Batman v Superman - Movies That Divided Us

Not all movies bring us closer. Some movies have managed to drive a stake deep into our cinematic fantasies leaving fissures behind. So did the highly anticipated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, successfully forcing us to cheerlead our own "Rocky". Pitted against each other, two of DC Comics' best heroes face off in a battle of technology against superhero powers.  Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is a Warner Brothers production released in 2016, in the DC Comic Extended Universe.  The movie presents the birth of the Justice League, featuring the appearance of Wonder Woman. As usual, this battle is carefully choreographed by Superman’s arch-enemy, Lex Luthor, who continues his quest to destroy Superman.

Production and Direction Batman v Superman

As early as 2013, the creation and production of this movie were in discussion. Director Zach Synider worked with writers David S. Goyer and Chris Terrio to create a more aggressive Batman. Played by Ben Afflick, Batman fought Superman who is prepared to do everything to stop Zod, interpreted by Henry Cavil. Pre-production shooting got underway in Los Angeles in 2013. However, the main work started in 2014 in Detroit, with shooting extending to Illinois and New Mexico. The movie premiered in Mexico City, Mexico on March 19, 2016, before a worldwide release on March 25, 2016.  The movie made historic performances at first but, when critics began to land negative reviews, the movie's performance retracted. However, the box office was a success for Warner Brothers, grossing US$873 million.

Batman v Superman - Unfavorable Reviews

The main actors performed superbly well, with both characters showing a vivid display and an excellent action sequence. The story, however, was not to the liking of the fans, we have seen a division of fans extended to the critics, who evaluated the movie with a fanfare base, rather than theatrical standards. Nobody wants to see Superman defeated, not even by Batman.  And that has been the center of the negative criticism, even today at the time of this article, fans still ask ‘Why did Batman defeat Superman?’ ‘’ Watching it makes it clear that the people involved had no idea what they were doing, and should never have been put in charge of a project this size to begin with. The story makes no sense, and the whole reason Batman wants to kill Superman is contrived. Batman and Superman hate each other because they both cause collateral damage and human death, and neither one ever sees fit to point out their similarities, or try and talk to each other about their different perspectives. That would have been too interesting, so of course, Snyder didn't include it’’. Steven Beshel, Rotten Tomatoes “I'd like to start by saying that I’m a big Superman fan, and have been ever since the Christopher Reeve Superman films. So, watching Henry Cavill don the red cape made sense, he looks the part but Man of Steel fell a bit short for me, it wasn't bad but it wasn't great, just ok. It was a bit like having your bowl of porridge thrown against a submarine - It was necessary but left me confused, alone, and damp.’’ The movie should have had better success at the box office but having your lifelong hero beaten upon by a simple human, may not swell within your taste. Beshel Francis- MFA in Theatre Practice, specializing in Community-Based Theatre

Beshel Francis (he/him) is a second-year student completing an MFA in Theatre Practice. He specializes in community-based theatre in the Department of Drama at the University of Alberta.

Why did you decide to take your first CSL course?

I started my studies in January 2023. During my course GSJ 570, I discovered it included a CSL placement. Initially unfamiliar with the concept, our professor clarified that students would be assigned to eight different foundations. After reviewing the options, I found Ribbon Rouge particularly appealing due to its journey mapping project involving Black and LGBTQIA+ communities, which aligned with my research interests. Securing this placement was crucial for community engagement and networking. Upon receiving confirmation from my professor, I was thrilled to be chosen for Ribbon Rouge, marking my introduction to Community Service-Learning and its enlightening impact on me.

Are you completing the CSL Certificate? Why?

At the moment, I am not engaged in community service-learning placements, but I am truly eager to delve back into it. I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact it can have. Stepping into unfamiliar territory can be daunting, yet the moment you immerse yourself, it feels like finding your true calling. There's a unique resonance, especially for those passionate about community service. It's an invitation to connect on a deeper level.

Reflecting on my experience with Ribbon Rouge, I felt there was still so much more to explore with the incredible people involved. Even after my initial placement was slated to end, I reached out to continue my involvement. I was thrilled when they welcomed me to volunteer further. This eagerness stems from my background of working with numerous NGOs back home. As my initial contract was extended, I embraced the opportunity to contribute until December. The organization recognized my dedication and creativity, eventually offering me the role of Artistic Director for an upcoming festival. Each experience has been immensely rewarding, and I am genuinely excited to continue making a meaningful impact through community engagement.

