New Single Chapter Fics Under the OFMD Tag on AO3, comparing 2022 & 2023 / S1 & S2

The number of new single chapter fics under the OFMD tag on AO3 has been under observation since July. It's time to wrap this up and post the finalised graphs:

Weekly new single chapter fics (1 July - 1 December 2022 and 2023)

Daily new single chapter fics (September-November 2022 and 2023)

Daily new single chapter fics (3 weeks during and 5 weeks after S1 & S2)

Multichapter fics were not counted since it's difficult to get that data from AO3. Also, multichapter fics aren't necessarily as good at reflecting the level of "acute inspiration" as single chapter fics.

The data was collected by Tikli on 3 December 2023.

First, let's look at the weekly data during the 22 week observation period (1 July - 1 December 2022 and 2023).

The total number of new fics during the observation period was 5,000 (weekly average 227) in 2022 and 5,272 in 2023 (5.4% more than the previous year; weekly average 240).

In July and August 2022, the number of weekly new fics was clearly higher than in 2023.

In September, the difference between years wasn't as clear; first half of the month had more new fics in 2023 and the second half had more new fics in 2022.

Kinktober caused a spike in the numbers at the beginning of October both years.

In 2022, the numbers declined rapidly after the first week of October and in November, the weekly numbers were below the weekly average. After the first week of October, there were more weekly new fics in 2023 than in 2022.

In 2023, season 2 aired on 5 October and the weekly numbers grew each week during the season. The numbers declined the week after the finale aired, and in November, they were below the lowest week of October. During the last two weeks of November 2023, the weekly numbers were below the weekly average.

Highest weekly number in 2022 was 485 (30 Sep - 6 Oct). In 2023, it was 581 (21-27 Oct, the week when the final episode aired).

Lowest weekly number in 2022 was 142 (25 Nov - 1 Dec). In 2023, it was 84 (1-7 Jul).

Next, let's take a closer look at the daily numbers during September-November 2022 and 2023.

The total number of new fics during the observation period was 2,906 (daily average 32) in 2022 and 4,160 (43% more than the previous year; daily average 46) in 2023.

In September, the lines of both years are overlapping (between 13 and 47, daily average 25 in 2023 and 26 in 2022). After S2 trailer on 14 Sep there’s a noticeable spike in the numbers.

S2 aired between 5-26 October. During the same period in 2022, the number of daily fics was between 27 and 73 (daily average 45). During the airing of S2 the daily number was between 55 and 102 (daily average 72).

After the finale of S2 (27 Oct -30 Nov), the numbers decline rapidly, ranging between 17 and 100 (daily average 45). During the same period in 2022, daily number was between 12 and 45 (daily average 24).

After mid-November, the lines of both years start overlapping again (between 12 and 47, daily average 31 in 2023 and 20 in 2022).

Finally, let's compare the number of daily new single chapter fics during the three weeks when seasons were airing and during the five weeks after the season finale.

Season 1 started streaming on 3 March 2022 and Season 2 on 5 October 2023. New episodes aired weekly on Thursdays and the final episode aired three weeks after the season started.

The total number of new single chapter fics during the observation period was 3,088 in 2022 and 3,164 in 2023 (2.5% more than the previous year)

During the three weeks when the new season was airing (counting the air date of the final episode), the daily average of new fics was 7 in 2022 and 72 in 2023.

During the five weeks after the final episode, the daily average of new fics was 84 in 2022 and 45 in 2023.

The highest daily number in 2022 was 125 fics 17 days after the finale aired. In 2023, the highest daily number was 102 fics on the day the finale aired.

The lowest daily number after the finale of season 1 was 56 fics the next day after the finale. After the finale of season 2, the lowest daily number was 17 fics three weeks after the finale aired.

Five weeks after the final episode, the number of daily new fics was 68 in 2022 and 25 in 2023.

After reading @psychiccatpanda‘s amazing   Morguna and the Green Queen, I  got the itch to explore the Soldier’s POV and talked  Faustie into   collab’ing with me!  We’re working on a new part of the series, and I’ve  contributed about 900 words towards the  2500-ish we have so far.   Going to see if I can squeeze any of my BBB squares into this fic.

I’ve got 26 completed squares (counting unclaimed adoptables), and three WIPs - hoping to get close to a 'natural ' blackout before the event ends!

