what is your fave book? 🦇
ps I did not ignore your last reply, prommy. I just flopped this week?
i just wrote out a massive reply and tumblr banished it away for some reason so… here i go again.
i used to read basically a book a day, but recently i have been in the BIGGEST burnout and am lucky if i can get through one book a year 🙃
i don’t have a specific genre or a specific favourite book and i like to explore and dabble a little. i used to be into horror exclusively, i read all of the big name ‘must-read’ horror books until THAT scene in IT turned me away from the whole horror genre 😭 i mean… i was horrified by it alright…
after i started getting a bit bored of horror i got straight into classics, jane austen and pride and prejudice were my everything, i don’t care if it’s cliche or overrated - it’s my special baby. i could talk about classic english literature for days… all i’ll say is romeo and juliet was the gateway and it spiralled, and it spiralled hard.
the last book i read was the song of achilles and it was good, i cried A LOT. nothing else to say.
AND then if we’re talking non fiction, spells for change by Frankie Castanea (i hope i spelled their name correct) is great too. its basically about modern-day witchcraft and activism.
right now i’m honestly starting to get into romance but i don’t want to add many more books to my TBR when i’m in this burnout.
so i dont have a favourite, i’m too scared of commitment for that 😆😭
#but my favourite has to be the classic#biff chip and kipper#<- if you know what this is you’re a real one.#🦇 anon

as a kid i only had british children's books, which are normal, so i was truly gagged today to go through a berenstain bears book and see references to the bible and god and having faith. like WHAT??? i thought these guys were just some bears bro. i was only barely aware of them existing. then some random ass book had a page about praying to god for forgiveness come out of nowhere. pure jumpscared. wtf children's books they printing in america
#ignore me#my entire upbringing was secular and i barely consider myself to be attached to any religion so like.#the thought of religious children's books is crazy.#biff chip and kipper would NEVER they'd just get up to whimsy in the back garden

Love that as children in the UK we all just accepted the fact that some insane parents named their offspring Biff, Chip, and Kipper
#biff was my girl i had a crush on her#i think the lore is biff is supposedly elizabeth but idr#kipper though?? thats a human child#although i can see kipper as a posh boarding school nickname#in fact i think there's a wodehouse character named kipper maybe#i think individually id accept biff chip and kipper as names it's just the COMBO. its too much

the problem with a lot of Guides on How To Stop Being Stupid About Words is that they treat the budding writer with a kind of patronising disdain, with an example sentence being, like, "there was a rainbow in the sky," as if people seeking to improve their writing are four-year-olds who are very proud of having just finished a biff chip and kipper book and not broke aspiring novelists in their twenties. even less helpful is how the 'fixed' sentences usually make use of purple prose so saccharine and rambling that tolkien would get bored (and toothache), like, "an arch containing seven jewels, or as we in the business call them colours, considered very expensive by the common man - that is, vociferous ruby, savannah orange, varnished topaz, emerald emerald, evil sapphire, hot pink storm cloud, and violent violet - hung in the sky confusedly, and perhaps a little wickedly, seeking the ends of that carpet of eternal and dreadful night." this... is not how one improves one's writing. please stray away from these kinds of guides and try, instead, practice and reading. it is the best way to learn to write, i'm sorry to say.

QOTD: Which children's media do you think had the strongest cultural impact?
I'd say the magic key books, for British culture at least, only because they're the books most, or at least many, children learnt to read with.
Good old biff chip and kipper :)

Hello fellow Brit, I’m just wandering if you’ve ever read any of the Biff, Chip, Kipper and Floppy books back when you were in Primary?
Anon, you just hit me in the face with a massive dose of early 2000s nostalgia. These books were brilliant.
Thanks for the ask, anon!
