My Language Learning Log

I've been tracking my language learning in Notion since last year and I've finally decided to share my Notion set up! I've been putting it off for so long because I use a lot of colors and abbreviations that only I can understand, so I thought it'd be hard to explain. But I'll try to explain it the best I can.

I color-code all my target languages - Japanese is blue, Chinese is orange and French is green. I also track yoga/biking in purple. On the left, I have my goals for the week and on the right I have the amount of time I want to spend on each language for the week vs. the amount of time actually spent. I break down my time tracked for each category J - Japanese, C - Chinese, F - French, Y - Yoga, R - Reading. I use an app called Focus To-Do to track my time in pomodoros and I get my daily and weekly stats on it. I also don't track time doing Anki and Kanji Garden, since it's just a couple minutes a day or time I spend watching things. I only track proper study time like reading or grammar, etc.

Next I have my habit tracker where I track reading, writing, listening and speaking for each language.

Japanese

I've been reading キッチン by 吉本ばなな since March and I'm 36% through! I'm going slowly because I want to be really thorough since this is my first Japanese book. I basically translate every sentence myself, then compare it with the English translation to make sure I got it right and then I highlight any words and grammar points I didn't know. I also add all unfamiliar words (and I mean all!) to Anki and study them. It's not as bad as it sounds - I'm at about 17 unknown words per page right now and I can get through ~2 pages in a half hour like this. I know this sounds like a long and painstaking process and I wouldn't recommend it, but I'd rather be super thorough now, so I'll have an easier time reading my next book.

I'm also learning N2 kanji with the sou matome N2 kanji book. I just add new kanji to Kanji Garden and study them like that. I also started watching a new anime this week, Clannad, and I really like it so far! I watch it with dual subs on Animelon and sorta read the Japanese and English at the same time. I can't really explain how I do it haha. I always have trouble getting into anime and I only watch it for listening practice to be honest, so I'm glad I finally found something I like.

Chinese

I've been trying to learn traditional characters since I've completely plateaued with Chinese and wanted to learn something new and challenging. So I've been reading transcripts from the Learn Taiwanese Mandarin podcast and studying words I don't know with Anki. I've been studying like a half hour a week these last couple weeks and that's it. So I decided to drop Chinese for now because I feel like I'm spreading myself too thin and I'd rather dedicate more time to it when I have more time.

French

I started my FLE certification course to teach French as a foreign language! I'm so happy since I'm considering teaching French online. It's really interesting and also less time consuming than I expected. It says it takes like 30 minutes per section, but it's just a 5-minute video, slides to review and a short quiz. So it takes me like 15 minutes per section, so I'm not complaining. It's a general overview of basic teaching techniques like communicative and task-based and stuff like that. I'm curious to do the readings to get a better idea. Although next month will be more challenging since I'll have to submit some lesson plans.

I've been feeling really stuck with French since I didn't know how to study it anymore. My level is B2-C1. I watch a lot of French Youtubers, read posts from natives here and constantly immerse myself in it to the point where I think in French half the time. I've completely stopped writing since I'm thinking in it so much, so there's kind of no point anymore. I can't really tell what I need to work on since my listening and reading are 10/10 and my writing and speaking are probably 8/10. I feel like I'm good enough at this point and it's hard to find things to improve, aside from some pesky grammar mistakes, and ways to challenge myself. So I'm glad I started a FLE course. My personal definition of an advanced level is being able to follow a university-level course on a subject taught in the language. It's why I define my Chinese as C1, since I took a few Chinese literature classes for native speakers at uni and did really well in them. Although that's probably not my Chinese level anymore since I graduated a few years ago.

Reflective Blog #1

Hello, everyone. This is Kevin Liu. This is the first article on my blog. I will discuss my personal educational philosophy and answers to various questions about community education. First of all, I used to be a fifth grade instructor who taught in a cram school in Taiwan. My duty is to educate them on five different subjects and to review them after class. But after I only worked for a year, I left my job. I found that my students could not feel the fun and sense of accomplishment in their studies. I found that the education system in Asia has too much pressure for further studies. Students study for exams and not for their own curiosity. They have been living in a competitive environment for a long time, and their mentality has gradually collapsed. What I want to say is that I don’t have much educational experience, but I do have a passion for education. I know that under the raging epidemic, many families cannot lead a normal life, or even go to school. But if I can contribute through the education of the community, I will not be stingy in giving. The focus is on what kind of help can I provide them and what resources do I need? I have received the education and training of Chinese teacher training in 2020, I have a complete certificate of class hours, and I am currently taking the teacher certificate.