It came in at 1050 words.

* N3 - FREE – Using this for the next chapter of Technicalities - which is currently sitting at 1175 words -hoping to finish off the smut (and the fic) with another 500-ish words so I can post it by the end of the month.

* G1 - Swapped in my July Adoptable: Mate-induced Heat for this square - which was chapter 4 of A Sugar-Coated Pill

* G3 - Established Relationship - planning to fill this with Chapter 2 of   Half of the Flesh and Blood That Makes Me Whole   - a Bucky POV remix of at least the first part of Take What Was Wrong (And Make it Right), which is current sitting at  52 words.  I’m expecting at least one more chapter, possibly two, depending on how far I want to take the remix.   If I can’t pull this off - a quickie Stucky or SamBucky drabble may have to do. 

* O2 - Canon-adjacent  - Posted The Family You Find   to Ao3 this morning. Ayo takes Bucky to his new Wakandan refuge; it came in at 489 words.

* Sept Adoptable: Dominant Omega - this is of course a perfect match for the next chapter of  Finding Something Fresh (currently sitting at 406 words) - where omega!Dom!Steve and beta!sub!Bucky continue their scene.

* G2 - Eye contact during sex - This will come into play in Chapter 6 of A Sugar-Coated Pill, where Bucky figures out what making love really means, with Tony’s help. It’s crossing over with BBB KINK: Gentle Sex and is up to 503 words.

* G4 - AU: College Students – looking to expand Beaten to the Punch with some backstory on Bucky and Tony as science camp counselors to fit with this square - will also cross over with my WFB  Volunteering Together square.

C2 - Yelena Belova–   The plan is to use this prompt in the next chapter of Peresmešnik,  (aka Three Avengers and a Baby), which is currently sitting at 1303 words (600-ish of which are mine).

C5 - Marriage of Convenience/Pretend Couple -  next chapter of   Lady Natasha’s Consort and Lord Steve’s Companion.    Got a spark of an idea the other day that might get me a bit further on this fic.

+ Revenant (2023)(23 Jun-) ~ Airing. ★★★★★

I LOVE this show! This is easily the best thing I'm watching right now. Kim Tae Ri never disappoints. I am loving the dark tones that this drama has offered for its opening week.

+ King of the Land (2023)(17 Jun-) ~ Airing. ★★★☆☆

This is the fun watch of the season. It feels more like a 2000s drama. This feels like a nostalgia trip for me. It can come off as super cliche, but the banter between the two leads is fun. Lee JunHo is always a joy to watch. I am relieved to see that Im Yoo Ah seems to be keeping up with him.

+ See You in My 19th Life (2023)(17 Jun) ~ Airing. ★★★☆☆

This may not be great drama writing, but I'm finding it very watchable. My primary gripe is that the leads are a bit mismatched. Shin Hye Sun can run circles around Ahn Bo Hyun when it comes to acting chops. She just brings so much energy to her characters. Ahn Bo Hyun is more just to stand there and look depressed and a bit damaged. I do enjoy the setup and watching what aspects of Ban Ji Eum's 19 lives have made it into the present day.

This show is shaping up to be everything I wanted in a new KudoKan project. I love our leads as dislikeable as they are. It was so funny to me how they could go from arguing one moment to hosting Shoji Family Relaxing Kitchen the next. The timing is so precise. My hope for this show is that our leads are actually successful in getting their divorce.

Taco Bell Bombshell: One Man's Fight Against Serving Sizes

If you’ve ever ordered fast food with any sort of consistency, you’ll likely have had some issue with the serving sizes. Although employees are trained on exactly how much of any given ingredient to give each customer for any given meal, human error understandably leads to inconsistencies, and sometimes one is simply dissatisfied with the often meager amount of food on one’s plate. New York resident Frank Siragusa took this dissatisfaction to a new level, claiming in New York Federal Court that Taco Bell has engaged in false advertising after a Mexican Pizza he ordered in September 2022 contained “ approximately half of the beef and bean filling that he expected” [1].

