Raph didn’t have much on his plate, though he would consider himself busy when Donnie rushed into the weight room. He was in the middle of pushing up the weight bar, racked with five plates on each side. He was sweating and grunting and trying to push through because he knew he could do it! It had been a looong time since he hit a new rep max.

So all his hopes and concentration were dashed when Donnie bolted in with a loud “RAPH!” The weight came crashing down as his muscles jumped at the sound and he quickly moved out of the way before his plastron was caved in. “What?!” Raph exasperated, he had never heard Donnie sound so desperate before. Raph was up and giving his little brother a once over. He looked fine physically. But something was definitely on his mind, Raph watched as Donnie hesitated to say more.

His brow bones came together, just a few seconds ago it had been so important he was almost crushed by weights! “I- uh- well, okay,” Donnie took a deep breath then continued, “hypothetically what if you messed up real bad, with someone you really cared about? What would you do?” Raph’s eyes narrowed trying to figure out what to say to that very vague, hypothetical statement.

“Well, first, how about you give me a little more context of this uh- hypothetical situation?” Raph prompted. He turned to the dropped bar and started taking off the plates from the left end. He’d have to try for his max another time. Donnie groaned, he really didn’t want anyone, much less his older, super protective brother to know… but if he kept thing’s hypothetical then perhaps it would all work out.

Dee cleared his throat, “right, okay so let’s just call him Darwin! Darwin has been secretly meeting with a girl, they were super close friends, like really really close, Darwin thinks about this girl all the time..” Donnie takes a breath and Raph glances up nodding to his little brother for him to know he’s still listening. All the plates on the left side were picked up, he turned to start on those on the right side.

“But out of nowhere the girl confesses to Darwin, that she thinks they should be more than friends! And he.. ugh, he ran away! And now she’s not replying or anything—“ Raph held up his hand, signaling for Donnie to pause. “Okay I think I got it, so you want my advice to help out your buddy Darwin?” Raph knew Darwin meant Donnie but he’d play along for his little brother’s sake. “Well is such a situation fixable? Darwin’s screwed up pretty badly.” Donnie’s shoulders slumped, head hanging down to the floor.

With the weights picked up, the last thing was the bar. Raph easily picked it up now, putting it back on its holster. “Sure it’s fixable, if Darwin’s girl really did love him, and if Darwin feels the same way.” Raph watched as Donnie’s head slowly rose. He could see hope flicker in his brother’s eyes. “But it won’t be easy!” Raph said making his face stern and Donnie was nodding along.

“Alright, this is how yo- Darwin gets the girl.” Raph nearly fumbles but maintains the analogy as best he can. “He’s gotta go to her, and say exactly why he couldn’t say what he’s about to say now.” Donnie’s eyebrows scrunched up, “what’s he about to say now?”

“He’s about to confess his true feelings, that he loves her just as much she does. How he doesn’t want to lose her!” Raph ticks off these statements until he’s holding up three fingers. He continues on to the next hand, “Then y- he says ‘I want you for worse or for better and I would wait forever and ever’” (Sure he’s quoting someone else’s words but Raph figures Donnie’s too preoccupied to notice.) Donnie winces at the word ‘love’ but nods nonetheless. Raph pauses his finger count at five, “Does Darwin love her?”

Donatello is quiet and some moments pass. Raph approaches his purple brother and brings a hand to rest on Donnie’s shoulder. Donnie’s eyes snap up, he looks scared, he looks confused. “Well from what you told me, I think Darwin loves ‘em. He thinks about her all the time, is worried when she doesn’t respond..” Raph watches as realization hits Donnie with full force. “So.. Darwin has to go to her, and tell her how he really feels?”

Raph nods, he brings his hand to pat Dee’s head, “Yeah and he should try not to run this time around,” he says lightheartedly. Donnie smirks, “Alright, yeah!” He’s fired up now. Turning back to the weight room entrance. “I’ll pass the advice along, thanks Raph!” Donnie gives his older brother a nervous smile before he’s dashing out.

“Good luck!!” Raph calls out. He hopes he helped, he hopes things work out the way Donnie wants. He hopes he gets the girl.

