Hello everyone today I am nitpicking a book.

Recently I joined a local book club [very excited to be going to an in-person one!] and their monthly reading was Red Rising by Pierce Brown, a book published back in 2014. This is a book that's been recommended to me a thousand times now by the various reading apps I've collected, but I have shied away from committing to it because it's marketed as a Hunger Games style Dystopia, except in space. And, as someone who wasn't a big fan of The Hunger Games when I read them, I didn't feel like opening the can of worms.

Now, Red Rising surprised me by how much I ended up liking it -- though I did spend 90% of the book screaming I'm sorry these kids are all 16?! They do not act like 16 year olds, but by the end of the book the world building for their actions made sense, so I've since disregarded that [though every time someone does murder like a hardened soldier I do still clutch my pearls a little. Like yeah I'm sure child serial killers exist but not everyone here is a serial killer, goodness.]

Anyway! That's not what I'm critiquing. I'm critiquing the use of "girl" and "woman-ish" as an insult in this dystopian world.

Context for my critique, and spoilers for the plot of Red Rising:

Darrow is a Red, in a world where your birth color influences your caste in a heavily stratified society. The Society keeps Reds enslaved under the surface of Mars, toiling away for H3, the valuable resource needed to terraform worlds [and also, it is later revealed, to power space ships for war]. They are a very Appalachian / Irish style mining community, with a patriarchal culture. Women do not work in the mines because men are stronger and needed for the brutal work. In the first book it's implied it's very rare for a woman to want to work in mining, in the second book it's revealed to be flat-out illegal. The women in the deep Red mines are often victims of assault and violence because the families are so poor, they have to sell their bodies and services for food and medicine. It's a great shame to their husbands, and many a blood feud has been started over this.

Darrow's wife, Io, by contrast to this patriarchal society, is strong willed and powerful. Darrow describes her as having a "spark for life", the desire to have more than what they're given. Unfortunately, this leads to her death, jump-starting Darrow's rage and revenge arc against those who killed her -- the Golds.

The Golds are the ruling class. Genetically modified to be the perfect incarnations of humanity, when you first meet a Gold, they are described by Darrow as looking like gods on earth. They fly with hover boots, regard the castes below them as animals akin to dogs and horses, and generally sip from the cup of prosperity. Through plot convention, Darrow is given the chance to become a Gold to try and take down The Society from inside, and so spends the rest of the story in a Lord of the Flies style school for war-like Golds, trying to prove he's the best of them, so he can get command of a fleet and come back to raze Mars.

The Gold Society is not patriarchal. They value strength, and might makes right. Their leader, Peerless Scarred Octavia, is a woman, and she is greatly feared and admired. The school Darrow is taken to is filled with just as many ruthless women as men. Both are expected to hunt and kill and survive in equal measure. One of the leaders of one of the other war bands is a woman who goes by Mustang, and she out-wits and out-fights Darrow several times before the plot eventually allows them to be friends/lovers. One of Darrow's biggest rivals in his own war band is Antonia, a cut-throat woman who betrays him twice, and eventually kills someone trying to blackmail him into giving himself up -- something heavily frowned upon in the weird little Lord of the Flies war school. And equal number of the Peerless Scarred proctors for this school are women as they are men. Women are featured almost calculatedly 50/50 in battle scenes as proficient fighters -- namely when theyre coming from other warbands, not Darrow's, but that seems like authoral preference for writing male characters so I'll let that slide. The point here is: The Golds don't care about gender. Women are allowed to be and are encouraged to be just as ruthless as men, and the most terrifying leader of them all is a woman.

The most popular insult in this book is "woman-ish". It happens a lot. And Darrow is far from the only character that does it, and that's the problem I have with this book.

It makes sense for Darrow to insult other men by calling them girls, or girlish. He was raised in a patriarchal society, where women have expected and enforced roles. They get married, they have children, they try not to shame their husbands. They are strong in the way a homemaker is strong, sacrificing virtuously for their male children and husbands so someone can work the mines and bring them food. Io, Darrow's wife, is an outlier to this caste of stereotypical home makers, but she still performs her wifely duties of loving her husband wholeheartedly well. It is only her desire for more that dooms her, and the fact that, when the story begins, her resolve and conviction makes her a stronger character than Darrow. It's something he openly admits many times. But it's reiterated again and again that she is an outlier. Normal women aren't like this.

However, the Golds live in a world where women are equal to men. The greatest goal is strength and might, the largest sin weakness. To be weak is to be damned. You're not worth following as a leader, if you're weak. Worse than that, you deserve misfortunes if you're perceived as weak. Darrow's "weakness" as a character is hammered out of him by cruel people with zero concern for the wreckage they leave in their paths. A common insult is to be called a "Pixie", that is, a gold who is resting on their family lineage to move up in the world instead of actually getting their hands dirty. Insults about weakness, and softness, are the ones that matter.