In a class action lawsuit filed on July 31st, Siragusa and his lawyers attack Taco Bell about various items on their menu, namely the “Crunchwrap Supreme”, “Grande Crunchwrap®”, Vegan Crunchwrap®, “Veggie Mexican Pizza”, and the fateful “Mexican Pizza”, that have an alleged disconnect between actual serving size and serving size advertised online and in stores. The complaint cites various photos from real customers found off Reddit and YouTube to argue that Taco Bell repeatedly misrepresents their products. If Siragusa had known the amount of food that was really present in the Mexican Pizza, perhaps he would not have purchased said item, meaning that Taco Bell made financial gain off his misfortune. Siragusa requested $5 million in damages to be split among the class, and the case remains to be given a court date.

While a rather comical story on the surface, Siragusa and similar complaints may have an effect on the way food companies are allowed to represent their product going forward. Siragusa himself has two other pending false advertising lawsuits against Wendy’s and McDonald’s for similar issues, and had yet another complaint against Burger King dismissed last year [2]. Partially just a man with a vendetta and a little too much time on his hands, but also indicative of the general discontent people have with food advertising. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is in charge of regulating advertising, and for the most part there is a rather strict hand on what can and cannot be said to promote a product. An advertisement cannot have a “false or misleading label” under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, and there are even standards as to the fill of a container [3][4]. In 2019 Kellogg settled for $20 million after a class action lawsuit claimed it advertised cereal containing added sugars as “healthy and nutritious” [5]. However the Kellog case was more the exception than the rule, as most class actions of the sort get dismissed as frivolous due to their often pedantic nature. Nonetheless, the publicity these sorts of cases get lead to a snowball of similar lawsuits, leading to more headaches for corporations and more focus on risk aversion on all levels. In a way it's an expression of democracy, and ordinary citizens exercising their right to seek justice even against these massive corporations. And on the off chance that Siragusa’s claims get traction, it could lead to the most costly Mexican Pizza ever prepared.

Satellite manufacturers are celebrating a stream of orders for commercial geostationary communications satellites.

After years of sluggish demand and fierce competition, fleet operators Intelsat and SES ordered 13 satellites this summer from Boeing, Maxar Technologies, Northrop Grumman and Thales Alenia Space. The new orders will keep factories humming for at least a couple of years as manufacturers race to supply the satellites their customers need to clear C-band spectrum for cellular 5G networks in time to qualify for $9.7 billion in incentive payments from the Federal Communications Commission.

But the C-band bonanza isn’t likely to be repeated anytime soon.

“It’s a temporary party,” said Maxime Puteaux, Euroconsult principal analyst. “The hangover starts tomorrow. We’ll see if it’s lighter or stronger.”

As of Oct. 12, communications service providers had ordered a total of 17 geostationary satellites via competitive bidding in 2020. All but four of the orders were triggered by the FCC’s decision to free up C-band spectrum by paying satellite operators to consolidate communications in 200 megahertz over the United States instead of the current 500-megahertz swath.

Even if C-band orders are a one-off, they provide welcome relief in the midst of a pandemic that has disrupted global business and altered communications markets, slashing demand for aviation and cruise industry communications while creating new pockets of demand elsewhere.

“The industry got a lucky break this year with the C-band orders,” said Chris Quilty, president of Quilty Analytics.

The market for commercial geostationary communications satellites was already in flux prior to the pandemic due to technological innovation and new satellite communications constellations.

High-throughput satellites offer far more capacity than their predecessors, meaning satellite service providers can satisfy demand with fewer spacecraft. In addition, the latest generation of software-defined satellites can adjust coverage and power to move capacity where it’s needed. Plus, a new generation of small geostationary satellites offer satellite service providers a way to boost communications traffic for a specific region or nation.

Meanwhile, moves by SpaceX, Amazon, OneWeb and others to establish broadband constellations in low Earth orbit cast a pall over the market and prompted some fleet operators to adopt a wait-and-see attitude.

Against that backdrop, it’s easy to view the FCC auction as a lifeline. The agency approved a plan in February to auction a large portion of C-band spectrum and require winning bidders to reimburse satellite operators for replacing satellites and ground infrastructure. The FCC plan includes $9.7 billion in incentive payments for satellite operators who clear 120 megahertz of C-band spectrum by Dec. 5, 2021 and the remaining 180 megahertz by Dec. 5, 2023.

Satellite operators are meeting the 2021 deadline largely by moving traffic around their current fleets. With an eye toward the 2023 deadline, however, they went on a shopping spree.