I haven’t done a raph centered piece yet, and I struggled with an idea for a while. But I really like how it turned out. And as an oldest sibling, raph is like… he’s probably the one I most personally relate too (although Donnie and Leo are still my bois) Like I see myself in him when I was his age. God, I love all these bois and want to give them all the hugs possible. And weighted blankets. Tons of weighted blankets.

So years ago, I wrote a certain TMNT fanfiction abd it still remains one of my favorite pieces I’ve done. I…might have started something tonight:

“My sons.”

Splinter’s voice was heavy, full of unspoken concern and pain. The type of pain that lacked the proper words to convey. “We need to speak.”

Donnie pulled himself from his book. He hadn’t really been reading anyway, his mind on so much else. “Master Splinter?”

The aged martial arts master simply nodded as Raph appeared from the garage and Leo crept out of the dojo.

Mikey was noticeably absent. Splinter was aware but made no move to call for him.

“My sons…tonight, when your brother failed to regain his title, you all went after him. For that, I am very proud. But what happened?”

Raph shook his head. “Ain’t got no reason to be proud of us, Master. None at all.”

I love Raph and haven’t said that enough so to be more specific I love that Raph is a soft boy who loves bear plushies, a gross boy who eats an assortment of things that are definitely better left alone, a smart boy who is more than capable of taking down villains through planning and fortitude alike, a strong boy who is dedicated to training his muscles and fighting prowess, a teenage boy who loves his brothers but is more than happy to tease and roughhouse with them, an angry boy who sometimes lets his anger take a hold of him to cover the fear, a gentle boy who is generous with hugs and affirmations to those he loves, a capable boy who takes on more than should ever be expected of a teenager, a good boy who just wants to be a hero and slowly comes to realize the cost of that duty, a good boy who has no reservations about putting himself in the way of harm coming to his family, a good boy who’s a great brother and son and person and deserves only the best the world has to offer.

Raph Is A Great Strategist

Numerous times in the show Raph has shown to have a preference for straightforwardly punching his problems away rather than think up a more complex solution. Like how his immediate fix to getting Mayhem out of the mirror in Mystic Library was to punch everything in the bathroom but the mirror. However, when Raph understands the situation requires more in depth strategy, he’s shown to be an incredibly capable tactician.

In nearly all the plot heavy episodes like Shadow of Evil, Many Unhappy Returns, and the season finales, Raph gets moments where he’s highlighted for his strategic thinking. In Insane in the Mama Train, he’s the one who figures out which eyeball-button goes to the front car with the dark armor, because “‘it was the only button [the Foot Clan] didn’t want me to press!’” [21:05]. He’s also the one who came up with the scheme to defeat all the (known) combatants in the train, with Leo specifically attributing Raph as the deviser during their mind meld [19:46]. In Many Unhappy Returns, after spending a single night waylaying the Shredder, Raph formulated a plan using all the tricks the team learned, seamlessly transitioning the mystic collar Leo acquired into it [19:53], to defeating the Shredder. Additionally, he’s repeatedly called for a retreat during fights, like in Shadow of Evil, Shreddy or Not (Finale pt 2), and the movie, when he can tactically recognize that a battle couldn’t be won. Each time, the show/movie implied that that was the right call, for the family to lose the fight but win the war.

And it’s not just that Raph is good at strategy when he’s pushed to be more serious; the show characterizes him as passionate about creating plans, he enjoys doing it. Literally in the first episode, Mystic Mayhem, after the turtles’ initial plan failed of getting Splinter out of the living room to touch his Do-Not-Touch Cabinet, Raph immediately started devising a new plan that involved “ten chickens [and] a gallon of rubber cement” [9:35]. It was convoluted, sure, and they didn’t end up using it, but it was inventive and the opposite of reluctant. This is also shown in Bug Busters, where Raph planned out dousing Mikey in honey to attract the oozequitoes [2:52]; Snow Day, with the idea to freeze Ghost Bear like in Jupiter Jim Pluto Vacation 4; and Raph’s Ride-Along (and also Bad Hair Day), where Mind Raph created multiple schemes to get the criminals arrested. The show wouldn’t have made Raph be so creative with his plans if they were trying to characterize him as someone who didn’t like strategizing.