But the author chooses to freight those insults with references to women. There are so many times when a character is called out for "being a girl." That they need to "be a man, you soft little baby." "What are you, a woman?" Characters are proved to be flawed because "He was a giant warrior of a man, who had a girlish laugh". "He was tall and thin, with womanish hair and eyelashes." "He had a soft, womanish voice." And some of this is definitely Darrow, yes. It makes sense for Darrow to attribute some female traits to softness and weakness. But there are Golds, raised from day 1 in The Society who do this too! Who talk about being scornful because a man was too girly. Who view women as inherently weak. There's an entire arc early on where a male Gold assaults a bunch of women, and the raining consensus is not "How could you rape someone you monster!" But instead "How could you rape a woman, you monster!" A statement which implies women are weaker and can't be expected to defend themselves, and this character is worse for taking advantage of the inherently weak.

It makes absolutely no sense to me! And I'm sure it's author bias, right? The book was published in 2014, and popular media even then was still waffling over how to portray female equality without taking on artifacts of the 80s and 90s. But, I don't know man. There is so much good world building in this book? How the society works. How something as small as the slang you use can identify you as a traitor. How the genetic grafts and enhancements work -- how the labor is decided and why. There is a lot of intentional word choice to do with the Romans, because the Golds are very obviously ripping off Roman war culture. And you're telling me you were intentional about all of that, and still couldn't figure out how to insult someone without calling them a girl?

Alright people. Buckle up cus it's finally time i tell you the history of Animal Crossing!!!! (After putting it off for awhile)

Originally named どうぶつの森 (Doubutsu no mori) in Japan meaning Animal Forest. It was introduced at Spaceworld 2000 in Japan and many people have claimed there was a playable demo there. I believe there is a bit if footage you can find on it but I may be wrong.

Doubutsu no mori released on April 14, 2001 on the Nintendo 64 exclusively in Japan. Only 8 months later on December 14, 2001 they released Doubutsu no mori + for the Gamecube which contained extra features left out of the 64 version such as the museum and the Able sisters (along with house upgrades I believe) and used the Gamecube's built in clock.

Finally, they localised and released the game under the title Animal Crossing: Population Growing in North America on September 16, 2002, Australia on October 17, 2003, and Europe on September 24, 2004 on the Gamecube

However, on June 27, 2003 Japan release yet another version of the game titled Doubutsu no mori e+ where they added even more new features for villagers such as: extended dialogue, the best friend system, sickness, likes/hates, catching fleas, etc. In this version of the game you could use the e card reader to obtain certain items. In this version of the game you could also buy an island from Tom Nook which you could access through Kapp'n. Once you got to this island you could name it, create a flag, and download it onto your Gameboy Advance to continue interacting with your islander or even trade islands with other players.

Animal Crossing Wild World released for the Nintendo DS in Japan on November 23, 2005, North America and Australia on December 5, 2005, and in Europe sometime in March of 2006.

On June 1, 2006 a Chinese version of Doubutsu no mori called 动物森林 (Dòngwù Sēnlín) was released for the iQue Player, a Chinese Nintendo console. Dòngwù Sēnlín is the original N64 version of the game despite featuring characters from Doubutsu no mori + on the cover.

Animal Crossing City Folk was releases in North America November 16, 2008 for the Wii followed by its release in Japan on November 20, 2008, Australia on December 4, 2008, and Europe on December 5, 2008. City Folk was compatible with the Wii Speak microphone, which allowed you to talk to other players who had it- essentially a form of voice chat. Fun fact: there's an add for the game where it is featured being used!!! One feature i absolutely love in this game is the fountain , where you can throw an axe into it and a special character named Serena will appear and she is how you obtain both the silver and golden axe.

Now onto Animal Crossing New Leaf was released for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan and South Korea on February 7, 2013. After that, it released internationally across June of 2003: June 9 in North America, June 14 in Europe, and June 15 in Australia.

Animal Crossing Happy Home designer was released for the 3DS in Japan on July 30, 2015, North America on September 25, Europe on October 2, and Australia on October 3. This game was very different from the others and the main goal was to design houses for villagers.

In November of 2015 we were cursed with Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival for the Wii U. The game only sold 490,000 copies and was considering a failure.

Animal Crossing Pocket Camp was released on Android and iOS mobile devices on October 25, 2017 and 40 other territories on November 22, 2017- but other sources say it was the 21. Sadly, in the last year we received news that it will be shutting down, but apparently from what i know they will be making another version of it or something of the sort.

Animal Crossing New Horizons was released on March 20, 2020 internationally for the Nintendo Switch. This game introduced DIY crafting and in later updates, cooking. Eventually they added the Happy Home Paradise DLC on November 5, 2021 which essentially functions like Happy Home Designer, but unlocks new skill you can use on your island.

