Growing up watching X Factor during its golden age really did break my brain I’m ngl. I was just at the doctor’s and she was asking me what I do for work (trying to rule out my eczema being caused by excessive hand washing) and it took everything in me not to say “nothing, I’m lazy at the moment”

Studying Language
Sorry I've been rather inactive, I'm slowly trying to get back into the swing of things!
This is something I’m actually qualified to talk about! I speak three languages fluently, albeit in need of a little practise, and I’m learning one more currently, with one on pause due to time constraints. Nevertheless, I feel pretty confident in my information lol. I’m also a qualified TEFL teacher and have worked abroad teaching English!
Full immersion is the best option. The best thing you can do is spend your time in a country that speaks your target language and force yourself to learn, once you have the “Hello,” “Goodbye,” “Where is the bathroom?” all mastered. In Ireland, there are places called Gaeltachtanna where you go for different lengths of time depending on the course and live in a town speaking exclusively Irish, usually staying with an Irish-speaking family, and going to classes for the language and for games and dances. Of course, that’s not an accesible option for everyone, so you could try going to places like your nearest Asian market, Eastern European market etc, and any areas in your city with a lot of immigrants that might speak your target language. If you have friends who speak that language, natively or just to a better level than you, ask to meet them for coffee and chat as much as you can in your language.
Immersion Part Two: Culture. The people who speak your target language natively do so not just becaus that’s the place in which they exist, but because that’s the place that they live- they get their groceries there, they go to school there, and their language developed because of the day-to-day, as well as unique aspects of their culture such as dances, music, and especially food. Learn about the culture of the country or countries that speak your target language. Eg, fold a paper crane or eat sushi if your language of choice is Japanese, watch an telenovela or go to a salsa class if your goal is to learn Spanish.
Watch TV shows in your Target Language. If you can’t access the locations, and even if you can, watching TV or movies is great because it’ll help you understand the cadences of natural speech that you can’t get from a textbook or formal class situation. Start with movies you might be familiar with like Disney movies (I will die on the hill of “Mother knows Best” from Tangled is better in Spanish). You can also combine your subtitles and audio, using subtitles in your own language at first, and challenge yourself to changing the subtitle.
Similar to the above points, use YouTube or Twitch to your advantage too. That’s probably a lot easier if your target language is English, but there are creators that speak in their non-English native language too. My friend watches a Mexican Minecraft YouTuber called Quackity who has a Minecraft server modded to feature a live translator between Spanish and English, which is very cool.
Read books in your Target Language. We don’t love The Chronicles of the Boy Wizard in this house, but the books are available in 85 languages. The Hobbit also has a tonne including Cornish, Thai, and Ukranian, and Twilight has about 37 translations, just to list a few well-known examples. Learn especially about books written originally in your target language.
Consume Media Originally from the Country or Countries that Speak that Language. Read the Witcher, watch Física o Química, join the dubbed vs subbed anime bloodbath. It can be so beneficial to your understanding of a language to see how those who speak it write it themselves, not just for localisation purposes. It can especially be useful for slang and dialects.
Duolingo and other apps. I’m swiftly approaching my 365 day duolingo streak,* and I fully intend to celebrate with pierogis and a green cake. But there are other options out there, and all of them are great for beginners. I can only speak about Duolingo as its the one I use, but I’m having a lot of fun with the layout of it. However, I do need real practice if I’m going to become actually fluent.
That’s it! I hope this has been helpful!
*I've surpassed it since writing this!! I'm at 400+!!

Tesol Online
TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) online courses are a convenient and flexible option for those who want to earn a TESOL certification from anywhere in the world.
There are various reputable institutions that offer online TESOL courses, including universities, language schools, and TESOL organizations. These courses typically cover the same material as traditional in-person courses and may include interactive video lectures, discussion forums, and practical teaching experience.
Tumblr media
Online TESOL courses can range in duration from a few weeks to several months and can be completed at your own pace. Some courses may also offer specialized certification for specific age groups or teaching contexts, such as teaching business English or teaching young learners.
It's important to research and choose an accredited and reputable institution that offers a TESOL course that fits your needs and goals. Additionally, gaining practical teaching experience through observation or practice teaching is recommended to supplement the online coursework.