The first educational community I will choose is FluentU (https://www.fluentu.com/), they belong to the online version of the educational community, and they provide online learning in various languages. I can use my Chinese major to provide their Chinese teaching and teaching materials design. I think the most useful way to learn a language is immersion teaching, so that learners can't touch any mother tongue in the learning environment and prohibit the use of mother tongue. This is the teaching method that I think has the best learning effect and can most prevent the shortcomings of learning transfer. I am a native speaker who has lived in a Chinese-speaking country since I was a child. I can provide the most standard accent and the most orthodox Chinese teaching. If it is digital teaching, then I hope FluentU can provide me with a fast server and a lot of cloud space. I will not encounter problems when uploading my instructional videos or larger files. The great thing about FluentU is its real-time video translation, allowing learners to learn directly from the content of the video, and I can clearly express the voice by uploading a commentary video and choose to introduce the content that students will be interested in!

Rochester's Community Education (https://rochester.ce.eleyo.com/) is a large educational community covering all ages, from preschool to adult lifelong learning, and it also combines many schools. The reason I chose them is because I found that they offer English as a Second Language courses, but they don’t have Chinese related courses. The use of Chinese in European and American countries has gradually increased in recent years. I think Chinese education courses also need to be taken seriously. of. I can provide textbooks and basic courses of Chinese in this institution, and even introduce Chinese education talents from Taiwan. I only need them to provide classrooms and whiteboards where I can take classes and I can start classes. I can increase my teaching experience there, get to know them from different students, and learn to become a better teacher.

Learning Forward (https://learningforward.org/) is a very interesting organization. I'm not sure if it is a kind of education community, but I would love to join them. They provide how to plan, implement, and measure high-quality professional learning. In addition to rich resources, they can also establish contacts with outstanding professional learning experts. I can provide them with knowledge and opinions on language teaching. Although I am not the most professional, I can definitely help them find solutions from different problems.

The Netherland’s Student Visa Process The Holland student visa process for a Non –EU student is as below. Provincial Residence Permit- MVV, officially known as Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf (MVV). This is also known as the permit to enter the Netherlands. The MVV is applied for on the student’s behalf by the university. MVV allows entry into the country for six months. Most of the courses at universities last for 1 to 4 years, a mere MVV will not suffice. Hence the other option is to apply for VVR. VVR or a Residence Permit -once you enter the country, you need to apply for VVR or a Residence Permit. The VVR is also applied for by the host university. VVR is valid for the duration of the program and is permitted only for study purposes the student had enrolled in. There is another condition attached with the validity of VVR. It stays valid provided the student scores 50% of credit throughout the course duration. As the Netherlands is a part of the European Union, international students from the EU or EEA get special privileges and have different requirements. They require neither the MVV nor VVR for studying in the Netherlands. Such students have to simply request their host institutions to register them with the immigration authority. For students from the USA, Canada, Vatican City State, Monaco, South Korea, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, only a VVR is required. Requirements for Student Visa for the Netherlands For the successful grant of a student visa for the Netherlands, you must submit these compulsory documents:

How to Navigate the World of Online ESL

The purpose of this article is to share detailed information about the most popular online ESL companies, along with some of my personal experiences and anecdotes from other teachers I’ve come across in Facebooks groups and teaching blogs. Before we get started, I’ll give a small self introduction. I’m a biracial woman from the United States with a Bachelor’s Degree in English as a Second Language Education (K-12) and my TESOL certificate. I worked in various schools in my hometown and abroad for the first two years of my career. Nowadays, I work 100% remotely for a company called Liulishuo based in Beijing, China. To begin, I’ll cover some of the basics.

Peak Hours If the company is based in China, they will expect you to work peak hours:

6-9 PM Monday through Friday, Beijing Standard Time

9AM-10PM Saturday and Sunday, Beijing Standard Time

Depending on where you reside, this might mean working early mornings. Currently, I reside on the west coast, and I typically teach from 5AM-8AM on weekdays. Make sure to calculate the time difference before applying. These hours aren’t for everyone, especially if you’re not a morning person. Companies based outside of China will offer afternoon and evening classes, but since they’re smaller you may not get that many bookings. The pay is usually lower as well.

Students Children: Most companies you’ll come across only offer classes with children, who are usually between the ages of 5-14. You may have the option of only teaching older children in middle and high school, but if you’re open to younger students you’ll have many more options. Adults: Some companies offer adult classes, if you’re not interested in teaching children. However, the pay is usually lower.

Salary Scale Base pay: This is the rate of pay you’re guaranteed. Most Chinese companies start their base pay between $15-$18. Companies located in other countries, like Russia or Spain, will have a much lower base pay (between $9-13 per hour) and usually won’t offer any bonus pay. Bonus pay: This is what you’ll see in most advertisements - “Up to $22.00 per hour!” - and depends on a number of factors. Some companies will give you a booking bonus or an attendance bonus. For example, if you teach 100 or so more classes a month, they’ll pay you an additional $2.00 per hour. They may also pay a $2.00 bonus if you open slots during peak hours. So if your base pay is $18, adding the extra $4 will bring your total pay to $22.00/hour. Buyout pay: Very few companies offer this pay structure, but if you’re lucky you might be able to score a contract. Basically, the company will pay you just for keeping your slots open, even if they aren’t booked. Sometimes it’s just a portion, sometimes it’s the whole salary. However, this usually means base pay is fairly low and they may not offer additional bonus pay. In the past, Gogo Kid and DaDaABC used to offer this as a perk, but to my knowledge they changed their contracts last year. Current teachers have confirmed this in 2020.

