Rayla: A Mental Health/ Self Esteem Analysis
The fandom has frequently discussed Callum’s clear low self esteem-- most notably in season 1-- and what Rayla does to help him through this and see himself as worthwhile. However, there is a flip side to this which I od not feel has been discussed enough, and that is Rayla’s low self esteem, and how Callum often helps her though it. 
Rayla has incredibly low self esteem-- arguably even lower than Callum’s. The difference is that, while Callum wears his heart on his sleeve and is very transparent emotionally, Rayla is not as open in regards to her feelings. 
Throughout their entire time together, however, Callum helps Rayla see the good in herself. The most prominent example of this is in 1x5, after Rayla saves Bait in the water.

The entire boat sequence is a huge step forward for Rayllum in general, and the first time they really bond, but it here we see Rayla indirectly express her insecurities for the first time. She feels as though she’s a coward because she’s afraid of water. Callum recognizes her bravery, and points out that what she did was brave because of her fear. Based on Rayla’s reaction, she has never had this kind of praise or validation from her fellow Moonshadow Elves before. In fact, it seems she’s only ever been told she’s not good enough. 
In 1x8, we see a beautiful parallel where Rayla and Callum express their insecurities alongside each other. This is perhaps the first moment in the show where we see these two as emotional equals-- two people around the same age going through similar life struggles. 
“Trust me, if the plan hadn't gotten messed up when Bait flashed, I'm sure it would have flopped when it was my turn.”

Ezran tells Rayla that she shouldn’t be ashamed of not being able to kill a stranger, and that she is awesome at pretty much everything. He sees the good in her, and manages to cheer her up to the point where she starts making jokes. While it is Ezran to talk to Rayla this time (Which I love, because it is a CRITICAL SCENE IS FORMING THE PAIRS BOND, AN OFTEN FORGOTTEN AND STRONG RELATIONSHIP ON THE SHOW), Callum’s footprints and wisdom are all over what Ezran’s words. These two new friends of Rayla’s step up to comfort her, and make her see that she is worthwhile-- something she never got from her home society. 
Now, Season 2 is interesting for Rayla. Mental health/ internal characterization wise it is THE Callum season-- hence why the season is Sky, Callum’s arcanum. Season 2 Rayla is really finding herself in this new family, and strengthening the bonds she’s made. 
You know what is a huge season for Rayla though? Season 3.
Season. Freaking 3.
This is the season where the delve into Rayla’s internal turmoils and complexities to the same extent we do Callum in season 2. And the catalyst of all of this is 1x3, when Rayla is brought back to her past and reminded of how she is unwanted and SEEN AS NOT GOOD ENOUGH by her own people. While season 2 Rayla is entirely moving forward, Rayla finds herself in this moment thrust back into past traumas and self doubts. 
We see this first addressed by Callum in the very beginning of the episode, when he recognizes how emotional Rayla must be after all she’s been through.
“I’m just saying, it would be understandable if you had some big, BIG feelings”

The big moment, however, is when Callum confronts her in oasis, and Rayla bluntly expresses her insecurities and feelings in the most raw, open way she had yet. Rayla at first, in characters, rejects Callum's comforting attempts, and wants to be alone.

However, she quickly opens up under Callum’s persistence, and after he literally sprints after her. Rayla flat out states her hatred for herself in the harshest way possible-- they’re right to reject me-- and that she feels as though she’s worthless. Callum rejects this rather aggressively-- flat out telling her that she’s wrong and that she knows it. 
“I’m not good enough and I never will be”
“Shut up”
“What?”

Callum begins rejecting her self- loathing narrative by stating that Rayla is too good to feel this bad about herself, and that she knows it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this from friends and family when I’ve had low self- esteem spirals. sometimes my loved ones will look me right in the eye and say “you’re being absurd and you know it.” That is what Callum does here, as he quite literally lifts Rayla up from the ground.

Mere moments into praising her ENTIRELY GENUINELY (This is not fake praise to spare Rayla’s feelings-- Callum means every word) in order to help her see the good in herself, Callum has Rayla smiling and realizing that he’s right. 
“And you're ten times funnier than any human I know”

And he concludes with telling her the simple facts-- that she’s smart and fast and beautiful and so worth it.

Due to the awkward miscommunication which follows this moment, Rayla doesn’t really reflect on his words until after 1x5, when Callum confirms his feelings and settles this miscommunication. 
“It's because Rayla is a hero. Rayla saves people. She's brave. She does what's right, even if it puts her own life in danger, and even when the odds seem impossible. Even when it means her own people might misunderstand and turn against her. Rayla is selfless, strong and caring. That's what makes her a hero. That's what makes her Rayla.”

With these words, Callum seals any doubt Rayla had not about his feelings, but about herself and her worth. Now, I’m not saying that one person’s validation magically makes you love yourself. What I’m saying is that Callum let Rayla know that she was loved, wanted, and not alone.
Beyond the disconcert for her own life and tying herself to her past in 3x8, which I have talked about extensively in previous posts, this is really the crux in Rayla’s emotional journey of accepting herself and not feeling worthless. And SO SO much of the catalyst is Callum.
