CW: LONG ASS RANTING + POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR MUSHROOM OASIS
ok. so this just occurred to me mid adhd deep dive.
y'know Paras and Parasect? the mushroom crab (?) Pokemon? so I just recently learned more about the mushrooms on their bodies. what I want to personally highlight is this, taken straight from Bulbapedia from Parasect's page:
"The insect has been drained of nutrients and is now under the control of the fully-grown tochukaso. Removing the mushroom will cause Parasect to stop moving."
the bolded area is the area I want to focus on, because this implies that Parasect is dead. the mushroom has completely taken over Parasect's cold dead corpse.
why am I saying this?? well, those mushrooms are actually real. tochukaso are the Japanese name of a parasitic fungi called ophiocordyceps sinensis, or just "caterpillar fungus" in Western areas. basically they're mushrooms that do the same thing that the tochukaso does to Paras and Parasect: "replaces the host tissue and can affect the behavior of its host."

my theory?: Mychael isn't a naturally-born mushroom creature, he died in the oasis and became the host of parasitic mushrooms, specifically the tochukaso. and I'm proud to say I actually have a bit of evidence behind this.
both mushrooms in general look really fuckin' similar. reddish in color with white dots with a pointed cap. also, tochukaso can give off spores that are attached to Paras eggs...

on the topic of releasing spores comes my second point: tochukaso are used in China for medical remedies, as well as aphrodisiac. as it may seem, the spores that Mychael can release have an aphrodisiac effect on us.
"well how do you explain his horns and tail?" fourth point: parasitic mushrooms, more often than not, produce more mushroom appendages onto the host. examples:

DnD Worldbuilding - Utalies

The world of Utalies is a warm plant covered in wet bogs that sparkle with gold and silver dust.
The gold comes from the rich mineral found in the water and often make entire swamps shine in the sunlight. The Federation has been known to drain the bogs to filter the water but the dust is small and 10 cubic feet of water will usually contain no more then a single coin worth of gold making most ponds valued at a 100 gold or less and usually not nearly worth the effort. However due to the mineral rich earth of Utalies many of its nutrient sucking plants have also begun to sparkle with gold flakes. The Utalies fungal patch, a green mushroom is dotted with twinkling gold specks due to sucking in the mineral rich water from the bogs. While the fungus is edible The Federation mostly harvests the mushroom for boiling down into a gold stock which is then melted down into coins, but like the bogs this process requires a lot of effort and for every 10 lbs of mushrooms it will often yield no more then 1 gold. The Utalies fungal tower is a yellow mound of fungus that grows around the bogs sucking in not gold but the other mineral left behind by the fungal patch. The minerals harden into gems within the meat of there bodies forming tiny pieces of quartz but sometimes a much rarer gemstone can be found within, prompting many in the Federation to harvest the fungus hoping for that one big score. Crystalline gators fill the swamps, there skin hardening with the intense minerals mixtures of the water. This makes them extremely tough, causing them to be immune to none magical attacks and can even reflect ray magic attacks back onto the casters. Because the gator posse such a great threat wizards and psions are hired by the 100s to hunt them down and keep there populations low, but the more magic being used the more the gators seem to adapt, with some even reported to being immune to low level magic. The greatest gator Diamond Scale, is said to be immune to everything and the size of a tower, wondering in the deepest swamps he is over a 1000 years old and nearly a god. While he does not attack his cult of reptilians fight on his behalf raiding the Federation and attacking towns so they may bring tribute back to there deity. Trying to win back the world they want to make the Federation pay for every crystalline gators they have ever killed and every once of fire-gel they have every mined.

Fathers are our most influential role models and since we celebrate parental bonding on Father’s Day on Sunday, we decided to spoil our dad with a hearty vegetarian Keema lunch or an evening barbecue. As a gesture to recognize and appreciate the lessons we have learned from him and all the love he has shown us, we decided to prepare some tasty meals for him because, to be honest, that A man’s heart goes through the stomach.
A hearty meal is all it takes to break away from his strong and tough side and be a total teddy bear whose bright smile lights up our world. From walnut, eggplant, and mushroom keema curry to grilled walnut-crusted pineapple and walnut panna cotta, here are some walnut delicacies to pamper your dad while taking care of his health.
Walnut, Eggplant & Mushroom Keema Curry
Walnut, Eggplant & Mushroom Keema Curry (California Walnuts)
Ingredients:
150g walnuts, chopped
1 tablespoon of oil
1 onion, chopped
1 red chilli, finely diced
1 tablespoon of medium-sized curry powder
1 teaspoon of ground turmeric
1 eggplant, cut into 1 cm cubes
200g mushrooms, sliced
400g can of chopped tomatoes
100g baby spinach
225g basmati rice, cooked
Method:
Soak walnuts in lukewarm water for 20 minutes, drain well. In the meantime, heat the oil in a large pan and fry the onion and chilli for 4-5 minutes, add the spices and then eggplant and mushrooms, fry for another 4-5 minutes.
Stir in tomatoes, 100 ml water and walnuts, bring to the boil, cover and simmer for 10 minutes. Stir in the spinach until it has just collapsed and season. Serve with cooked basmati rice.

