yes! i'll go ahead and put the care & storage information below:

--CARE-- Petticoats should be washed as infrequently as possible--one to two times a year at most. The best way to clean your petticoat is to steam it, which can also reinvigorate your petticoat's volume if it has been flattened. Otherwise, it is recommended to either dry clean or hand wash and line dry in the shade. Machine wash at your own risk. For best results with a machine, wash on a gentle cycle with cold water using a small amount of gentle detergent. Hang in shade to dry. Do not bleach. Do not tumble dry. Iron inside out on low heat. --STORAGE-- When possible, petticoats should be turned inside out and hung on a skirt hanger. For more compact storage, you can roll your petticoat by folding it at the waistband and then rolling it starting at the bottom hem and ending at the waistband, before placing it in a garment bag. If your petticoat has been flattened from storage, you can reinvigorate the volume with a steamer or by hanging it in your bathroom and taking a steamy shower.

Cosplay Build Breakdown - Stede Bonnet

When I completed this costume a few months ago, I promised I would write up a build breakdown on how it was made, and what it was made of, and provide information in case anyone wanted to build it for themselves. I can't promise that this will be exhaustive, but it will be informative, and you can always reach out to me if you have any questions!

Details under the cut!

The Coat

The coat was made of silk duchess satin and lined in silk dupioni, and because this was a uniquely tailored coat, I had to draft the entire pattern for it myself. The buttons are screen accurate and airbrushed gold, antiqued with a black acrylic wash. The trim along the front edge was hand dyed twice to achieve the dark gold color seen here, and hand stitched on to preserve the curve of the garment. I hand wove soutache braid into the trim as well. The trim toggles along the left side of the coat were crocheted by me out of a gold baker's twine.

The pockets are functional, but that's not what makes them special.

This vertical trim is extant from the 18th century - three hundred years old, sourced from a seller in the UK who specialized in antique trim. Since I couldn't know what was used on screen, I went for something that existed in the historical Stede Bonnet's time.

The shoulder devices are called cockades, and I hand made both of these! They're hand-gathered little beauties!

The Waistcoat

The waistcoat was a modified 18th century waistcoat pattern - I had to draft in the waist seam and alter the pocket placement. The fabric used was the screen accurate fabric from Rodeo Home Fabrics - it's called Metro, and the shade is "Jade". Because this pattern was meant for cis men, I had to add in a (period accurate) lacing mechanism to accommodate the hips I was born with, as w ell as any weight fluctuation. The pockets are functional, of course, and the fob medal is a 3D print by Kitty Krell, modeled after the screen accurate Oddfellows fob medal that we see him wear on screen. Not seen as well is the linen shirt underneath, which was made in the 18th century style. The lace used on the sleeves and linen cravat is not screen accurate - but it is close, and it is vintage! The cuffs are attached with velcro so that I can change them out depending on which outfit of Stede's I am wearing, so I only had to make one shirt!

Other Things

The black sailor's neckerchief was made from black raw silk, and the breeches were made from an 18th century pattern - they have a functional drop front and functional knee buttons and buckles!

The stockings are silk stockings, and come from American Duchess. The shoes also come from American Duchess, but I had to paint the heels red myself and add the silk ribbon. They are open lachet style, just as we see him wear on screen.

The Wig

I styled this wig myself - it was a lengthy blond lacefront from WigIsFashion, which I stitched additional wefts into the back, and put into a whole pincurl set. I steamed the set with a hand steamer, and plucked the recedes while ventilating some hair into the widows peak to better emulate Rhys Darby's hairline. From there, it was just a matter of styling and trimming the wig into the right shape.

And that is about that! My rings were sourced on Etsy and are turqouise, garnet, and aventurine.

[If you want to get specific, it's a porkpie hat with a small and slightly upturned brim, the crown height on the slightly longer side (the crown is basically the cylinder of the hat that covers your head) and an indented crown (also known as an "open telescope" crown. Enjoy your search!]

This picture I found isn't perfect. It's hard to find a hat that has both a long and flared crown, slightly upturned brim corners, as well as a roundish crown that is open telescope-shaped. But it's the closest I could find, so... :p

It was either that or… these:

1st one has the brim too short and too upturned + the top of the crown is too wide and not flared, but the good thing is that the top is open telescope-shaped. 2nd one has the brim too wide + the crown too narrow, but the good thing is that the crown is flared (the top is narrower than the bottom) and the top of the crown is open telescope-shaped.

It's so hard to find the perfect Melly hat. 😭💚

Also funny little trivia... it's also the kind of hat Walter White (Heisenberg) wears in "Breaking Bad". :))) Though the crown of his hat is wider and the brim's upturned corners are slightly more defined than Melly's.

Here’s also a tutorial if you have a hat that needs crown modification like Melly’s “telescope” hat top. If you like to be accurate, this tutorial would be great in case you found a hat that is very very similar to hers, but the top of the crown is not the proper shape. You need something that can produce steam and you can make the top look like her hat. Hers is the 1st one in the tutorial, the “open telescope” look. ❤️

This is my all-time favourite shape of a hat crown! If you happen to have a garment steamer, that would be the best option and also have someone hold the steamer for you so you can take care of the pinching of the sides to reshape the top of the crown. If you don't have a garment steamer, I suppose boiling water could help, too, just PLEASE be careful not to hurt yourself!

ok so i’m gonna be doing this in a more good-mid-bad format rather than best and worse bc it’s a little harder to judge these guys for their outfits bc most of their appearances are casual appearances and not stage or performance wear . so .

mid- streamys we all know this oen i’ve talked about it in depth this has rlly good potential to be a great outfit but the layering just felt really blocky to me it wasn’t the most flattering shape for him there was a lot of club lines around the neck area which was a little distracting could be improved by removing the hood i believe . and tucking in the shirt .

Hi I have two of your skirt designs and I love them! I had a question about the petticoats; how washable are they, and how often do petticoats normally need washing? I have a lot of trouble doing hand wash with my disability, so most commercial petticoats are just a waste of money and fabric, but I'd really love to not have my skirt occasionally shrinkwrap to my leggings due to winter static.

our petticoats will probably have similar care instructions to most petticoats. tulle is just Like That.

HOWEVER, all hope is not lost.

first off, you should be washing your petticoat as infrequently as possible. since it’s not an outer layer, it’s less likely to fall victim to spills, and if you’re already wearing leggings it won’t be touching your skin except at the waistband, which you can spot clean. even if you aren’t wearing a tights or leggings, the shape of the petticoat means that the underskirt still won’t make that much contact with skin, unless you’re not wearing underwear.

and second, the best way (IMO) to clean a petticoat is actually to steam it using a garment steamer. not only is this easier (for me, at least) than hand washing, it also has the added benefit of removing wrinkles and reinvigorating the petticoat’s poof.