What was your favorite part about your CSL placement, and why?

Ribbon Rouge Foundation embodies a profound commitment to fostering health equity and advancing social justice within the African, Caribbean, and Black communities (ACBs). Through a combination of community-engaged arts, storytelling, and purposeful dialogues, the Foundation ignites transformative conversations, reshapes perceptions, and catalyzes positive societal shifts. The power of the arts as a medium for change resonates deeply with me. Its inherent flexibility allows for the exploration of myriad sensitive topics and the cultivation of meaningful connections.

Upon discovering Ribbon Rouge, I immediately recognized it as a space where my passions align and where I can actively contribute to meaningful change. The Foundation provides a platform for individuals to take initiative and enact tangible progress, a quality that deeply resonates with my values. I hold a particular reverence for organizations like Ribbon Rouge, as they are unequivocally committed to fostering social equity, a cause that is close to my heart.

What was the most important/memorable lesson you learned?

I believe that the essence of a job well done lies not just in its completion, but in the opportunities, it brings for further growth and contribution. When we dedicate ourselves to community service alongside like-minded individuals, there's a profound sense of harmony. Our focus shifts from individual achievements to collective goals, emphasizing accessibility, mutual learning, and the power of teamwork. Each person brings their unique strengths and perspectives to the table, and it's through collaboration that we can truly harness their potential and see the bigger picture. Despite differing viewpoints, when we converge in shared spaces, we often realize that we're striving for the same outcomes, albeit through different lenses.

Engaging in art-based research within specific communities adds another layer of depth to our work. We become intimately connected with those we serve, and their gratitude and enthusiasm fuel our passion. Witnessing individuals express newfound possibilities through our projects is immensely rewarding. It's a validation that our efforts are making a tangible difference, resonating with the very people we aim to impact. The ultimate reward, however, lies in the understanding and appreciation of our organization's message by the communities we serve. When people not only comprehend but embrace our mission, it signifies a profound connection. It's a testament to the transformative power of our initiatives and reinforces our commitment to reaching those whose lives we seek to touch.

Has your experience with CSL led you to build new social connections?

Coming to Canada on my own was quite a journey. Initially, I didn't have any established connections here besides a few scattered friends and family across the country. Networking seemed like a daunting task, but then I enrolled in the GSJ 570 course, which opened doors for me, leading straight into a placement with Ribbon Rouge Foundation. Through this experience, I built professional connections with colleagues and classmates and formed meaningful relationships akin to family bonds. It's remarkable how quickly I have expanded my network and engaged with individuals I never thought I would have the chance to meet. When I reflect on my journey and share it with others, they often express disbelief, wondering how I managed to accomplish so much in such a short time. The key, I believe, lies in my dedication and willingness to seize every opportunity presented to me. I have embraced the philosophy that the reward for good work is more work, and it's through consistently demonstrating my commitment that I have been able to foster connections and receive further opportunities. Sometimes, I find myself amazed at the breadth of my network and the experiences it has afforded me.

I am profoundly grateful for every opportunity and interaction, even when venturing into unfamiliar territory. It's through these experiences that I have grown, both personally and professionally. I owe a significant portion of my success and growth to the support and opportunities provided by CSL. My placement with Ribbon Rouge has enhanced my research and enabled me to contribute meaningfully to the community while expanding my social network. Looking back, I am immensely thankful for the GSJ 570 class that introduced me to Ribbon Rouge. It has been a pivotal experience that has shaped my journey in Canada and helped me establish academic and social roots.

Throughout your journey with CSL, has there been a particular individual, group, or experience that inspired you in some way?

I have witnessed the incredible power of unity within our community. When individuals come together, their first instinct often revolves around fostering equity and championing diversity. Initially, some may express doubt, saying, "I can't do it," but with encouragement, that sentiment transforms into a resounding, "we can do it!" Together, they embrace the challenge and collaborate harmoniously. Within this shared space, optimism and positivity flourish, inspiring me deeply. This sense of collective empowerment is what drew me to engage actively in our community initiatives. Despite recognizing our limitations, we refuse to let them define our aspirations. Through Ribbon Rouge, we have cultivated a vibrant Artists Collective comprising theatre, visual arts, dance, photography, and more. Personally, theatre resonates profoundly with me, given my involvement in the medium.

