do stuff *gestures helplessly* so FINALLY I gave it a listen this evening and I NEED TO SPLURGE so this will likely not make any sense alfjskndms

anyways! I discovered yukika by chance after @englishbunnyrocks reblogged a very beautiful photoset of the “soul lady” mv! I was so curious that I decided to check out the album and OH MY GOD I LOVED IT! and from there I’ve discovered soooo much more citypop music and artists I never would’ve known about! so moral of the story, don’t be afraid to check out new stuff bc you never know :)

also I’m sensitive to caffeine and I had a large bubble tea this afternoon which was a mistake bc it’s 11 pm and I’m still WIRED and it’s been Quite A Day! tomorrow’s going to rough lmao but anyhoo here we go

leap forward (intro): ok anytime an album starts with an instrumental intro you know they’re going to be dropping some muzak and BROOOOOOO this intro is so incredible! I feel like it’s the theme song to one of those old science videos we would watch in school! buckle up kids!!! it sets the atmosphere so perfectly for the rest of the album. this is just pure retro goodness, I could listen to 10 hours of this stuff!

insomnia: THAT FUNKY GROOVE!!!!! OH MY GOD that’s such a killer bassline!! and I love how all the elements on top are so floaty and sparkling, I feel like I’m walking through a fancy bejewled cloud! literally the definition of a “chill bop”, if you don’t bob your head to this there’s something wrong with you idk. compared to how in-your-face “soul lady” was as a title track, I actually really liked the subtle nature of this song and I think it really plays to yukika’s strengths! 

lovemonth: YES YES YES I loved this song when it came out as a pre-release single a while back, and again other k-artists do citypop but no one does it quite like her! I LOVE the melody in the chorus, it’s so damn catchy! love the synths happening all over the place here, this is just such a fun song

time travel: omg wow that intro is SO interesting! a little heavier on the percussion than the previous songs, the baseline is more prominent here. god I just want to drive with the windows down and BLAST this, absolutely perfect vibes for summer! it’s quite complex with some background vocals, synths, and horns going on at the same time and the layering is so interesting!

secret: grab your platform heels and sequined jackets, she said we’re going to the DISCO! I’m just dancing around in my chair woo hoo party of one!!! it’s nice to hear something more fast-paced after the previous songs. OH MY GOD THAT CHORUS IM LOSING MY MINDDDDDD I literally don’t even know what to say, I’m already caffeinated and I feel like I just took another espresso shot, this song is releasing some neurotransmitters babey! absolute BOP.

pung!: don’t know what the title means but we’re going to go with it! ahhh the intro sounds so magical and dreamy! an easy-going song that’s not trying too hard, just vibes. her voice is so beautiful :’) I love how all the elements are just swirling around each other and it really helps to give it that nostalgic glow. a perfect way to close out the album!

overall: YUKIKA. DELIVERS. AGAIN. this is such a cohesive, well-made ep and you can tell every element has been so thoughtfully placed! I really love retro-sounding music - no one did synths like the 80s! but when it comes to actual retro songs, I like the vibe but often times the production seems dated, which I know is the charm for some people, but I prefer a little more “oomph” when I’m listening to music. yukika has filled that gap perfectly for me, pairing those retro influences with some juicy modern production and I’m honestly SO GLAD I’ve discovered her! I’m definitely going to jamming to this stuff all summer!

19. Hit the road Jack - Ray Charles (reminds me of doing the “end of school year” festival we did at out school. We had a number where we danced to songs from different decades and I obvs chose the 50s-60s bc <3)
