We are called to be holy; in fact, Scripture tells us that βwithout [holiness] no one will see the Lordβ (Hebrews 12:14).
Unfortunately, many Christians have a βform of godlinessβ without being indwelt by the Holy Spirit. They may wear a cross necklace, go to church, get baptized, and yet they arenβt saved. Unlike what C.S. Lewis believed, no one can will themselves to become a Christian (Romans 8:7). God alone draws His elect to Him. How does one become a Christian? As Martyn Lloyd-Jones said: βNo man can do it, no priest can do it, no church can do it, no human or authority or power can ever do it, it's impossible. It's not within the realm of the possibilities opened to men to make anybody else a Christian... How does it happen [then]? ... It is God alone who can do that.β
Many Christians live secretly in sin. They might have the outward appearance of holiness, they may fool us, and we may never find out about their allegiance to sin in this life, but God will not be mocked and they will not inherit the kingdom of God.
The apostle Paul is clear: avoid the ones living unholy lives. Paul preaches total avoidance, to the point of βnot even to eatβ with a βso-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindlerβ (1 Corinthians 5:11). Avoiding Christians who are living outside of Godβs will is a command. We must minister to them so that they may truly repent of their sins and believe, but the apostle Paul is clear that we are not to be friends with such so-called Christians living in rebellion against God's Word.
Be holy, as He is holy (1 Peter 1:16).
The Lord Jesus gives special revelations of himself to his people. Even if Scripture did not declare this, there are many of the children of God who could testify the truth of it from their own experience. They have had manifestations of their Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in a peculiar manner, such as no mere reading or hearing could afford. In the biographies of eminent saints, you will find many instances recorded in which Jesus has been pleased, in a very special manner to speak to their souls, and to unfold the wonders of his person; yea, so have their souls been steeped in happiness that they have thought themselves to be in heaven, whereas they were not there, though they were well nigh on the threshold of itβfor when Jesus manifests himself to his people, it is heaven on earth; it is paradise in embryo; it is bliss begun. Especial manifestations of Christ exercise a holy influence on the believerβs heart. One effect will be humility. If a man says, βI have had such-and-such spiritual communications, I am a great man,β he has never had any communion with Jesus at all; for βGod hath respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.β He does not need to come near them to know them, and will never give them any visits of love. Another effect will be happiness; for in Godβs presence there are pleasures for evermore. Holiness will be sure to follow. A man who has no holiness has never had this manifestation. Some men profess a great deal; but we must not believe any one unless we see that his deeds answer to what he says. βBe not deceived; God is not mocked.β He will not bestow his favours upon the wicked: for while he will not cast away a perfect man, neither will he respect an evil doer. Thus there will be three effects of nearness to Jesusβhumility, happiness, and holiness. May God give them to thee, Christian!

Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1
The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.
So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.
So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.
Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.
And the probe is working again.
From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.
Everyone gives Sherlock Holmes a hard time about being mean about Watson's writing, but honestly imagine you told your roommate "sure, you can write up an account of my work for the newspaper," thinking it would be like, about the murder, but then he publishes it and it's 90% about you, as a person, and it's a huge hit and now everyone in London knows that you hoard newspapers and do cocoaine when you're depressed. Because I think you'd be little miffed too.
i went to a tiny counterserve diner once and accidentally poured sugar instead of salt all over my hashbrowns and was eating them sadly anyways. the waitress took them away and started making me another one and I tried to protest, but she just snorted and said "we're not catholic here". now every time i'm doing something painful out of obligation i think about how that is not repenting, this body is not a catholic establishment, there is no nobility in suffering.
is THIS your man? [shows an image of a malnourished injured exhausted man with big sad eyes looking up at the camera with blood smeared all over his face and mouth. and he is visibly trembling]