In recent months, our collaboration with the Edmonton Federation Community League (EFCL) has been particularly impactful. Together, we embarked on an anti-racism project where our theatre team crafted narratives based on our experiences, integrating them into interactive theatre. This unique form of theatre allows us to immerse ourselves in various community leagues, engaging audiences in thought-provoking dialogue. Our approach is interactive and inclusive. Each character presents a dilemma, inviting the audience to share their insights. This dynamic exchange culminates in the portrayal of resolutions on stage. By targeting specific communities, we aim to bridge divides and spark meaningful conversations through art.

Prior to each performance, we meticulously tailor our presentation to resonate with the audience's identity and experiences. Our objective is not only to entertain but also to educate and engage. This work feels like a calling, driven by a deep sense of purpose. Art possesses a universal language that transcends barriers. It speaks directly to the heart, transcending linguistic boundaries. Whether or not someone shares our language, they can connect with the message conveyed through artistic expression. This ability to evoke emotions and foster understanding underscores the transformative power of our work.

During the Winter of 2023, in your WGS 470/GSJ 570 class, you were placed with Ribbon Rouge and recently started working part-time with them as the Artistic Director of their Artist's Collective. Can you share how your transition from student to staff member enhanced your skills and knowledge of the non-profit sector?

I embarked on this journey as a volunteer during my placement period, which sparked my passion for community engagement. During this time, I connected with Ribbon Rouge, feeling a deep-seated desire to contribute more meaningfully. Joining their team felt like finding my niche, propelling me into a role focused on community outreach—an area I have previously delved into. Our discussions centered around vital topics such as sexual health awareness, particularly within the ACB community. As plans for a festival unfolded, I found myself immersed in the creative process. Recognizing my contributions, they entrusted me with the pivotal role of Artistic Director, marking a significant turning point in my career trajectory. This opportunity not only promised personal growth but also underscored the ethos of flexibility and advancement within CSL. It challenged me to adapt swiftly to new responsibilities and embrace the present moment, fostering a mindset of continual transformation. While my current role involves overseeing and coordinating, it's the interpersonal aspect that truly resonates with me.

Despite my inherent shyness, I have discovered a newfound confidence in connecting with others, inspiring them to envision possibilities. Each interaction reaffirms my belief in the power of communal effort and the impact of effective communication. My journey with CSL has honed my adaptability and enhanced my social presence and negotiation skills. Looking ahead, I remain open to evolving roles within the organization, guided by a steadfast commitment to making a tangible difference. My work here isn't just about fulfilling job responsibilities—it's about fostering a culture of empowerment and collective progress. And that's precisely why I am here today.

Did CSL change your ways of thinking about certain things, and how?

It's truly been a journey of growth and adaptation for me. Navigating a new space can be daunting, especially when it comes to understanding the dynamics of community service here. However, I have found that the key lies in embracing adaptability and flexibility. One valuable lesson I have learned is to seize opportunities without hesitation. Even when faced with uncertainty, I have discovered the importance of taking that leap of faith and moving forward. For instance, when the offer to become Artistic Director at Ribbon Rouge presented itself, I was initially overwhelmed with fear. However, I chose to trust in my ability to adapt and grow.

The impact of that decision has been profound. From January until now, I have witnessed firsthand the positive outcomes of my willingness to embrace new challenges. I have received calls expressing gratitude for my role in holding the team together. It's moments like these that reaffirm the value of stepping outside my comfort zone and seizing opportunities as they arise. I am immensely grateful for the journey and the growth it has brought.

How would you sum up your experience with CSL in one sentence?

My experience with CSL has been a collage of amazing memories, each captured in my heart like a precious frame, ready to be cherished in the present and future. It has been a journey filled with invaluable lessons and countless opportunities for growth, for which I am truly grateful.