I must say, we've come a longggggg way with this game. It helped a lot of people through 2020- including me. Can't wait to see what's in store for us next. You might have talked about this before, but what tool (device, programs, etc.) do you use for your art? I'm thinking about getting an iPad, but like...I've never really done digital, also never owned an apple product...I feel like an alien :D

i think i've answered something vaguely similar before, but fuck it new year new answer (entire thing below the cut because its long):

For most of my work now (since around Jun '24 onwards) I use the XP-Pen Artist Pro 16 with Clip Studio Paint Pro (perpetual license), total should set you back around USD560~ish. Key note is that this needs to be plugged into your laptop/pc, so if you have a shit computer this may not be the best option for you

Pros:

CSP is very full-featured, so pretty much anything you need it to do, it can do

Huge fuckin screen (16 inches) so you can have all your layer/brush menus out like a madman

Way more bang for your buck in terms of screen real estate/performance if you already have a good laptop/pc

Can work as a second monitor when you're not drawing

Cons:

Unportable

If you've never used any digital drawing tool ever, CSP is.. quite a bit to take in (dont let that scare you though, you can customize what menus you want to see etc to ur perference)

Needs to be plugged in otherwise its useless

No touch inputs (either use the controller they give u, a tourbox, or keyboard shortcuts)

If you dont need such a big screen though, theres definitely cheaper display tablets available (xp-pen artist pro 13 gen2, xp-pen artist line, huion kamvas line) -- thankfully we live in an era where Wacom's competitors are good and sometimes even better than it, so you can stretch your dollar a lot

For pre-Jun '24 I used a 2020 11inch iPad Pro with Procreate on it, which should set u back the cost of the ipad + USD13 + apple pencil -- note I still use this if I'm travelling (i drew the first mini norris on this while in japan!)

Pros:

Crazy portable - I used to bring my iPad to draw at malls with my friend (i also drew nsfw and a kid almost saw it so uh,, dont be like me)

Procreate is very stripped down in terms of drawing software so its really easy to learn the basics

You have all you need in 1 device (no need for another laptop/pc)

TOUCH INPUTS are SO useful when u first start when u need to rotate the canvas

Cons:

If you already have a laptop/pc this is gonna be more expensive

Procreate gets limiting over time - i used it from mid-2020 to early-2024 before i got sick and tired and swapped over

Apple pencil ergonomics is ass

Small screen unless u wanna splurge for the 12.9inch ipad

A fun third option if you wanna try testing the digital art waters without committing is a pen tablet (wacom intuos, xp pen deco, huion inspiroy), but those don't have screens so you need to look at ur laptop/monitor while drawing, and the hand-eye coordination may have a bit of a learning curve

Theres also free drawing softwares on both iOS and PC (autodesk sketchbook/ibis paint/krita) if you wanna fuck around on those first

But back to your main point - apple product software is generally a good experience (to me), and if you're mostly drawing on it you will learn the procreate interface more anyway so its not as important. The key between iPad VS Other Options is mostly portability & software (CSP on iPad is a subscription that I refuse to pay). And overall if you're not certain that you wanna stick to digital, get something that would be easy to sell off second handed in your country, so you dont lose your entire investment if you end up hating digital art lol

google announced this at a developer conference back in november 2024 as one of two 'security focused' system apps they were gonna add to the android system

the reason they did it this way is because android is different from iOS in a way that has historically been troublesome: google makes android and a lot of key android system apps, but they don't make all android devices.

by installing apps that add new functionality via the google play store, they can add features without having to rely on the phone's manufacturer or a cell carrier pushing an update, which is useful given manufacturers and cell carriers have mixed track records with regards to updating in a timely manner (if they do at all).

the two new apps work with android phones running as far back as android version 9. given android is beta testing OS version 16 right now, this was the best method to make sure the feature made its way onto those old devices.

to my knowledge, i believe the app install should respect your play store install settings, so if you have everything set to manual updates it should show up in the queue of downloads... but also i could've sworn that's how my stuff was set, maybe i hit download all and wasn't paying attention, or maybe it did it in the background, idk. i totally understand why people think it's sketchy, especially since a lot of users don't realize android is full of system apps that only appear in the app list under settings when you enable viewing system applications, which is why this doesn't show up in the normal app drawer.

now that the rationale is out of the way, here's google's explanation of the setting the app is made to facilitate and how it does so:

Sensitive Content Warnings is an optional feature that blurs images that may contain nudity before viewing, and then prompts with a “speed bump” that contains help-finding resources and options, including to view the content. When the feature is enabled, and an image that may contain nudity is about to be sent or forwarded, it also provides a speed bump to remind users of the risks of sending nude imagery and preventing accidental shares. All of this happens on-device to protect your privacy and keep end-to-end encrypted message content private to only sender and recipient. Sensitive Content Warnings doesn’t allow Google access to the contents of your images, nor does Google know that nudity may have been detected. i have a recent google pixel phone and use the google message app for texting, so the app was automatically installed on my phone.

after seeing this post and doing more research, i went ahead and uninstalled the app as i do not intend to use the feature it facilitates.

if the app re-installs itself later, which seems likely at some point, then i plan to find the setting for the feature it facilitates and make sure it's set to 'off' the way google says it should be for adult users. then, i'll use an internet traffic monitoring app like glasswire to turn off its internet access just to be safe.)
