For a week or so I've been thinking of the way Merlin's magic could be revealed to Arthur...

Like I have this scene in my head: Arthur is wounded badly and can't fight so Merlin has to use his powers to not let them both die. And Arthur watches his silly servant becoming really REALLY terrifying in the battle and fighting ten enemies alone and he's like "oh shit". But Arthur isn't scared of Merlin — he feels (even if he doesn't know this for sure) that this power will never be used against him or to hurt him. He is sad, disappointed, devastated, confused — but not even a bit scared.

After all the enemies are dead Merlin insists on staying overnight in the cave nearby 'cause Arthur is too weak due to blood loss. He makes a fire and arranges a bed for Arthur. Merlin is confused too as he thinks that tomorrow everything he loved, everything he fought for will end — and maybe his life too. To cheer up a little bit Merlin plays with sparks and smoke, making different figures out of them. There are dragons, monsters and magical creatures. There are silhouettes of people, mostly noble knights with sparkling swords of fire...

Arthur is befuddled by all this. He was taught that magic is always evil and now there's Merlin, the concentration of kindness and love and everything good, and he has magic- But besides being confused Arthur is fascinated by these tricks. He is like a child who saw something completely new and is enchanted by it and wants to learn everything about this thing. Arthur knows Merlin won't use magic against him so he wants to know how magic can be beautiful.

So Arthur asks Merkin to show him anything Merlin wants. Just any magical trick, no matter which. Merlin is bewildered but he uses the opportunity to convince Arthur that magic isn't good or bad itself — it depends on in what hands it is. So he makes a palace out of the flames and shows Arthur pictures from Camelot's history, his eyes glowing with magic and blazes of fire. And this scene stays in Arthur's memory forever