So I wanted to dedicate a post to kinda my durges backstory I'll try to keep this from devolving into word vomit
so ik durge did grow up in baulders gate but because of angst and just because I wanted to a slight altered (at least my durges backstory) I do one day wanna try making this an actual fic but that's gonna have to wait
Tumblr media
ANYWAY
one day in the small town moonhaven a small drow baby is found by a selunite retired adventurer (I imagine a tefling male haven't fully thought of a design yet)
anyway, if you know, shadowheart most likely grew up in Moonhaven so yea thats where the angst comes in I imagine baby viclin and shadowheart were very close
until one night viclin blacks out and finds himself over some poor animal and is scared obviously. they don't know what to do until they hear arnell who comes up next to him ( in my head arnell mistakes this and thinks viclin is also a werewolf) he helps him calm down and promises to help them.
flash forward a bit, and if you know durge at some point, unalives thier foster family and scared it's gonna happen again and not wanting to hurt his best friend shadowheart runs away where he is found by bhall cultists and us taking to the church of bhall (then the rest if the normal backstory happens)
I also think shadowheart and Viclin would meet a few time nit recognizing eachother
like possibly at a gala where shadowheart is undercover and Viclin is there too with ketheric and gortash
ANYWAY sorry for all that word vomit lol

Also love how my parents think all I do is clean the house, cook, and watch/read stuff since I can't leave the house at all (thanks grandma) ; but here I am doing what I can to get experience and what not, working on my mental health as best I can, studying for several certifications and looking into finishing my TEFL cert and I'm constantly writing nowadays. 😗. I was thinking about this because they have no idea I have an internship rn. Like wtf lmao.

wow you're so cool! how do you keep up with (what i assume are all side hobbies on top of probably a regular job) all of the things you do in your logs, especially with adhd? I struggle a lot with executive dysfunction and would love any new tips! Also, moving to Japan, what prompted you to move and how?? Thanks in advance for answering, and also so cool!!!
Hahaha thanks for thinking I'm cool 😅 Well, I'm a part-time performing artist and aerial/pole dance instructor, so I'm always at the studio for teaching on Thursdays and Sundays if nothing else, and I'll typically train a bit before teaching and do some kind of stretching as part of my warm-up. Sometimes I go in on other days too because I'll need to cover classes or because I'll book on to classes. Having a commitment like a booked class definitely helps with motivation!
As for languages: a lot of the activities I do require minimal executive function (e.g. reviewing vocabulary on Anki, playing on an app, reading a fun little science article in Norwegian etc) and I often do them when I lack executive function elsewhere (e.g. when I've driven somewhere and I'm struggling to transition from being in my car to getting out of my car). So it's not really hard to do them even with executive dysfunction. I also try to squeeze in listening as a form of multitasking (listening to Japanese music or Norwegian radio while I'm driving/doing housework etc). And sometimes I hyperfocus! So I might study a language all day and not realise I've done it.
Sometimes having a strict schedule really works for me, so I might plan my day down to the minute. Other times it's too restrictive and I just kinda do what I want. At this point I've learned to embrace the bouncy brain and follow where my interests take me.
I've also learned to accept I might need to lower my expectations of myself just to get me started. A 1-hour exercise session seems daunting. 5 minutes "just moving" is a lot more manageable (and will very likely turn into a 1-hour session). I do this with housework too: rather than saying "I'm gonna unload the dishwasher now" I'll be like "I'm gonna take ONE thing out of the dishwasher and put it away". Giving myself permission to not complete tasks can help me get started (and often I do actually finish the task anyway).
I can also overcome executive dysfunction with the countdown method (when I remember to employ it lol). It's something I saw on tumblr, actually: whenever you decide you want to do something, count down from 5. By the time you've finished your countdown, you need to have moved in the direction of the thing you want to do. You don't have to start it; just move towards it. When I remember to do it, it works a good 95% of the time.
I do indeed have a job! I teach ESL on italki, which means I often have work to prepare the night before. I know that starting it too early is pointless, so I purposefully leave it until the last minute, because that's when I'll actually get it done. No "well I'll do it now so I can relax later". No feeling guilty for not doing it. I know and trust myself enough to get things once the deadline starts to loom.
As for Japan... it's a bit of a long story, but basically I've always wanted to live abroad, and I got a TEFL certificate in 2020. I looked at places I could go, Japan came up as one of the best countries in terms of pay and living standard. So, I sent out some inquiries, got an interview and then a job offer. Didn't end up taking it for a bunch of reasons, but then a few months ago they got back in touch asking me if I'd like to reopen my application and I decided to accept this time. So, off I go in January!
Anyway, that was an essay! My apologies 😅 Good luck with your executive dysfunction! It can be a real bitch to overcome, but it's possible with practice and trial & error!