Fever Dreams

This is a revision and expansion to the giveaway piece “Solas has a Fever,” written for @wrenbee, who wanted a scene that explores what might happen if Solas got sick. Of course, he is just a huge, pathetic puppy about it. Lucky for him, there’s Sene.

She found him asleep, half-naked in the late, pink light of morning. He’d been sick. Solas never got sick, but there was something really bad going around that early spring. It was a flu thing, and he’d probably picked it up off one of the children in the Beshel Clan outside the village. They all liked to crawl all over him. He was as tall as a mountain, and they liked to remind him of this. Mount Solas, they’d say. Let us rub your bald head! He could not help himself.

The Beshel Clan had a dairy farm and a great deal of land, and Sene and Solas spent a lot of time there, doing whatever. It’s where they bought all their dairy–milk, butter, cheese, and all. Whenever they went, the mothers would all stand by and laugh as their children scaled Sene’s alarmingly big and handsome husband. They would sip their tea and look at Sene with their blushing vallaslin, and they did not say much, but she knew what they were thinking, which was to ask when she was going to get pregnant with this man’s child, and she had a mind to tell them whenever the fuck I want, little ladies though what she really meant was SOON as it had been almost a year since their wedding in Crestwood, and they were ready. They were, but Sene was stubborn and she just didn’t want to give them their satisfaction. Whatever, she thought. Whatever and so there.

That day, Solas had woken up early in the morning, before the sun was even warm yet. He seemed disoriented and feverish, and he wanted to be held. He was a little pathetic—just this big sick puppy who loved her. So she brought him a glass of water, and she put a cool cloth on the back of his neck, as cold as she could get it, dipped in a bucket of water she’d brought up from the cellar. They kept a large tin down there, usually for drinking, but he was way too hot that morning. She had to bring things down.

After he went back to sleep, even though it was a little early, Sene was awake, so she went outside to prune the roses. Sene sucked at pruning the roses, and she hated wearing gloves, so she always got pricked and probably scratched, too, along her arms and somehow even her legs. She could not for the life of her figure out how, despite being so athletic with a bow, she could be so clumsy in everyday life. But the pruning needed to be done, and she knew that Solas would appreciate this small contribution in the garden. Little love languages. She was worried about him, but it was not enough to speed up her thoughts. She just knew how awful it was to be sick, even just a stupid fever, and she wished she could just pet it away.

She came back inside after the sun was up. She poured herself a bowl of cereal and a cup of coffee, and she sat at the table alone and read the post. She read all about how Cullen Rutherford, former Commander of the Inquisition Army, had just moved to a large plot of land out in the cuts. With the addition of Mr. Rutherford, the story read, Crestwood has now become home to no fewer than three former Inquisition leaders, including the Inquisitor herself. Sene was very excited for this. She was very proud. Cullen had sent word of his impending arrival several months back, and she wondered if he would be alone. She wondered if he would have anybody with him.

Cullen had always been a very dear friend to her and especially Solas during difficult times. She was glad for the opportunity to spend time with him again. Though he was dreadful at Diamond Back, always second-guessing himself. In any case, she wrote him a quick note on parchment, inviting him to dinner in a week as soon as Solas had recovered, and she put it into an envelope, and she went back outside and up the grassy walk, past the white fence that Solas had built the summer before, and she put the letter in the mailbox for the courier to pick up that very afternoon.

When she got back inside, she went to check on Solas. Sort of tangled there, flushed. He’d discarded the cold compress to the floor. She got into bed and just lie there next to him, looking at him, hoping he would open his eyes but also knowing he was sick and wishing he would just stay asleep until he was healed. He was very hot. She could feel it coming off of him, and she knew now that this would be an all-day thing and maybe even two until the fever broke completely. She sighed. She waited. He stirred eventually. He opened his eyes, and he smiled when he saw her.

“Big hair,” he said, his eye lids heavy. He put one red curl behind her ear and he let his knuckles graze at her freckled jaw. “Pretty girl. What is wrong with me, vhenan? Am I dying?”

“You’re sick,” she said.

“I am hot, but I am also cold. As a mage of considerable power, I cannot, for the life of me, understand how this is possible.”

“You have a fever, Solas,” she said.

“A fever?”

“Yes. It’s okay.”