So does why Raph do stupid shit sometimes where he doesn’t think things through at all? Well, even though Raph is good at strategy and enjoys doing it, it’s clear his immediate impulse is still “punch the problem in the face”. In fact, all the turtle boys contain the fascinating dichotomy of being incredibly smart in some areas, and the dumbest teenagers alive in others. Just look at Donnie. It’s also how Raph is a loving protective older brother, and the guy who shoved Leo into a wall so hard he disappeared in one frame for shits and giggles (The Mutant Menace x). None of this means that Raph is bad at strategy though.

tldr: Yeah, Raph has a lot of dumb and, frankly, insane moments in the show, but he’s still an incredible tactician who’s plans consistently saved his family and sometimes the world. He's a great strategist.

The interpretation of Rise Raph as a 'perfect responsible soft boy uwu' is so BORING I'm sorry, Raph is a rowdy adrenaline junkie with anxiety and I won't take this slander any longer

Raph secretly kept an enemy soldier in their actual literal house as a sparring partner. Raph glued his brothers together and dragged them out to fight crime. Raph once asked Leo to punch him in the face to prove he 'takes damage like a boss.' Raph tried to lift a school bus, twice. Raph offered to help his favorite wrestler beat his little brother up. When Leo suggests evacuating Bullhop, Raph says no bc the best defense is a good offense babey. Raph's idea of a 'friendly chat' with April's upstairs neighbor is to put on a black ski mask and go stand menacingly at their door. It takes Raph 10 episodes to conclude that they should MAYBE start training. Raph's plan to get a potentially priceless (and potentially FRAGILE) museum artifact is to punch a car in the middle of a busy street and also cut it in half with his brother still inside.

Raph's never met a problem he wouldn't try to punch in the face and does not know the meaning of the words 'excessive force.' He roughhouses with his bros and drags them out to fight villains and thinks any plan that doesn't involve an all-out brawl is boring and lame. He'll do anything to protect his family from harm and be a hero, but also he eats wet salami off the floor and once single-handedly destroyed a library.

I just adore how, at his core, Rise Raph is such a classic Raph—impulsive and stubborn and caring and passionate. He is a very sweet, strong, honorable guy who has a very powerful sense of personal responsibility... and he is also the exact kind of jock who throws you in the pool at a party without checking if you have your phone in your pocket first.

A small scene I jotted down today between Mikey and Raph that immediately made me think of my friend @brightlotusmoon

“Stay away!”

The voice was so sharp, so toxic that Raph didn’t even recognize it at first. That kind of tone never came out of his little brother.

“Mikey, it’s me.”

“I said stay back!” Mikey scrambled up, pressing himself against the wall. “I dunno what I can do. What I might do.”

“Okay, so how about I just hang out until you figure it out.” Raph kept his voice low, even keel. Not normally something he was good at but he knew all these signs: the clenched fists, the tight voice, the way any little noise made your eye twitch.

He’d just never seen it in his brother.

“Talk to me, Mikey.”

“Talk? About what? About the fact those animals didn’t deserve any of that? That what right did the Foot have to do that? That my head is gonna explode and I need…I need to…to…I dunno!”

“Hit something? Run? Break anything? Drive their skulls into the dirt?”

Tears in his eyes, Miley nodded. “All of it.”

“That’s anger. You’re angry, Mikey.”

“This is what you call your superpower? This is what makes you so strong?”

“I guess, in a way…”

“If this is that, I don’t want it. Make it go away. Make it stop! I don’t like what it’s doing to me! I don’t like the kind of person it’s making me!”

Raph took a breath. “Only you can get rid of it, Mikey.”

“Then help me!” His tears cracked then, streaming down his face and his voice broke, all kinds of fear coming out in soft whimpers. “Please…”

AU lore stuff, uhh, in my AU, after settling down and enjoying having CJ around, April and CASS try for another baby. But since they already have CJ, they go for a new baby.

His name is Atwell (AJ for short). He likes everyone BUT CJ, and it's just CJ bending over backwards trying to get AJ to like him. Blah blah blah, big brother CJ.
