I play Baldur's Gate 1 like it's a visual novel and you should try too
Hi, fellow BG3 players who didn't played the two first games yet !
I know Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 seem a bit austere today, with difficult encounters at every corner, only portraits and tiny sprites to visualize how your character and companions look like, the more complicated AD&D 2nd edition rules, the confusing fights...
But first, if you play on easy mode, you can progress even with the worst build ever. It's like a story mode, and you have nothing to prove to 50-ish dudes who play D&D since the beginning. This game has tons of areas to explore and side-stories to discover, and life is too short to be annihilated by any group of gnolls.
There is 25 recruitable companions (29 in the enhanced edition), It's a lot and you cannot recruit everyone, they will chose to follow you or not based on your aligment. So your adventure can greatly change based on what companions are on your team.
The basics you loved in BG3 were already there in BG1 : the charismatic characters, funny and well-written dialogs, the exploration, the choices you can make, the feeling of playing a D&D game on your computer. It just looks, well, more retro.
And for the last part, if you don't have enough of this, I highly suggest you to install the BG1 NPC project mod. It adds more party banters, more dialogs, more companions quests, it makes your companions reacts at what happens, and you can send the recruited companions to an inn to change your team if needed ! Also it's translated in several languages. So now I play BG1 exploring everywhere and listening to Minsc telling Boo bedtime stories and it's wonderful. You can find the mod and all the steps to install it here

Khalid's letter to Jaheira (she's kept it over 100 years)
Tumblr media
I remember doing the quest in SoD to gather the materials for Khalid to make this for her!!!
Tumblr media
And!!! She's got fucking Belm, which was one of the best scimitars in BG2 and (if you kept her in the party) best given to Jaheira!!!

deadrocks Apologies if you already know this lore, but for the OG Bhaalspawn, there's no living Bhaal to interact with or be influenced by. The many Bhaalspawn wandering Faerun at the time of BG1 are Bhaal's insurance policy to eventually return after his murder by Cyric. So, for our BG1&2 protagonist, they're tormented by their blood, but it's diluted significantly compared to what the Dark Urge has going on.
I love lore. There's never any reason to apologise for giving me more. :) I was aware Bhaal spent some time dead (for tax reasons!) but I admit I'm unclear on exactly what that means. How problematic death is for a deity tends to vary wildly from story to story.
I guess what I'm saying though is that tormented seems to be the wrong word for what's going on here. It's not so much that Bhaal's influence is weakened as that it's headed in entirely the wrong direction. I assume the horror will start eventually, but at this point my character has two nifty healing spells and an excellent slow poison spell. That last one was very useful when the party wandered into the weird spider cave, and definitely saved some lives. It was a solid trade off for a weird dream.
It feels like Bhaal is somewhat confused about what he's trying to achieve here, dead or not.

finished the first Baldur's Gate game. it was overall so interesting to compare the themes and narrative elements around the antagonists to those of BG3. it's also the oldest crpg i've played and i loved the art style and UI once i got used to them. the writing was really appealing and i'm excited to get into BG2

Something I’m enjoying about the original baldurs gate so far is all the cryptic hermits and soothsayers I’m running into that only say “bro I think u might die, like pretty soon”
(And the exploding ogre)

alternate portraits for Baeloth. eventual goal is to put together a full bg1 portrait pack. First is based on his official portrait and the second is based on Mark Meer's cosplay of him.

Jaheira: Some things never change. You’re always blowing things up.
Neera: I do not always blow things up!
Jaheira: Right. Sometimes you set things on fire.
Jaheira, pointing to Jan: You too.
