"What happened before I was born?" asked the little girl, her eyes so wide that they took up most of her freckled face.
Her father chuckled, pausing his cleaning to pat her head of pretty ginger curls. "Your mother and I were wed."
The little girl's fave screwed up in frustration, little fists balled at her sides. "But what happened before you got married?"
"We fell in love."
"Before that?"
"We met."
"Before?"
He chuckled again, putting down his rags and crouching beside his little girl, amusement taking the form of crinkles on his face. "Why all the questions?"
Little eyes narrowed.
Thinking. Thinking. Thinking.
"I think the gods want me to remember everything," she whispered. "Can you help me with that, papa?"
