continuing with the baby unovans (i say baby when i'm not even a decade older than them at this point), here's skyla!
(proof of process, notes + hcs under cut)
elesa | submas
some notes:
generally tried to stick to the original colour palette, as a more modest version of her adult outfit.
skyla's clothes are meant to be durable and practical; she's fairly active, and has had her fair share of accidents. this is especially in contrast to elesa's rich person designer clothes. she also gets to add her own touches to her clothes, such as the patches.
skyla's ace is 4x weak to electric... elesa is her greatest weakness... also the other pokémon most associated with elesa, arguably more than zebstrika, is part flying.
hcs: the mistralton gym is a family business, and skyla inherited the gym from her grandfather (as in the anime, though said grandpa is also mentioned in the games as a legendary pilot). the entire family was also pilots in fact.
she knew she would become a pilot when she grew up. not just because it's the family business or in her name, but she genuinely loves planes and the feeling of being high up in the sky. at times when she couldn't practice flying an actual plane, she would visit the city's arcade to play the flight simulator game there.
her ducklett's name is bessica for bessica raiche, america's official first female aviator.
she's pretty good with machines. as a kid she tried to build her own plane once and did lots of research to learn how. never came to fruition, but she still learnt a lot, and is capable of fixing stuff like pokédexes and car engines if needed.
she and ingo are rivals. not in the battling sense, but rather in the "we've been arguing about X since the very day we met and it will only maybe end when one of us is dead" sense. X, of course, being the planes vs trains debate. they first met while they were both on their respective journeys, around 13-14ish (the age she is depicted here). 15 years later they're still arguing. the fact that they're both working with their respective vehicles at their jobs as adults definitely 'helps'. it's not really active arguing, and even as kids they were good friends and generally chill most of the time. just that every once in a while (such as whenever elesa invites both of them + emmet to lunch, and the conversation turns towards work, or any other vaguely related topic) they restart the argument.
like maybe skyla is talking about how she had to cancel a flight to lentimas bc of strong winds, and ingo's response is "ah, wouldn't be able to relate. our subway barely felt the weather that day, so everything progressed as normal. i do wonder how it feels to be constantly beset and delayed by a meagre bit of weather most people wouldn't even feel." then skyla's like "well people definitely felt it, not that you'd know from being stuck underground dealing with your trains breaking down all the time. can't relate to that either lol." they go at it for hours. it takes up the entire conversation over lunch. elesa for once is the one perpetually exasperated with her girlfriend and other close friend's little bit of silly. emmet simply grabs popcorn and watches shit go down.

Donald Lipski’s new permanent artwork “Bessie and Roxey” (2023) at the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Mineola station celebrates two separate but interconnected figures of Long Island history – aviator Bessica (Bessie) Raiche and Roxey the LIRR dog.
Bessica Raiche, credited by the Aeronautical Society of America as the “First Woman Aviator of America,” in 1910 took flight alone for the first time in a biplane constructed with her husband at their Mineola home. After starting a company with her husband building planes and giving flying lessons in the neighborhood, Raiche resumed her previous career as a physician and went on to become one of the first women specialists in obstetrics and gynecology.
Roxey, a stray dog who found his way to LIRR Garden City Station in 1901, was adopted by the station master and became the de-facto LIRR mascot. Roxey regularly rode the trains and was given a pass to sit wherever he chose. The beloved dog even traveled with President Theodore Roosevelt in his private car to Oyster Bay and visited the President’s home at Sagamore Hill.
Lipski’s 20’ tall bronze sculpture joins realistic depictions of the two in a pose reminiscent of the Statue of Liberty. Rendered in the familiar green patina, Raiche holds up the LIRR dog in place of the torch. Standing on a stone base, the towering figure can be seen in the station plaza and from across the platform.
Lipski collaborated with modelling artist Christopher Collins to create the figures, and Art Castings Co then fabricated the work in bronze finished with patina.

To kick off Women’s History Month, let’s celebrate Bessica Raiche (1875-1932). Born near Beloit, WI, she was a businesswoman, Physician, Dentist, and America’s first female aviator! She was a decorated active flyer in 1910, and certified as the First Female Aviator in America by the Aeronautical Society of America in October, 1910. Earlier that year, she and her husband built a Wright Flyer-type airplane in their living room and back yard, and she soloed in it-seventeen years ahead of Amelia Earhart! Unfortunately when she divorced, her ex burned many of her records, so she is not very well-known. Read about her history and exploits-she truly was a pioneer!!

So like, we’ve all heard of Amelia Earhart. But I think a lot less of us have heard of Bessica Raiche, the first woman to make a solo flight. AND SHE (along with her husband) MADE HER OWN PLANE. Not only did she do this but she was also an accomplished artist and linguist AND later in life she began a new career as a doctor. She was one of the first women to specialize in gynecology.