“I haven’t had a fever since I was a kid,” he said.

“What did your mother used to do when you had a fever?”

“I don’t know,” he said, closing his eyes, shifting uncomfortably in the sheets. He seemed thirsty. “Lots of ice. Probably.”

Sene thought on this, in earnest. “Well, I can’t make ice. Obviously,” she said. She gave him a glass of water from the bedside table and watched him drink the whole thing. “But you can make some ice, and then I can go do something nice with it.”

“Like what?” he said, handing her the empty glass

“Like wrap it in a fancy towel and put it on your head.”

This made him grin. “I would enjoy nothing more. But I am too tired to make ice, vhenan. Making ice is very difficult.”

“What do you mean?” she said. “I have seen you freeze entire bandits into blocks of the stuff.”

“That is different,” he said. “It is different when you’re killing bandits, vhenan. That is ice in motion. Something like ice, it’s sort of like jumping very far. It’s much easier when you’ve got a running start. Crafting ice out of stillness is like trying to make a standing jump from one side of a ravine to the other.”

“That actually makes sense,” said Sene.

“I don’t remember what it means to have a fever,” said Solas.

“Your blood is hot,” said Sene. “That’s what it means.”

“Is that your expert medical opinion, vhenan?” He smirked. Lazy, but still.

“Hush,” she said. “Be quiet, Solas. No smirking right now. Use your considerable mage powers and go to sleep.”

“I don’t want to sleep.”

“Yes, you do.”

“Can you carry me into the living room?” he said. “You can bring me juice from the cellar, and I will watch you go about your day. I would like to watch you dusting the bookshelves. You smell like the garden.”

“I pruned the roses,” she said. “But I do not have plans to dust the bookshelves today.”

He smiled and closed his eyes. “You pruned the roses?”

“Yes.”

“Did you scrape up your shins, vhenan?”  

“Yes, I did.” She swung around her legs and showed him.

He kissed the little red lines. “Carry me,” he said.

“I can’t carry you, Solas. You are way too heavy.”

“Drag me then. Come on, Isene. Don’t go delicate on me now.”

She shoved him. He groaned.

“I’m sorry,” she said. Then she pet his eyebrows and kissed the bridge of his nose. “You’re so warm,” she said. “Maybe I should send for the healer.”

“Do not worry, Sene,” he said. “You’re always so worried.”

“I am not always so worried.”

“You said it yourself. My blood is just hot. All liquids must cool eventually.”

“Is that your expert medical opinion, vhenan?”

“Indeed, it is,” he said.

“You need to drink more water.”

“Probably, that is true,” he said. “Though I would prefer orange juice.”

“Are you sure you want me to drag you out of here?”

He nodded. “Yes, please. I am terribly bored and alone.”

“You’ve been awake for five minutes.”

“And yet, I am terribly bored and alone.”

She sighed. Solas was the kind of man who could fight huge, floating battles in the sky through cracked ribs and concussions but for whom minor bothers like head colds and paper cuts could cause substantial distress. It was terribly endearing. She helped him get to his feet. He was a sturdy man, even with a fever, and he glided along easily. She dropped him on the blue linen couch in the living room beneath the wide window, but she half-closed the curtains to keep out the sun, and she watched him crash face-first into the pillow.

He said, “You are my nurse.”

And she said, “I am not your nurse.”

“Would you like to be my nurse?” he said. And he smirked again.

“I’m going to finish up in the garden. When I get back, I will be your nurse.”

“What left is there to do?” he said. His eyes were closed. She wondered what he saw there.

“I’m going to water the daisies,” she said. “And then I am going to pull out all the weeds.”

“I would like to watch you doing those things, vhenan.”

“I know, but I am not dragging you outside, Solas,” said Sene. “You are sick.”

“I do not want to be sick.”

She palmed his hot cheeks, and she kissed his hot forehead. She let herself linger. He was a little restless, but he put the hair behind her ear and smiled again, and he was very sleepy—she could see it in his eyes. Even great men like Solas must sleep to recover from their ills. 

“Sleep,” said Sene. “I will be very nearby.”

“Will you bring me juice?” he said.

“Yes,” she said. “I will.”