Ingredients:
100g walnuts, finely chopped
2 tablespoons of maple syrup plus extra for serving
1 large pineapple, peeled, pitted and cut into 12 wedges
50g butter, soft
2 tablespoons of powdered sugar
Method:
Preheat the oven to 200 ° C. Mix walnuts and maple syrup and spread on a small baking sheet lined with baking paper, bake for 7-8 minutes until golden brown and allow to cool.
In the meantime, grill the pineapple in 2 servings for 2 minutes on each side to get golden bar marks. In a small bowl, beat the butter and powdered sugar until frothy, stir in 25 g of walnut crumbs.
Sprinkle the grilled pineapple with the remaining walnut crumbs, a dash of maple syrup and a spoonful of walnut butter.
Cooks tip:
Great for grilling. Try stirring the 25g walnut crumbs in vanilla ice cream instead of the whipped butter.

Ingredients:
100g walnuts, chopped

1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste
50g powdered sugar
3 sheets of gelatine
100ml whole milk
200g mixed berries for serving
Method:
Grease 4 x 200 ml dariole molds. Finely chop 75 g of the walnuts in a food processor and add to a small saucepan with cream, vanilla and sugar, bring to the boil briefly and remove from the stove. Let it steep until it cools.
Meanwhile soak the gelatine in cold water for 5 minutes, drain and squeeze out any excess liquid. Put the milk in a small saucepan and heat until steam forms, stir in the soaked gelatin from the heat and stir until it has dissolved. Mix into the walnut and cream mixture. Pour into the dariole molds and refrigerate for 4-5 hours until they are firm.
To serve, dip the molds briefly in a bowl with hot water, turn them out onto small plates and serve with mixed fruit and the remaining chopped walnuts.

Plant-Based vs Animal-Based
A plant-based diet consists mainly of whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits, and doesn’t rely on animal protein as its main source of nutrients. According to the National Kidney Foundation, this may differ from a Vegan diet because a plant-based diet may include things like eggs, milk, and honey, whereas a Vegan diet tends to avoid all products derived from animals and extends into the realm of a lifestyle philosophy. 1
Comparison with an animal-based diet
People choose to adopt a plant-based diet mainly for its health benefits but may choose to do so for ethical and environmental reasons as well. We’ll look at a comparison below:
Plant-Based:

I was first introduced to the concept of Veganism through an article I read in Source Magazine in the early 2000s. One of my favourite rappers spoke about his long-term veganism and held conspiracy theories about the meat industry injecting addictive substances into meat that made it more difficult than normal to give up meat. I was young and impressionable then and wanted to see if this was true. So I gave it a try for a couple months. That stretched into a year, afterwhich, I started eating animal products again.
Now, both my Fiancé’s parents are active Vegans and make a great case for a plant-based lifestyle. I’ve experimented with a vegan diet, and can vouch for the benefits it has in terms of increased energy levels and a general sense of well-being.
I did find I was buying food more often on a plant-based diet because my body digested meals easier. 
One of the negatives that come with a plant-based diet are the reduced menu options at most restaurants. You’re handed a menu of 10 items, out of which 3-4 will be plant-based options, if you’re lucky. 
I’ve had to come up with dinners for special occasions for my in-laws, which has forced me to create delicious plant-based substitutes where meat and dairy would normally be used (cashew cream in place of dairy, mushrooms/beets/tofu in place of meat). I’ve always wanted to create a restaurant menu with about 8-10 items, each with a vegan equivalent. This gives all people a chance to choose something from the menu without feeling excluded and promotes a higher chance of people choosing a healthier option.
One of my favourite recipes during the winter is a warm comforting chilli.
I like to incorporate every scrap vegetable I have in my fridge, in this instance, I happened to have some beets left over from the night before.