Payment Methods Bank transfer: This is the method I recommend the most, if the company provides it as an option. There are less fees with bank transfer and they are deposited directly into your account on payday. Paypal: The most popular method of payment. Usually involves both a conversion fee and an instant transfer fee, which add up after a while.

Class Types: Private classes (1 to 1): Teachers instruct one student. These are usually 25 minutes long. Some companies, such as SayABC, have 40 or 50 minute long classes. Small group classes (between 3-4 students): Teachers instruct a small group of students. Again, these classes are usually 25 minutes long. Larger group classes (6 or more students): Some companies offer larger group classes. In this case, they’ll expect you to stand up and will project your webcam in a classroom. These classes usually require a teacher’s assistant who is actually present in the room to help with classroom management.

Important things to note: 1. A lot of companies will provide the lessons for you, but they’ll expect you to have your own class materials. Things like whiteboards, markers, letter cut outs, puppets, dolls, toys, models, and more. Keep in mind, teachers can only write off $100 from their taxes if they pay for materials out of pocket, so be careful of your budget. 2. A revolving door is oftentimes a red flag. If you notice that a specific company is always hiring or posting ads, that’s not a good sign. It either means they have too many teachers and not enough students so booking slots stay empty, or that their teachers are constantly quitting. Which leads me to my next point... 3. Many online teachers have turned to recruiting. As recruiters, their companies will pay them a bonus based on how many people were hired after using their affiliate link to apply, and if those applicants teach enough classes. They are responsible for helping their recruits through the interview process, giving them advice for how to pass the assessments, and getting them familiar with the software. However, be wary of this because some people who have signed up via recruiter link have reported their mentors disappearing soon afterwards. This is not meant to be accusatory, but it is a common occurrence as observed on many Facebook Online ESL Teaching groups. 4. Remember, if the offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Get all the details, in words you can understand, before signing the contract and making the commitment. 5. Most companies only hire what they consider to be “Native English Speakers”. These are people who hold a passport from the following countries: The United States, The UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand [and sometimes South Africa]. This means that even if you speak English perfectly and have the right credentials, if your passport is from a country not listed above then you are considered a Non-Native English Speaker. There are some companies that hire NNES, but they will offer a significantly lower base pay. (Note: many of the bigger companies only hire people from the United States or Canada. A list of companies that hire Non-Native English Speakers can be found at the end of this article.) 6. Most companies only hire those with Bachelor Degrees. It’s preferred that your degree relates to Education or Child Development, but most of the time they’ll accept anything. You may also need a TEFL or TESOL certificate as well, along with some teaching experience. You can sign up for a short course on Groupon. A few of them cost less than $10. (There are some companies that hire without a degree, which are listed at the end of this article.) 7. You are considered an Independent Contractor, NOT an employee. You do not have the same protections you might be used to at a brick and mortar job. This means that these companies can fire you for any reason, or without a reason, at any time. On the other hand, this also means you can also quit for any reason at any time. However, keep in mind that many companies have been known to withhold the final paycheck if this occurs, and there’s not much you can do about it since they’re based in another country and don’t adhere to your country’s laws. It’s best not to burn bridges. 8. A lot of the bigger and popular online ESL companies are geared towards young students between the ages of 5-14 years old. They’ll want to see high energy, the use of props, and general silliness, hence why online educators have coined the term “edutainer”. You must ask yourself if your personality fits this kind of job, because they will expect you to perform in this way during your interview and also in your classes.

Companies I’ve worked for and liked: Liulishuo - communicative staff, offer professional development, offer buyout schedule, hiring freezes, good quality lesson plans, quick and reliable payment each month, responsive IT team Golden Voice English - high quality lesson plans, good students, communicative staff, quick and reliable payment each month, responsive IT team

Companies I’ve worked for and didn’t like: Micro Language - late pay, wouldn’t put black people/POC in their new program despite being top tutors, poor quality lessons with grammar and spelling errors, non-communicative staff, made multiple changes to teaching contracts without input from teachers DaDaABC - offered low base pay, unfair time off policy, removed many of the perks from their new contracts Cambly - difficult students, women often experience sexual harassment from male students, POC teachers have reported racial microaggressions from students, no structured format, pay is low, lots of student no shows or last minute cancellations with no penalty for students
