It's your fuckin' birthday.

That literally played as a song in my head. Anyway.

Let me start by saying thank you. For knowing me, for getting me, for loving me, all of it. You are a once-in-a-lifetime love, so comfortable and homey that I could burrow into our friendship and feel so damn whole coming out on the other side. And have, so many times.

You exist in small increments all around the home I've made for myself. You're buried within my little plant cove, you claim space right next to my desk, and most importantly perhaps, you inhabit a very deep, very well-loved piece of my soul. In some of my worst moments, I hide there and reacquaint myself with the person you know me as, the person I too often lose, and feel all the stronger for returning home to her.

The distance doesn't get easier, but I'd say we've adapted. I don't cry as much when we meet and inevitably part again, but please never mistake that for a heart that's gone cold or unfeeling. I think I used to cry so hard out of fear, silly as that is. Fear that you'd move on, fear that I was easily replaceable, fear that I'd lose the piece of my soul that meant safety and comfort.

I don't fear that, anymore. I know better.

You, my dear, beautiful Sam, are a part of me whether you like it or not. And I'm so fucking proud of you and all you do and all you will continue to do. You are a force, and I'll always be on your sidelines, cheering you on until my voice is hoarse.

I love you endlessly. Happy 28th. Here's to the best one yet.