Intelsat ordered five C-band satellites from Maxar and two from Northrop Grumman. SES is buying two satellites from Northrop Grumman, two from Boeing and two from Thales Alenia Space. Earlier this year, Eutelsat Communications announced its intention to buy a C-band replacement satellite, but the Paris-based fleet operator later concluded it had enough idle capacity to serve customers without expanding its fleet.

From dismal to upbeat

So far in 2020, the only non-C-band orders were placed by Spain’s Hispasat, Australian communications company Optus, Yahsat of the United Arab Emirates and Arabsat, the communications services provider for 21 Arab League member states.

Hispasat selected Thales Alenia Space to build the Amazonas Nexus satellite to provide Ku-band coverage over North and South America, Greenland and the North Atlantic transportation routes. Airbus Defence and Space won contracts to build the Optus-11 satellite for the Australian telecommunications company, the Badr-8 for Arabsat and Thuraya-4 NGS for Emirati fleet operator Yahsat.

Without C-band orders, 2020 was shaping up to be a dismal year for U.S. satellite sales. With those orders, it’s quite the opposite.

“We’re thrilled that Intelsat chose us to help develop some of their new replacement C-band satellites as part of the FCC spectrum clearing agreement,” Paul Estey, Maxar Space Solutions executive vice president for customer relations, said at the Satellite Innovation 2020 conference in October.

Representatives of Boeing and Northrop Grumman speaking at the virtual conference were similarly upbeat.

Jordan Bletscher, Boeing Space Launch chief strategist, said, “the C-band opportunity just adds to our pipeline to help keep the space business healthy.”

In addition to filling satellite builders’ high-bays, C-band orders will help manufacturers attract and retain workers, keep satellite suppliers healthy and provide revenue the industry needs to continue developing new satellites of various sizes and capabilities, Bletscher said.

Government refuge

Prior to winning C-band orders, companies facing turbulence in commercial satellite markets found refuge in government business. That reliance on government satellite orders continues.

“C-band orders and government markets have been the two bright spots,” said NSR Research Director Claude Rousseau.

Rob Shah, director of Northrop Grumman’s communications satellites unit, noted “a lot of synergies between the government and the commercial” markets. “Across the company given the demand that we see in the broader market, we are very optimistic, very bullish on the future of space,” he added.

Although Maxar does not have a long history of supplying satellites to U.S. government customers, the company has focused considerable effort on winning contracts from NASA, the U.S. Defense Department and other government customers.

“Maxar has made a big effort to diversify into civil space, which was 40% of their revenues last year, which is pretty impressive,” Quilty said.

Video and data demand

On the commercial side, geostationary satellites continue to generate revenue. In recent years, these satellites have simultaneously become more important for internet connectivity and less important for television broadcasting. Developed markets like the United States are seeing the biggest declines in satellite television, but that service is still valuable for operators.

“Everyone is considering broadcasting as dead,” Puteaux said. “It’s not dead. Not everyone can enjoy streaming services, all over the world.”

As a result, television broadcasting remains an important and profitable business for some satellite service providers.

A Northern Sky Research (NSR) report published in July predicts demand for video transmission will decline slowly in the next decade while data demand surges. NSR expects data demand to grow at double-digit rates annually from 2019 to 2029, according to “Satcom Reality Check,” a July 1 blog from Lluc Palerm, NSR senior analyst.

“That’s really the savings grace because that demand is not going away anytime soon,” Rousseau said.

When Euroconsult analysts look to the future, they see two possible scenarios. One forecast calls for commercial demand for large geostationary communications satellites to hover around five orders per year. The other forecast calls for a slight rebound in sales, meaning satellite operators will order around 15 satellites per year.

“Even if operators have been delaying procurement of satellites, at some point they will have to replace aging satellites,” Puteaux said.

There’s also a chance that some nations like Canada and Brazil will follow the FCC’s lead in incentivizing C-band clearing.

“I think we’ll see spectrum reallocation pretty much everywhere around the globe,” Estey said. “What the impacts will be on the demand for satellites is actually quite hard to tell because operators have the ability to move spectrum around inside the fleets they already own and operate. Time will tell whether this FCC program is duplicated in different countries and whether it results in more C-band orders for the collective industry.”
