1931: June 3 – First television outside broadcast of a sporting event: Baird televises the Epsom Derby horse race in England.
1937: June 21 – Wimbledon Championships (tennis) first televised by the BBC.
1938: April 1 – The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race is first televised by the BBC. April 19 – The first televised association football match, England vs. Scotland, shown by the BBC. April 30 – The FA Cup Final is televised for the first time by the BBC. June 24 – Test Match Cricket is broadcast for the first time by the BBC, with coverage of the second test of The Ashes series between England and the Australian team, live from Lord's Cricket Ground. Queda una semana para la mayor "catástrofe económica y financiera" que puede sucederle a un Estado: quedarse sin fondos. La falta de acuerdo entre Demócratas y Republicanos para elevar o suspender el actual techo de deuda pública de 31,5 billones de dólares de EEUU abre una fase de ansiedad en los mercados, con todas las miradas en la secretaria del Tesoro, Janet Yellen, encargada de gestionar la liquidez de la Administración federal y que ya ha advertido que el 1 de junio habrá problemas. Sin embargo, la máxima autoridad fiscal del país cuenta con una bola extra para aguantar otras seis semanas, hasta mitad de julio, sin que nada se resienta.

En realidad, Estados Unidos se encuentra en situación 'default' virtual desde enero cuando la deuda pública de la Administración federal superó los 31,5 billones de dólares, ya se encuentra más de 200.000 millones por encima de ese nivel y la cuenta de efectivo del Tesoro en la Fed se ha reducido a menos de 60.000 millones, según informó Reuters. Desde enero, Yellen lleva desplegando una serie de contramedidas para estirar la liquidez y ganar tiempo pero también ha llegado al límite con las refinanciaciones o asignación de fondos de reserva para gastos urgentes. Todavía le queda un último balón de oxígeno antes de la asfixia: los ingresos por impuestos corporativos de junio que puede dar hasta 30 días más a las cuentas públicas.
Markus Allenspach, director de análisis de Renta Fija del banco suizo Julius Baer, considera que todavía hay tiempo para un acuerdo 'in extremis' como en otras ocasiones. La pregunta sobre cómo se realizarán los pagos de intereses diferidos permanece abierta, pero las partes están trabajando en ello. 'Esperar lo mejor y estar preparado para lo peor' es la frase del día", añade.
En su opinión, Demócratas y Republicanos están dispuestos a aceptar un acuerdo con la concesión de que el gasto discrecional en Defensa y no Defensa se mantendrá sin cambios en términos nominales en 2024, lo que equivale a una reducción en términos reales. La negociación sobre el techo de la deuda sigue en el limbo, con reuniones a diario entre las partes implicadas, pero con la sombra de una recesión en EEUU cada vez más creciente ante la postura agresiva de la Reserva Federal (Fed) de mantener tipos altos durante todo 2023 y esquivar la tentación de recortar las tasas para que no se reactive la inflación. El gurú Marko Kolanovic, estratega de mercados de JPMorgan, está aconsejando a sus clientes que reduzcan su exposición a bolsa y bonos, al tiempo que recomienda aumentar la liquidez en efectivo y la inversión en oro como refugio en previsión de un escenario que se torne más complicado aún."
La esperanza de una pronta resolución del techo de la deuda en Estados Unidos han fortalecido en cierta medida el sentimiento del mercado. Los recientes comentarios del Presidente Biden y de los líderes del Congreso de ambos partidos alimentan las esperanzas de que se alcance un acuerdo para evitar el impago. Aunque no es nuestro escenario base, a falta de una resolución negociada, no puede descartarse una rebaja de la calificación de los bonos del Tesoro estadounidense o incluso un impago, lo que provocaría una grave crisis en los mercados", escriben Deepak Puri, Sam Matthews y Wolf Kisker, de Deutsche Bank.
Según las previsiones que maneja el banco alemán, los republicanos están por la labor de aumentar el límite de deuda en 1,5 billones de dólares o ampliarlo con un plazo temporal hasta marzo de 2024, "lo que ocurra primero", pero a cambio el Gobierno Biden debería comprometerse recortar hasta en un 7,8% (-131.000 millones de dólares) el gasto discrecional durante la próxima década. Deutsche Bank espera que se alcance un pacto pero advierte de los efectos negativos de no hacerlo."
Las consecuencias de dicho impago serían abrumadoramente negativas para EEUU y podrían desencadenar una crisis financiera más amplia, dada la demanda mundial de bonos del Tesoro. Alrededor del 75% de la deuda federal estadounidense está en manos de inversores estadounidenses o extranjeros, incluyendo a otros países. La deuda en manos de estos últimos representa aproximadamente un tercio de la deuda pública, con Japón y China a la cabeza", señala la firma alemana. ¿Qué sucedió en anteriores episodios similares? Si bien nunca hubo un impago oficial de EEUU, sí que ha estado rozando esa situación en 1996, 2011 y 2013, según Deutsche Bank, aunque siempre con final feliz. "Las resoluciones de 1996 y 2013 se produjeron durante mercados alcistas de renta variable y, tras hacer una pausa durante las negociaciones, los mercados volvieron a la senda alcista tras la resolución. Por su parte, 2011 fue una situación complicada, con una incertidumbre política significativa tras la crisis financiera mundial", rememoran. 2011 acabó siendo un "importante catalizador económico negativo", según Deutsche Bank, con un descenso de 100 puntos básicos en las rentabilidades a 10 años -por las compras de bonos los inversores buscando refugio en la deuda pese al default- y una caída del 17% en el S&P 500, del 13% en el Nasdaq y casi el 30% en el Russell 2000, que agrupa a las empresas de pequeña y mediana capitalización. Las crisis nunca son iguales, sobre todo, por el cambio de dimensión de lo ocurrido hace doce años con la situación actual. El mercado de bonos y repos del Tesoro alcanza los 5 billones de dólares, una cifra que quintuplica a las cifras de 2011.