Ingredients
100g Red Kidney Beans100g
White navy beans (optional)
1 medium yellow onion
1 celery stalk
1 carrot
1 tomato
2 bay leaves
5 cloves garlic
1 russet potato
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
3 tbsp cumin
3-4 Morena chilies, or chipotle peppers
¼ cup brown sugar
½ can tomato paste
3 tbsp Olive oil
6L water
Kosher salt and black pepper to taste
 1 deep stock pot
1 wooden spoon
Method
You’ll need to soak your beans overnight, so get them into a bowl and cover with cold water. Let them sit at room temp for at least 8 hours, then drain when ready to cook.
Deseed your chilies and puree them in a food processor with 5 garlic cloves and some water. Set aside.
Preheat stock pot with olive oil on medium high heat. Dice onion, carrot, celery, tomato and potato, and add them to the stock pot, stirring with a wooden spoon. Once your vegetables start to caramelize, add your cumin and your garlic and chili puree and mix in. Season your vegetables with a few pinches of salt and some cracks of black pepper. Add tomato paste and brown sugar to the mix and allow to cook down 3-5 minutes. Deglaze the pot with apple cider vinegar, being sure to scrape all the bits from the bottom.
Add drained beans and cover the vegetables and beans with water. Add bay leaves. Bring up to a boil then reduce to a simmer. Allow your chili to cook at a slight simmer until the liquid has reduced and thickened, and your beans are tender. This should take an hour to two hours. Stir every 15 minutes and taste for seasoning.
Once cooked, feel free to serve in a large bowl with whatever garnish you have (eg. Cilantro, chives, an apple slice).

This is a one-pot recipe that involves slow-cooking all your ingredients over a long period of time. Soaking beans overnight will help them become tender quicker, but it means a lot of patience. I like to get a pot on in the early afternoon and serve it for dinner. 
Sourcing ingredients for this dish is not difficult as it seeks to use up leftover vegetables. A 1kg bag of dried red kidney beans costs about $2.99 and lasts a long time. I find the addition of potatoes adds starch and thickens the liquid quite nicely giving the chili a desirable texture without added flour as a thickener. In the future, I would experiment with a ground nut or seed as a garnish to add a crunch to this dish, and would serve it with fresh bread or rice for a complete meal.

Soak the lichens in vinegar for 30 minutes and then put them through continuous water soaks for about 4 hours, changing the water every hour. Add the two cups of water to a saucepan and then add the Ramen soup flavoring packet. While you’re waiting for the water to come to a boil, slice the lichens into thin strips. Add the noodles to the water when it’s boiling and then add the lichen strips. When done, spoon and serve into bowls.
Lichen Pasta
Ingredients
1 quart of water
1 tablespoon of salt
12 ounces of pasta (any variety)
3 tablespoons of olive oil
½ cup of parmesan cheese
1 cup of thin sliced or julienned lichens
1 tablespoon of parsley
Directions
Prepare the lichen as indicated previously in rinses of vinegar followed by rinses of water. Add water and salt to the pot and bring to a boil. Then slice the lichens and set aside. Add the pasta to the boiling water and cook until done. Drain the pasta and toss with the olive oil, parmesan cheese, lichens and top with parsley. Serve.

We usually ignore them and don’t even notice them, but they’re one of the most primitive lifeforms on Earth. They’re also good eatin’.
They are lichens, a form of algae with a fungus membrane to support the plant. But they don’t grow in water; they grow on trees and rocks and sometimes on the ground.
Some of the lichens you see in the wild could be hundreds if not thousands of years old. That’s why you shouldn’t pick or scrape lichens arbitrarily. In a survival situation, all bets are off, but if you’re not going to eat it, respect it and leave it alone.
Most lichens are benign, a few are toxic and only a couple have been identified as poisonous. This is not as severe as the mushroom world, where there are numerous varieties that are downright deadly, but you gotta know your lichens.
In fact, only two forms of lichen out of 20,000 varieties are defined as poisonous. One is called Vulpacida pinastri and the other is called Letharia vulpina. Their common names are the powdered sunshine lichen and the wolf lichen.

Both are colored yellow and as a general rule you should avoid lichens that are yellow or orange. The wolf lichen is greenish yellow and the powdered sunshine lichen is sulfur yellow. It’s the blue and green varieties that are typically safe to eat.
Lichens 101
Before you dismiss lichens as some caveman survival food, you should know that Chef René Redzepi of the Noma restaurant in Copenhagen has touted lichens as a critical part of his cuisine. He has been identified as the top chef in the world by numerous publications and culinary organizations, and he uses lichens regularly in many of his dishes.
But you might not agree if you simply start chewing one you’ve just picked off a tree.