He let her go, shielding his eyes from the day as he sort of sank into and off of the couch, his limbs long and spilling over. He had one foot on the floor. But it was where he wanted to be, so she let him.

Those days the living was so sweet and sheltered, that Solas’s fever was turning out to be the one and only true tragedy of their lives. For this, Sene thought, as she went to the kitchen to pour him a glass of juice, despite his hot head, she was grateful.

Methanol Extract of Unfermented Theobroma Cacao Promotes Normal Lipid Profile of Wistar Rats

"Abnormal lipid metabolism is a major pathogenic factor for various cardiovascular diseases. The present study investigated the lipid profile of methanol extract of unfermented Theobroma cacao TC in Wistar rats. 24 Male Wistar rats were divided equally into four groups. Group 1 was the control group, and was administered 0.9 normal saline. Groups 2, 3 and 4 were administered 200mg kg, 400mg kg and 800mg kg methanol extract of unfermented TC. Administration was via oral gavage and lasted for 21 days. The rats were sacrificed under chloroform anaesthesia. Blood was collected through cardiac puncture, allowed to clot, and later centrifuged to get serum. Laboratory assays were done for serum concentrations of total cholesterol Tc , triacylglycerides TAG , high density lipoprotein HDL c , and low density lipoprotein LDL c . Administration of TC extract resulted in an increase p 0.05 serum concentration of HDL c, with a consequent reduction in the serum concentrations of Tc, TAG, and LDL c when compared with the control. The observed results showed that consumption of unfermented Theobroma cacao within the experimental dose promotes normal lipid profile of Wistar rats. Thus, if these results are extrapolated to man, consumption of unfermented Theobroma cacao is encouraged.

A Gypsy binding spell

This spell, if performed properly, should prove to be very effective. It must be performed while the moon is waning (that state between a new and full moon).

Acquire two white candles, a red or pink candle and a piece of rope, string or thread of the same colour, at least six inches long. Place all the paraphernalia in a circle of salt, about eight inches in diameter.

One of the white candles will represent you while the other will represent your prospective lover. These candles should be inscribed with the names of the persons they represent, by the use of a knife or warm needle.

The other candle is symbolic of your objective aim, red for passion, or pink for love, use whichever is appropriate.

These candles should now be consecrated for the work in hand. Hold each candle in turn, while visualising your desired outcome, and repeat:

"You are now blessed and clean and free, you will fulfil and bring this wishto me".

Light the objective candle and then lift the two subject candles, one in eachhand. Light these two with flame of the objective candle and in a loudcommanding voice say:

"Kay o kám, avriável

Kiya mánge lele beshel

Kay o kám tel'ável

Kiya lelákri me beshav".

Bring the three candles together. Take the rope or string and tie them to each other saying:

"As I tie this knot, I bind together ... (state your name and the name of your lover-to-be), in greatest love. SO MOTE IT BE!"

After this snuff the candles out. The ritual is complete and you can go about your normal business. Keep the tied candles in a safe place, away from people. This will act like a talisman and make your spell much more potent 

If after performing the above spell you get tired of the relationship that you have become involved in, then simply untie the knot and perform the incantation below

Breaking the Bond

Acquire two white candles and a pink (or red) candle.  

On the white candles inscribe your name and the name of your lover, on the pink candle inscribe the word "love". Hold these candles in your hands and visualise them becoming the thing they represent, i.e. the pink candle becomes filled with the power of love, and your candle becomes filled with your life energy,etc.

Now tie these candles together with a piece of red or pink rope, string or cord. Light the candles together. Say:

"Venti cinque carte siete!

Venti cinque diavoli diventerete,

Diventerete, Anderete

Nel'corpo, nel'sanquenell'anima,

Nell sentimenti del corpo;

Del mio amante non posso vivere,

Non passa stare nebere,

Ne mangiare ne ...

Ne con uomini ne con donne non passa Favellare

Finche ala pota dicasa mia

Non viene picchiare!"

Break the rope that binds the candles together. Now take the pink candle and blow it out, make sure that you don't blow out either the candle that represents you or the candle that represents your lover. Say:

"The bond is broken and the light of love is dead!"

Now separate the other two candles and snuff them out. The spell is complete and you should go about your normal affairs.