According to the U.S Forest Service, here’s the dictionary definition of a lichen:
Lichens are dual organisms consisting of a fungus and an alga or a cyanobacterium. The fungus provides the alga with structure, protection, nutrients, and water absorbed from the atmosphere and the substrate (e.g., soil, rotten logs, tree branches). In return, the alga provides carbohydrates from photosynthesis to the fungus. Algae from some lichens grow independently of the fungus, but in lichen form, the algae can inhabit more challenging environments than when growing alone.
There are three types of lichens based on these photos from the U.S. Forest Service:
Foliose (leaf-like)
Fruticose (shrub-like)
Crustose (growing closely attached to a surface)
Wherever you live in the world you’ll probably encounter one of these types, if not all three. Northern latitudes tend to see more prolific lichen growth. That’s good news in a winter survival situation.
How Do Lichens Taste?
A raw lichen right off the tree or a rock is going to have the consistency of a rubber inner tube and taste highly acidic if not downright astringent. You have to soak them in water for hours, with frequent water changes. This will get rid of the natural acids that permeate the lichen.
A Japanese technique is to gently boil them with frequent water changes. This will result in a lichen that is quite gelatinous. In case you’re wondering, “gelatinous” means slimy, similar to the slime you see when you boil okra or cactus. It’s OK to eat it, but be prepared.
In a pure survival situation, you would soak the lichens in water with frequent water changes and eat them like potato chips. They’re going to be tough blue or green potato chips, but they’ll help to keep you alive.
In a more civilized environment, you can slice them and toss them in a pasta with olive oil, or add them to a soup or broth to thicken the soup. Even in a simple cup of chicken broth, lichens will add viscosity and body, making it sip more like a gravy than a watery broth.
In Scandinavia, lichens are often added to flour for bread-making after they have been soaked in multiple water changes and the acid has been leached out.
A modern technique is to add bicarbonate of soda in a proportion of one teaspoon to a quart of water. This will also help neutralize the acids.
In Africa, lichens were used for jelly-making with locally harvested fruits. It has the same qualities as gelatin and was also used by American pioneers prior to commercially made gelatin becoming available.
Regardless of the technique you chose to use, I would strongly recommend soaking the lichens in a bowl of vinegar for at least 30 minutes before you soak them in the water changes. Vinegar is a powerful antiseptic and will kill any germs on the lichen’s surface. That’s important because these organisms have potentially been exposed to elements for thousands of years. That gives them plenty of time to pick up some nasty microbes.
In a survival situation, you may only have water or at least boiling water to sanitize any lichen. In this instance, I would prefer lichens growing on a tree and preferably under a large, over-hanging branch. No guarantees but it may have had less exposure to the elements in this kind of environment as opposed to lichens growing on rocks.
Nutritional Value
The nutritional value varies, depending on the species and the amount. Generally, lichens have some of the nutritional benefits of a well-known form of algae called “spirulina.” It has vitamins like vitamin K and vitamin C, some carbohydrates and a fairly good calorie count based on the size.
Harvesting Lichens
Older, more mature trees tend to provide the most lichens. This is because it takes them so long to grow. Rocks and cliff faces also will provide lichens. On a canoe trip in Canada I remember seeing a large slab of granite on the shoreline covered in lichens like a patchwork quilt. Just make sure you stay away from the yellow and orange ones.
The best tool for lichen collecting is a knife. You have to cut it away from the rocks or trees. They come off simply, but most tree lichens will have some tree bark attached. The external tree bark of any tree is indigestible, so try to shave it away. I’ve sometimes used my thumbnail to do this.
However, winter presents some unique problems. The lichens are typically frozen. You may want to grab more bark from a tree and deal with it after you’ve soaked it. The same is true for rock lichens.
To preserve lichens for future use, sanitize them in vinegar for 30 minutes, do numerous soaks in water changes for a few hours, and then dry them in a food dehydrator. When it’s time to eat, rehydrate them in cold or gently boiling water.
Lichen Recipes
There are two lichen recipes that I make from time to time:
Lichen Ramen Soup
Ingredients
1 package of Ramen noodles plus broth seasoning
2 cups of water
1 cup of lichens soaked in water changes and cut into julienne strips
1 teaspoon of soy sauce
Directions
Soak the lichens in vinegar for 30 minutes and then put them through continuous water soaks for about 4 hours, changing the water every hour.
